3:00 am
well, hi friends and good morning, today is the 31st of may, 2015. i'm anna kooiman. the fox news alert, bowe biden has died of brain cancer at the age of 46. just days after his father spoke candidly about their relationship. >> by focusing on my sons i found my redemption. >> we look back at bowe biden's live and legacy as attributes pour in from both sides of the aisle. secretary of state john kerry has been helicoptered to a hospital after crashing his bicycle in france.
3:01 am
the presidential field gets bigger martin o'malley joins the democratic race and takes swieps -- swipes at the competition. >> the presidency is not a crown to be passed forth and back and forth between families. >> mornings are better with friends. good morning on this last day of may. we want to get right to that fox news alert. bowe biden has died after a long battle with brain cancer last night. >> the vice president and family sharing the sad news last night, as family and politicians from both sides of the aisle offer their support. >> such a sad moment for the
3:02 am
vice president and his family. beau biden was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. just like his father the 46 years old led a life of public service. he served in iraq in 2009. most recently he was delaware's attorney general, and just last year he announced his plans to run for governor in 2016. in a statement released by his father last night, joe biden said beau's life was defined by service to others. as a young lawyer he worked to establish the rule of law in war torn kosovo. he fought for the pawrlts and made it his mission to protect children from abuse. in the words from president obama, for all that beau biden achieved in his life nothing made him prouder, nothing made him happier, nothing claim a

fuller -- beau is survived by his wife and two children. what a sad moment. i can say i knew beau biden. this was a genuinely no kidding around close family. the father and the two brothers obviously the survivors of the 1972 auto crash that took the life of the vice president's first wife and his daughter who was young at the time. they really were tight. and a lot of political families pretend to be but this actually was a nice family. >> he would campaign for vice president joe biden. he would say things about his relationship with his father and the vice president would make sure he would try to come home for baseball games and family
3:04 am
outings to make sure that relationship stayed strong. >> i was talking with michaelly, one of the top lawyers onin delaware. he said beau biden was april extremely talented lawyer great family man and incredible guy. on may 17th joe biden was joking about his late son, beau. >> my yale law school son graduated very well from yale law school. my other son decided to go to penn. they are a year and a day apart in age. the one who graduated from yale had doors opened to him. the lowest salary back for him was $50,000 more than a federal

judge made. my other son, equally as th bright went on to be elected one of the youngest attorneys general in the history of delaware big headline after 2012 2012 biden, the most popular man in delaware dash beau. >> many are saying this speech by the vice president happening just two days before the public really found out that beau was actually at walter reed was actually a tribute to him. >> he's faced a couple of tough health issues. suffering a stroke. here to break it down dr. david samati. beau biden was facing brain cancer. let's talk about brain cancer a
3:06 am
little bit. how deadly it is. how treatable it is. what he was facing in this five-year siege of the disease. >> in 2010 he had a mild stroke which seems to be probably not related to what we're seeing here today. he recovered from that stroke. in 2013 he was diagnosed with this small mass brain tumor at surgery at md anderson. at that time -- >> that's a big cancer center in texas. >> absolutely. it's a big medical center specializing in cancer. the surgery did well for that and he recovered that and he was going well until this spring had another recurrence and that sometimes unfortunately can happen with these brain cancers. we see about 70,000 new cases of brain cancer in a year. 14,000 deaths from this type of cancer and when it comes back and when it recurs depending on what type of brain cancer the
3:07 am
prognosis is very poor. there's about 120 different types of brain cancer out there. sometimes, even benign masses because this skull has no room to grow unlike lung cancer stomach, places where there's room to grow with brain cancer you will have a lot of symptoms. he probably had headaches, nausea sometimes loss of consciousness, seizures. it's a really sad moment and it's unfortunate despite all surgical treatment, radiation and chemotherapy the prognosis is zmafle and year is usually about the time people will die. a lot of these things that we see with brain cancer it depends on the type of cancer the prognosis is very poor and surgery is the best way to treat it but sometimes the location the size all of these plays a role and sometimes you may not be able to get the entire cancer. that's when you have to do radiation and chemotherapy and,
3:08 am
of course any recurrence of the brain cancer has poor prognosis. >> how much of knew row vascular problems are inherited? we know there's a history there in the biden family. how much does family history play a role? >> it's a great question. if you look at the rick factors aneurysm is not on the risk. smoking plays a role. sometimes working in certain factories, oil factories or paint factories which i don't think he's been involved we know that he was in iraq for about a year or so but those are probably not major risk factors. we don't really know. it's unknown ideology. >> the final question is it true that brain cancer is not as susceptible to other cancers to chemotherapy? the brain does not take in the
3:09 am
chemotherapy as well as maybe other organs in the body? >> another excellent point. there's something call blood brain barrier and a lot of chemo therapies may not get to that part. that's absolutely right. that's why, surgery, if it can be receptive and your first surgery is the best chance that you have in getting margins, removing the entire cancer sometimes, depending on the location of these brain cancers, it's so hard to get to them because by removing a lot more you may paralyze somebody you may affect someone's speech. you may cause visual disturbances. the surgeon is working in a very narrow space, a difficult cancer and you want to remove as much as you can without affecting any kind of paralysis or motor or speech kind of defects. >> it's hard to imagine anything scarier. >> unfortunately, with a lot of brain cancers, it's almost a death sentence and we're not really there when it comes to good prognosis. >> but some folks do.
3:10 am
>> of course of course. talk about that i think if you have a headache and some symptoms and just comes don't ignore it because a lot of these can be prevented by getting the cat scan, mris when when you catch them early, you can cure them. now moving on to some other stories making headlines and another fox news alert. a scare overnight for secretary of state john kerry. the 71-year-old had to be flown via medical helicopter to a switzerland hospital after hurting his leg in a bicycle accident in france. the state department says he's stable and is expected to be okay. breaking overnight, at least four americans reportedly being held by rebels in yemen and rescue efforts have failed. "the washington post" saying the americans are in the capital which has been pounded by saudi air strikes. three of them are private sector workers. the other is a dual citizen. the prisoners are among dozens

