>> less than zero. >> that's it for this week's show. thanks to my panel and for all of you watching. i'm paul gigot. we hope to see you here next week. time now for "sunday housecall." >> joining us, as always, is dr. marc siegel, author of "the inner pulse." >> and dr. david samadi, chairman and professor of urology. good to see you both, docs. >> good to see you. >> we begin with a tragic story in new york. a beloved and very well respected television reporter suddenly dying of a brain aneurysm while on assignment.
12:31 pm
she was riding in the news van returning from reporting a story. dr. siegel, this really hits me at home because my mother was the same age, 49 years old, an actress on a cbs soap opera. she woke up with a headache and died three days later of a brain aneurysm. what are they and are they hereditary and what do we know about them? >> i'm sorry to know that. they are more common that people think. 1 out of 50 people in the united states have brain aneurysms and most don't know about it because you don't know until something goes wrong. sometimes you get a warning but most of the time you don't get a warning before the aneurysm bursts. and i aliken it to a tire. you get a brand-new set of tires on your car, it looks perfect but there could be a tire -- because arteries are under pressure -- there could be a

tire with a weak spot. it starts to balloon out and, bam, you get a flat or you get a blowout. i brought a model of the breain. this is very, very tiny. they like or burst and then you get a bleed. worst headache of your life is what you usually say. i don't know if she said that but it's the worst headache of your life, nausea, stiff neck. we can save you about 50% of the time. but two-thirds of those people end up with permanent deficits. the sooner the better. if you have a family history, you need to get checked. >> i was told it's not hereditary? is that true? >> it's not all hereditary and anyone who has a first-degree family member should be checked. and david will tell you about the risk factors but high blood pressure is certainly a problem with it. >> and is there any way, when you're dealing with these, to have any symptoms to know that
12:33 pm
it could be coming on. the fame writer wrote a book saying, i want to thank my brain for remembering me and he had surgery in arizona about that. >> he was one of the few lucky ones that had some symptoms, a headache. you may have a headache a week or two before it happens, nausea, or a stiff neck. most of the time it's no symptoms. but if you smoke or you're a drug user, high blood pressure, you need to get scanned. the best way is to look at the blood vessels but in the emergency room, we do a c.a.t. scan. certainly everyone with a family member ought to have an mri. >> dr. samadi, is there any way to prevent this? >> well, that's the problem. i think all of them are asymptomatic. there are no symptoms. if you have blurry vision, if you have severe headaches, stiff necks, changes neurologically,
12:34 pm
you may want to consider getting a c.a.t. scan or mri. certainly knowing risk factors are important. female more than men is a risk factor. smoking and high blood pressure. when you have high blood pressure, it pushes that and can rupture the aneurysm. we see about 6 million people in the country but only 30,000 ruptures. half of them end up dying and the other half that actually stay, half of those end up having a lot of complications and issues. if you're not a smoker or if you're smoking, stop smoking. family history and genetics plays a big role. women in their 30s and 40s may have this issue and once you recognize it, if it's about 10 millimeters or less, we may want to observe it and get more c.a.t. scans or -- >> what do you mean? 10 centimeters. >> if the size of the aneurysm is between 5 and 10 centimeters, you may observe it and not go through surgeries.
12:35 pm
a lot of time what happens is through intervention, radiologists can put a clip over the aneurysm and block it from the rupture. the problem with aneurysm is, if you look at this brain, if i can borrow this for a men, around this brain, there's a scar. so there's no room for any kind of bleeding. once you have a rupture of the aneurysm from the circumstance kill of willis, what we call the cerebral artery, once you have that rupture, there's nowhere that it can go. that pushes the organ in the brain and she unfortunately went unconscious on friday. i'm so sorry about your mom, she's obviously leaving two sons behind and it's a tragedy. how do you recognize it? you don't. >> i have a follow-up question because you mentioned the size of the clot. two questions. first, obviously it's only doctors who would be able to rec
12:36 pm
f recognize that and detect that. what if off problem with circulation? does that play into it at all? >> that's a good point. usually if there are some elastic issues with the arteries or vascular problems or trauma, sometimes you may end with an aneurism. typically lower extremities are not a risk factor. you have to pay attention to stiff neck, double vision, severe headache and get the c.a.t. scan. the sooner we can find it, the better we can treat it. >> you said sometimes -- my mom, just boom. there's no symptom apparently with lisa, sitting in a live van coming back from the story, talking and suddenly something ruptures. >> because there's a weakening that you don't know about. the tiny ones that david was
12:37 pm
talking about is the size of the end of a pen and the bigger size is the size of a quarter. by the way, you can develop aneurysms from infections in the brain or trauma. if you're in a car accident, you can get one. i'm not trying to scare anyone but this is the number one reason that people come to my office and say, i have a headache, do i need to worry about this? it's the worst headache of your life. that's how it is described. >> i would tell your daughter, for example, if you have a family history and there's a real risk factory, go ahead and get a c.a.t. scan. >> no matter your age? >> i would. >> i agree. >> and our thoughts and prayers certainly are with lisa's family and her colleagues here in new york. >> for certain. and i'm sorry about your mom as well. >> thank you. spring is in the air and so is allergy season. next, why this year is expected to be worse than previous years and what you can do about it. e e to be worse than ooe

>> what these beats are is basically electricity comes from the brain to the upper part of the heart, it tharnger charges it. then it goes down and charges the lower part of the heart, the muscle, and bam the blood goes out to the body. the heart is a pump and it's triggered by the brain. if you get a charge in the upper heart, you get a skipped beat and then the next one is harder. that's what you feel is a palpitation. in her case, and i don't want to diagnose her over the television. but it sounds like it's high blood pressure leading her heart to be thick. aic thissened heart from high blood pressure leads to these extra beats. they are benign, nothing to worry about, but the high blood pressure is something to worry about. you can get these from stress, you can get this from coffee, you can get it from alcohol. in the vast majority of the cases it's completely benign. however, sometimes it can lead to a worse arit reia, something called atrial fibrillation where the heart is quivering, that's a
