to syria and attempt to join isil in syria. it was made quite plain based on statements that if they were not able to go that they would seek to acquire weapons here, handguns, machine gun, and seek to attack very specifically police officers. so this is real. this is the concern about the lone wolf inspired to act without ever going to the middle east or the concern of once they get to the mideast acquire fighting skills capabilities and then attempting to return to the country. >> all right. joining me now for more on reaction to the story retired fbi special agent and former nypd sergeant manuel gomez with us. thank you. welcome. one thing i was glad to see in the investigation and complaint is that in fact they are monitoring social media. >> yes. >> and that's basically how they began to put this together?

>> sure. one of the things that the intelligence and law enforcement authorities in the u.s. and internationally our allies have become very good at is monitoring social media the internet, things of that nature. the main problem that we do have are people that don't go out and voice their opinion about violence against the united states, about wanting to join isis. >> it's interesting because i have people on social media that contact me, send me messages where i press a button and it translates from arabic. and i can actually read. there are thousands and thousands of communications that have been sent to me on twitter facebook and other social media that i have read that are beyond disturbing. do you think we really have a handle on this? >> we do. we could always have a better handle at it. the internet and communications are just growing exponentially year in and year out. the government is doing a great job of doing this just in this case. we have not had a suck eszful

attack on u.s. soil in such a long time. that being said the numbers are telling. isis is extremely good at recruiting people. they recruit an average of about 50 people a day. and it's just that statistically a matter of how many of these attacks could be prevented before one actually happens. >> so they first came to the attention of law enforcement when they expressed this on social media. the plan was that they would go and through istanbul they would travel there, then to syria and the plan was to join isis. and they had a backup plan. and the backup plan was if they couldn't join isis there they would be committing attacks here in the u.s. and in new york. what do you read out of this complaint? what do we learn from this? >> we learn that these people have one thing in their mind. and that's violence and death. if they weren't going to help the cause abroad in syria, they were going to do whatever they can. and that's exactly what isis and isil is saying. what they're saying if you can't come and join our cause here,

take an ax, bat, gun, do whatever you can, take to the streets, kill law enforcement, kill military. and do whatever you can for the cause in your own backyard. >> why are so many young people drawn to this barbaric evil group? in other words you have people in great britain, the united states, elsewhere flocking to join these animals. what is the allure? what is the draw for them do you think? >> it's the classic gang mentality. back in the day the youth would join gangs to be part of something. these were people that were either depressed or didn't belong -- or feel they had a sense of belonging to an entity. and here is isis putting out these amazing website productions calling to them saying, hey, be part of this. be part of this greater cause. and also affecting their religious beliefs. >> the fbi director says they're in 49 of 50 states. so this is just the tip of the iceberg, right? >> absolutely. a lot more to come. >> if you listen to president

and i know because of what they send me that they are reporting what it is they are finding. if our government doesn't have the resources to fully monitor social media, isn't it better that we know who they are and maybe have the capacity to track them down? >> couple of things sean. they're engaging in cyber jihad in the sense that they not only use this twitter for example for propaganda purposes they use it to raise money, and they also use it for recruitment. and a foreign terrorist organization, which isis is a designated terrorist organization, the law is very clear that they cannot receive any type of aid or service or it's a violation of federal law. so they ought to take down these -- >> last week i got into a big fight with a guy identifying himself as jihadi johnny. so i just started saying he was a coward and started, you know pushing him to reveal himself in the hopes. and he was threatening me, kind of, you know, saying things to me that were not exactly nice.

but then the hope that we can maybe track these people down. in other words, why put them in to hiding? and secondly, once you close down one account, what i've seen what i've learned, is they just open another account. >> that is true sean, except that it's against federal law to aid these individuals. we wouldn't let isis take out an ad in "new york times" to recruit people to go overseas and kill americans. we wouldn't allow that. and we should not allow twitter to use social media -- >> but don't you want to know what they're thinking? because they also communicate with each other. if we shut them down, aren't we shutting down a potential avenue to catch them and apprehend them or bomb the crap out of them? >> well, sean their recruitment has increased because of social media. it has not diminished. there are more of them going overseas than ever before and it's all because of social media. it seems to me that twitter ought to do like google for example and facebook and take

welcome back to "hannity." it was just 24 hours ago that the verdict was announced in the "american sniper" murder trial case. eddie ray routh was found guilty by a jury of his peers of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison.

