>> on the "buzz beater," the press is treated to a lot of media backing at the sea pack. >> i don't care what they write in the "new york times", they can keep it. >> the days of the media calling shots in the primary debate are over. how many think it is a good idea for to us have 23 debates in front of people like chris matthews? >> does that appeal work? the candidates are trying to get favorable coverage. should journalists believe donald trump when he says, this time, this time he will probably run for president? we look at the gotcha questions from scott walker even the anchors saying they get a harder
2:01 pm
time than the democrats. obama insider says the president is warn out by the cable thing, once disrespectful to maureen dowd and againsts sniping at for. >> fox news, you know has come at least some elements have come to represent the voice of the right on cable tv. >> i have some questions for david axelrod and the former mtv star the libertarian known as kennedy. >> i have been a misfit and that is where i have been more comfortable. it would not be authentic or right to adopt a convenient set of beliefs from either side. >> i am howard kurtz and this is "media buzz."
2:02 pm
>> there is more journalists than ever before at the conservative gathering at maryland national harbor and i asked reporters how it became such a media mecca. >> the presence of all the media people and the cameras and blogers and writers and columnists manage any file the importance? >> the irony is when you have a lot of cameras and reporters it magnifies the impact, but, at the same time they spend a lost time attacking. >> is it a bill political story or in the media bubble? >> within the media bubble and the base. that is a fair statement. >> when you have a lost activists you get a lot of bloggers and reporters and a lost cameras which attracts more blogers and activists and everyone else. >> the media have to show up? >> we want to hear what they say and be able to talk to everyone without going do alaska to find out what they think. >> joining us is fox news
2:03 pm
contributor and co-author of "end of discussion," and how the industry makes america less free and fun and a national journal columnist and kirstin powers. how much 6 the an misty at cpac is deserved? >> it is part of the primary process to say i am the guy who dislikes the media but it is honesty and dealing with the actual media. to me, a candidate has to be realistic about hostility he will face in questioning as we have seen with scott walker especially and that matters and they have to face up to that. >> what struck me, it wasn't just a series of of applaud but everyone in the media is biased against every single republican. >> i don't think that is too far
2:04 pm
off. there is a real bias we have seen against republicans in the media that has gotten worse. i don't think it is this thing that has been constant there is, especially with a lot of these new liberal outlets bloggers with a lost influence, they are under attack. >> but --. >> no, no, no, that said it is fought like they get a pass from the conservative media. to talk about the debate the fox news debate were some of the toughest debates for republicans. the idea that they will switch and not get not have accountability, that isn't correct. >> i was trying to make a distinction between cable pundits and newspaper reporters some who try to be fair. ron, you noted the irony on the conversation of cpac the same candidate beating up on the media are trying to get favorable coverage from journalist. >> sure we deserve it at an
2:05 pm
event where there are conservative activists and candidates want us to tow the line. same thing when we go to the groups, the folks in the middle, the mainstream media not working partisan, you look at those reporters we tend to skew to the left. sometime we are not very good about both being accurate being accountable, and being objective. >> that is a fair statement and does it not help when the daily beast had to retract a story picked up accusing scott walker of cutting funds in the state university system in wisconsin over sexual assault reporting and it turns out it was untrue. sean hannity was a co-host of cpac practically interest offing so many candidates asking jeb bush about immigration and most said he does well. do you think that mainstream media because they like jeb bush
2:06 pm
treat him on a curve? >> it exceeded expectations stories from the reporters than in the room, necessarily, not that he did badly. i think he did well. but there was more enthusiasm in the headlines. i think that to the point about not getting a pass, he sat down with hannity and asked tough stuff and chris christie sat down with laura ingraham and was asked tough stuff. >> laura was aggressive with chris christie. >> distinction is someone like laura interviewing he is not asking questions about the stereotypes and that happens with the jezebel story and i thought i found it hard to believe, hard did believe that account walker to believe but it is not heart for the website to believe it because they believe scott walker wants to tie women down and make them have babies could it makes sense they would not report the sexual assaults
2:07 pm
that is the bias, with preordained ideas about republicans because you are not around them. >> and the press that loved chris christie is writing him off and we are two years out. >> i have waited to talk about donald trump and he was at cpac and we will look at that in a moment but this is how long the donald has been flirting with running for president with a clip going back to 1999. roll it. >> everyone who runs for public office has to be able to look at camera and tell people why they should vote for him. >> i look at you. i don't have to look at a camera i will look at you and say i would be a great president if i decide to do it. i know how things should run and this country has not run properly. >> first he says to the "washington post" he is more serious and hired political staff and says at the conference 75 to 80 percent chance he is run.