of u.s. citizens who were unable to leave or chose to stay after the united states closed its embassy if you'll remember in february. and now to an extreme weather alert. texas still under water. more rain falling. adding to the flooding concerns the death toll from the devastating torms rises to 31. rescuers finding the bodies of two women near the blanco river and a man's body in dallas. thousands of volunteers continue to search for 11 people still missing after being swept away by rushing waters. overnight, mandatory evacuation orders were lifted in towns along the colorado river. and some visitors at the new one world trade center observatory observatory, have had to wait two hours outside night getting tickets in advance. it opened to the public this weekend and highlighted by the panoramic views of new york city and beyond. it's the tallest skyscraper in
3:12 am
the western hemisphere. it's a 42-second elevator right to the top. >> you were not intimidated snmpling i was getting a little dizzy up there. >> you were driving people over there. >> yeah exactly. more homicides, fewer arrests. it's the so-called herring ferguson effect. one leads to the other. is it bringing our country's crime rate up? our guest says yes it is. she thought it was a good idea to skip out on paying for a cab. she learn the hard way. crime doesn't pay. the unusual punishment just handed over by a judge.
3:13 am
3:14 am
one day, it started to rain and rain. water got inside and ruined everybody's everythings. the house thought she let the family down. but the family just didn't think a flood could ever happen. the reality is floods do happen. protect what matters. get flood insurance. call the number on your screen to learn more.
3:16 am
a new crime wave is sweeping across the united states of america as gun violence skyrockets from baltimore to los angeles. the consequences of what's being called the ferguson effect being felt in major cities as it appears the nation's two decade long crime decline may in fact be over. joining me now to discuss it is heather mcdonald fellow at the institute who coined that phrase the ferguson effect. these numbers are frightening and devastating in so many ways. look at baltimore, st. louis, chicago, los angeles, and even new york. now up in the double digits. we see 40 homicides in may in baltimore comparing to last year's numbers, and arrests are down there 58%.
3:17 am
what is this about, heather? >> peter, for the last nine months, this country has been in the grips of what i would deem a hysteria against cops. we've embraced the idea that the police are killers, they are the biggest threat against black men today. cops have gotten the message they should back off from policing. homicide of cops went up 89% in 2014. so cops are backing off of discretionary proactive activity arrests are down and the criminals have become emboldened. >> when you say we embraced it who is the "we"? >> the mainstream media, the university presidents talking about assaults on blacks and of course the president and former attorney general has well who
3:18 am
also have been quite vocal in alleging that policing indeed the entire criminal justice is racist that is a complete falsehood and incredible unfairness to the people who work to preserve public safety in inner city communities. >> the doj put out a study about ferguson. they said there was a pattern of racism with regard to certain behavior there. but with regard to the killing, there was no determination that that was race-based correct? >> to the opposite. they actually dmol issued the hands up don't shoot lie. it was an utter lie perpetrated by certain members of that community and yet the media still takes every allegation from people on the street of cop misbehavior as gospel truth. but the justice department was completely schizophrenic in its treatment of ferguson. >> how can this be reversed? what needs to be done to stop
3:19 am
the increase in homicides and increase the arrests so that people who are most vulnerable in the behinder -- inner city are kept safer? >> we should listen to the people in the inner city who want the cops. they want enforcement. number two, the media and the eleets have to send a message to the cops that they are supported. they are doing an incredibly hard job. most are not racially biased. they are there to help the good people in the community. >> you can read her thoughts in the wall street journal. happy to have you. does this license plate offend you? it has just been banned. the same dmv allows a pro union license plate. does that sound fair to you? and iowa revealing its frontrunner for 2016? which candidate is pulling ahead of the pack. straight ahead. you might be surprised.

