whiskey. all right. happy birthday. how would you celebrate your birthday if you make it to 109? john will be happy to stay up until 10. april will have a big glass of wine and a trip to the casino. and marilyn will go to the what? can't tell. she's going go to a concert. there sitit is. >> islamic state terrorists claiming credit for the shooting in texas and promising more attacks. it's the first time the group has tried to take responsibility for a strike here in the united states. but did isis really have anything at all to do with this? we will hear what sources are telling us. plus reconsidering retirement. more older people saying they don't have enough saved to retire and pledging to stay on the job after turning 65 and beyond. we will look at the four steps you can take right now to better manage your money. and why the actor ryan gossling
12:01 pm
is paying tribute to a man who made fun of him. let's get to it. and first from the fox news desk this afternoon, the islamic state is now claiming credit for an attack on american soil. it's the first one. the shooting at a muhammad cartoon contest in texas and a source says it may not be just propaganda. these are the two guys according to that counter terrorism source social media link at least one of these guys to isis fighters overseas but the white house says it's too early to place blame. >> we certainly want to make sure we know a whole lot more about the facts. we do know that there are extremists around the globe including some who are affiliate affiliated with isis trying to caplize on the opportunity presented by social media. >> isis put out a radio message
12:02 pm
on its own radio station. yes it has one. and it called the two gunmen soldiers of the califate. police say the gunman shot one officer in the leg before another officer shot both suspects dead. as we reported the feds busted one of the guys in a terror related case five years ago but only a charge of lying to the fbi would stick and he got off on probation. katherine is live with us in our watch of the newsroom this afternoon. there's a twitter connection of some kind? >> a review of social media traffic shows that at least one of the shooters had contact with established isis accounts overseas and in particular there will two tweets that our attention were drawn to. take a look at the first one there on the top. it takes about the men and how they may miss them after the
12:03 pm
fact giving the sense that there was prior contact. and the second one there on the bottom talking about one of the shooters as a man of wisdom. when you look at this where you see in the upper left the leader of this new digital jihad and was killed in that cia drone strike in 2011 yet he still goes on to inspire from the grave to this day. when you look at the social media traffic now there's a real discussion over whether this attack was inspired by or directed by isis. and this is really quite frankly, sort of a false debate in the sense that these operatives now have what amount to a standing order to launch attacks at the time and place of their choosing. a cart blanch to be terrorists. >> there are suggestions of similarities on these attacks
12:04 pm
and "charlie ebdo." >> the homeland security chairman who is getting regular briefings on the shooting in garland, texas, told fox news that there are really striking similarities between this attack and what we saw transpire in paris earlier this year. when you look at the operatives what you see is a common link but when it came to launch the attack it was at a time and place of their choosing. let's listen to the congressman. >> i believe it's a terrorist attack on free speech in america and you know like what we saw in paris, we're now seeing it happen in the homeland. >> uh-huh. he also told fox news that there was a joint homeland security bulletin warning about this event where they drew the cartoons of the profete muhammad and that is where we saw the extra security. mccall would be the first person
12:05 pm
to emphasize that you just can't do that for every event that might insult someone's sensibilities. >> nice to tau to you, katherine, thank you. >> let's bring in michael silver. this group, i mean there is anti-islam as it gets. the woman who runs this group makes money off of anti-islam. she has been doing this for a long time. she's taking fair shots at everybody i know and now she's down there poking the bear. i'm not saying that excuses anything. certainly there is no excuse. there is no excuse for this but what are we to make of this big picture? there's a group in america that wants a huge group of americans
12:06 pm
afraid. >> yaw, the unfortunate thing is that it didn't take much for two individuals to disease to arm up and take tactic. an attack on free speech as well as in paris. so they did poke the bear to some degree but it doesn't excuse this group's activities and these individuals do have some connection to isis. it's not just two truly loan actors and one of these individuals as we know is very interested in going somalia. there were pre-conditions that show their level of interest in getting involved in violence. >> what i'm asking you is do you think there is reason for everyday americans who right now are in car pool lines picking their kids up from school or lateler go to the grocery store or drive through at mcdonald's to be worry that there is a new threat now that there wasn't before pamela geller's thing.
