8:44 am
that point. late yesterday we were searching out on the surface and responding to reports of debris washing up on the north side of the bay. and we had access on that side responding to any responses or calls of debris or human remains washing up on the side. we were gathering those and bringing them back to my location where i had a staging area operation setup to handle that kind of stuff. at approximately 9 a.m. yesterday late morning i will say we did have a hit from sonar on what we thought was the air craft in the middle of the bay. we immediately sent divers out there to get eyes on the target to confirm it was the helicopter. we sent a diver down with a snorkel and he could see that that was the helicopter from the depths of 25 feet. the game plan was to do a side
8:45 am
scan sonar mapping of the bottom of the bay so we could see what was going on and develop the dive plan from that. that is about an hour to do. once we got the scan we looked and confirmed here is the helicopter, it is broken into several pieces and we determined what we would do what teams were assembled and who would do what. at approximately -- let me get the time straight here. about 2 o'clock in the afternoon the search and recovery -- sorry, search and rescue was still ongoing and that is when we put the divers into the water to start retrieving the air crew. operations continued until about 1800 last night as you saw yesterday the fog rolled in yesterday afternoon hampering operations on the water. the water conditions turned to almost zero visibility under water. so the crews down there were struggling to do what they had
8:46 am
to do. so at approximately 1830 last night we had to stop operations because of the conditions out there in the water. we did maintain a presence out here last night for any reports and i appreciate the media putting out telephone numbers. we received no calls last night of any debris washing up anywhere and that is a good thing. right now we are as the colonel stated a recovery stage. the coast guard has contacted a salvage unit out of mobile. i don't know the name of the agency. but we expect them to come on site late afternoon/early evening. as you can see with the conditions and we have weather coming in later on they are probably not going to start any operations tonight. i don't know what the weather is tomorrow but i believe we have more weather tomorrow and it may hamper the beginning of their

national guard soldiers and the seven marines on board all combat veterans. the air crew would have flown in very difficult combat situations in afghanistan. and yet a training accident apparently over the waters of the gulf takes everyone's lives. it is so sad. and the search continues. >> we will keep you updated as we hear more on that. we will switch gears here a little. lots of folks or really just everyone is looking for the fountain of youth. there could be a pill for that. researchers say they found a new class of drugs that could reduce aging and they have seen it in mouse. it removes a cell in the body that is responsible for aging and maybe it could help us. we have the senior author of the study here. how does this new drug work
8:49 am
exactly? >> what it does is it as you were mentioning it targets cells that we call senescent cells and they accumulate in tissues with aging and at sites of age related chronic diseases and produce cells that damage the other cells around them. we found if you clear them by putting a gene into mice the mice are heathier. so we were able to come up with a drug that acts in the same manner as that kind of gene and kills the cells. >> doctor i was hearing you speak about this and one thing that really resinated with me is you say you treat people who are elderly paying 36 rounds of golf and other people that have a laundry list of problems and you thought this drug could perhaps in one pill help someone with a laundry list of other ailments. how so? >> well we know that aging is
8:50 am
the biggest risk factor for most of the chronic diseases that account for the bulk of illness in society and the bulk of people who have to go into hospital and to die. and so we recognized for some time that aging dwarfs the other risk factors but we have not been able to target the aging process and the notion is if we can target them maybe we can delay the diseases. if we cured all cancer you would have more to life expectancy but you would die of heart disease or alzheimer's. so we are trying to hopefully delay all of the diseases as a group. that is the hope of the aging biology field. >> this is interesting to talk about what is happening inside the body verses just visually.
