[ female announcer ] stay strong, stay active with boost. ♪ >> hello. welcome to "sunday housecall" on this memorial day weekend. >> i'm arthel neville. so glad you're joining us. also professor of lenox hill hospital and chief of robotics surgery joining us live via remote. and. >> and the author of the inner pulse, inlocking the inner code of sickness and health. >> let's get to it. lots of people bbqing this weekend. we're told there are some safety tips you should know before firing up that grill.
9:31 am
dr. samadi, i personally like all the burnt pieces. am i taking in carcinogens? >> can you imagine final lie we' -- finally we're going to get a break. while you have all our food and burgers and hot dogs on the table and you're swimming, if that food sticks around for over two years, you're at risk. in a hot weather of 85 to 90 degrees, if the food is out for more than an hour or so, don't eat it anymore. or refrigerate it quickly. i think it's important to invest in a good thermometer to see if your food is cooked and definitely we've spoken about this all the time. don't mix the raw and pork and meat and mix it with cooked food. i think the cross contamination with the bacterias are very dangerous and wash your hands all the time. that's the key. >> the key here in addition to
9:32 am
that is that the food handlers are the ones spreading the bacteria david is talking about. you do not want to mix your raw meat with your cooked meat. that's what food handlers do sometimes and your produce especially. keep that away from the bbq and the meat thermometer. clean the grill and clean the surfaces. and use soap and water on the attachments to see if there's any leaks. there are 8800 home fires due to bbqs each year. get them outside. some people are bbqing inside. get it away from the house. have a designated place and don't let your 10-year-old bbq like some have accused me of. make sure it's an adult. >> marc has been at our house
9:33 am
and we've bbq d together. i think the problem with marc was he was drinking too much beer. what happens in the summertime is you're being dehydrated and when you drink a lot of beer, that's a diuretic where you lose a lot of water. be cautioned to make sure you drink water and i agree with you. i think it is not mixing the raw foods with vegetables and fruits and not using the same knife. that cross contamination is a big deal and you have to be careful. >> arthel mentioned what you like, the charred bits, like the charred stuff. >> i like the black parts. >> recently i've been putting it in tinfoil as opposed to putting it straight on the grill. >> that's a great idea. and you marinade it. it limits the amount of carcinog carcinogen. >> has that been proving? >> >> it increases the rates of cancer. we talked last week about people
9:34 am
getting dehydrated from diuretics. there's plenty of people on diuretics out in the heat and drinking beer and all that. be careful about this, especially if you're on a diuretic for blood pressure. you get in the heat and get even more dehydrated. i took arthel's advice with the margarita. that was good. >> i want to make a point about cross contamination and both of you doctors said to wash your hands, especially the hook, you pointed out, dr. siegel is the one who's more likely to contaminate. they take their hands and wipe them on the apron. you're using the same apron. and then they touch something else. >> absolutely great point and by the way, the reason this is happening is another story that we've covered which is that there's an epidemic of bacteria
9:35 am
in chicken and beef now. you're getting the raw meat. you think it doesn't have any bacteria. i don't want to gross anybody out but a lot of the chicken has the bacteria in it. you have to cook it out. if you're a food handler, you get it on your hands -- >> you don't want to eat undercooked chicken, right? >> the temperature you want for your burgers, about 140 degrees. for chicken it's about 160. i know as a urologist, it sounds like i know what i'm doing. we always have someone with a thermometer looking at the temperature of the meat. >> i want to say that my personal experience, i can tell you you do two things incredibly well, prostate surgery and bbqing. >> i'm not mixing those two. >> do the vegetables first. do that first and then go to the raw meat so there's no
9:36 am
possibility of cross contamination. >> or the tinfoil, wrap your vegetables in that too. corn or vegetables. >> wrap an onion. >> it's too much information. all of you are invited this summer and we'll have an amazing time. let's just enjoy it. >> wrap an onion in tinfoil and let that baby sit in there. it is good. >> and watch out for the fires. that's an important problem. >> i agree with arthel. she knows the way she wants her food. >> she'll be the master chef. next on cook with the doctors, this is the summer we'll be going to the beach as you know but the doctors coming up will tell us about sunscreens. you think they're all the same with the 50, 60, 85, 100 spf but what does that really mean and it turns out, they say, that not all sunscreens have the same protection. they'll fill us in when we come back.

