the french alps. many questions remain about the plane's dissent and even the safety of the aircraft before it took off. >> doug luzader who is a licensed pilot joins us live from washington. we have a lot of questions for you. let's begin with this. what does the 8 minute dissent tell us about what was happening in the plane? >> i think that is the real mystery here. by some indication it was back pa canned twh is it hit -- when it hit the ground. it gave some idea what was happening on board the aircraft. the first priority would be dealing with any kind of in air emergency. part of the process the pilots go through beyond aviating and navigating is communicating. it's the third step in the process. you would think they would have had time at some point which leads to questions of what it was like if it was incapacitated. the fact that they located the cockpit voice recorder is significant because it would give us an indication of whether there was communication between

the pilot and co pilot which may give us an idea of what kind of issues they were encountering. >> speaking of communication there was not a distress call. they didn't call any one in air traffic control. what could have been happening at that time doug? >> that's the whole nut of this mystery. if they had 8 minutes on the way down why wasn't a call made. it may have been they were incapacitated or overwhelmed with one or perhaps another emergency. the critical step in dealing with the emergency aviate, navigate, communicate. the first thing you do in an emergency is make sure you have control of the aircraft figure out where you were and communicate. 8 minutes is a long period of time with a distress call. >> it didn't attempt to change course either as we can tell at this point and went straight into the mountain. why was the plane allowed back
