more now on one of our top stories tonight. hillary clinton getting personal during her campaign kick off speech. she described her mother's difficult upbringing talking about her grandfather and father while vowing to fight for ordinary americans. will it work? we welcome our panel. great to see you. let me start with you, it really was a personal hillary. she's so famously private and protective of her family. much more than almost we've ever seen before. can this new hillary connect? >> it was billed as going to be something very personal.

a dallas police chief says a gunman came extremely close to killing several officers this morning in an all out assault on police headquarters. they say the suspect opened fire on police from an armored van which also contained explosives. police say a sniper eventually shot him and bomb squads were able to detonate the explosives which were filled with nails and screws apparently designed to maim their targets. scary stuff. let's bring in the former deputy assistant director of the counterterrorism of the fbi. this is really scary stuff. i mean the van where the suspect was found dead caught fire sending ammunition rounds going off inside the vehicle. clearly this man wanted someone dead today. we have to applaud the efforts from police to prevent him from getting away and hurting anyone else other than himself.
1:31 pm
>> you're absolutely right. if you think about what he said to the police before he was killed. he was accusing them of accusing his son of being a terrorist. it kind of points out why director colmy a few weeks ago was calling the police in america the first line of defense against terrorism. now you can see when you're the first line of defense, you will be the first to be attacked. there's going to be more developing here and we'll have more information. that's an interesting statement he made. it may indicate through some other investigation that's been ongoing out there. >> talked about ongoing, the ongoing hostility against men and women in blue. this story could not shed a scarier light on what's going on nide. some patrol cars had bullet holes in the cars. i'm not sure those who always are there ready to criticize for

the maximum security prison in upstate new york. hundreds of officers have been involved in the manhunt for them there has been no sign of that pair and folks in the region they continue to be on edge. meanwhile, a female prison worker charged with helping those inmates make that daring escape. the very latest on that case and the search. peter doocy live in dannemora, new york which is right outside the prison wall. >> we've known these two fudge fugitive murderers tunnelled under the walls but we didn't know how until now. they used hack saws and drill bits allegedly provided by joyce mitchell. she could go from full time prison employee to fulltime prison resident in a matter of months. we saw mrs. mitchell in court last night to face charges for bringing contraband in.
1:34 pm
the complaint says she provided the materials on may first, well over a month before matt and sweat urin the wind. she pled not guilty. it could mean seven years behind bars for her. mitchell's husband has not been arrested. authorities are interested in what he may have known or maybe if he even helped. as for the manhunt, no productive leads today. authorities seem very confident the fugitives are in a concentrated area. close to the prison probably in the very thick forest that's tough to see out once you're about 30 steps in. they're candid saying no confirmed sightings of either man yet. one full week after the guards were surprised to see their cells were empty. and last night, long rain storm, all authorities would say is they assume these two are tired and wet and cold. it seems the trail has gone cold. we get a sense the two fugitives

1:36 pm
if any, these people had. and where they were going to be heading. now they may know that they probably had to stay in the area. and just because we haven't heard from them may indicate enough more than they made the good judgment to get in out of the weather and go into a vacated summer type cabin. that wouldn't be surprising it's happened before. >> let's talk about joyce mitchell. she was a prison tailor then she befriended the men. she actually gave them hack saw blades a punch and a screw driver bit. she's accused of being the get away driver. she didn't do it she chickened out. obviously the cops will try to strike the deal. she was so involved with how they actually dug out of their cells. you know what are they going to get from her as far as their whereabouts? >> part of what they've gotten from her is why they're still
1:37 pm
focused on that area in upstate new york. the fact we've heard nothing to put them anywhere else is evidence enough that they're probably still in upstate new york. at some point in time they're going to need transportation they're going to make a break for it and try to get out of there. that's why this investigation is going to take a proactive turn and probably already has. they'll want to make sure they'll get hikers campers, back packers, trail heads where cars are parked. anywhere they need to be to try to anticipate these people might show up in an attempt to get out there. >> i don't know her attorney i would imagine if you're defending this woman you will try to strike some sort of plea deal. she potentially faced seven years in prison. she has pleaded not guilty. is her lawyer making the right move here? it seems like she's essentially deeming herself some long prison time or she could talk and spare
1:38 pm
herself? >> that's why i think she has been talking and probably providing in their estimation everything she does know. that's why i think they're focusing on upstate new york. >> not guilty really? is the jury going to believe that? >> well, we'll soon find out what a jury believes. we know what we might think about this. i think that what's important right now is that we all realize that her activities and the choices she made are putting people in danger. these people are out there and the police are doing something smat that is one of the most dangerous things police can do. >> if god forbid they hurt one person out there or a hair on somebody's head god forbid kill another person she should be charged and brought in for some sort of homicide charge because she assisted. >> this will be a lot more serious if that happens. we'll all in our thoughts and prayers hope it doesn't and these people come out of this safely. >> great having you on to talk about these two tops we appreciate it.
