the horrific moments happening inside the church. >> our own ainsley earhardt is live in charleston and has been following all these breaking developments for you at home. >> reporter: we're learning that he is going to be in court today. this community, i should say, the chan family -- charleston family is trying to move past this. nine people were murdered here on wednesday night in this church. the suspect is going to be in court today for a bond hearing. let me tell you about what happened in this church just moments before those bullets started to fly. there's some snapchat video from one of the victims posted this on line showing a gunman in the bible study sitting around that table, venting eventually after an hour of bible study about african-americans. he said you are taking over your country. i have to do what i have to do. he pulls out a gun and he kills nine people inside this church. what's ironic is that the church and reverend pinckney-week-old

him which is not -- welcomed him which is not surprising. >> he told me that the black people was taking over the country and that the -- that he wanted it to be segregation. >> all right. that was one of his friends, but the state senator just said it doesn't surprise him because this church welcomed everyone. we're being told by the uncle that the dad gave the suspect a gun for his 21st birthday in april. that was just two months ago. the mom, according to some of his relatives, was not happy about that. wanted to take the gun from him. police were sent to his mom's house, which is in columbia south carolina my home time two hours away they did find anti african-american videos in his home and skin head paraphernalia. and he had wanted to plan a civil war and had been planning this for six months. we're not sure why that friend

never went to authorities about that. others are telling us he was an avid drug user. he was frequently popping pills. he was picked up in february for having suboxen. there will be a bond hearing at 2:00 here to the detention center he's waking up this morning behind bars. what's interesting is now suddenly a bunch of his former roommates and friends are speaking and one of the people that he said he was going to kill a lot of people said that he told him, the original target was going to be the nearby college of charleston and not the church. so you wonder why he changed that. also if you were tuning in yesterday at this time we had a live press event with the chief of police down there who showed the car and the picture and we showed that on the air, and, you

know we originally surmised that's got to be a wig or something like that. that was actually the bowl cut hair cut that he had and the sweatshirt that he was wearing, apparently one of guys who knew him, this joey meek guy recognized this stained sweatshirt because if you notice above his -- on his right shoulder that's a big stain, he got that when he was working at a landscape company. >> and ainsley alluded to this as well, he would been playing a civil war and said he was going to commit suicide after doing this awful, awful thing that he did out of racism and out of hate. you know you see that he was actually in trouble with the law beforehand. he was brought to the attention -- he was walking around a mall asking bizarre questions to people there. it put him in a spotlight to police. >> how many people work here? what time do you close? >> and with those drug charges later on and he was under a lot

of pressure to get a job. >> he dropped out of ninth grade. he was found with some drugs on him. including a drug that helps you get off opium. he had that same hl low -- hollow look as adam lansa. >> he says when i knew him before he never talked about race or any problem he had, but he talked about -- he talkede was angry over the trayvon martin shooting and wanted something to spark up a race war again, if i'm doing this i'm making sure sure that the authorities know that this guy is a little bit dangerous and he's got a gun. >> we heard a lot about this this wreched killer and we would like to focus a little bit on those killed. >> and we're looking at this. this is extraordinary. this is video from inside the church. as you can see down in one of

the meeting rooms before he started killing everybody inside. it was shot by the youngest victim. she posted this on snapchat. her name tywanza sand evers. what's interesting is -- he's the lone white person in this room. what's interesting about this dylann roof and it was not unusual, apparently for people to just drop in for prayer meetings because they had so many tourists in the area and somebody came in and they said i would like to stay and they would welcome them with open arms. >> tywanza sanders was actually a poet. he wanted to have his poems published before his death. >> dylann roof specifically asked when he came in hey, i would like to see the reverend could you introduce me to the reverend and he sat right next to him the whole time sat through the prayer meeting for 45 minutes and stood up and said i got to kill you all. >> in the show we're looking to

speak with the florist to called in the tip to police. she watched fox news and she heard the description, saw what was going on had been up praying the entire night about this because she was in church on her own time the night before. she saw the car and thought could this be it and ended up pulling off the road and got back on the highway and followed him. we're going to speak with her. what a brave act to end up with this guy now in the hands of authorities after killing nine people. her actions are heroic. >> you sawk about nine dead three lived, including a five-year-old and one woman who was told go tell everybody about what happened here. he walks in at 8:00 kills at 9:00 14 hours later we get him 245 miles away. we mentioned the florist is going to be joining us to talk about that and also bring up his sister his sister amber called

her tips led directly to the suspect's capture. joining us debbie dills. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> debbie when you were driving, you remembered hearing something in the morning. what did you hear? where did you hear it and what did you see on the road? >> actually watching fox news "fox & friends" yesterday morning, i had paid close attention actually the night before when i actually heard about the church shooting and my heart went out to those people there, and i don't know why i paid closer attention. i'm calling it divine intervention. i believe god had a plan in it and as i was driving to work i was running late. i actually seen -- i look over and i seen the car and it looked familiar to me and i wondered why, now as i look back over it was because of the pictures i