joining me now kevin lacy, he was friends with chris kyle and he served alongside him in iraq. kevin also helped train bradley cooper for his role in the movie. also with us forensic psychiatrist dr. michael arembrula, testified for the prosecution in the case and kimberly, co-host of "the five." kevin, i know this has been a tough trial for the family. i know taya i know wayne, i know his brother. gotten to know the family. i love them all. what was their reaction last night? >> you know, i haven't spoken with any of the family but i hadn't really followed the trial. watching your program last night and saw the verdict come down. the first thing i could think about, chris's kids chad's daughter. it's a painful and tragic reality they have to live in. and it's final. it's something we have to deal with. and i think february 2nd is something that changed their lives. for me as a s.e.a.l. and former s.e.a.l., i've lost a lot of friends along the way and now as health care provider,

physician's assistant there's a grieving process. i think this trial loomed over that grieving process. i hope now we can adjust and realize what life's going to be like going on without chris and chad. >> why did taya walk out during closing arguments by the defense? >> i'm not 100% sure. but watching your show last night -- >> i don't blame her by the way. she's been through a lot. >> yeah, it's been tough on the family. like i said the grieving process has been two years plus now and this trial has loomed over and taking that next step was the closure we received last night. >> yeah. doctor, you testified on behalf of the prosecution in this case. tell me why this defense is so hard to work in a court. >> typically the insanity defenses are raised in more serious types of felony cases like murder for example or homicide. when a jury ponders relieving

somebody of what they did in the face of somebody whose life was taken, i think that's where the rubber meets the road. and that makes it very difficult to make that kind of decision. >> yeah. all right. k.g., you were a -- >> former homicide prosecutor. >> former homicide prosecutor. this really hurt watching this. i got to know the family. wayne, taya wonderful people. taya wonderful testimony. she was holding chris's dog tags when she testified. >> i was getting the kids into the, you know, the family car to go out to dinner because since i hadn't heard from him -- well, first of all, leann chad's wife called me said have you heard from the guys? i haven't heard from them. so i called once and didn't get an answer. and then -- i believe so.

i didn't get an answer. at least i think i did. but then i -- then i texted are you okay. i'm getting worried. it's kind of hard not to put some of it together that i haven't heard from him and i'm worried and i haven't heard from him and then a police officer shows up. a lot of times in the military there's rumors somebody got hurt or something's gone down but i knew from experience where you don't go to that place until you believe it until it's earned because you can borrow a whole lot of trouble. i did see him say hey, mark, what's up? like i'm going to believe the best. he said have you seen chris's truck? and i said, no, mark, i haven't. what's going on? and he said, he goes well i think chris has been hurt. >> what do you think the evidence was in this case that the jury was out less than two hour sns. >> well i think the prosecution's case was very powerful. keep in mind that the defense

has the burden to show that the defendant didn't understand the difference between right and wrong. and i think they clearly failed with their burden. when you look at the defendant's own words, which was very powerful evidence that came in against him, that statement right after he had murdered chris and chad. they heard that. then you saw what the prosecution presented in terms what seemed like he was trying to fabricate or make a case for himself. that was crucial testimony from the officers saying, oh i'm feeling a little paranoid or schizophrenic today. that looks like a setup. the jury didn't buy it and it was swift justice. >> we have some eddie ray routh's video confession the day he was murdered. here's the video i think played a very big part in this. >> i didn't want to or didn't -- i had to. you know that situation i was in today. >> kimberly, he went onto say i

