2:00 pm
country's financial policy robert benmosche dead at age 70. heldole everyone i'm kimberly guilfoyle along with juan williams, eric bolling. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." day two of cpac and a new batch of gop stars. >> imagine if we had a commander in chief that understood that the way to defeat isis is not to find them a job, imagine a president who doesn't travel the world bad mouthing america. we survived jimmy carter. we will survive the obama years too. there is nothing wrong with america that cannot be fixed with new leadership.
2:01 pm
we must rise and stand with our forefathers who stared down the king. we must rise as free men and women and reclaim our birth right. we must protect and defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. >> rubio perry and paul followed by republicans speaking to win over a lot of critics within the party today. here is jeb bush defending his stance on immigration. >> you said they broke the law. it's not a felony. it's an act of love. you also said that you support a pathway to citizenship. >> the simple fact is there is no plan to deport 11 million people. we should give them a path to legal status where they work, don't receive government benefits, where they don't break the law where they learn english and where they make a contribution to our society.
2:02 pm
that's what we need to be focused on. >> bush also addressed his controversial position on common core. >> is common core a federal takeover? >> no. here is where i think conservatives and myself are deeply concerned with this president and this department of education there is a risk that they will intrude and they have as it relates to race to the top. the role of the federal government is to provide incentives for more school choice. >> sean hannity interviewed jeb and joins us live in a little while. exciting times for the republican party if you watch enthusiasm people with fresh ideas who will win the day? any standouts? >> i think rand had a lot of supporters there. he did very, very well. marco rubio did well. i always liked rick perry. it felt like he was trying too
2:03 pm
hard. he got through the three points and the crowd erupted in applause. donald trump, donald are you not? you say you are 75% in. you are pregnant or you are not, donald. and jeb again not his crowd. answered sean's questions pretty well as best he could but he is not going to win them over. he said something like they started to boo him at one point and he said i will take that a as a maybe and if i can be your second choice i will take that, as well. >> a little positive attitude can help persuade. >> i think he deserves some credit for showing up. jeb bush knows that is not going to be a friendly audience but he had guts to argue his point. i think it is tough because common core is such a complex issue and really hard for him to explain. it will probably be hard for him to explain during the debate.
2:04 pm
my two favorite standouts were marco rubio. i really think that he is going to do a lot of really good things. also i do caution to look at the ranking. you see certain contenders do really well and don't go on to advance as far as we thought they would. rubio is a standout but i liked carly fiorina. she is impressive. i have been watching her since her days at hewlett-packard. >> and a follow up with that. some people were suggesting after hearing her speak and her vigor not afraid to take shots that the democratic favorite people thinking about potential vice presidential choice. >> she would be an excellent pick. i think she could be the right woman who strikes the right tone and tenor to go after hillary and not in a way that hillary
2:05 pm
could portray herself as a victim. i think she could do that pitch perfect. i think it would be difficult for a man to do. the clintons know they try to say he bullied her by marching beyond the podium and she played the victim. she is very good at playing the professional victim. fiorina is very shrewd. she could be the perfect attack dog. >> might be a stroke of genius. what stood out to you? >> what is interesting to me is before jeb bush gets on stage there is rush limbaugh saying basically obama and jeb could share the same world view, america is imperfect and needs to be fix. then you had laura ingram giving a speech at cpac right before the man speaks and says jeb and hillary could be on the same ticket that basically jeb is
2:06 pm
the guy that could explode the gender gap because his wife buys so much jewelry. >> i don't know about that. >> that was harsh and personal. what struck me was the difference in world view given all that we have been talking about with regard to isis and the war against terror. here you have the candidates on stage and you hear rand paul stand up and rand paul says there's too much intervention. we conservatives know that government doesn't always work at home. why do we think it will work abroad? he gets loud applause. you listen to not only fiorina you listen to walker, cruz. these guys all say obama is a big nut because he is not taking isis are not being more aggressive. it's a split i think within the party. >> i think that this came off to me as somebody saying we all believe that we should be getting more involved versus
2:07 pm
sometimes the throttle back that we have seen in the past, much more aggressive rhetoric as it comes to foreign policy and national security. >> why vice president? fiorina is so impressive let's talk president. my wife loves her. i know she can create a lot of energy. i want to talk about governor bush. he is not going to win them over. he knows that. why can't republicans play to the base? it's called a base for a reason. you have to build the base before you get on the podium. romney had this problem last time. why didn't he go to one tea party rally. just say i like you guys. i think goodvernor bush is playing defense because he didn't address that. >> he has to play defense because the base will never embrace common core. the conservative right won't