seen on the news. i went past him and i seen the south carolina tag on the back of it and i seen the white tag on the front of his car. and the bowl hair cut. >> see, that was the key. yesterday morning, we didn't know what to make of that hair. we thought maybe it was a disguise it might have been a hair net, but that was his actual hair cut. so you pull alongside him and you realize hey, that's him, as you are driving down highway 74 so what did you do? >> well, i got a little nervous, i'll be honest with you. i'm not a -- i'm not a hero and i'm not brave. i got a little nervous, but i just started talking to the lord about it and then i got off of the exit to come on into kings mountain and i started thinking about it, what if it really was him, i wasn't sure it was him, i didn't want to get anybody else in trouble or be overreacting so i called my boss and he said well we need to call somebody and he got on the phone with the

kings mountain police and he stayed on the phone with me and he told me to get back on the 74 bypass and that's what i did i was able to catch up with him and get right behind him and get his tag number and the kings mountain police and the shelby city police caught him within a matter of minutes and it was him. >> yeah it was, debbie. i understand you went back on and you followed him for more miles. when you looked in the car and saw him besides noticing the hair cut, did he look nervous, like he was on the run? did anything strange occur to you? >> no he wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary. he looked like a very young -- young man. >> debbie you are a hero. i know you are not saying you are one, but there was such unrest around the country after hearing that nine people were killed by this man in a church while they were praying.

do you ask god why me? why here? why me god? why am i the hero? >> oh, i'm not the hero. god is the hero. he just used me. if we are a willing vessel you can use us but we got to open up our hearts and our minds and i don't know why he chose me and he chose todd and he chose us to do this, but he's got to be glorified in all, in everything, he's got going to get the florry one way the other and i hope he's pleased with me. i want him to be pleased with me author than anything else. >> well, debbie you know the police caught him about 240 miles away from the shooting site in charleston south carolina. he would have driven by hundreds if not thousands of cars but you were the one who actually picked up the phone and called your boss todd and said what should i do? it looks like -- i think you would say that god put you in

>> we're also learning a lot more about the innocent victims whose lives were taken too soon. >> ainsley earhardt who used to live in that neighborhood joins us live right now from charleston south carolina. ainsley. >> reporter: hey, steve. it's so surreal, all of my friends in charleston and my family in south carolina we can't believe this is happening in our state because it is such a tight community and such a community that just rallies around one another and loves one another. i did live on smith street which is a few blocks that way when i interned at the nbc affiliate. this is the church behind us where the shootings happened on wednesday. nine people killed here. you can see the flowers and wreaths and white bows representing those lives that were lost. today will be a bond hearing for the suspect. he is back here. he spent the night in jail here in charleston last night and we'll have a bond hearing at 2:00. we'll be reporting on that. we talked a lot about the suspect. let's talk about these victims because they were the ones doing the right thing. i want to start with the

reverend clementa pinckney, he was 41 years old, a state senator. leaves behind two kids and a wife. also there was reverend that rhonda coleman singleton. she was the mother a speech therapist. she was the track coach at goose creek, a local school here. her son attends southern charleston university. his entire baseball team met last night for a prayer vigil. >> love never feels. tonight, lord let him feel the love of jesus, when he feels the love of jesus, then he's feeling the love of his mother. >> another victim i want to talk about is taiwan za sanders, he died trying to save the live of his aunt. he was 26 years old. s his loved ones that he was trying to protect is susie

them as well our nation is praying for them. i think it is time to take a fresh look at church security across our country. it's not the churches that we grew up in any more. we do have very real threats as we've seen across the country and i think it's time to look afresh and anew at how we protect our congregations, our children because it's not going to change in the near future. unfortunately, it's probably going to get worse. i think it is time to look. >> okay tim, somebody who is in the pulpit every sunday is bishop jackson. he had this to say about that yesterday. >> i would urge pastors and men in these churches to prepare to defend themselves. it's sad but i think we got to arm ourselves, at least have people in the church who are prepared to defend the church when women and children are attacked. >> one of the problems is that churches for the most

vulnerable. >> that is correct. i agree with the mass -- pastor. i have the privilege of traveling across the country and meeting some of these great pastors and to be honest i don't want them to have to worry about the security of their church and packing heat themselves themselves. i would love for good men and women across the country to rise up and help protect their congregations. there's some training involved but it starts with the condominium, a commitment of the leadership the recognition of the problem. i think the good news is across the country when good men and women stand, there can be some great results because they will be more engaged. >> that's true. it's pretty much the same thing in the schools. should we arm the teachers or should we get armed guards to protect the school? if you had to make a choice between training pastors and getting private security to work it what would you do? >> i think brian there's a good middle ground there. i think there is a need for professional security at some of these churches but i also think

there's a grassroots efforts within the church that can make the churches safer. i like to train congregations that church security is a team sport. everybody son the church security team. when you shift their mind sets then you have more resources brought to the battle. we need professional security and now's the time to do that. i think there's needs to be a fundamental mind set, churches are no longer places where we can no longer have security. it has to change. >> of course it would be great if they could hire private outfits. a lot of them don't have money. >> your hands are closed -- your hands open and your eyes closed. i think private security may be the answer.
