on the ground in garland, texas. >> dozens inside were at the conference center running in panic. >> one of those people ken emmanuel has an eyewitness account. thank you for getting up early. i know you are an hour behind us. tell us what you saw, what you heard. what was going on inside and what was the reaction from the police? >> when we first -- the first perception we had that there was ago a little amiss was when we noticed the organizers were kind of hustled out of the room by security. that was a sign there was something off. i had gone up to a police officer at the front door and he told me at that time there was something going on in the parking lot and we were to remain in the room that we had been in. it wasn't too long after that that we were all told there had been a shooting in the parking

lot and there was some concern about explosives. the police were very good about keeping us informed. they were very good about keeping order. i just can't say enough good things about the garland police department. they were top-notch. >> there have been concern that there may be problems prior to this event taking place. what were your thoughts and were you concerned? >> you got a sensitive nature of the topic there, of course. there was going to be some concern. i think we all probably expected the protests which interestingly didn't happen. there was no protests outside. we thought there may be some sort of disruption. i don't think anybody expected that there would be armed gunmen with ak-47's trying to storm the event. but obviously there was some

concern with the topic there you would be concerned about that. >> ken emanuel. thank you so much for joining us. we will check back with you later on in the hour. glad you are safe this morning. >> investigators have been blocking off the car all night searching for evidence tied to the case. rod wheeler joins us with that perspective. thank you for joining us. appreciate it. >> what would investigators be looking for at this point? >> the investigators have been on scene all morning long. the priority was to make sure that vehicle did not have any incendiary devices in it or explosive devices that could harm the officers. they left the bodies of the two suspects right there on the ground until police could make sure everything because secure. what are they looking for?
2:05 am
they are going to look for clues such as are there any newspaper clippings, are there any writings. they are going to get search warrants for their homes if they are in the local area. the goal is to try to identify who they are and try to figure out whether or not their reactions were directly related to the event taking place at the center yesterday. >> since they are trying to identify the gunmen pretty quickly we assume why would the bodies be left lying in this particular vicinity outside of the car for so long? >> the reason is because the police needed to make sure that the bodies themselves were not rigged or booby trapped with some kind of explosive. we have seen that in other countries where this has happened. that's the main reason why the cops left the bodies out there until the robotic devices can make sure there's no other explosive devices on the bodies or on the vehicle itself.
2:06 am
>> is that standard procedure or is there some sort of information that may have led them to this or is that standard procedure? >> i think it's a combination of both in it this case. the reason i say this is because there had to have been some information or intelligence the garland police department may have had. they had off duty officers at the event including a fully armed swat unit in the rear of the building there. it makes me wonder whether or not there was some intelligence that some type of attack was going to take place. >> rob wheel you are thank you so much for your headlines. >> we have other matters making news the police officer who was shot point blank in the face is still fighting for his life. they were driving in an una marked patrol car in queens when they spotted a guy named demetrius blackwell.
