media buzz. we're back here next week at 11:00 with the latest buzz. refugees fleeing for their lives in the middle east. now a major search and rescue operation is underway. after their boat carrying as many as 700 migrants from libya capsized overnight in what could be the mediterranean yan's deadliest known migrant disaster. welcome to america's news head quarters. >> the italian coast guard has pulled only 28 survivors from the water so far. 24 bodies have been recovered but the number of victims is expected to rise dramatically into the hundreds as the search efforts continue.
9:01 am
connor powell live from our mideast bureau with the latest. >> reporter: every year hundreds of thousands of refugees try to make this journey to europe, but it is a dangerous journey with thousands dying every single year. now, the italian coast guard is still labeling this a search and rescue operation but increasingly they are just pulling bodies out of the water. two dozen are confirmed dead and the number is expected to increase with some 700 people on the boat. the boat appears to be cop sized 65 miles off the coast of libya. 120 miles south of italy. it was packed full of people and apparently cop sized when the refugees rushed to one size of a boat to draw attention of a passing ship. this is a particularly dangerous time of year. the number of migrants trying to make this journey to europe increases with the warmer weather but a lot of the boats that are being used for this
9:02 am
journey are old and poorly maintained and overcrowded. combined with the number of people trying to make this journey it is a dangerous time of year anded aing to the problem, the number of refugees trying to make this cross this year as opposed to last year is up substantially. it's of the war in the middle east and the ongoing violence in north africa as well. the numbers of people searching for a better life in europe are up very high this year. that adds to the problem. >> connor powell, thank you very much for the latest there from the mideast bureau. as he mentioned the number of people attempting to cross in libya swells in the spring when the weather um improves. the mediterranean has become known as the most dangerous rout used by ref juugeesrefugees.

3500 people last year lost their lives trying to leave. so far so. >> back here at home it is a somber and reflective day in oklahoma city. hundreds of survivors, family members and others gathering for the 20th remembrance ceremony at the oklahoma city national memorial and museum. they're marking the deadly terrorist attack that tragically killed 168 people when the bomb exploded in front of the federal building on this day two decades ago. will car joins us with the latest. >> reporter: 20 years ago this explosion rocked not only oklahoma city but also the country. just after 9:00 a.m. on april 19th, 1995, a ryder truck that was filled with more than two tons of explosives blew up
9:04 am
gutting the federal building. the carnage, unforgettable. 168 people were killed including 19 children. it took rescuers six weeks to recover all the bodies. 680 others were injured. less than two hours after the explosion they arrested a gulf war vet who hated the veteran. he planted bomb. he was executed for the crimes. his accomplice is serving consecutive life sentences. this morning at the exact same time as the bomb went off two decades ago, a ceremony was held to remember the victims. many family members got up, and they choked up as they read the namings ofes of those who died that day. >> may this memorial offer comfort, strength peace and sa renty. >> an emotional ceremony today.
