pilot out of the cockpit and crashed the plane killing all 150 souls on board. plus, a deadly outbreak of storms in the plains and spawns twisters. now twisting through the devastation. >> it is wasting all of these resources for really nothing. >> police say a california woman's abduction was a hoax. will she and her boyfriend face charges? it is all happening now. >> we begin with startling kwep developments. the french prosecutor said the co-pilot deliberately killed 150 people. and welcome to "happening now". i am jon scott. >> and i am jenna lee.
10:02 am
there are questions about air safety. on the voice recorder the lead pilot could be heard banging on the cockpit door locked out and unable to get back in and terrified screams of helpless passengers that were about to die. attention turning to the background of the co-pilot and why he chose to commit mass murders as investigators tell us. here is the latest for us now. jon what do we know about the co-pilot? >> reporter: jenna, we are learning more about his flight history behind the controls and we are also learning more about his background, his personal history. jenna we don't know the pressing and puzzling question at this point why he apparently did what he did. andreas lubitz was a german citizen and had 600 hours of flight experience on board the
10:03 am
air bus a 320. he trained in the flight school in germany and lived with his parents in germany and had a flat in dusseldorf which was the flight destination after taking off from barcelona. there was nothing to suggest anything unusual about his background. no red flags and prosecutors don't believe it was an act of terrorism and they don't believe that lubitz was connected to a terrorist organization. >> in the beginning stage as you rightly point out. what do we know about the final minutes before the flight crashed? >> reporter: as you talked about in the intro disturk new details. the pilot had left the cockpit most likely to use the bathroom and at that point, lubitz was alone inside. when he tried to get back in.
10:04 am
when the pilot tried to get back in. the door was locked. lubitz was alone nside. and he was breathing calmly inside of the cabin according to what was heard on the cockpit voice recorder. you could hear the screaming when the pilot continues to knock on the cockpit door and he pushes and hits it. and then you hear what is apparently screaming from the terrified passengers. >> the alarms were activated to alert the aircraft of the ground. we hear strong silent knocks to force the door open. so at this point, a criminal investigators for lubitz's home, trying to find anything in his background anything in that home that can give an idea and can answer that pressing and

puzzling question why did he apparently do what he did? jenna? >> so heart breaking for the families, some are gathering as close as they can to the crash site. thank you very much. >> we'll bring in john, president of four winds consulting and a airline captain and a former airline accident investigator. every since 9/11, john we have worked hard to armor the cockpit doors and prevent the guys from the cockpit. but an event like this show that the bad guys find a way around the best defenses. >> this is a hard situation to guard against. the whole system of security and safety is designed to keep the bad guys out of the cockpit, from outside of the cockpit. one question that i think is very important to ask is that
10:06 am
the procedures for the lufthansa were they ever in place to demand another crew member was in the cockpit and so there was not just one in the cockpit. that is normal procedure in the carriers and in the united states. and raises the question, should we ever have a cockpit that is only flown by one person. in the united states it is law and faa regulation you never have one pilot alone. there is always a pilot or flight attendant in those cockpits on flights originating or heading to the united states. lufthansa would have to abide by that if they were heading in the united states. what about the mental screening. everybody is shaking their heads and how can a guy who is
10:07 am
a sociopath and no regard to human beings. how can he put on a co-pilot uniform? >> that is a good question. unfortunately when you ask the mental health association to play in the sand box they will have to it live up to the same quality insurance metrics and self critical reporting. and i think that is going to be an area where the journalist community will have a field day with. it is going to be very hard for the mental health community to play with the same exacting standards as we see in aviation. if you make a decision on pulling somebody from the cockpit because they were not mentally qualified. who makes that decision. and how are they qualified to make that decision and how can you be sure that is the right decision. we have that in place for manufacturing and safety procedures. and human factors, but those
10:08 am
standards haven't necessarily been applied to the mental health community. this is going to bust this area of investigation wide open i think. i know there is a pilot shortage underway worldwide. does a guy like this sort of get in through the cracks because the airlines need pilots? >> well there's been in the last 20 years, and i have been a professional airline pilot. we have seen the profession go from desirable to being a career where people have and seen losses in pay and seen retirements wiped out through bankruptcy and a lot of the pilots who are raising children and growing up are not recommending it as a career. we do have a problem getting pilots now. and this is not going to help the situation. i think we are going to have to
10:09 am
take a real hard look at how much we are paying and training and investing in pilot safety as we move on in the future. this is going to it start affecting us in the world in 5 or 10 years. >> and perhaps how much we are screening pilots and are they ever to be left alone in the cockpit. thank you john. >> the co-pilot has a connection to the united states. we are learning that he partly trained in a flight school in phoenix in 2008. we have more on the ground and live report coming up. we want to hear from you as well. this was described as a deliberate crash. should a pilot of only 600 hours allow to fly solo in the cockpit? here in the united states we have different requirements as far as who is solo or not in the