hi everyone. good morning. time for some 2016 headlines. democrat martin o'malley heads to new hampshire today a day after announcing his presidential run in baltimore. the former maryland governor vows to take on wall street and rebuild the middle class. as for the republicans, scott walker is skill the frontrunner in iowa. he has a 7-point league even though he has not said he will run for president. rand paul and ben carson are tied. 5% for ted cruz. 4% each for chris christie and donald trump. how offended are you by this new york license plate? an appeals court says this choose life plate promoting
3:25 am
adoption could produce road rage could cause cause road rage. so the idea that you would oppose killing and approve of adoption is so offensive to new york that people with will go crazy and start pushing people off the road is that the idea? >> right. what's really offensive is that the new york dmv is censoring adoption plate and shutting it down. that's lied crust. clearly, that's no the issue. there's something deeper going on here. >> of course there is. it's political correctness run amok. let's take a look at some of the plates that have been approved by new york state.
3:26 am
union yes. if that's not promoting a political point of view then what is it? and cop chot. >> these are culturally sensitive issues. our country is at a new relations of police relations. the fact that new york dmv ayou allows a license plate that addresses that and shuts down and censors, the children first license plate which is a pro adoption message is absolutely ridiculous and it's unconstitutional. the first amendment does not allow that kind of picking and choosing. it does not allow that viewpoint of discrimination. >> here's judge rosemary puller. we conclude the dmv's policy of excluding completely controversial and political and social issues from the nonpublic forum of license plates based on concerns of pertaining to
3:27 am
potential violence and the perception of state endorsement. that's a convoluted way of saying choosing life is an act that will cause violence. that's insane. >> let's look at what we're talking about. a bright yellow license plate with smiling children's faces. to arbitrarily eliminate this kind of message when it allows other kinds of messages is completely unconstitutional. it under mines our free speech rights. a portion of these funds -- from these choose life license plates actually go to new york's safe haven program which allows unwilling mothers to drop off their babies no questions asked. this is a fantastic program. for this court to say that this
3:28 am
is going to incite violence or problems that's ridiculous. it under mines the first amendment completely. >> it's part of the theme where the left equates views it doesn't agree with violence in an effort to squel. them. still ahead, breaking overnight overnight. beau biden has died. he was 46 years old. the vice president has dealt with tragedy like this before but how important is it to turn to faith after losing a child? father jonathan morris joins us next. plus, she skipped out of paying her cab fare so the judge is making her walk for it. literally. the punishment does it fit the crime? we report. you can decide.