9:05 am
we heard from survivors and family members and president bill clinton who was in office when this attack occurred. five years after it happened the oklahoma city memorial opened and it's impressive. it just went through an enhancement project. i was there a couple of years ago. there are 168 chairs on the outside of the memorial. one for every victim. there is also the gallery of honor inside the memorial. you go in and it gives you goose bumps. they have pictures of every single victim. you see the faces of the children and it's hard to not get emotional. you get a great understanding of the sense of loss that they had two decades ago. >> it is a beautiful and stirring memorial. thanks so much and hard to believe that it's been 20 years already. thank you. >> well, isis is releasing another horrific execution video. this one shows the slaughter of
9:06 am
two different groups of ooet yoeb yan chis yans. this shows the group being held by isis affiliates. it switches between one group of cabtives being shot and the other group being beheaded on a beach. >> isis will with be at the top of the agenda next at camp david. leaders from six countries including including saudi arabia are expected to focus on the kwachaos in yemen and the nuclear agreement in iran. what will this accomplish? we have a fox news contributor with us. ambassador, you think of bagen,
9:07 am
jimmy carter back in 1978. what do you think this one will achieve? >> i think that's open to question. as you say, they're going to have a full agenda. isis a chaos the rise of the houthis. but the dominant issue will be iran and the deal that's still not quite yet a deal under discussion between the united states and others and iran. the gulf cooperation counsel members, the six oil producer monarchies are deeply concerned despite their bland public statements that the administration has shown. it's not prepared to stop iran from getting nuclear weapons. and it'll be very interesting to see what the administration tries to tell them. it's one thing for the white house to utter brandishments to the press in this country. it's quite another for the leaders of the countries right across the gulf from iran who face the reality of what a
9:08 am
nuclear iran will be. and i'm sure they're going to impress that point on the president. >> iran is being dedefiant. today they're saying they want the sanctions dropped immediately with the signing of the deal. now the president is saying he's telling john kerri to engage in creative diplomacy. what does that mean? is the president giving? >> sure. it means more surrenders. i think it boggles the mind that after all the concessions made in the last two years on top of all the other concessions that have been made over the full twelve years of negotiation with iran that there's still no bottom to the president's ability to compromise and surrender. and i'm sure that's an incentive to the iranians to keep up the negotiations and i'm sure it's just causing more heart burn both in israel and among the arab countries. their position is very similar to israel on this. they don't want iran to have nuclear weapons any more than
9:09 am
israel does and i think the saudis have an option on pakistani nuclear weapons and others are considering what they're going to do. i'm afraid we're already in a nuclear arms race in the middle east accelerated by these negotiations. >> they may want it too if they see traun get it. what concerns you most. >> i think they're going to begin the creative diplomacy that the president asked for which is to remove just about the last remaining piece of leverage we have. the whole point of requiring iranian compliance performance under the deal before the sanctions are lift second-degreeed is to try get them to do it. if you eliminate the leverage before they have to perform, it's one more reason they're going to violate this treaty from the get go. the president says that's not important. it's the snap back mechanism that he's concerned about. i think it may be within the
9:10 am
realm of human imagination to come up with a snap back mechanism. i've tried to think of what it might be based on my experience. i cannot. i think it's a delusion. the president better explained to congress and the american people soon if there's anything left of his sanctions policy at all. >> you talk about leverage. take a look at what investors daily is saying. everywhere you look the u.s. is losing. in iran we are eager and desperate to leave the worst terrorist regime in the world. we're falling all over ourselves to end sanctions terhan getting nothing in return. >> this paves the way for iran to get nuclear weapons. there are only two options here. one far and away the most likely is that iran getting nuclear weapons at a time of their
9:11 am
choosing. the other is that somebody certainly won't be the united states, maybe israel uses force to prevent that. sanctions and legislation will not succeed. i think people better get realistic about this. we can think we're acting but in fact, the iranians are on the march. >> good to see you. thank you for your insight. >> meanwhile in iraq the heart breaking humanitarian crisis caused by the islamic state is growing. the united nations reporting 90,000 people have fled their homes in western anbar province. they are displacing thousands of families. humanitarian groups are providing food, water, and shelter. and this weekend residents force to flee their homes as a wild fire burns out of control.

southern california is threatening 300 homes. the out of control flames can be seen from miles away and triggered a mandatory evacuation last night. one official says the fire has grown to at least 300 acres about a half mile of the residential area. firefighters are having trouble reaching the blaze. the cause is under investigation. a georgia police obtained a

u.s. veteran after she intervened in a protest where demonstrators were walking on an american flag. >> you can see the cell phone video capturing that scuffle that happened in georgia. brian fills us in on this. >> reporter: this all happened in georgia during a racially charged protest. the woman is a 14 -year veteran of the u.s. air force. when a friend posted this photo on her facebook wall on thursday, of protesters walking on the american flag, she says she repeatedly asked the university to stop them from disgracing the flag. so on friday, she took action. >> actually, it is.