12:07 pm
there really isn't is there? >> it's not a new threat because of this but if you look at the last six months if we're talking about sydney australia, monday y'all, copenhagenen now this there's a definite increase in the amounts of attacks in western europe in the west. so that phenomena is increasing but for most americans online or doing car pool no it's not a new threat. >> what are we supposed to do? >> the average american is to be just aware and alert. looking for someone who, you know seems like they have got some malicious designs. but this is a job for intelligence and law enforcement. they're going to be on the front lines monitoring the threat and also detecting the threat before it turns to violence. >> sounds like they were well armed. they had body armor according to police there and took one traffic cop with a pistol. thank god for that guy. thank god they were ready for this. >> yeah.
12:08 pm
we're lucky that most of these individuals who are jihadi jihadi wannabes most of them are not experienced and haven't gone overseas. >> nice to talk to you. thank you. >> you, too. >> secretary of state john kerry did something today that no secretary of state has ever done. ever. that's coming up. we will also take you to baltimore where the new attorney general is visiting today. stay with us. across america, people are taking charge of their type 2 diabetes... ...with non-insulin victoza. for a while, i took a pill to lower my blood sugar but it didn't get me to my goal. so i asked my doctor about victoza. he said victoza works differently than pills and comes in a pen. victoza is proven to lower blood sugar and a1c. it's taken once a day, any time. and the needle is thin. victoza is not for weight loss but it may help you lose some weight. victoza is an injectable prescription medicine that may improve blood sugar in adults

12:13 pm
minutes ago who told me his meeting was brief and in terms of substance from what we have heard from regular dispatches inside these meetings loretta lynch has been very complimentary about the officers that she says have a noble but difficult job. >> you have picked one of the best professions out there today. you have picked the one that let's you go out every day and i i'm going to help somebody. despite how people may want to characterize you, hold on to that as you go out on patrol every day. >> and lynch has been very upfront today about how meetings like the ones she has been dropping in on throughout baltimore are a small part of the solution that baltimore is looking for. she has also met with the mayor, local leaders and some of the 100 plus officers who were injured in the looting and riot rioting. >> regarding all of that most of the businesses that were damaged were locally owned

business. >> we have seen today on that very hyper local level some of the businesses that were not damaged have been pitching in to help neighbors that lot everything. three businesses that served the mt. vernon community are going to have a fundraiser where they ask for a $5 donation and they give a portion of their sales away. the help is coming little by little. they are still adding up the cost of the damage. the bigst news came from the cvs is going be rebuilt and that rebuilding is not just symbolic. that cvs at the corner of pennsylvania and north is one of the only places in that entire area to get fresh food. >> live for us on scene, peter

so much for riding into the sunset at 65. there's another new survey out and this one finds that four of every five workers 60 and over plan to keep working past the traditional retirement age, past 65. the study finds that 82% of older workers plan to retire after 65 or never. the transamerica center for retirement studyies conducted this research. i get it. a lot of people want to work until the day they die. i don't ever want to lose a
12:20 pm
couple of bosses that i have like that but i really think they should go home and be quiet. everybody has to make their own decision unless you can't make the decision because you don't have enough money. >> retirement has changed where a lot of people want to keep working and we're living longer and health care in retirement can be as much as $250,000 in addition to just paying for regular living expenses. it's better to start sooner but it's never too late to start looking. >> it's 3:20 in the afternoon and a lot of people watching this are not as young as they want to be. when is it too late? if you're 60 or 55 what can you do? what's the best thing you can do now to make it easier later? >> here is the good news. you don't have to feel overwhelmed. there is a lot you can do. you can always save more. that's an easy piece of advice. >> not easy to do. >> easier said than done but we find that working just a few

more years can significantly improve the quality of life when you get to retirement age. just socking away a few extra thousand for three, five more years a lot of baby boomers are starting their own businesses and going into encore careers. you don't have to stay put where you are necessarily. >> for people who are retiring many times you get one level of benefits at 65 and maybe another level of benefits at 68 or 69. if you can just hold on a few years, everything can change. >> this is so true. i cannot emphasize this point enough. the longer you can wait to delay taking social security pension benefits at work the higher your benefits will be over the course of your lifetime. this is important because social security is guaranteed index to inflation that means you will not outlive that benefit. that's something you can count on. >> some places offer you a cash payout unless you have to you don't want to. it sounds so great but it's not is it? >> it does sound great but it's