2:08 pm
how serious should he be taken? >> he is not a serious man. if he runs he is not going to be president. he is a carnival backer. >> he has a long and flawless record of thinking he is awesome. >> he puts on a go show but he would not run a good country, not a serious presidential candidate. >> we went through this four years ago and he hyped the possibility of running to the point where he renewed the "apprentice." >> i don't understand why he is taken seriously and i don't understand why people want to hear what he has to say. >> because the media love to write about the donald because he is entertaining with the big personality and simple pollutions and he loves to get into it with the press on twitter denouncing someone as a moron and that sort of thing. >> we should stop talking about him right now. >> that is my cue to move on.
2:09 pm
>> and with cpac there was the straw poll, 3,000 voters, people there who voted and rand paul won for the third straight year and scott walker finishing second. does that matter? is that like the media getting something to write about? i don't think it matter as ton. it is well-known that the paul groups are well organized. that matters. activists should be well organized. perhaps the unexpectedly strong performance from scott walker mean as little bit of something but we are early out so... >> if you look at the last time it was ron paul who did not get the nomination but the 2012 straw poll it was santorum in second and mitt romney in first. this far owe it is not predictive. >> i was going to say, as a political reporter you have to take a long view and realize you can never tell in the moment which matters, very few of them actually matter long term but
2:10 pm
you can discertain a little bit out of everything and i agree the fact that scott walker did relatively well, better-than-expected, that shows he is a candidate to watch right now. >> and now, on the big scary showdown for dhs with house republicans not getting a three way extension pass with a one week stopgap extension and the media knowing this is a washington dance hype this and everyone knew in the end that it would go a day or two and the department of homeland security is not going to shut down. anyone disagree? >> it was everhyped and is there a point it does not pay off. the american people are like, we do this every three months. there has to be a point --. >> right. >> i could not disagree more this is not about ratings or about who is going to win or lose and whether it shuts other doesn't. all they did was extend it a week. this is about our government and how our leaders act. they are acting like little kid,
2:11 pm
fault even able to pass a budget for the most important thing in our government. >> that is a story the political dysfunction, absolutely but i am talking about, here is what will happened a midnight on friday. >> who won? who love? everyone lost. >> i think it is an pent -- an important story. in the past we would be there until midnight wait willing to see and this time it is like okay whatever. they are wearing us down with what i consider their extremely irresponsible behavior. i think that it does deserve coverage because you should not operate the government this way. >> it citizens coverage but i think the countdown clock nature of the coverage is silly. >> game is given more coverage unanimous the dysfunction. >> we have a moment to take a break. send a tweet, do you think donald trump will run? should we take him seriously? we will read the messages later or you can e-mail us.
2:12 pm
we will look at the rant that got keith olbermann suspended again. stay tuned. oh i'm on the cookie air diet. you just... and that's it. i prefer real food fruit, nuts, and whole grains. great grains cereal starts whole and stays whole. more processed flakes look nothing like natural grains. let's get real. for most people, earning cash back ends here, at the purchase. but there's a new card in town. introducing the citi® double cash card. it lets you earn cash back when you buy and again as you pay. that's cash back twice. it's cash back with a side of cash back.
