where a man walked in where they were having a sort of a prayer service or a bible service at a church there at emanuel ame church in the downtown area. a man walked in opened fire and police have confirmed there in that news conference they've now confirmed that there were nine people dead inside of that church. they say there are survivors. they're not saying how many survivors at this point. but they say there are some survivors. nine people dead. they're not identifying the victims at this point. they're still looking for the man. the gunmen is on the run. he is believed to be a 21-year-old man. with sandy blond hair, clean-shaven slender, small build, blue jeans, timberland boots, and a gray sweatshirt. this happened once again around 9:00. so he has been on the loose now for a couple of hours. and the police chief there saying he understands that the community is upset. clearly upset. a very heartbreaking situation with nine people dead.

inside a very historic church there in downtown. but what he is asking the community 20 do which is very hard just a couple of hours after this happened is to take that anger, and all of those emotions that come from being upset and trying to turn that into some action to finding this person who did this unthinkable act. nine people dead. right now they said they're tracking several different leads. they have federal agencies in there to track all the leads, all the efforts and resources that they possibly can to get in there, identify this victim and find the man. once again, they're saying this 21-year-old man, sandy blond hair clean-shaven slender, small build, blue jeans, timberland boots, and a gray sweatshirt that have i helicopters hovering overhead right now with lights looking for this man. they don't know if he is still there in the area or possibly he has fled at this point. they have prayer services going on. people outside praying for the victims and their families. of course a very difficult time

this is a fox news alert. i'm jackie ibanez in new york. we continue to follow events following a massive shooting at a church in charleston south carolina. a very sad night there. city officials are now confirming the extent of the tragedy. nine people have been killed. and what police describe as a hate crime. so here is what we know so far. it happened around 9:00 wednesday night at the historic emanuel ame church in the downtown area. a prayer service was under way at the time. the shooting was then followed by a bomb threat not far away. at this hour, the gunman remains at large. city officials held a press conference earlier this hour. here is what they had to say. >> at 9:05 this evening, we received a call of a shooting that occurred at the church here

on calhoun street. when officers arrived, they found a number of victims inside and we had also individuals that were transported to the musc emergency trauma center. as the investigation continued, we were able to determine that there were eight deceased individuals inside of the church. two individuals were transported to the musc. one of them has died. so at this point, we have nine victims in this heinous crime that has been committed. right now we are working with all of our partners. we have members of charleston the charleston county sheriff's department sled the fbi and many other, the atf and many other federal agencies are here. we have a unified command that is working this investigation. we have investigators that are

out tracking leads that are coming in. and we will continue to do that until we find this individual who has carried out this crime tonight and bring him to justice. we are looking for a white male approximately 21 years old, sandy blond hair. and he obviously is extremely dangerous. what we're asking is if anyone in the community has information about this individual that he contact law enforcement immediately. we have all the resources that are available to us not only locally, but from the state as well as federal agencies. we have resources that are being flown in from washington, d.c. that will help us not only track leads, but also work this investigation. and i can say that we will put all effort we will put all resources, and we will put all of our energy into finding this individual who committed this crime tonight. and as i said earlier, this is a
