time now for "sunday house cal call". >> welcome as always. joining us dr. siegel. and author of the inner pulse unlocking the inner code of sickness and health. >> and chairman and professor of yo ewe olgs and. >> major advances in cancer research. the utah researchers announced a new treatment for mel know many which they say works by
9:31 am
injecting viruses. >> this is exciting. we've been talking about viruses to kill cancer for about 100 years now but now they're starting to make headway. fighting cancers is like a war but we're getting to the point where we have guided missiles and they go into the cancer cells and the biggest problem was to teach the body that these cancer cells are foreign because before cancer hid in the body and melanoma is not being attacked by the immune system. they're taking a cold sore virus and getting it to get picked up by the melanoma cell. once it's inside the cell, then the immune system sees it and says there's that virus an invader and comes marching in with what's called t cells to destroy the melanoma. you have the various killing the cancer and then the immune system killing it. it's still early. it's only been tried in a hand full of patients.
9:32 am
25% had complete cures. >> you see so many of these commercials were creams that cure dark spots. how do you know if a dark spot is cancerous or not? >> that's a good point and we talked about that before but you look for irregular borders and uneven color. you look for something large and look for something raised but sometimes you don't see all of these things. unusual color and borders and irregular size. if you have a question, get your doctor to see it. >> this reminds me of injecting a virus. did you see the one about polio? is this a new frontier of medicine that can happen right now? >> you took words out of my nout. we are entering a whole new era of cancer therapy. we talked about the university of pennsylvania looking at listeria which is a bacteria to
9:33 am
fight breast cancer. now we're talking about in rue rolling with bladder cancer using the type of tu bur cue lo sis to fight bladder cancer. who would ever imagine taking a herpes virus and sort of modified ja netically and go after this kind of things. these are using our own immune system against cancer which is something that's extremely important. the company has invested a lot of scientific data for melanoma and prostate and breast cancer. we're taking the cells from the cancer, we modify them and put them back in the system and now they're going to go after the cells. our immune system with fight the cancer and in this case, 74,000 cases of melanoma. this is a huge step forward. >> it's like your customizing
9:34 am
the treatment for each patient. >> that's exactly right. what is this going to do? chemo therapy, what we're doing is surgery followed by chemo therapy. it has a lot of side effects. it affects good cells. now we're targeting only the good cells. >> can you do this right now? co can you go get something now? >> they're in clinical trials. one key point david mentioned that i want to emphasize is they're engineering the virus so it doesn't kill normal cells. it's only cancer cells. it thrives in the cancer cells. the side effects are very, very low because of that. simultaneously there's a cancer vaccine coming out in washington university in st. louis where they look for the proteins on the cancer cell and they find them genetically and they build
9:35 am
an immune vaccine that flags the cancer cells. >> this is very important because for the last two decades cancer celled outsmarted us and protected themselves by building the wall around them so the immune system is not going to be able to find them. these t cells that are part of the immune system are the missiles that mark is talking about. now we're putting a flag on those cancer cells saying this is the place where you want to kill and the immune system goes after this. now, glee owe blas toe ma, that's revolutionary. that's a huge deal. i called the surgeons at cornell and i said is it the real deal and they're for it. in the patient who died, one patient who died, they gave too much load of the virus and the virus took over the patient. and that's a problem. >> the same thing at duke about the polio virus. this is the real deal. here's the key. it's that these are incurable
9:36 am
cancers. cancers where people were dying within the next year or two now have hope. now there's a possibility of a cure, because these viruses go after distant cells all around the body and the immune system seeks out the cancer and finds out. >> how soon will that -- >> within the next couple of years. going back to what you've spoken about. as a medical doctor as to how to boost your immune system. everything we speak about, mediterranean diet, what food to eat and what not to eat is all good to keep yourself healthy. >> hopefully will will be out in a couple of years for people to take advantage of. >> a new warning about a common household item after research finds that exposure to bleach could put children at risk for infections and respiratory infections.
