they stand on the stages at farms and debate but today in iowa republican candidates getting quite a reception with a twist. it was the first ever roast and ride hosted by joni ernst. a total of seven candidates participated. they got on their hogs and
3:19 pm
chowed down on hogs. >> reporter: and trying to cut pork in washington as well. senator ernst hopes this will take its place the annual roast and ride, six of the ten declared presidential candidates plus scott walker here. it started with a motor cycle ride came up to the expo in boone where folks got to partake in a pig roast and also rub shoulders with the presidential candidates. it also marked the first appearance on the campaign trail for rick perry since he declared for president on thursday. perry touting his 12 years at governor of texas as the sort of experience that qualifies him to be the president and commander in chief. let's listen to what he said. >> this is going to be a show me. don't tell me election. this is one of those where we stand and say what have you done where have you led. and let me tell you, nobody gave me a manual that said here's how you deal with the space shuttle

3:21 pm
adversary, that iran and isis are anned a adversary. >> reporter: heshe also won an interesting poll. when asked who they would like to see debate hillary clinton, fiorina came out on top. >> so i guess the roast and ride will be steak fry from here on in. >> reporter: that's right. it's hogs and hogs and you know the rest. >> looks like a lot of fun. john thank you. what a job they do in iowa right? >> an as you both know candidates campaigning in iowa today just a portion of those who have declared. the field is expected to grow larger still with as many as six others slated to make it official. but only ten will make the cut to port pay the in this year's first two debates. david hawkings is here now, senior editor for roll call. so we look the white house is the ultimate goal but what is the short term goal and is it the same for all the candidates?
3:22 pm
>> i think it is. the short term goal is to get on that stage in cleveland and then at the reagan library a month later when cnn has the debate. so appearing at the roast and ride is not so much about courting favor with the republican caucus goers of iowa although that's important, the importance is getting a couple seconds on your air, the importance is getting noticed and not messing unand trying to climb through this incredibly nick field of people. we're talking about 16 people. twice as many people running for the republican nomination than will be at the belmont stakes. falling out of the top ten means you still have about 3% of the vote. so incredibly packed together. >> you mentioned the belmont stakes. so i ask you then, you're talking about the air time they want to get on tv they want to
3:23 pm
be seen because it's about money. so how quickly are the weaker forces in this race run out of money? we're talking donations. >> well, i think they will start to run out -- it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. if they don't get to the debate they will be perceived as out of the hunt. if they don't get in the second debate they will really be perceived as out of the hunt and then the money will start to dry up. money begets support, support begets more money. so you have to sort of work all three things to try and be perceived as not a loser. with 16 people in the race and 10 of them getting on the stage, that means incredible almost half will not make it on to the stage and some of the ones who if the debate were today, i thought it was interesting in your piece, fiorina now would get on it the only woman in the race but we're talking about john kasich, a popular governor the most important state that
3:24 pm
there is for the republicans. george pataki, important governor of an important blue state. so big name in the party wouldn't make it. >> and you mentioned some of the big names. is it stair forfair to say some of the groups are funding these candidates not because they're the potential potus, but a potential political power player someone who can lobby for their interests? >> i suppose that's somewhat true. but i think at this point, they all have the dream, they're all statistically in the hunt. if you have 11% of the vote, if you're scott walker or jeb bush who is sort of at the top of the pack right now and what separates you from being off the debate stage is only about 8% of the vote support, so it's totally wide open. and at this point all the donations are going to people
3:25 pm
who the donors think could actually get the nomination. somebody else i should emergency, lindsey graham a signature united states senator who represents sort of the hawkish wing of the republican party. he would be below that threshold because right now he's only been in the race such a short period of time that he hasn't been in enough polls to get on. so by the fall presumably by august when this debate happens, i'm betting the whole thing will be shuffled totally different than the way it would look today. >> we'll hold you to it. we'll get you back then. david hawkings thank you so much. and want to let you know for more on the 2016 republican presidential race tune into fox news sunday tomorrow when host chris wallace sits down with recently declared candidate and former pennsylvania senator rick santorum. that is tomorrow only on the fox news channel. check your local listings for times. and coming up here we'll have a lot more on that foiled terrorist attack. that plot foreign attack this last week in boston it prompted
