of oklahoma and texas. we have a severe widespread risk today not just in the southern plains but as we head further north across portions of kansas and into iowa. you are looking at severe storms through out the day today. as far as additional rainfall goes take a look at the forecast totals. 9 numbers p additional rainfall. 40 inches across parts of mississippi and tennessee. flash flooding will be a big issue today yet again across south and the southern plains. high temperatures feeling summer like across parts of the eastern united states in the 80d and 90d out there. across northern plains a little cooler 60's and 70's to minneapolis. heather and ainsley let's head over to you. >> a manhunt is under kay after a police officer is killed in a cruiser. kelly wright is here with the developing story.

>> kelly? >> good morning. so far police have no suspects or witnesses or a motive for gunning down a house in new orleans' police office. police are investigating the murders looking for clues to help them find out who is responsible for gunning down the officer. the shooting happened while the officer was officer waudz working security detail keeping watch of a construction site of new town homes. the officer was shot while driving. a fellow officer discovered his dead collegiate 7:00 a.m. >> such a tragic loss in the department's history. we know the men and women worked just as hard as tirelessly as i always do to bring this could a

the national mall. they gathered for a memorial day concert. officers spotted a suspicious looking vehicle parked only a few blocks away from the capitol. they cordoned off the area searched the car and destroyed the pressure cooker. >> in a statement u.s. capitol police say uspc bomb squad safely disrupted the pressure cooker. they investigated the suspicious vehicle negative results and nothing hazardous found. terrorists have used pressure cookers in the past. boston marathon bombers created their bombs from a pressure