2:13 pm
the citi double cash card. the only card that lets you earn cash back twice on every purchase with 1% when you buy and 1% as you pay . with two ways to earn, it makes a lot of other cards seem one-sided. now? can i at least put my shoes on? if your bladder is calling the shots ... you may have a medical condition called overactive bladder ... ...or oab you've got to be kidding me. i've had enough! it's time to talk to the doctor. ask your doctor how myrbetriq may help treat... ...oab symptoms of urgency frequency, and leakage. which may mean fewer trips to the bathroom. myrbetriq (mirabegron) may increase your blood pressure. myrbetriq may increase your chances... ...of not being able to empty your bladder. tell your doctor right away if you have... ...trouble emptying your bladder or have a weak urine stream. myrbetriq may affect... ...or be affected by other medications... ...so tell your doctor about all the medicines you take. before taking myrbetriq, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems. common side effects include

scott walker is now raising d ontes >> scott walker is raising money based on what he sees as intrusive reporters fighting back against the clueless and mindless journalistic herd and the gotcha game including what he thinks about giuliani saying president obama doesn't love america. >> there does seem to be a little bit of a double standard. the republicans tend to get asked the questions of their outlie others more than the
2:16 pm
democrats. >> you write in defense of gotcha questions and come out of the closet and say you are an admitted practitioner. >> think you. there should not be a double standard but there has to be room forgot what questions. as an interviewers, most of my questions i have asked democrats and republicans have been to get information or context. there are times i try to test them. i learned this coming bill clinton in arkansas. if i want do have control of the interview, that is my job, if i want to test him i ask the dumbest question. deliberately. you bet. you bet. now, there are gotcha answers and gotcha coverage and we can talk about that. so, or journalists asking republicans in particular outrageous questions are candidates balking because they are not able to finesse? >> there is a double standard and i will agree with george stephanopolis part of the issue
2:17 pm
is -- they are asked the different sorts of questions and here is the big one, they are asked of every single other republican. that almost never happens where democrats where the same question well he messed up so we will ask eight more of you. that does not happen on the left. that is a problem with walker. >> during iraq, like with john kerry it happened. >> not so were. the extent that the giuliani think was blown out of proportion is crazy. there is a difference with not being agency i'll -- agile and pushing back. walker is not doing it perfectly but is making and doing it in a step in the right direction. >> do you agree with guilt by association questions? >> i don't know specifically. there is more of that everyone
2:18 pm
denouncing something where if bill maher does and gives money no democrats have to announce. that does ham. i don't i don't think giuliani is a good example of that. i think scott walk are should have answered that. when someone says something that insendary: that does not strike me as a gotcha question. >> we all agree that the standards should apply equally are they part of the presidential marathon, we judge candidates by how they, all professional politicians will turn the question around and pivot an, but walker seems to say i am not playing this. >> if walk are said he loves the country but he is destroying it, it would not be adiaspore but he made it a gotcha question, with his answer.
2:19 pm
here is an a where we went too far, questions is fair the way we covered it was not. he said if i can take on 100,000 protesters i can do the same across the world. reporters say no, he is comparing union members with isis. that is not what he is doing. that is gotcha coverage. he was comparing fighting isis with the challenges -- it was silly but not comparing isis. >> we know, journalists know what he men, maybe it was expressed poorly, but, it is blown up as you say. >> some acted like they did not know what he meant saying he was comparing isis with union workers. he is wrong. that is not what he was doing. >> do you agree? >> i agree and the point on the patriotic question, the issue for the conservatives, the president calls us terrorists and suicide bombers and hostage takers takers takers and no one is asked if that is legitimate line of questioning.
2:20 pm
>> look, there is a doubling standard. this is in question. i do think there are things that are reasonable and if giuliani said this at a walker event, that is reasonable. if there was no connection between the two of them, i would say, okay, that is -- why like everyone being forced to denounce. >> this part is a debate that will continue influence the -- continue to influence and be heard throughout the campaign. >> now, next, a look at controversy surrounding keith olbermann and bill o'reilly straight ahead.
2:24 pm
students at penn state, who raised $123 million for cancer research. after the suspension, he said he was sorry. i apologize for the p su tweets i was stupid and way less mature than the student whose did such a great fundraising jobs texting us now to the hollywood reporter. he has a history of picking fights with ordinary people on twitter and the kids were raising charity money. >> look, he admitted it was stupid and it is pretty hard to win that battle when these are students doing something so selfless as raising money for cancer research. he knows that he was wrong. espn hired him because he is a person with strong opinions, he is very scaled at relaying them to an audience. he is going to occasionally go over the line. they have a lot of people like him if their stable. they get suspended too, i am
2:25 pm
not surprised. >> that is true. i thought that some of the controversy was being hut behind him at msnbc and he was involved in litigation but he apologized. and three was suspended. let me ask you about bill oh environmentally controversy, and we spent a lot of time on this last week about questions whether he embellished reporting. what is your take on how the flap the furor has played out? >> i think there is a temptation to compare it to the brian williams situation but it is a different threshold for a news anchor and opinion host. where there is some question about the facts or the interpretation of the facts in bill o'reilly's case, brian williams and the network have come out and said, he was wrong, what he did was wrong and they suspended him for six months, without pay and launched an
2:26 pm
investigation. i think there is a different bar there and bill has furiously debated his critics and invited hill on the show and he is doing battle what he does best. his audience loves to see him being the pugilist. >> f said he has answers many claims and they are by far left advocates including ""mother jones"," and responding to the accusation of the day is an exercise of futility but at the same time, a couple of media shiites have note the ratings have again up the past week when he is not talking about the controversy up 22 percent total viewers and 45 percent and what do you make of that? >> look, bill is at his best when he has an enemy to battle
2:27 pm
against, to fit and i think that he is legitimately rebutting the accusations and his audience are on his side and they want to see him do that. it is actually really good tv and, look, if he feels he has been maligned he has an enormous mega phone of big platform where he can go on and legitimately rebut all of the charges. >> high has made that point, not everyone has access to that kind of platform. let me move on to msnbc which everyone knows has a lot of ratings trouble and friday was the last day for two shows one hosted by the son of mia pharoah. >> great mysteries of the universe, how did we get here? is there an afterlife?