9:37 am
dr. samadi -- let's start it on now. >> this is a study that came from europe. they're basically kids from ages six to twelve, they look at 9,000 of them and saw that the households that use a lot of bleach, the kids have higher risk of allergies and a lot of respiratory illness. i'm not worried about this because i think the study is terrible. the way it's done, the way it was designed, the questionnaires are all completely -- this is the first time on national tv i would say this is completely garbage. now, what we learn from this is either using a lot of bleach can wipe out all the bacterias so you're not exposed to those bad bacterias to boost your immune system or it can cause respiratory illnesses. i think if you have a pregnant woman at home, don't use it. you're not exposing the kids directly. it's just a terrible study. >> some people use bleach to
9:38 am
clean their sheets, wipe down counter tops. is that the sort of use we're talking about? >> i agree with david and i'm glad we're separating out studies because later in the show we'll talk about a well done study. i don't think this is proof. the only thing i like about it is probably bleach in a certain percentage of kids is going to cause a respiratory response. it's going to induce asthma, something but the fact that it's going to increase infections somehow, that's definitely not been proven. i'll tell you where this is coming from. we're using bleach in the hospitals to kill super bugs, and we need it. we need it. >> you hear about people getting infections from hospital. >> and now the super entug going into the schools. if you don't use it in the schools, you get a super bug. we need the bleach much more than 'need to worry about the
9:39 am
rare case of a child getting a respiratory infection. before we get into a response of hey, we need to know bleach works. >> that's true. you're talking about overuse of obje antibiotics in hospitals. you need good bacterias. this is all about family and households that use bleach, just observational study. they saw the kids may have more ear infections and other things. i don't think it's cause and effect. i wouldn't worry about it. >> i use bleach. >> and your kids are fine. >> you know it's easter sunday and maybe eggs are on your menu today but how much of this holiday treat is too much. new rules on cholesterol and eggs. the doctors will fill us in on all that on how many eggs we can eat when we come back. sunday dinners at my house...
9:40 am
it's a full day for me, and i love it. but when i started having back pain, my sister had to come help. i don't like asking for help. i took tylenol but i had to take six pills to get through the day. so my daughter brought over some aleve. it's just two pills, all day! and now, i'm back! aleve. two pills. all day strong, all day long. and for a good night's rest, try aleve pm for a better am. excellent looking below the surface, researching a hunch... and making a decision you are type e*. time for a change of menu. research and invest from any website. with e*trade's browser trading. test test test
9:41 am
the real question that needs to be asked is "what is it that we can do that is impactful?" what the cloud enables is computing to empower cancer researchers. it used to take two weeks to sequence and analyze a genome; with the microsoft cloud we can analyze 100 per day. whatever i can do to help compute a cure for cancer, that's what i'd like to do.
9:42 am
then my rheumatologist prescribed enbrel. with psoriatic arthritis, i had intense joint pain that got worse and worse. i'm phil mickelson, pro golfer. enbrel helps relieve pain and stop joint damage. i've been on the course and on the road. enbrel may lower your ability to fight infections. serious, sometimes fatal events including infections, tuberculosis, lymphoma, other cancers, nervous system and blood disorders, and allergic reactions have occurred. before starting enbrel, your doctor should test you for tuberculosis and discuss whether you've been to a region where certain fungal infections are common. you should not start enbrel if you have an infection like the flu. tell your doctor if you're prone to infections, have cuts or sores, have had hepatitis b, have been treated for heart failure, or if you have symptoms such as persistent fever, bruising, bleeding, or paleness. enbrel helped relieve my joint pain. but the best part of every journey... dad!!! ...is coming home. ask if enbrel, the number one biologic medicine prescribed by rheumatologists,
9:43 am
can help you stop joint damage. we're back now. we were told not to eat too many eggs because of cholesterol but recently researchers clarified their stance saying it might be as bad as we recently thought. does that mean you can eat all the easter eggs you want? what about eggs and cholesterol? >> eggs very important today because they represent birth and rebirth and that's why they're a symbol for easter and pass yoov. the issue is cholesterol. supposedly we can have about 300 milligrams of cholesterol a day without any problem whatsoever. what i want people to know is if you get it in your food, you're
9:44 am
not going to make as much in your own body. you're going to stop producing it in your liver. you can probably have a couple of eggs and your cholesterol is not going to go up. they're loaded with vitamin d. yolks are good energy source. the only people i want to watch out for eggs are diabetics. there's evidence that with diabetes and there's studies on this, if you eat too many eggs your risk of haeart disease goe up. >> the american heart association is very clear about this. we say cholesterol is not good for you and then we come back and say it's perfect for you. that's where the confusion is. you need to have cholesterol in order to make your hormones. six hormones, court zol. all of that is a priority. cholesterol is special for you. what the american heart institution wants you to know is
9:45 am
there's a difference between good and bad cholesterols. salmon, nuts, all of those are good ones. stay away from saturated fats and transfats, processed meats. those are bad. they are still reminding you that good exercise, healthy diet is all part of this. unlike the old fashioned way where we said if you have cholesterol you're going to die, we think it's the bad cholesterol. >> how many eggs can i eat a week? >> it depends. >> i agree we can get our cholesterol in better places and there are much healthier foods an eggs but the thing here is that you can eat some eggs and it isn't has dangerous as we thought. the key is that it may not end up in your blood cholesterol. it may not increase your bad