3:33 am
this month, he was hospitalized with cancer again and he leaves behind his wife and two children. >> michelle and i hum pli pray for the good plord to watch over beau biden and to protect and comfort his family here on earth. joe biden has relied on his faith to get through past tragedies such as the loss of his first wife and daughter in a car crash back in 2002. father jonathan morris is here to weigh in. what do you say to a man who loses two children? >> it's been my experience as a pastor is the greatest suffering anybody can have is the loss of a child. why? because it's so unnatural to outlive your own off spring and even losing a spouse a sibling, a parent as hard as it is to lose a child, and this is now his second child he's lost. he lost his first wife and to
3:34 am
see the pain of just knowing that his family his wife and two children are without a father right now. what impresses me is that in good times and the bad, joe biden has stuck with his faith. he hasn't lost it and that gives me great hope. sometimes when you turn to faith only in the hard times and you are not living it in the good times, well it doesn't give the strength and the comfort. he's also just to be full disclosure he's come into major conflict with the leadership of his church at times and he still even in the midst of that hasn't lost his faith in a loving and all providential god. i think that shows deep deep faith, even when you come into conflict with church teaching et cetera. >> that terrible accident in the 70s that took his first wife and his daughter was certainly tough on him. but he talked about this just a week or two ago and about how
3:35 am
his faith carried him through. let's listen. >> six weeks after my election my whole world was altered forever. while i was in washington hiring staff, i got a phone call. my wife and three children were christmas shopping tractor-trailer broadsided them and killed my wife and killed my daughter. and they weren't sure that my sons would live. many people have gone through things like that. but because i had the incredible good fortune of an extended family grounded in love and loyalty, imbued with a sense of obligation imparted to each of us i not only got help but by
3:36 am
focusing on my sons i found my redemption. >> this morning, it reminds us to hug other own children a little more tightly. >> what i'm impressed, what he chose to do was to get better rather than bitter through the midst of this incredible suffering. no one could imagine that suffering, but he chose to say i'm going to focus on the good that i have. i'm going to focus on god, on my two sons. he got better rather than bitter. >> clearly it looks like and you would understand better than i, he seemed to be coming to terms with the impending death of his son on that date in a very reflective way. obvious, he was an extremist for some time for the last week or two. to see him talking about his son and the experience in that way -- >> that's a great way to put it
3:37 am
peter. it's almost like a part of you is dying. he was watching it. if you listen to the voice of his son, it sounds just like joe biden's and over the last couple of months he's in the hospital he was coming to grips with part of himself dying. that's something that i think we have to do at some level because life is short for all of us. >> it is. and whatever our faith is we rely on people like you, father. >> and the with the great hope that there is life eternal and there is an encounter again, as much as it hurts the loss of temporal separation. >> that they will be reunited. >> on other stories making headlines on your sunday morning, in a few hours, the taliban five will be free to roam as a travel ban expires. they were ordered to stay within the borders of qatar for one year after the u.s. government struck a deal with the taliban

3:42 am
it gave me the power to overcome the urge to smoke. some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. some people had seizures while taking chantix. if you have any of these stop chantix and call your doctor right away. tell your doctor about any history of mental health problems, which could get worse while taking chantix or history of seizures. don't take chantix if you've had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. if you develop these stop chantix and see your doctor right away as some can be life-threatening. tell your doctor if you have a history of heart or blood vessel problems or develop new or worse symptoms. get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. use caution when driving or operating machinery. common side effects include nausea trouble sleeping and unusual dreams. i'm a non-smoker. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you.

people of the united states. >> o'malley is one of her biggest supporters. he even ran her 2008 campaign. what does the former governor need to do to stand a chance in 2016? joining me for the debate. good morning, ladies. thanks for joining us. >> i'll start with you o'malley has a tall order. even shared name recognition and fundraising would be a huge challenge compared to hillary clinton? >> absolutely. welcome to the race. i think it makes it a little more interesting and i think hillary clinton could use a worthy opponent and he is. you mentioned correctly that he does have a problem with name recognition which will affect his problem with fundraising. outside of baltimore, you know damned if you do damed if you don't, he did have a problem with zero tal -- tolerance, if he did with the police. he is also the best manager in
3:47 am
government and the most ignored candidate in 2016. he has to bridge that gap somehow and i think that it would make -- we're so long away from the primary and the general election that anything is possible. >> we'll talk about the connection to baltimore in a second. what is going to take for o'malley to really compete? we have his poll out. o'malley just 1% down there. so how will be able to stay relevant especially when he's got that record of major taxes, including taxing the rain? >> well, normally he would need to come out hard against hillary, but i think he's playing it safe which is probably a smart move on his point because if hillary becomes the frontrunner, the nominee, he has an opportunity to be either her vice president or have another position in her cabinet, and so i think he's kplag it -- playing it as a win-win, playing
3:48 am
it both ways if you will. i think that's his current strategy at the moment. we have this zero tolerance policy which did lower the crime rate but also widen the rift between baltimore and law enforcement. >> this issue that we're having with the police is not just intrinsic to baltimore, number one, and i think just to quote him. i'm not speaking for myself here but he think that problems goes beyond that and it's more about what's going on with the black youth today and race. so to his credit he's trying to make his record even in terms of what he did for baltimore first as mayor and then as governor of maryland where he's focused more on the education, what he did for entrepreneurship what he did for the economy. remember maryland when he was governor became the state that basically -- one of seven states that triple a bond when we were

in the recession. he has a strong record on his behalf and he's trying to push that forward and minimize the criticism. . i think he has a horrible record. he is a tax and spend guy. there isn't a thing he wouldn't tax from alcohol to vehicle registration. horrible job of school systems. he's been in maryland and baltimore for many years as a political leader and that city itself baltimore is absolute nightmare right now. >> i'm sorry, but we're going to have to leave it right there. thanks for your spirit this morning. in just a few hours, the taliban five will be free to go wherever they want. will they return to terror? just call it the text of death, a single message like this one could crash your entire iphone. the cyber guy is here with how to protect yourself. come on in.