2:08 pm
embrace common core and have a hard time embracing immigration. called immigration act of love and they have the hard time getting past that. not to say that he won't win a nomination to be the republican nominee. why try even to do that. you look almost hypocritical. >> i think you got to show up. if you are president of the united states you go where you are not popular and don't have the house packed. obama goes where he has the house packed. i think he has to say his ideas are involving education and every child in the country should get the same benefit of a quality education and shouldn't matter about what block your parents live on depending on the public school in that area. >> i don't think there is a republican out there that would disagree with what you said. the conservative right, the
2:09 pm
people who are against common core. >> i don't know how many times people have to say this. it's not a national federal program. common core came from the governors. people like jeb bush when he was governor of florida. you have lots of republican governors saying i didn't mean it. they all embraced common core as a way to guarantee good education for all children no matter what your zip code or your state. >> let's not confuse school choice with common core curriculum. >> what i was speaking to specifically was education and the whole fabric of it. it is a much larger issue than just common core. so if you just focus on that you are focusing on one like pinprick of it versus education in this country, the united states of america, about being competitive against other countries where we are failing in math and science. we need to increase literacy.
2:10 pm
they are talking about giving away free junior college. well, guess what i want someone that can read and write well in grade school. >> any indication that common core is enabling our children to become better students in math, science. >> you have to achieve. a lot of this gets caught up in people who are opposed to testing. in general the idea has been that the states need to come together and say we are accountable. we not going to write off some kids and say some kids are not smart or could never go anywhere. you know what president bush used to call it was the bigotry of low expectations. >> i think no child left behind has left a bad taste in the mouths of conservatives because it was without federal money and too top down and too heavy. i looked into common core. i could argue the negative things about it. but to kimberly's point there
2:11 pm
are benefits of common core that some of the curriculum is challenging to students and it is a unique way to look at it and make their learning stronger. there are some positive pieces. it's not completely that. >> you can build on it. >> we don't have enough time to discuss it but i want to get back to something that juan said about the republican party being split on intervention. it is a strong point that rand paul makes because of the antidemocracy promotion nation building agenda that people saw with the bushes even within the republican party. they do see a little bit of it with president obama when he talks about getting jobs and doing nation building in the middle east and creating a jobs program over there. you are right again about jeb showing up. i think it is really important. >> better than chris christie. chris christie has not handled the base. he is hostile to them. he doesn't want to deal with the base. at least jeb gives them some -- >> he is on defense.
2:12 pm
i don't think it has to do with policy like common core. it's just the way that these establish republicans talk to the base. it was a problem with mccain and romney. they are trying to koezcozy up to people who aren't going to vote for them. they are like nerds who are nervous around the cheerleaders. they are not going to date you anyway. >> that's a good point. >> the football players are all gone and the girls need a date. >> when the establishment republicans stands up there and tries to appeal to the base it falls flat for me. >> guess what, cpac isn't the rise and fall of the next president of the united states. you have to get in there and get after it and act like you want the job. when i look at people i see people that want the job. jeb bush isn't like great another one. he likes like he wants the job and he is out there.
2:13 pm
>> let me just make one last point before we go i just want to say this, scott walker came in, we didn't mention scott walker during this segment. i think scott walker is doing well. at cpac i was taking aback because he took on unions in wisconsin he can take on isis. i was like slow down. >> i agree. he needs messaging help. walker needs a messaging team to help him. >> that's why this process is important because you have to get out there. not everybody needs to be glued like face planted on the teleprompter. can you hold your own in the build of debate or let candy crowley back you into a corner? >> exactly. >> there is no doubt about that. it's better that he stumble a little bit now than later. >> let the republicans fight it
2:14 pm
out. ufc cage fight style. we want a winner. >> let us leave it. was that a stumble? >> anytime you bring isis into it. >> put an ace bandage on it. when we come back more with the man who conducted that interview with jeb bush at cpac today. sean hannity joins us next.