12:22 pm
something you can burn through quickly especially if you also have kids in college. last thing you want to do is put it through their loans or schooling. this is really something you have to plan for the long term with. work with an advisor or talk to your hr people at work. they can really help you figure out what to do. >> if you're approaching retirement age, do you need to start working on a help for medicare plan now? i mean is it -- is there a time when it's too early for that? >> medical costs are a big burden when it gets to retirement. often we don't think about it. we retire and we feel good. it's not until we really need them that we think about it. >> insurance that will take care of you in case all of the sudden you're not healthy any more. >> right. so the best time to look into that is the early to mid 50s. if you're in that age ragt it
12:23 pm
might be worst making a call and look into it. >> call your pank starting with the representative of your bank is always a good place. if they can't help you they can point towards you can. always go with that gut instinct. >> i wish we had an hour. take an hour. take an hour if you're my age or older, sit down with a couple of people you trust. maybe a loved one, maybe somebody from the bank financial planner, maybe your preacher. >> preachers can help quite a bit. my dad is a preacher. >> at least you won't get a bum wrap from them usually. >> and they won't judge you. >> david letterman is about to retire himself. guessing he's okay. not sure. last night he talked to another future retiree. >> what will you do when you're not president? >> i was thinking you and me we could play some dominosing to. >> dominos? >> all right.
12:24 pm
>> go to the local starbucks. swap stories. >> maybe some dice. the president said that he also plans to keep working on a couple of causes including fighting climate change and helping military families. last interview with old david letterman. a lot of celebrities wore crazy looking outfits at the annual met gala. have you heard about this thing? it's met gala and i thought about watching it but i got to see some of the clothes and we put lil on it. do you have a clue what this is? >> not quite sure. but i know what she was going for. it was -- >> go on. >> the theme this year was china through the looking glass. it's an annual event to raise awareness and fun for the metropolitan museum of art.
12:25 pm
for her this meant a fiery head dress thing. she always goes all out. his first year there, justin bieber had a gold dragon outfit on. >> word to mayweather. never mind. >> they're looking for intergalactic battle was lady gaga. also ready was ann hathaway. the internet thought she looked like something out of starwars but was torn between two characters. i thought this was one of the weirder ones. >> that looks like something you might put flowers in on a large table. >> it's something that lives in the ocean. >> it should remain there. >> a bit of a scandal there last night. kim kardashian wore this. >> wait kim kardashian meets scandal? ground breaking. >> everyone said that this dress looked a lot like beyonce's 2012
12:26 pm
dress. beyonce managed to show more skin. this was her outfit. it looks a little i dream of genie meets bedazzledness. but the winner was rihanna. she dressed like a giant omelet and it was amazing. it was two years to make this thing. she found it by googling chinese couture on the internet. >> wow. >> that is the best reaction i think. >> did you see the backstage for the other thing? remember the other thing? weird? >> no. >> over on the nbc. good for you for not watching that. >> i don't know what you're talking about. >> that's a crazy color. what is this? >> a head dress thing. she put on a trash bag, too, for the afterparty. >> that looks a little bit like mike tyson's face tattoo. >> it does. it was like 82 degrees and she has this fur thing. >> i don't know what the heck people are thinking. >> she pulls it off better than
12:27 pm
most people would, though. i can't think of anybody else who would look as good as ree that rihanna. >> she would look good with mud on. >> she has tried everything. >> did you go? >> maybe one day. >> i bet you will. thank you. >> we are hearing from the families of the suspects in the attacks on the muhammad cartoonists. and we will have a live report from garland, texas. women on the front lines. there's a book that tells the story of one unit's special mission and the first member to die in battle. women of war will speak with the author of the book coming up on shepherd smith reporting. at those two. happy. in love. and saving so much money on their car insurance by switching to geico... well, just look at this setting. do you have the ring? oh, helzberg diamonds. another beautiful setting.

