stolen valor. we will talk to a congressman from one state about why he wants to toughen up the punishment for people who lie about serving in the military. we begin with breaking developments in los angeles. firefighters there say nearly two dozen people have been injured when a commuter train struck two cars. that train partially derailing. we are told at least two cars went right off the tracks. firefighters say one person who was in the vehicle involved in the collision was critically injured. crews had to cut him or her out of the wreckage. it happened just before 11:00 a.m. local time near the university of southern california campus, usc which is south of downtown l.a. we will bring in new details as soon as they come in. meanwhile we go to yemen where it is on the verge of civil war there. now a senior defense official saying the u.s. will likely send

even more aid for saudi air strikes against iran backed rebels. saudi arabia leading the fight as other middle east countries join in. meantime yemen's leader and the rebels who forced him out of the country are accused -- each accusing each other of being the puppet of a bigger power. really, the big conundrum over there bringing in conner powell, live in our mideast bureau with the details. >> reporter: well this is growing trouble in yemen. already the saudis leaders are saying they will continue to intervene in yemen until stability is restored. when and how that will happen is not yet clear but one thing is certain. the saudi arabian government and military will continue intervening in yemen for the foreseeable future and the u.s. military now saying they are going to step up their support for the saudi involvement in yemen. there is no real talk of ground
1:03 pm
troops or an invasion or anything like that, but u.s. military say they are going to continue to provide intelligence and logistics support, also probably provide some type of aerial refuel for saudi jets as they continue to launch air strikes in yemen. now, for the third day in a row saudi planes have continued to target houthi rebels iranian backed houthi rebels in yemen, particularly in the southern part of the country near aden, where just in the last few days, u.n. diplomats and other international diplomats have been forced to leave that city as houthi rebels get closer and closer to that southern port city. just a few days ago the internationally recognized yemeni president hadi fled. he appeared today in egypt where he spoke to the arab league summit, telling the sunni leaders there that they need to support the military intervention in yemen to drive these houthi rebels out. he called iran the puppet master

everyone remember him. all of this as officials claim the 27-year-old co-pilot hid information about his medical treatment from the airline. we have the latest from dusseldorf germany where investigators are still combing through the co-pilot's apartment for clues. >> reporter: absolutely. yeah just a couple blocks from where we are right now, a team of 200 investigators have been sifting through the evidence coming out of the house of andreas lubitz, trying to figure out why he did what he did. the latest reports today are that he might have had some sort of vision problem that he might have thought and might have feared would have prevented him from continuing to fly. it might have driven him to the apparent mass murder on that mountainside in the southern french alps. there is some speculation that recent visits to a hospital near here were to deal with that. the hospital denied, there was

1:09 pm
know this can happen people, psychopaths, whatever, can conceal these problems. they are very skilled at doing that. and this guy somehow managed to do it. >> doctor as you know now investigators have discovered the note the doctor's note that this co-pilot had saying that he is quote, not fit to work. of course there is the doctor/patient confidentiality clause in all of those types of relationships. i'm guessing that his doctor would have known what this guy did for a living, but the doctor's hands are tied, right? they can't really report to the aviation authorities that there is some concern? >> well, i'm not an expert on german law but i understand if a health care practitioner particularly a psychiatrist, feels a person is a threat to themselves or to others, they do have the permission, they can break the confidentiality clause and report it. but boy if it doesn't happen, then they've got to explain to
1:10 pm
their fellow psychiatrists or psychologists why they did it. that's sort of a tough thing for a medical practitioner to make. now, it sounds like the girlfriend knew more about this than perhaps the physicians did. >> it's definitely a tough call for a medical practitioner to make, as you say. also, it brings to mind the question of what should aviation authorities do to change the culture, the work environment to prevent something like this from happening, making it safer for someone to report, if you will confidentially some concerns if they notice irrational behavior or warning signs on the part of a co-worker. >> well, in this country, we have already done that. they can actually report mild forms of depression on their medical form and they won't automatically be grounded. they could even take mild forms of antidepressant medications and that changed in recent years, but there's another line of defense out there that we may have to revisit.
1:11 pm
it's the type of training called crew resource management or crm. originally it was designed to prevent accidents. it empowered everybody. flight attendants, dispatchers, other pilots, any time they saw another pilot doing what they thought was a mistake, they had immunity and were actually encouraged to report that. now that was primarily an accident prevention program but perhaps we need to revisit this training and include behavioral disorders also because clearly the people that are in the cockpit are probably the ones that have had a chance to watch him closest for the longest period of time. >> quickly 20 seconds if you could what does this do for the psyche of the good pilots out there? >> well, obviously it's very insulting and we do need to realize this is an extremely rare event. you are more likely to die from an infected bee sting than a demented pilot taking you down. >> thank you very much for your perspective. >> thank you.