2:15 pm
i've always loved exploring and looking for something better. that's the way i look at life. especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib a type of irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. i was taking warfarin, but wondered if i kept digging could i come up with something better. my doctor told me about eliquis...
2:16 pm
for three important reasons. one, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. and three, unlike warfarin there's no routine blood testing. don't stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. those three important reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you.
2:17 pm
2:18 pm
♪ back now to cpac and we are joined by sean hannity who has been conducting interviews with a bunch of potential 2016 contenders. i have been to cpac a number of times, i know you have too. before we get to your big interview withe jeb bush what are people saying? give us a back story. who are they fired up about? >> it's really interesting because as a conservative it wasn't really a good time after mitt romney lost in 2012. one thing that is almost universal here that every single person that i run into is pretty confident that whoever wins the republican nomination will be the next president.
2:19 pm
it's talked about openly. there is a real feeling of confidence that obama has so screwed up the economy, so weak on foreign affairs that they think is a big opportunity. it is interesting that they support other candidates. the one thing that really stands out there is a lot of happiness and joy. one little thing, obama bashing going on on the stage. what people are talking about behind the scenes is talking about how do we get 50 million people out of poverty 50 million people off of food stamps repealing and replacing health care, balancing budgets. those are the things that people are really talking about. i went out to dinner and that was a big topic of conversation. >> so we have been talking here about what 2016 will be about.
2:20 pm
will it be about domestic, economy, jobs and middle class? where are people headed? which direction? >> i can tell you the greatest were for solutions to problems that we're facing. there is a real sense that america is in decline right now. that's the bad news but there is a sense that conservatives will provide answers. there is some anger, a little bit of frustration with congress. there is a feeling that maybe they haven't been strong enough, a little too timid. we saw what happened in the senate on the issue of defunding the president's executive health care order, but putting that aside i think the one thing they are saying is we have the answers. balanced budgets, limited government greater freedom, more responsibility securing the border. all of these things are what they think about, a message that
2:21 pm
resonates with voters. >> no isis talk? no how will we defend ourselves overseas, none of that? >> i missed that question. there is a lot of music playing in the background. >> i want to know if there is talk about isis and defending ourselves overseas and how do we handle the terror threat? >> there is almost a disbelief at how the president has dug himself in here. i got a chance to speak today one of the points that i made is that isis, the jordan yns lose one pilot and king abdullah of jordan after the pilot was burned to death and the world saw that horror he acted immediately. similarly 21 christians simultaneously beheaded and president of egypt unleashed the military of the egyptian army on al qaeda.
2:22 pm
compare that to president obama he sees the beheading of james foley and gives a statement and three minutes later he was on a golf course. there is a sense that this is a real threat and not just america. it's not just the middle east but the entire world that there are radical islamists. newt gingrich made a strong point that got a strong reception saying they have been at war with us since 1979 and the iranian hostage crisis. we had not been at war with them and they are winning that war. there is a sense that we need somebody that will win this war and treat it as a war. >> it's kimberly. america is crying out for leadership. i think that is very clear in this moment in time in history is one that hopefully will be defined in a strong way with america taking the forefront in terms of being a world power and a leader that helps other countries in need as well. what did you get the sense in
2:23 pm
terms of the crowd about any standouts thus far that they feel are embodying those qualities? >> i don't want to -- we will have a straw poll by the end of the weekend. it has always had a big impact. i know rand paul was the last two years. there is a big rand paul contingent here and has been for his dad. i got a big reception. i went down the list of names of all of the candidates. he got a big reception. scott walker, ted cruz. when i interviewed jeb bush today when i spoke at 11:00 i didn't interview him until the 2:00 hour. when i mentioned his name it was almost universal boo. when he came out and started answering my questions and i spent a good nine minutes just on immigration because it is so important to the conservative movement i was surprised how the
2:24 pm
room in three hours had shifted rather dramatically. i think he did a good job of winning over the crowd and giving answers. one moment he got booed. we are going to air it tonight. it was very interesting people wanted to hear from the candidates. i got the suspicion that a lot of people like me having not made up their mind. >> how are you? how tall are you? >> here it comes. it's juan williams. >> how tall? you don't have to be a candidate. how tall are you? >> i'm almost 6'1". i know i look small compared to jeb bush. >> the governor is towering over you. >> what do you want? i'm over 6 feet tall. >> let me ask you. i see the governor out there. i'm thinking they are battling for the establishment. he goes after chris christie and says my state,
2:25 pm
was governor we had a aaa bond rating. i didn't see that for chris christie. did you take that as a shot and establishment fight? >> you can read into it anything you want but there is certainly a battle in the more tea party conservative wing as you have battles in the democratic party. i was a little disappointed with chris christie. chris christie was the only one that didn't -- refused to do an interview with me. requested it a number of weeks back. i think the toughest question he has to answer is that the state of new jersey since he has been governor has been downgraded eight times. that's a lot of down grades. >> that's what i was talking about. you had trump on stage. trump says -- is this a charade. is he there for ratings books, tv appearances?