'08. today he took aim at potential rivals. >> i don't have a taxpayer funded paycheck to live off of. i don't come from a family dynasty but a working family. >> the other official candidates are ted cruz rand paul and marco rubio plus ben carson and we're just getting going. >> hillary clinton campaigning in nevada today. sources say she will call for a path to citizenship for people in this country illegally. the news continues from the fox news desk in just a moment including a report on the new book about the women in the war on afghanistan.
12:32 pm
12:33 pm
as we reported earlier the islamic state has now at least tried to take credit for the shooting. if it's true it will be the group's first attack in the united states. a counter terrorism source tells fox news that at least one suspect does indeed have ties but through twitter. the white house says it's too early to confirm whether the terror group was to blame. cops say the men had body armor and opened fire with rifles hitting a security officer in the ankle. a different officer, a person who happened to be a traffic officer shot and killed the man with a handgun. jonathan hunt is in garland, texas. what are the suspect's relatives saying about all of this? i hear they're talking? >> reporter: they are and to elton simpson first, given that in the initial going of this investigation, officials appear to believe that he was the ring leader. his family has issued a statement through attorneys. they say that they have
12:34 pm
sympathies towards the victims, in particular the security officer who was likely wounded in the attack and they say they were completely surprised by it. the statement going on to say and i quote here we are sure many people in this country are curious to know if we had any idea of elton's plans. to that we say without question we did not. now as for the family of soofi, they seem to have been taken completely by surprise by his actions. they also say his mother says that she does not blame police for killing her son. listen here. >> i'm thankful he did not kill anybody and i don't blame the policeman that shot and killed him. he was just doing his job. if you attempt something like this you have to expect it. you're not going -- you may not come back alive or you won't be a free man for sure.
12:35 pm
>> reporter: so two bereaved families two families in complete shock at what those two shooters tried to do here. >> what about the investigation on the ground jonathan? >> reporter: literally on the ground behind me where the car was in which those two shooters arrived here that has wrapped up now. our cameras caught the moment last evening when the car was finally towed away from the crime scene. with it all the evidence that it may have. now investigators obviously off site now will continue to pore over every single item that was in that car seeing if they can establish whether or not there was a direct link between either of the shooters and isis. and there's a lot of people in texas telling us if isis was, as they claim, responsible for this attack then they were in effect responsible for an attack that was a complete failure. two men armed with assault rifles wearing body armor taken
12:36 pm
down by one traffic cop with a service pistol. shep? >> johnathan hunt on scene. jonathan thank you. we're learning more today about the first women going into combat zones although they are still banned from combat. the idea was that they could form relationships with men that men could not. it tells the story of one unit and the first member to die in action first lieutenant ashley white. it's called "ashley's war." the author is gale and she joins us now. it's nice to see you. thank you. >> great to join you. >> tell us what people who haven't read the book should know about this bunch? >> you know this at its heart is the story of female friendship forged in the unlikeliest of places. this was a group of female
12:37 pm
soldiers who answered america's call to serve when america said we need women to go night in and night out on a special operations battlefield to see the kind of combat seen by less than 5% of the united states military this group of women answered and i think they will forever be one another's family and friends and people that they call at 2:00 a.m. not just because of what they saw and the people among whom they served but because they were at the tip of a spear at a time when women were not in ground combat operations and that friendship i think, will last forever. >> the main title is "ashley's war". you spoke at length with ashley's mom about this and she gave you an idea a ritcher idea of what thiseant for ashley. >> absolutely. i mean her mother is a beautiful person and i really think her family represents the best of american values. hard work sacrifice, never taking the easy wrong over the hard right. and her mother said it's about god, family and country for