a new survey throwing shade on common sunscreen products saying many are not as effective as advertised. is this true? >> i think it's true. the study was done in a strange way which is they took people, put the sunscreen on them and then bathed them in water for the amount of time that the sunscreen producers said it was going to stay on and they found in one-third of cases it washed right off but this is a reminder, though. instead of saying one product is good and one is bad, this is a reminder that you have to reapply this stuff after you go swimming and that you have to use other methods besides sunscreen including hats and

sunglasses and long sleeves. and then when you're looking for a product, sun protection factor means that 15 times longer you're protected than if you didn't have it on, that's spf 15. it has to be at least 15 or 30. and one more point, we're protecting against all ultraviolet a and b. i want to say right now the european sunscreens which have ten asoren f in them. i think we don't have the ideal sunscreens on the market that we need here. >> so, dr. samadi, what do you say to folks watching who say i don't want to wear sunscreen. i want a tan. >> i'm actually one of them. i enjoy the sun, but i think there's an art of getting enough sun that you're going to be tan

but not burn yourself. i think when you start having too long of a period without the sunscreen, that's when you start burning and getting the first degree burn and accumulation of that can lead to melanoma and other things. this particular study by consumer report, i don't think it's accurate or done well. consumer reports usually does a great job but in this particular case, they're looking at few people and the way they did this study, i don't think it's really legit. the big message is that good brands, copper tone sunscreen, spf 50, broad spectrum for uva and uv a b, that's a good one. banana boat, that's a good one. for kids, the spray is a great one but reapplication of this is very important. the best sunscreen is to be in the shade and wear your hat and

shirt. you still get a beautiful tan and you're okay. tanning lotions are fine. they're fairly safe if you want to get the color but the idea is to be out there and really enjoy and not get burned. >> and dr. samadi made a great point. you put it on sometimes and in the late morning and go out and forget about it all day. you have to reapply these. >> every couple of hours. that's the point about this consumer report study even though i agree it wasn't well done. the point is if you go in the water, if you go in the ocean, you have to reapply it after. >> even not. they kind of wear off, don't they. >> absolutely, and there's also a debate about vitamin d. you get a ton of it from the sun. if i advertise too much sunscreen, then you're going to end up needing vitamin d supplements. that's one advantage of sunlight. i don't entirely agree with david. i use more sunscreen than he
9:44 am
does. but it does block the vitamin d. david loves copper tone. i love the sound of banana boat. >> i think as far as vitamin d is concerned, all you need is about 15 minutes of exposure without the shirt and you will get about 10,000 units of vitamin d three times a week if you basically are not wearing your shirt and you have that exposure, you will get it. i think a lot of these exposures to uva and uvb, especially at tanning salons, attacks on the skin is what can cause this kind of melmelanoma. so being out there for a few times in the summer, cover yourself in the lotion, you should be fine. >> who are you saying shouldn't wear their shirt, by the way? men only, right? >> i'll take the fifth on that. >> depends on the beach. >> go out and enjoy the sun.
9:45 am
great advice from the doctors. and reapply the sunscreen. >> if you're out on the beach, you might enjoy drinks. what do you do about the hang over? coming up, the doctors will tell us about a household product that will make you feel like yourself again as "sunday housecall" continues. listen up... i'm reworking the menu. veggies you're cool...

housecall." you know the dreaded hangover? it's almost inevitable if you drink too much but now they're saying a surprising drink you give to children is maybe going to make you feel like normal. what do you do? >> this is a secret a lot of actors and actresses have been
9:49 am
doing for a lot of years. drinking and consuming pedialyte for hangovers. pedialyte has a lot of minerals and electrolytes but also low sugar, so we give it to the kids when they're sick to replace their electrolytes. a lot of people out there drinking a lot of alcohol may have a hongover and they're using pedialyte to replace their fluid. it's working really well to the point of the consumption of pedialyte by adults is up by 60 percent. this is big news. i think it works really well. i have never tried it myself but it makes sense. the fact you're not getting a lot of calories and sugar but you get the electrolytes and minerals. a lot of athletes are using it as well. >> i was just going to say what
9:50 am
do you think about drinking it? you already know you had too many. how about drinking it before you go to sleep? >> that's probably with marc did when you did the 60 mile biking? >> that's probably what mark did. >> we used a lot of pedialite and gatorade. the night before, i call it two fisted drinking, alcohol in one hand, water in the other. water is the only thing you can use for a hangover remedy. eye of the dog is ridiculous. you'll have more alcohol. coffee, which we love on the show here, coffee is a diuretic. it will make the problem worse. the main symptoms of a hangover are being dehydrated. alcohol drys you out. you got to replace it with water or electrolytes, pedialite. we talked about not just drinking plain water. it gives you electrolytes. you get magnesium depleted, stuff with that. i like fruits and vegetables as well. have a light breakfast, fruit and vegetables, pedia lite or water.
9:51 am
don't take aspirin. it is going to irritate your stomach. fatty meals, they think that's a hangover remedy. that irritates your stomach. tylenol is okay. you have a few too many tylenol. it is toxic to deliver. you already poisoned it. >> before people run out and get pedialite, i can drink up wazoo -- >> i think social drinking is fine. i think that having fatty meal, or have some sort of a meal before you go out, where you coat the stomach lining and it does reduce the absorption of alcohol is really good. i think drinking afterwards is already too late. you want to drink before you go out. and make sure you're well hydrated so when you have the alcohol, you don't end up with that migraine headache as a result of it. and i think that if you feel like you're tired and fatigued, which is probably the low potassium, low salt, low magnesium, pedialite is a big