9:17 am
any time it's been torn or ripped, we're going to take care of this. this belongs to actually, the entire united states. it's not yours. >> the flag was stripped and given back to the protesters causing this scuffle. listen to what the arresting police officer said as to why they arrested her. >> because when we told her to release it, she did not. >> you arrested her because she wouldn't release the flag to the people who had it on the ground. >> to me. to the officer who asked her to return it. >> she was released because the protesters and the officers declined to press charges. the university, though has issued a criminal trespass warning which bans her from stepping foot on campus. she tells me she'd do it all over again. >> in my heart and brain and soul, i can't find a definition for it. we do a lot of things nthd in the world. here in the united states, we do
9:18 am
a lot of things that are against our government but when it comes to the flag it's our symbol and stands for everything that we are and for the freedom to allow individuals to do what they want and protest. how do you walk upon something that's giving you the right to do what you're doing. >> a university released the statement in part reading from the president while i firmly disagree with the actions of the protesters, i understand their right to protest. now the school says they are expecting veteran's groups to protest and monday and they tell me they'll respect their right to do so. >> thanks so much. >> i have a programming note for you. tonight, make sure not the mess legends and lies the real west. a new series paying tribute to some of our american trail blazers. that is tonight at 8:00 p.m. eastern right here on the fox news channel. great series. >> and meanwhile, the president frustrated and lashing out over the stilled confirmation vote

>> frustration mounting in the white house over the stalled confirmation for the president's pick for attorney general. the nomination of loretta lynch has been suspended in congress for six months. that is a record. republicans have linked the vote to a human trafficking bill when which has also been held up by a fight over abortion. democrats are demanding a vote and president obama is sounding off. >> i have to say that there are times where the dysfunction in the senate just goes too far.
9:23 am
this is an example of it. enough. call loretta lynch for a vote. get her confirmed. put her in place. let her do her job. this is embarrassing a process like this. >> david dresser is with me. he's a senior correspondent for the washington examiner. good to see you. >> good to see you, arthel. >> who's pulling the strings and what are they trying to prove? >> depending on the side you're on that's your opinion. i think republicans would be happy to be rid of erik holder and confirming loretta lynch would be the perfect way to do that. i don't think anybody has that big of a problem with her despite what you've heard about her supporting the president with illegal immigrants. republicans don't like that but that's the way it is for any nominee. this is happening because democrats are holding up a human
9:24 am
trafficking bill over abortion lang language that agreed to in a committee meeting and then later said it changed. i think mitch mcconnell had enough because this came on the heels of the democrats using the threshold to put a stop to the department of security funding bill that they wanted a vote onto stop the legalization. mcconnell is trying to say we're in the majority and we run the senate, and until you move on human trafficking, we're not going to move on lynch. this is an inside baseball game. >> it's the democrat's fault. okay. congress has a 70% job disapproval rating. i want to ask you do you believe this has gone beyond reasonable use of congressional political leverage? >> well i think republicans believe that what democrats are going to human trafficking in that bill goes beyond how they should use the minority to
9:25 am
filibuster. democrats believe the opposite based on lynch. people are going to have a big disapproval of congress and the senate no matter whether they move on lynch or not, no matter whether they move on the human trafficking bill or not. if you're mitch mcconnell and only a few months into your tenure as senate majority leader, you can't allow democrats to lead the senate from the minority. >> jeb bush says the president should put his foot down. he spoke on this in new hampshire on thursday. listen. >> presidents have the right to pick their team in general. if someone is supportive of the president's policies whether you agree with them or not, there should be some deference of the executive. this should not always be partisan. the longer it takes to confirm her, the longer erik holder stays attorney general. >> will this stain the
9:26 am
process -- will it taint the gop political race. >> the process is already stained. >> let me finish the question. will this be a problem for those who are running for president on the gop side? >> no. i don't think it will. i don't think most of the americans are paying attention to this fight. >> then why are they doing it? if it's not about the american people what is it about? >> it's about asserting control at the majority senate leader. they moved to kill the trafficking bill based on abortion lang i can't imagine that republicans said they agreed to. i'm not saying who's right or wrong but i'm explaining the thinking. republicans offered some compromised language on the abortion language to get this thing moving and democrats want it scrapped entirely. if you're the republican majority just into this and you want to send a message that you
