"fox and friends" starts now. good morning. it is wednesday, april 29th. i'm elizabeth hasselbeck. a fox news alert. the curfew has just been lifted in baltimore. but after another night of violence ten more people were arrested. so did the curfew work? we are live on the streets of charmed city. almost char city. it was the video seen around the world. a mother pulling her son out of the riot. >> i turn around and i look in this crowd and my son is coming across the street with this hoodie on and a mask. at that point, i just lost it. >> she went and got him.

we love her. is it time to send in the moms? it is indeed. our nation's vets are to blame for the violence in baltimore. >> a lot of these young people -- i've been talking about this so more. a lot of these young people are coming back from war, they dpoent know their communities and they're ready to do battle. >> that reporter back tracking a bit. hear what she's saying this morning. if you're a veteran, write us. remember mornings are better with friends. welcome aboard. folks, live from studio e. we have good news. last night baltimore not as bad as the night before. it was terrible yesterday morning. >> you are right about that. credit to our reporters.

>> a lot of unscripted moments with our reporters with leland and geraldo. >> you are right with that. we are going to right to the fox news alert. mandatory curfew on the streets of baltimore, now lifted. >> just 5:00 a.m. this morning, this just hours after rioters and armed police were at odds with each other. authorities forced to use tear gas in some spots to get rid of the crowds. >> did it work? peter doocy live in baltimore with the very latest. peter? >> the very latest in the last few minutes, hammers and nails and big plywood sheets going on to what were the windows of that cvs that was looted and then burned by rioters on monday. for the first time since we've been here now, traffic is flowing through this intersection. it's been the center of all the protests north, and pennsylvania. but authorities are still here. you can see just in the last few minutes these officers were all dropped off.

they are waiting here. at the other side of the intersection just ipcase. that said last night was quieter. officials are declaring that the first night of the curfew was a success. when you watch the video, there were some folks -- many many folks who stayed out past the curfew started at 10:00. they were sent home with pepper balls. other folks were sent to jail for handcuffs for wandering into the area despite many warnings not to. there were no big structure fires. only one officer was injured when somebody in the crowd threw rocks. away from the front lines, we are told that officers are checking tapes and they are rounding up the rioters. >> there's an infamous photo of a gentleman standing on top of our cars we took him into custody monday morning. we have good detectives who are going to go through every piece of video footage that's out there. everything that's on social media. we'll find the people that are responsible for the crime.

we're going to arrest them. >> even though things were more peaceful last night, officials not convinced the threat is over. that's why tonight's orioles white sox game will be played in private. camden yards will be closed to the public. nobody is going to catch a foul ball nobody is going to sing the seventh inning stretch. they don't know if the city is safe yet. >> baltimore is ready for t do you remember -- elizabeth you remember what it was like in new york after 9/11? we had the president of the united states throwing out a first pitch. you can't secure baltimore, you have all these emergency plans? if you can't play the game in front of people don't play the game. move it or don't play. >> america's game. it's the first time in 145 year history no fans have been there.

>> baseball should be embarrassed. >> the city should be embarrassed by the fact there was so much violence outside they said stay in the stadium because we can't insure your safety. we should also point out what took so long in baltimore to get the needed help there, well apparently according to leland vittert vittert, our reporter on the streets last night in baltimore. the mayor told the cops stand down. just don't do anything stand down. >> governor confirmed that. there was a stand down order. senior law enforcement official said he was given a direct order by the mayor to her police chief to stand down. >> we didn't see the mayor for eight hours. we did see her, she was depressed. she was waiting three hours to get in touch with the governor. >> the mayor didn't do anything there was one mother we want to remind you about. her name toya graham.

she was watching television on monday night during the rioting and looting. she realized, one of those kids is my son. she went down and found him. she appeared on the cbs evening news last night to explain why she went and did that. >> i turn around and i look in this crowd and my son is actually coming across the street with this hoodie on and a mask. at that point, i just lost it. he gave me eye contact. at that point, not really thinking about cameras or anything like that. that's my only son. and at the end of the day, i don't want him to be a freddie gray. is he a perfect boy? no he's not. but he's mine. i'm just grateful that i was able to get him home. we actually sit back and watched the news. he had facebook friends and everybody, you know making comments saying you shouldn't be mad at your mother.