12:38 pm
ashley. and if part of ashley's legacy is letting america know about this beautiful team of women who answered america's call to serve, then that is part of what she has left us. >> there were only a few dozen of these women, 5 55 or 60? >> there was something that said female soldiers become part of history. 110 or so come to ft. bragg for what was called 100 hours of hell. they are competing against one another and there is such a spirit of comradery. we have to be here because what we are doing will affect women after us. 55 or 60 are chosen and of that group about 20 are chosen to go alongside the finest fighters sales, army special forces on combat operations in 2011. >> and you write in the book
12:39 pm
that maybe the most important aspect is understanding cultures. if there is one thing that we can look back as a society in the united states and really in all of the west and realize is that we don't understand the culture well enough to figure out how to win a war. and to the degree that they could, these women helped us with that a lot. >> absolutely. you talk to admiral olson, the first navy saleeal operational command and they said we will never kill our way to the end of this war. we need more knowledge. if you're going to find out what half the population thinks you need female soldiers in a conservative traditional country to go out there alongside the fighters. you had to have the best most fit and most fierce and most feminine female soldiers. in the heat they had to take off their helmet and show that they were women. so amber, one of the people in the book wears braids under her
12:40 pm
helmet so that she can immediately show women that she is also a female and women would say look the guy you're looking for is two houses over. this guy burst into our house today and has taken our whole family hostage and that is information that we would not have had without those women there. and that's why you see rangers giving them impact awards. i had a ranger first sergeant said a job well done stands out. those women proved themselves every night. >> the women who raised their hands and said send me send me send me. >> that's right. >> and then were invaluable to us all. the book is "ashley's war." the author is gale some. >> great to join you. thank you. rsh thank you. a top republican is predicting the senate will pass a bipartisan bill to give a nuclear deal with iran if one ever happens but first gop leaders have to resolve a dispute over possible changes to the bill. some are trying to add
12:41 pm
ammendments which really isn't all that surprising. one would force iran to admit that israel has the right to exist and from the beginning the president said let's keep these matters separate. another would require the white house to make sure that iran is not sponsoring terrorism targeting the united states. critics call those poison pill amendments because they could really derail the ongoing talks with iran. the deadline is june 30th. where do things stand in the senate right now. >> mitch mcconnel says they are trying to reach an agreement to take up a few more of those amendments but time at this point is clearly becoming a factor. >> i don't know how many times you guys want to ask the same questions but we're going to move forward. >> he gave a very quick answer there. sounds like senator mcconnel will start the clock later today or perhaps tomorrow shep. >> and these amendments those who said that largely this was
12:42 pm
about an intent to derail any progress the president might make. whoever is putting towards those amendments is playing into that hand. >> some republicans say these amendments would make the bill stronger. you have presidential hopeful senator marco rubio saying the regime must recognize israelis right to exist while tom cotton would require iran to expose nuclear history and close all of its facilities. some democrats don't want to go there. >> we brought that to the floor and tried to cooperate as much as we could until we realized that every amendment the republicans offered was to denigrate and hurt and destroy that bill. we're not going to do that. >> there are a lot of folks right now who are saying that that bipartisan compromise is very fragile and they're worried that the amendments could tip the balance a bit. it would improve the bill make it stronger and some democrats say it possibly threatens the
