>> ford never made it to the runway. he crashed on to a neighboring golf course. video shows the plane as it starts to go down. witnesses say it hit a tree along the way. doctors playing on the course rushed to the wreckage and pulled ford out. he cut his head and reportedly had some broken bones but was expected to recover. his son tweeting dad is okay. battered okay. he is every bit the man you would think he is. he is an incredibly strong man. investigators commending ford for bringing the man down where he did. there were a lot of homes in the area and it could have been much course. worse. >> was this pilot lucky? any time a human being is involved in an accident is a lucky individual. >> ford has been involved in two other crashes once in a helicopter during a training

flight another when winds pushed his plane off the runway. he helped rescue a missing hiker and a boy scout in two separate incidents in 2001. the ntsb is involved at the golf course. >> lucky guy. glad he is okay this morning. >> on the edge of disaster a plane skidding off the snowy runway in new york city plowing into a fence and stop ago few feet from the cold icy waters. the question now, what exactly went wrong? anna kooiman is here with the latest. >> good morning to you. it could have been worse for the passengers on the plane. now the ntsb trying to figure out exactly what happened. the plane stopped feet from the east river. you sue the cockpit hanging over the icy waters. despite snow falling they are not sure if the weather is to blame. moments before had hit the

runway had been plowed two other planes landed safely there. the flight arriving from atlanta at 11:00 a.m. it veered off the runway the nose of the plane plowing through a fence coming to a stop feet from the water. >> we have an aircraft off the runway. >> it is closed the airport is closed. >> we have127 passengers and five crew members on board safely evacuated by sliding down the wing. 24 people were treated for minor injuries including three sent to the hospital. the plane's left wing broke causing a minor fuel leak which was quickly contained. passengers describe the moment of impact saying once landing the plane started rocking side to side and was going too fast. a terrifying experience but everywall everyone remained calmed and praised the pilots for quick thinking. >> i felt like the pilot was in control.

reporting good breaking action. whether changes constantly. just because a few minutes before the breaking action was good doesn't mean it is going to be for you. most people don't know when airplanes when you land the brakes are on your pedals. it is also what you use to steer. if you put more pressure on one side or the other it can cause you to skid like that. it will be interesting to see what happened here. >> what about harrison ford flying this vintage world war ii plane. he loves to fly. not his first crash. >> some people might wonder it was an old plane. but someone like harrison ford who has flown for years has it maintained well. it's a single engine airplane looking at the way he came in he was in a controlled flight meaning he was doing all of the emergency procedures he needed to do. that plane eventually is going to come down. i looked at the area he was crashed there was not another unpopulated area he could go. >> thank goodness doctors were

they often don't listen. the first thing you do when you get on the plane before the plane moves look ahead and find the closest emergency exit ahead of you and the closest one behind you. if it there is a crash it may be slow. count the number of seats between you and where you need to turn down the road to get out. both ahead of you and behind you so that if you need to get out of the plane you can then do it without seeing anything you can count the seats take a left or right. the second thing you want to do is not act without flight attendants first telling you to get out. they may want to only get out on one side if there's a fire on the other side. don't take anything with you. that slows you down. >> what you said about the flight attendants is so important. they are highly trained to handle the situations and help people get out safely. there's a difference between whether you are sitting in the aisle and the window as far as what you should do. >> if you are on the aisle you are right there where you can get into the traffic flow to get

out. but if you are on the window then you are kind of blocked to get to the aisle. if you are athletic enough just climb across the seats. >> in my military training we did under water training they dunk us in what was supposedly a crash plane and we had to figure out how to get out. it was very disorienting. this plane should have slid off in the water. what should people know if it ends up in a water situation. >> water situation could be difficult but hopefully the plane will float. usually that's what happens when you hit the water gently that would be the time to get out. planes floated and passengers went out on the wing. you have to do whatever you can to get your head above water and head toward higher ground and get out of the plane. >> when they taught us you want to have your reference points have a good situation ago awareness of what's around you

how many seats to the exit know the ways out. once you are upside down in the water once you are in there people will be panicking. you need to know what to do. there are some things you can keep yourself settled to stamen tally in command if you end up in this kind of situations. >> one of the things i do with people is help them calm down. there's an exercise called 5, 4, 3, 2 1. play a game with yourself to stop thinking about the problem that is keeping the anxiety hormones flowing. think of things that are totally innocuous. you find a point straight ahead use your peripheral vision and make statements five statements to start with about what you see in your per river rale vision. i see a pen. i see a cell phone. then you switch to things you hear. five things. things that you touch like i feel my foot on the floor i feel something on my ear, like