don't get the community and want to do battle. she talked about our veterans being responsible for this. >> i've been talking about this so much a lot of our young people -- i love the veterans some of them are coming back they don't know the communities and they're ready to do baultttle. >> because they're ready to do battle she said don't hire veterans. >> they want to do battle they're protecting your freedom to stand there miked standing on the streets. you say they're ready to do battle and ready to do violence. >> she did tweet somewhat of a apology or walking it back. >> here's the thing, she tweeted it. she said it on television. the big question is will she apologize on air or will she be like carol cost elo who refused to apologize on the air after she told her audience to enjoy

crystal palin's assault. she apologized to some online news source. since many more people are watching right now than watch cnn, brooke baldwin did apologize on twitter. the big question is will she do it on television. >> the other thing i think it's out, she's wrong in the question. you watched a bunch of people back up instead of taking aggressive action. you don't have to explain aggressive action when we just reported they were told to backup by the mayor and they sustained at least 15 injuries because of it. >> how about the fact speaking about the term battle when these men and women are protecting her in that very moment. national guard called in. the military veterans who have joined law enforcement to protect her. >> she got into a twitter fight with people. she went initially on twitter, don't get mad at mine i'm just repeating what friends have told

me. >> think before you say something like that. the national guard has been called in to do service because it was too violent. >> i know you don't watch cnn, if you did you would have seen that. >> do you know what my friends are telling me about heather nauert? they really like her and they want me to toss to her. same about you guys. good morning. a terror attack on the u.s. embassy in saudi arabia foiled. 93 suspected terrorists with ties to isis are under arrest for planning multiple attacks in that mild eastern nation. the plot involved parking a car bomb outside the u.s. embassy, as well as targeted residential calm pounds and security forces. the embassy was closed last night month because of security fears. a scare in the air a plane forced to make an emergency landing after an engine catches fire.

it was diverted to philadelphia after one of the propellers stopped. the cell phone video shows passengers scrambling on the tarmac after they were evacuated. that plane eventually landed safely. we don't have the video, but it does exist. one person was taken to the hospital with chest pains, but is expected to be okay. tony nominations are out. the broadway smash hit finding neverland, totally snubbed. it's a musical about peter pan. the writer of it getting zero recognition among the tony. it's hauling in big bucks every week. >> it's a great show it's the best show i've ever done in my life. >> you've done fantastic shows. >> it is the best show. >> despite the snub, the show's producer says he could not be more proud of the finding neverland team. it has gotten fantastic reviews.

to tell the police departments they need to do soul searching. do you think the president's remarks were effective? >> not at l. i understand what president obama is saying, especially when he says we need to do some soul searching. michael jackson had a song years ago. it was called the man in the mirror. i think when president speaks, when members of congress speaks they need to look at the man in the mirror doing the talking. i can tell you right now, you and the viewers, it's not just the people in this community that's fed up with the government. it's many communities that's fed up not just the african-american community. we can blame everything on the police department that's fine. we get blamed all the time. the police don't make law, all we do is enforce the law that congress makes. i think congress and the president needs to look in the mirror when they make these statements. >> i have a question for you, we

understand the mayor was part of a group trying to understand what to do post ferguson in cities across the nation. do you believe that she employed a strategy here to allow these riots to occur? we've got a new report coming in according to leland vittert reporting that a senior administration source says there was direct orders from the mayor to the police chief to stand down on monday night. >> absolutely. they had to have been given that order. let me explain to you why. i was with the police there was so many things going on in front of us and the police wasn't taking any action whatsoever. the only reason they wasn't is because they were told not to. that's why we saw the riots erupt. it doesn't make any sense for the mayor to try to run the police departments, apparently that's what she did in this particular case. >> the dynamics of what's going on right now in baltimore is you've got a democrat mayor, a

republican governor. the governor was ready. the mayor, however waited three hours before she called for help. it does look as if rather than a public safety question this was a political thing. >> it is a political thing, steve. that's the problem right there. it's a political thing. it should not be only a political thing. again, police can only do so much. it's time for our members of congress and the president to stop doing so much talking and let's start doing action. talk is cheap. we get a lot of that out of washington these days. the blame is always put on the police department. >> right. but the president did call them criminals and says it's stealing not protesting. i give him credit for that. real quick, did you see a marked difference last night as opposed to monday night? >> absolutely. the streets were pretty quiet last night. there were a few arrests. matter of fact there was four more arrests this morning i'm hearing. overall, i think it was pretty