9:46 am
cholesterol in the blood. i say a few eggs a week. i think an egg a day is too much. >> i think you should talk to a doctor about your genetic component. i may have a genetic component and take the same amount and have a heart attack. individualized care. >> that's great to have that information. it's new. >> it is question etic. it is. >> i'm so happy that dr. mark pointed out the correlation between eggs and easter sunday. people always ask how they're linked. >> thank you. >> also egg whites but i guess that's not -- >> i know you love eggs, eric. >> still to come we'll answer an e-mail question from one viewer who was recently diagnosed with
9:47 am
9:50 am
. time now for "should i worry," it's our weekly segment for everything that gives us concern. one viewer wrote, i have been diagnosed with per nishs anemia. i was told that my stomach lining is very thin. what can i do to prevent serious complications? >> i love this topic. anemia is something you cannot ignore. you need something called intrinsic factor in the stomach
9:51 am
to combine with b12 so when they go in the bowels they would get absorbed. what causes this problem? if there is some immune disease in the family, type 1 diabetes, thyroid problems, you may have this kind of intrinsic factor. if you have krohn's, you may have the problem. a lot of people are taking xanax or tums, et cetera. >> zantac. >> zantac, so a lot of meat that has b12. when you have vitamin b12 deficiency, you're tired, you're fatigued, you may be depressed. i know mark probably treats this in the office with antibiotics. >> can you take a b12 supplement over the counter? >> first of all, we have to find out if you have it. you come to the doctor's office
9:52 am
and we test you for it. we have to differentiate between this, perniciou srs anemia, and there are shots for it. someone who has a mild case, they're taking prevacid or something, changing the lining of the stomach, many things can cause this. some of these people with get away with putting it underneath their tongue. i will tell you today that i have a lot of patients, and this is only over the last two years, eric. this is incredible. over the last two years, you can go to your pharmacist, get a b-12 pill, 1,000 micro grams or 2000 micrograms and put it under your tongue. but you have to make sure your level is back in the normal range. don't do it yourself. even though it's not prescription, don't do it yourself. >> i found out about vitamin
9:53 am
b-12 deficiency, especially in the elderly is identical to alzheimer's. if you have a family member who is kind of losing where their keys are, check vitamin b-12. in women, some b-12 vitamin deficiency can change to a positive pap smear. if you have a pap smear, talk to your doctor, find out about vitamin b-12. and sometimes having vitamin b-12 can increase the risk of gastric cancer and they should have more screening. >> will you put that on your facebook? >> i will put it on facebook. >> i'm serious, because i will repost that. >> most of my patients who have this problem, the number one problem is fatigue. people who come to me for fatigue, it's on the top of my list, especially with elderly people. and if they're not thinking clearly, again, that issue that david was mentioning about cognition, about clear decision making, about whether you can
9:54 am
come to a judgment on something, and depression and anxiety, these issues can be related to b-12. i can test you for a b-12 deficiency. the most important is it increases fatigue. >> there's something mark does also in the office. there's a test for it. >> i can test for the reason for it. well, there is a fascist capital standing up on anorexia. the reaction and how we can deal with it.
9:55 am
people ship all kinds of things. but what if that thing is a few hundred thousand doses of flu vaccine. that need to be kept at 41 degrees. while being shipped to a country where it's 90 degrees. in the shade. sound hard? yeah. does that mean people in laos shouldn't get their vaccine? we didn't think so. from figuring it out to getting it done, we're here to help.
9:58 am
forget about it. tylenol was ok, but it was 6 pills a day. but aleve is just 2 pills all day. and now, i'm back! aleve. there's new life being shed on anorexia as feds just passed a law banning those models who are considered too thin. israel and spain already has such laws. it's painful when anyone suffers from anorexia. >> 24 million people in this country suffer from eating disorders, anorexia where you starve yourself or purging where you binge eat.
9:59 am
france is kind of targeting this reason, though i'm not in favor of banning anybody, of course, but the issue are our teens. it's the third most common disease among teens in this country. seen if you're out there saying, why is dr. siegel talking about anorexia when last week he was talking about me gaining too much weight? the problems are connected because your child is looking at the fashion model saying, i've got to be ultra thin like this model. then they get worried about it and don't accept their own weight and that's not healthy. >> how thin is too thin, dr. somadi? >> less than 18.5 body fat is what the cutoff is, and employers are saying, if you hire them, there will be penalties and jail time. what they should be telling children is, this is not healthy. there is a lot of pressure to get the job. anorexia is a real disease, we have treatment for it, and you should learn about this and educate yourself.
10:00 am
this is the highest death rate among teenagers. these are eating disorders. we should educate our children. go on line. we'll put more information about body mass index. >> well said. thank you so much. that's it for us. thanks for joining us. happy easter and welcome to america's news headquarters in washington. i'm shannon bream. here's what's making headlines right now. >> it was a better candidacy than i ever thought it was going to be. i think it can be a very serviceable, practical agreement. >> there is a lot of water that needs to go under the bridge here. many, many details are unknown at this point. and, of course, the devil is in the details as leaders from both sides of the aisle weigh in on the nuclear framework we've got now with iran. even the pope is putting in his two cents. but can we really truly verify iran is not progressing towards
