"fox & friends" co-host anna kooiman has the latest from texas. >> motorcycle officer terry smith was caught by surprise shot while his back was turn not knowing what hit him. investigators say it happened when officer smith pulled over a driver in a routine traffic stop. he just sent the driver on their way and was talking to another scop cop on the scene, that's when someone drove by and opened fire. >> he was concluding that stop when he and a metro officer that was checking by with him heard a pop and shortly thereafter realized he had been shot. >> the 20-year police veteran and father of six undergoing surgery overnight. he is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery. investigators are now gathering surveillance video from cameras at nearby businesses hoping to track down the shooter. at this point, it's not clear if officer smith was targeted. houston officials also warning cops to be vigilant at all times

you are a fitness guy. it seems possible but very tough. braden what did you think about it when hunter asked about this idea? >> i thought it was crazy. >> but you are were going to try it anyway right? >> yeah. >> 40 miles last year. 57 miles this year hunter. how did you approach it? >> you know it was actually easier to come at it this year. last year it was so difficult because we had never done anything like it and no one had really done anything close to what we had to give us advice on it. it's more of kind of taking what came at it this year. this year i was training. i was carrying a weighted backpack to strengthen my core and my legs. this year it was actually easier to go after this walk. >> i understand every three miles getting checked out and i'm sure you are sore today. what do you know everyone to know about cerebral palsy? what you go through on a daily basis, braden?

>> i want everybody to know that it's hard to go through cerebral palsy on a daily basis like i do. >> i know you walk with -- you have a walker right, and you go around with braces. you are able to get around? >> yeah. >> wow. so you have your brother there with you, and then you are on his shoulders. 764,000 people have this hunter and what do you want people to take away and what do you think you accomplish by doing this? getting the national spotlight and doing 57 miles? >> we wanted to reach people and tell them about the disability and tell them, you know the struggles that braden has to go through and also show them things that we can do to make his life better. things that he may need that we need to make accessible to him. i believe we can do that but we have to tell people about it. >> i don't blame you. it's way too early.

they will be flexible. they will transfer chains of command and sort of adapt to changing circumstances, and i think this is a critical factor in sort of american successes. >> why did you want to write the book right now? >> well, i think it's interesting. ever since i was a youth, i've always been interested in military history and i think a lot of young people are interested in how they would -- how they would handle themselves you know when the moment of crisis arrives. when the bullets start flying how would you act? and i think a lot of -- you know especially young men, think -- think about this and i've always -- i've always wondered and from that sort of question that i sort of wrote the book. >> that's such a good point because throughout history there have always been people lining

six police officers -- remember she didn't just charge them with killing of this guy. she charged them with the murder of this man. the defense attorneys for the police officers now say she's got to back out of the case. they say quote mrs. mosby herself is integral part of the story and as such a central witness. in the charges related to the initial arrest and detention of mr. gray mrs. mosby herself has become essentially exculpatory evidence. this is a case the witness and prosecutor are one in the same. the prosecutor's office says they will not litigate the case in the media. they're going to do it in the courtroom. in the past she's been -- they say look you've got a conflict of interest. your husband is representing that particular area. you've got to back out. she's not going to back out. >> they're saying how are you going to prosecute the officers you told to go there and patrol

baghdad. in and around the baghdad area. 20 people were killed in a series of bombings. the worst as you mentioned was at a restaurant in eastern baghdad where at least at this point we hear 10 were killed. it went off near the restaurants and also several shops. basically targeting areas, public areas where there's a lot of people going to those locations. also two other separate bombings in western baghdad. a vegetable market was targeted and a commercial street and area. a lot of people going to those places. innocent civilians, men, women, children. at least six were kill there had. i say at least because sometimes we see numbers escalate in the hours after that. of course dozens were also injured. these are the worst bombings since several hotel bombings or car bombs went off outside of

mentality a cop needs in a situation like this? dr. keith ablow, good morning. what what's your assessment? seems a shift on the streets with how teens and people react to police. what's going on? >> there's a fracture americans place properly in authority in police officers. when i was a kid growing up if a police officer showed up you were quiet, answered questions. no trampling on your rights was necessarily allowed by any means. you did pretty much what you were told. not so now. things have shifted. that's a shift encouraged by some leaders. >> when you say some leaders, who are you talking about? >> look i don't think the president or former attorney general did anything to help people out when they seemed to

side with folks other than police or mayor of new york. these messages are powerful. they're heard by young people who may think of it as a cause celeb to resist police officers. these guys are well intentioned indeed. public servants is to quiet down answer to them do as you're told. >> the police chief hired you to talk about situations and how to get better at them. what should be the mind set coming into a situation like the pool fights happening that day? >> yeah i say this. listen in these times in such situations you've got to stay very close to guidelines that we're teaching you. we're going to teach you then again. there's a heightened sense you may feel as a police officer. these guys are tough.

they're willing to risk their lives for other people. right now the streets are more dangerous because to some extent people have it in for police. >> we see that across the nation where police officers are on high alert. we've seen those shot and killed as well. when a police officer goes in there's a psychological state he's dealing with. different so than maybe in years past. good insight in terms of how everyone should be viewing this now and the conversation. what do we need to know? >> we need to know things for police officers are different because the bottom line is it use to come with the job, the benefit that respect of the community was yours. you may not make millions of dollars, but you wore this badge. people admire had the or were thankful. now there's a psychological moment here police officers need help perhaps. departments need it in order to

faith, marriage sexuality. what is someone saying you did wrong? >> the complaint is that i was insensitive and didn't care for people who not necessarily share the viewpoints i have as a christian minister. so when i was in counselling sessions in my office share ago my viewpoint after being asked my viewpoint, it wasn't appreciated, and they disagreed. this individual young thatnavy officer. he never did it directly. it was done behind my back very quietly. then i was relieved and detach add. >> i read one news account that the young navy officer you were talking about was your assistant, married gay officer, upset with your views on same sex relationships. he was asking you a number of questions about it then next thing you know you get this

complaint, right? >> at last correct. he wasn't a trained chaplain religious programs specialist. he was an administrative assistant a waiting orders. they're assigned temporarily to our office. often times being in close proximity, he would hear conversations that are private and confidential and did not like those either. >> kelly, you're representing the chaplain because essentially he's in trouble for believing what his faith tells him is true. >> exactly. what his denomination that ordained him as a minister endorsing organization as a chaplain believes. he did exactly what chaplains are supposed to do minister to people answer questions in 101 counselling of what the bible says is of what their faith says. in fact this was -- what's happened to this good man is violation of constitution and military regulations but

congress passed a law a year ago to make clear chaplains were protected from these types of attacks. unfortunately they're refusing to follow law at this point or at least the captain who did this is. we're hoping the navy will overturn this and we'll get back to following law in the navy. >> that a would be a step in the rights direction. chaplain i know your business is looking at the bible for inspiration during troubling times like this. how are you consoling yourself? it seems like the may have inavy is out to get you at this point. >> i don't know that one captain represents the entire navy. there's other multiple leader ship failures. i'm staying in prayer and believing i'm doing the will of god being true to my calling, church assembly of god. personal feelings can come from