2:28 pm
and lady sex stuff. how does it work? >> what do you make of ronan getting a show? >> well, i was a little perplexed when they gave him the show because although he is self effacing on twitter and he has a big sole media following he is a smart guy, accomplished guy for someone sodown and he has been on some msnbc programs as a guest and contributor --. >> but the not a journalist. >> exactly. >> no hosting experience. >> no hosting expense -- experience so it was crazy and unfair to him to throw him into the frying pan like that even though it was a daytime show and maybe the ratings expectations are not so high as prime time. he obviously was not ready. it is hard to do television day in and day out. >> some make it look easy.
2:29 pm
what did you make of his parting joke about his father? >> it sort of book ended the whole experiment right? when he started the show there was all this serious debate about who his father was so he ended his show with another sort of tongue and cheek reference to his father whoever that is. >> it is either woody allen or frank sinatra. >> thank you for joining us from new york. >> coming up, david axelrod on why president obama gets so upset with some pundits and cable chatter especially on fox. >> why was new news given to giuliani attack the president than the controversy involving hillary clinton and joe joe biden? with the new angie's list app, you can get projects done in a snap. take a photo of your project or just

> >> the tweets are pouring in donald trump is a nonissue. he will not get the nomination regardless, he is a political joke. david axelrod is a journalist turned obama strategist and turn white house official and now msnbc commentator. he has a new book called "believer," we talk about the president and the press from berkeley. >> david axelrod welcome. >> good to be with you. >> every liberal commentator who i wash who i read, who i know, has in this second term expressed some disappointment and frustration with president obama's presidency. does that bother you? >> no, i think that part of what you need to do when you are the president of the united states or when you work for the president of the united states is take a longer view. it is very hard to judge a presidency in the moment. i think this presidency is going to stand up well. i am proud that he is the guy in my experience who is not perfect
2:34 pm
but a guy who has been willing to look longer, look at horizon and not get too bogged down in the --. >> but you write that the president told you the whole cable thing wears you out, i would not think if you were the president of the united states you would not worry about the cabling thing. >> that was three months into the pregnancy so everyone adjusts to the realities of 9 presidency. >> but speaking of which you are part of msnbc and in your role as come daughter when you occasionally and mildly criticize the president i feel like you are sort of holding back a bit and you are in the words, a believer. the believer title refers to more than my relationship with one person but with my belief in this system. >> how free do do you feel you can criticize the president?
2:35 pm
>> i feel free to contribution site. and it gets outsized attention. >> now, to the book, the 2008 campaign you bring the congressional up any of the dowd to talk to president obama and in your words, the president treats her, patronizing and disrespectful to her. he doesn't seem to like the press people that much? >> i mean that was -- he only read the book after it was in aren't and he reminded me that the thing that provoked him was that a column he thought was unfair to michelle, his wife. >> in that 2008 campaign your candidate got what i would say is the easiest ride from the press of anyone in modern political history. hillary clinton's people would complain to me about it all the time you concede that is true?