2:26 pm
>> i will tell you that his team around him i asked them on stage and they said 75% to 80% his team telling me privately he is in. he has hired people as we know as reported this week on the ground in iowa. they are telling me behind the scenes that trump is in and wants to shape things up. more importantly they believe and he is saying he thinks he can win. i think he can have a very interesting role in this because i think he will add a lot of toughness, bold, politically incorrect speech to a presidential campaign. from our vantage point i think that is all good for everybody. >> sean mother jones they are trying to generate controversy. they didn't like your x ray vision jokes. should they lighten up? >> well, all right. i have been telling this joke.
2:27 pm
let me give you the bottom line here. so in the world of obama seven years into his presidency everything is george w. bush's fault. if you are feeling sad it is bush's fault. if you drink too much it's not jack daniels fault but bush's fault. i say some of you are pregnant, not your fault. crowd laughs. not his fault. whose fault is it? they say george w. bush and then i go into my clinton impression and i say i can't blame bush for that it's probably my fault and usually gets a good laugh. >> i would tell you not to quit your day job and stick with -- instead of comedy. by the way, i'm surprised people haven't tried to draft you because walking in with you at some of these events is like
2:28 pm
walking in with mick jagger. women are fainting. you are like a rock star. we won't let you go here at the fox news channel. >> i got to tell you something because we have been friends for a long time. you are a young conservative. a lot of young people in this audience gives me hope for the future. i love you guys. you guys are the best. >> we love you, too. make sure to catch the exclusive interview tonight at 10:00 p.m. eastern and up next on "the five" he can't get your guns but he is coming for your bullets. president obama's ammunition ambition straight ahead. huh, fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance. everybody knows that. well, did you know pinocchio was a bad motivational speaker? i look around this room and i see nothing but untapped potential. you have potential. you have...oh boy.

constitution. and the president of the united states is bound by our constitution. so i believe in the second amendment. it does provide for americans the right to bear arms for their protection, for their safety for hunting, for a wide range of uses. >> well that was then. now he is seeking to impose gun control on the nation with a ban on the most popular ammunition for the ar 15. he tried to ban the rifle itself but failed so now his atf is planning to restrict the bullet that goes inside of it. you ban the bullet you ban the gun. >> that's right. it would be akin to back in the day if you wanted to stop freedom of the press banning ink. you can't do that. what is he going to do next? if he tries to stop people from driving ban tires.

you cannot undermine the bill of rights via executive order. that is what he is trying to do. he knows he can't get it done through congress. he can't do this. >> rather than executive order it would probably create such an uproar he is going to go through the atf much like when he uses the epa to get carbon regulations through. >> this is all about him like this is what i'm going to do, everything i feel like doing whether you like it or not deal with the mess. now there is some hand guns capable of firing the same ammunition. i don't know. i don't know why he is doing this. it is very personal and feels like an infringement on the second amendment. >> i will tell you why. police forces around the country have asked that something be done about these bullets. these are bullets that kill
