this, we've all seen the movie, zero dark thirty. we know about the bin laden raid and then this hursh guy who has been in business a long time. he came out with a story that said that pakistan was in on it and somebody in pakistan gave the whereabouts of bin laden to the united states to get part of that $25 million bounty. you said yesterday that the guy is just full of you know what. is any part of accurate? >> no. look, i was in every meeting from the very beginning. when we found the compound, when we trailed the courier to the compound. i was in every single meeting. i was in the meeting with the president when the president decided we will not tell the pakistanis. we will share none of it. the president sents me to pakistan after the raid to start smoothing over the relationship because the pakistanis were furious with us.
3:36 am
the pakistanis did not know. some pakistani official didn't give us the information to us. >> nbc is now today doubling down. they say two intelligence sources tell nbc news that before the u.s. said the raid killed bin laden it was a walk in. >> look, what i don't know is whether somebody did walk in and say i know where he is. i can guarantee you that any information given to us by a walk in with regard to bin laden and there were probably a lot of people who walked in and said i know where he is, that was completely irrelevant. the story of trailing, finding the courier, trailing the courier, finding the compound, that's the story of what happened. >> nobody collected any part of that $25 million bounty? >> nope. >> that's easy to track. >> bin laden's parts weren't dropped through the cush valley? >> can you contrast briefing president bush and president obama? >> sure.
3:37 am
there's a similarity, right, and the similarity is how important intelligence was to president bush and how important it is to president obama. it's a reflection of the world we live in. incredibly dangerous threats, all of them requiring intelligence for you to understand them and make policy. both of them craved intelligence. the difference of how they absorb it, president bush best absorbed it by having a conversation like we're having. >> you had to brief him every day. >> exactly. it was talking about that's the way he absorbed it. >> he said i'm going to be easy. >> it was the other people in the room that were hard. president obama absorbs it best by reading it. it's the nature of who you are as a person and how you absorb information. >> do you know he reads it every day? >> yes. yes. >> what do you make of the criticism of this president that so many decisions are made regarding national security and other things, but first before

3:39 am
>> yes, we were observing it. that's our job is to collect intelligence. we were in benghazi primarily to collect intelligence on this surge, right, of growth of islamic extremism in eastern libya and benghazi. that's why we were there. >> now we have a situation where kadafi is gone and now that things are worse off. >> yes. >> you have saddam hussein is gone, you could argue things are worse off for us intelligence wise. and assad is barely holding on. that seems to be the nexus of the terror headquarters over in raqqa today. how do we solve this problem? >> i have a whole chapter on this, it's called the al qaeda spring. not the arab spring. >> did we misinterpret what that spring was supposed to be? >> absolutely we did. cia, when the arab spring first happened, my analysts said we think this is going to undercut al qaeda. this will undercut their
3:40 am
narrative that you need violence to bring political change. the reality is the arab spring was a boon to al qaeda for all the reasons you just said. i think the lesson isn't about intelligence here, i think the lesson is about policy, right. the united states has this tendency to want to push democracy everywhere in the world. we try to push democracy in gaza and we got hamas. tried to push iraq and got chaos. tried to push it in libya, and got chaos. some societies aren't ready for democracy. that's a lesson we haven't learned yet. >> i think it was a -- to give people the opportunity to decide what they want. that was our goal. rather than saying take democracy, you decide your futurement. >> we helped, right. we helped in both iraq and we helped in libya. >> the book -- brand new book out today it's great. called the great war of our time. mike morell.