2:36 pm
>> we got pretty good treatment, not universal, but good treatment. it is also true that when you are campaigning a go campaign, a smart campaign, you tend to get better coverage than when you are not run a good campaign. >> sure, sure, and a negative note in the campaign came with the remarks, the votes of obama 's pastor, the former pastor and you say the votes appeared on fox with right wing shock jock sean hannity and went mainstream with "good morning america", are you saying the anti-american rantings were legitimate and push by fox? >> no, no no they were clearly legitimate story. they also were boiled down reel of decades of sermons by reverent wright and they did not characterize the whole of his
2:37 pm
life and statements. i never suggested it wasn't a story. >> on this point i cannot help notice that the president on the stump with some regulator takes swipes at fox news. doesn't that highlight the criticism? >> well, maybe. i don't know -- i would not necessarily single out news organizations that way. fox news has some elements that have come to represent the voice of the right on cable tv just as for some msnbc is representing the voice of the left and that is one of the features of our modern media. >> in the opinion program --. >> people sort themselves out ideologically and watch the programing that affirms their point view. >> write that a "washington post" reporter who works for joe biden was a constant companion and you confided and swore them
2:38 pm
to secrecy and doesn't that underscore the coziness of the campaign with the press corps? >> it is kind -- i never doubted that he, and richard has written things than challenging and i am sure shayla did, too but why -- something about me is i started off as a journalist, i don't view journalists as adversaries and i understand their jobs. when you travel with people day after day after day and you are having connections with them about the evens of the day, you do develop relationships. i don't think that impeaches their professionalism or mine. you have probably covered campaigns. >> a lost campaigns. >> and that is a natural thing. >> i was not suggesting -- i was talking about some some campaigns where they got along
2:39 pm
well with the press and some does not. and the disastrous debate with romney you said they are ripping your guy apart and msnbc, was the go to network for the obama campaign? >> obviously not that night. i joked that chris matthews, i didn't need to watch tv to hear what he was saying because it was saying as such a level it could be heard all around the globe. because this was a sense particularly among some of the folks who are opinion broadcasters that he had let down, they are vociferous as there was criticism on fox about romney's performance in the last debate where there was a sense three was not as challenging as he should have been on the part of some on the right who were

lisa kennedy montgomery, better known as kennedy, is not your typical cable news host having come to the game after hosting a late night alter naf it rock program on mtv. i sat down with her in new york. kennedy, welcome. >> thank you so much. >> what's with the what name are you that fame us some. >> no, i had too many names. they had to pare it down. >> you've been devotedquoted as saying yelling at people is boring tv. >> every once in a while you have to tweak the paradigms. it's fun to have conversations with people you totally disagree with. and actually -- >> and not get interrupted when you're trying to make a point? >> i try not to, but sometimes i can't help it. so that's sometime i really try to work on. but my senior producer will get

in my ear because we wear these devices called ifes if we can hear what people are saying. if i'm getting too hungry, he'll go honey badger honey badger. that's our code that i need to back off. >> do you have a code that you should get more angry? >> i am sure he would. we haven't met that scenario yet where he tells me to go for the kill early. >> you worked at mtv. has that experience helps you you at fox news? >> i think all of my experiences have certainly helped. mtv was great because i learned a lot about being a spontaneous performer and reacting to situations quickly. and it's obviously very different when pop culture is reacting. in breaking new, you have to go into the same part of your brain where you're able to be in the moment and actively listen so you can respond. >> your show is built around
2:46 pm
debating your libertarian views and to boil it down want to kind of keep government out of our lives or less intrusive in our lives. >> i actually like to put it in a more positive acceptssense. i love freedom. i'm opt in mystic that we can pursue our individual freedoms in a way that benefits everybody.in mystic that we can pursue our individual freedoms in a way that benefits everybody. and we can and we can party when we choose. >> are you pro-choice, pro gay marriage? >> >> i am pro gay marriage and ooifi'm a pro-life a pro-life libertarian. babies and babies and fetuses are sacred and i haven't seen a solid moral argument for abortion. i hope fewer people have abortions. i don't think it's i don't think it's my say to tell people when to make reproductive decisions necessarily, but i am still very much pro-life. >> are you not a big fan of
2:47 pm
democrats, for example? >> i'm not a big fan of statism. i'm a political independent. and there are democrats believe it or not who are part of the liberty caucus on capitol hill who have ideas about limiting government. i don't like i don't like making the federal government bigger, i don't like making it more than intrusive. >> and some of it has happened in the republican administration. >> there is no doubt about it, >> there is no d which is why i'm an independent. it's hard to tell at this point which party want to the spend more money. >> since so much of the media debate and so much of the way cable news segments are booked is right and left democrat, republican strategist or consultants, are you a bit of a square peg/round hole? >> sometimes. but in my personal life and professionally, i've always been kind of a misfit. and that's where i've always been more comfortable. it wouldn't be authentic or right for me to adopt a convenient set of beliefs from