gave them a fair chance. he shot them in the back. >> no that's what a coward does. and here the jury clearly felt he intended to kill, that he knew what he was doing with his actions. you can't just say, oh i'm feeling mentally ill. that's not enough. that's not the standard. you have to show clearly did he know the difference between right and wrong and statements and his actions. >> it only works 2% of the time. >> and doesn't matter if you voluntarily intoxicated yourself and drank or took drugs. the law will not excuse murder when you do a voluntary act like that. nor should it. >> kevin are you happy with the verdict here? what do you think it's going to take for the family? it's going to take a long time for these families -- i don't know how you recover. these men sacrifice so much. they come back from war and they'd been risking their lives every day and trying to help people and this is what happens. it's such a tragedy. >> you know, the loss of mark lee and ryan joe was tough on chris. and we've all lost a lot of fellow team guys. it's that grieving process. i think this trial was something

so we're headed to cpac tomorrow. we'll be interviewing most of the major 2016 presidential candidates. here with me to break down the gop field is the author of best selling book "things that matter, three decades of passions pastimes and politics," "new york times" number one best seller, dr. charles krauthammer. what would you like me to ask every candidate? is there a particular question or any one question you would want most answered as i interview them on thursday and friday? >> well, look, i think you've got to ask them what's your program? in other words, we talk about reform. it's not enough to attack obama. everybody in the field can easily attack obama. but obama's not running. it's good if you're able to make a case against hillary. there are a lot of cases you can make. wall street, about the way they have been running after money all their lives, how unreliable they are and also the fact that hillary, you ask does she stand for anything? and it's really hard to answer that other than hillary, like

clintons do. but i think the republicans have to have a program. doesn't have to have a nine-point program, but he has to explain how he's going to address the real problems. the worst polling number of the 2012 election was the one where they asked which candidate cares about someone like you. and obama won that one i think it was 81 to 19. >> wow. >> saddam would have been higher than that. that's a 62-point gap. >> ouch. >> you have got to be able to make a connection. now, i know there's a cliche but there are some candidates who have it whatever it is and they're the ones we're going to need. because i think a young, vigorous articulate candidate articulate candidate can substantively be able to go up against hillary, and win >> i agree everything you're saying i agree that there is a country as bad as obama is almost getting as open-for me,

it's simple, i want someone going to battle our enemy that is coming to america, again. i want someone to secure the border, balance budgets and stop immorality of robbing from future generations i want someone to help america be energy independent i love school choice. simple, but would change the country. i'm looking for the most-conservative candidate with a vision they can articulate and inspire the american people to get behind, and win. >> that is the right attitude because look. in two elections, that had to do only with congress, 2010, 2014, we destroyed the democrats because off year elections are

not run on issues. but then when you add a candidate at the top, as you do on a presidential election, that tells you, if you can run on the issues if you can articulate america being strong it's not hard to do. if you can make that case, you're going to win. we know republican policies prevail. >> thank you joining me now is the man that organized cpac this year. >> it's an honor to be back this year. i know i will be speaking friday. but will -- i will have an opportunity, you have ted cruz marco rubio, jeb bush scott walker, rick perry, let's see, rick santorum donald trump.

tell us why this is so important i look at this as post-labor day. of this is the beginning. >> this is where it starts, sean. what is great for accidents come interesting around the country is that they're going to hear from the next president of the united states because i'm bull wrish to stop chances from picking up a third win. >> i agree. people ask me who do you want? i have not decided i'm looking for the most-conservative candidate because conservative solutions work with an inspiring vision to solve nation's problems, that can articulate that vision with passion, and win. that is what i'm looking for. >> yes. that is right. i mean we've been talking about the fact we have a really good and deep bunch.

almost everyone we've been talking about is running. i think these activists are going to hear the pitch and it's going to have a big impact on what happens. >> i think i'm going to be interviewing some of the candidates in the round on stage, out in radio road. can we give people a hint of what i'm doing? >> sure. you're going to be sitting down with two of the candidates jeb bush and marco rubio asking them for 20 minutes all kinds of questions that are on the minds of conservatives and going to sit down with ted cruz and donald trump, and you're going to ask them questions after they give remarks the key this year is that you don't get to come to the room without answering the questions asked of you. >> matt, thank you very much. when we come back, we need your help and the interviews of the day. and we want your input and help. next.