professor, first off, what brought you to that point? >> well my job at the university and the classes i was teaching was to -- in this particular class -- teach the strategic management class which was the capstone course where the students were to integrate all the learning that they've had in business courses to that point and then develop a business strategy based on a case in order to demonstrate their competency to go out and apply what they've learned in the school. >> and you said for the most part 80% of these kids -- this is supposed to show they've picked up all this knowledge over the course of their college career you noticed these kids can't do it and they were unteachable, right? >> well i would say roughly about 70% of the students were incapable, even after a review

of being able to do break even analysis to the extent to they couldn't tell you how to break even selling kool-aid you know in their driveway. if they are incapable of doing that from a competency perspective, they're not ready to go out and perform. and i said there's two issues here. one is competency and the other is professionalism. and when the competency wasn't there, and i tried to address that then issues of two students cheating students swearing at me students constantly on their cell phones i think they were doing more facebook work than school work. the behavior of these students led me to believe that on both levels, on the professional and competency level and on the

professionalism level that these students were not ready to be passed for -- and put into the workplace, at least i wasn't willing to give my personal stamp on the work i was seeing. it reflects upon me. >> they're cursing at you in and out of school. they're ignoring you. you said you're failing all of you. do you think there are good kids in the class and getting caught up with the bad kids and getting an f they don't deserve?e that there are -- you know i was given 20% more kids than they normally put through that course. so to say that there were no good apples in the basket of apples would be wrong of me. i think that there are some good apples in that basket. but that said it's impossible -- at least from my ability as a professor with 40 students in that class and very limited time of less than an hour you know three times a week for me to make the

determination of the good apples from the bad apples. but when the vast majority are bad apples i to put my foot down. >> real quick, very disappointed or not disappointed at all or could care less that texas a&m does not back up and reversed everything you did? >> well first of all, texas a&m galveston not college station. this is a satellite of galveston. i was very disappointed and am very disappointed that the administration won't back me up. but i guess on the good side of this in getting caught up in this media frenzy that i wasn't expecting, i have received my guess is somewhere between 50 and 80 letters from professors all around the country thanking me for saying what i did because they're experiencing the same thing. >> i appreciate you sharing your

news alert for you. the streets of baltimore now open again after closing down for a mandatory curfew. the night was not without drama, at least 200 people defying shut down before police got the situation under control. in total ten people were arrested. as police and national guard totalling about 3,000 try to maintain the peace in baltimore. now social media evidence suggests the same rioters, troublemakers who caused so much damageige ferguson missouri may be some of those behind some of chaos in baltimore. >> how does that happen? anna kooiman has the answer. >> analysts from a social media firm show that 20 to 50 social media accounts in baltimore are tied to the peak period of violence in ferguson. the firm which asked to remain anonymous because of its government work tells fox news channel the data show these professional protesters or anarchists took advantage of freddie gray's death to insight

violence. one account linked to recent union protests in new york city and other disturbances. despite all the violence and the looting, there are still some amazing stories of hope and inspiration coming out of baltimore. take a look at this moment. a little boy offer as group of police officers bottles of water. the image being shared all over the world. another photograph showing citizens helping cops hold the line protecting those officers from any flying debris from rioters. former baltimore ravens linebacker ray lewis who is known for his famous pep talks sends a huge message to the entire city. >> get off the streets. violence is not the answer, violence has never been the answer. too many hardworking people built this city. we put this city together. we put this city on our back. >> ray lewis goes on to tell the kids to go home and stay home. that video shared online some 22 million times.

order restored in baltimore this morning after police use tear gas to break unof protesters. one restaurant owner taking matters into his own hands standing guard outside his business all night long to keep the rioters at bay. joining me now from baltimore the owner of midtown barbecue and brew tony harrison. i'm looking at this photo of you, with what looks like a couple of friends and a dog that no one would want to mess with. why did you stand out there yourself? >> well at about 2:00 we started to see video of the police line getting beat up. we realized they weren't going to be able to help us. we decided to stand guard duty

the mayor at the time allowed the people to basically riot for a while, get the steam out, get it out. and the police backed off. until finally, the police union got so upset, cops were getting beat up so bad, the chief had to come in and end the riot. after three days of people getting pounded and beaten. in the report he wrote you shouldn't allow cooling off periods. you should arrest the fist person that throws a rock or breaks a window or tries to burn something. stop it immediately. when it's three people not when it's -- there's no such thing as a cooling off period. a beginning riot gets hotter it doesn't get cooler. it seems to me the people there and in ferguson way back when the cops backed off in the very beginning and the stores were being looted. people have a right to protest, they have a right to make their opinion known. they can be very upset about what they consider to be a