kick in the butt that can help you. >> i agree with that. i agree being prepared. if you have the big meal, have it before, not after. i want to say one more thing, designated driver. can't say that enough. we're talking hangovers. if you drove home, you put lives at risk including your own. >> they say buzz driving is drunk driving. >> absolutely. we're talking about binge drinking, people not prepared for it, have a designated driver. >> heat stroke and dehydration sends hundreds of people to the hospital every year. next, the doctors will give you tips about how you can protect yourself this summer and also have a good time. what up wheels! mr. auto-mo-deal!

i love making sunday dinners. but when my back hurt, cooking all day... forget about it. tylenol was ok, but it was 6 pills a day. but aleve is just 2 pills all day. and now, i'm back! aleve. being outside in the heat all day can take a toll on your body. there are a number of things you can do to make sure you stay safe this summer. dr. segal, you say what? >> i say that the first thing you have to worry about is something called heat exhaustion. if you're out in the heat and
9:57 am
you're starting to feel really sweaty, heavy sweaty and fatigued and getting muscle aches and not sure what's going on, you got to get out of the heat, drink water, and get cool wash on you. that's heat exhaustion. here is what i'm really worried about. if that go on and you can see on the right there, heat stroke, this is heat exhaustion, heavy swa sweating, weakness, cold, pale, fainting. there is something called heat stroke. and here's the key with that. you stop sweating. your skin gets very dry and red and hot. you go to 103, 104 degrees, get very confused. altered mental status, rapid pulse, and you may black out. that's a medical emergency, that's 911 time. that's when you have to get to the hospital right away. if i come upon somebody with that on a trail, david says if i'm mountain biking, i might put a wash cloth on, cool clothes on top, got to get that person to the hospital. >> is there something to this
9:58 am
that i've heard a long time ago that if you're outside in the hot weather, don't come in and drink extremely cold water, that -- >> there is something to that, and you want to basically -- any major change in your temperature is not going to be good for your body. you want to do is it very gradually. i think this disistinction betwn heat exhaustion and heat stroke is important. you could very easily and quickly go from heat exhaustion to stroke within a very short period of time. and people ignore the first stage of this. if you're fatigued and muscle weakness and not moving well, that's probably the heat is getting to you, your heart is pumping and working too hard, that's what tachycardia is. it is pumping blood to your system, but by the time you basically become neurologic changes, that's the difference between the two. that in heat exhaustion, you're perfect and fine. with heat stroke, you're affected by this.
9:59 am
that's when the heart starts to fail, you have to go to the emergency room. what we do in the emergency room basically will give you iv fluid and we slowly change the temperature to make sure the other organs are not affected. these are very dangerous. 675 people die every year as a result of complication of heat stroke. >> one of the reasons that -- one point he made that i want to emphasize, you can go if from heat exhaustion to heat stroke, that's a good reason not to hike alone. not to be out there alone on a hot day, especially underlying medical problems, if you're on those diuretics we talked about, if you have heart disease. go with a buddy, go with someone who can watch you, go where there is a cell phone area, you can make an emergency call. >> great point. >> i think a lot of times you're losing a lot of water without knowing because while you're sweating, all of that fluid is going out. that's when you get low blood pressure. >> carry a bottle of water with you too.
