"hannity" starts here and now. welcome, authorities claim alleged south carolina church shooter dylann roof has confessed to killing people. roof appears briefly via a video link for a bond hearing. the judge began the procedures by offering a statement to the community. watch this. >> we have victims, nine of them. but we also have victims on the other side. there are victims on this young man's side of the family. nobody would have ever thrown them into the whirl wind of events they have been thrown into. we must find it in our heart at some point in time not only to help those that are victims, but to also help his family as well. >> the judge then opened up the courtroom to representatives of the victims' families if they wanted to offer a statement.

as you can imagine, it was extrooex extremely emotional. watch this. >> we welcomed you wednesday night in our bible study with open arms. you have killed some of the most beautiful people that i know. every fiber in my body hurts. and i'll never be the same. tywanza sanders was my son, but he was my hero. he was my hero. but as we say in bible study, we enjoyed you. but my god have mercy on you. >> i will never comfort her ever again. i will never be able to hold her

again. but i forgive you. and have mercy on your soul. it hurts me. it hurt a lot of people. i forgive you. and god forgives you. >> earlier today roof's family offered a statement reading in part. words cannot express our shock, grief, and disbelief as to what happened that night. we are devastated and saddened by what occurred. we offer our prayers sympathy for all of those impacted by these events. joining us now with reaction radio show host dr. gina louden and dr. robert jeffers. al to me pretty powerful people would say they forgive him. i don't know -- i'm a christian, pastor i don't know if i would have that level of forgiveness. i know that's the teachings of christ. him on a cross and he said that.

forgive them they know not what they do. it's harder in real life. here's the question we have. he goes into a bible study on a wednesday night. even said that they were so nice to him he almost didn't do it. he knew he was going to kill these people. we're talking about getting in the mind of an evil mad man. now it raises questions, because i wouldn't be surprised if an insanity defense is brought up. he walks in, sits there with an hour with the intention of killing them. he wipes them out one after another. let's one survivor go to tell the world in all of this. are we dealing with evil are we dealing with a chemical imbalance? is this a psychiatric issue? he indicated on facebook and friends that he had these evil racist beliefs. what are we deal ing with here if we're going to get do the bottom of this? >> look over the last few days people have been trying to attribute these heinous acts to

everything from infusufficient gun laws to fox news. when he said he was surprised at how kind these people were it made me wonder if he had been in a church before. if his parents had taken him to a church. every parent's first responsibility is to teach his child that there is god. and that god has certain commands that we're obligated to obey. unfortunately, here it looks like that wasn't a part of dylann 's life. that's a tragedy. >> we have all these past incidents where columbine, sandy hook later on we find out these kids are on psychotropic drugs, some people make a connection. there was an arrest we believe for an opiate substitute.

that in and of itself can be addictive and has properties that some people act out this way by using the drug. do you believe evil is a factor? is this biochemical in nature? is this somebody we should have realized early on based on his facebook postings and rantings and ravings to family did they have an obligation to tell authorities? how do you see the mind of a mad man here? >> i see it very simply evil causes murder. not only does evil cause murder denial of evil causes murder. we have created such -- >> when you say evil are you talking about principalities of darkness evil -- >> i really am. >> good and evil? >> absolutely. i not only believe that. i believe it's the missing link. you have to remember how many socialio paths function every single day in society in your business my business in every realm of society. they don't do this. what's the missing link?

no psychologist can give an answer to why certain people snapped. a pill isn't going to fix it. counseling session isn't going to fix it. we have to recognize the acts of evil in our culture today. >> it seems wide spread. dr. jeffers, he had on his facebook page -- we can go back and see all the signs that were missed. that happens almost every time. he is displaying the apartheid flag of south africa. he has another flag of white ruled rodeeshia before it became sim zimbabwe. his roommate said he wanted to star a start a civil war. he said he was going to do something like this. are we missing the signs and symptoms? >> i saw a tragic headline in the washington post that said a

life that went quietly off track. look i don't want to blame the parents. i'm sure they are experiencing tremendous heart ache. every parent has the ability to cultivate his child's heart. if we leave our child's heart alone they become overgrown with evil and sin. yes, people missed the sign in his life. i agree with our other guest. evil is real. you know jesus called satan a murderer. jesus interacted with satan. if satan and demons aren't real then jesus was a paranoid schizophrenic. i believe in mental illness that leads to some evil but i believe in many more cases, it is evil that leads to mental illness. >> well put. >> the chicken and the egg. doctor why in so many instances do we see psychotropic drugs have been used?

in this there was an indication there might have been an opiate addiction of some kind. >> i'm not a psychiatrist i have spent 20 years studying psychology. i can tell you that it is -- i would say, sean that really the denial of evil in our culture has led to this more than any other factor. if you look at the statement of his friend he said he knew he was threatening all these things. he had a plan. told people he was going to do this. his friend's response? i don't judge people so i didn't tell anyone. we have political correctness that caused this. >> do we have to look at the medications? do we have to look how we're treating people that are showing signs, that they're not coping properly in life? are we overprescribing? do we even know the real side effects of these drugs on certain individuals? because the rate of incidence of

these shooters and the drug use and the connection is undeniable. i don't know in this case. i wouldn't be surprised. do we have to look at that? >> go ahead. >> pardon me. >> i think god gives medication to heal some illnesses. i think like you, when our other guest said deny the reality of evil you want to use medicine to solve every probablelem and it doesn't. >> the diagnostics and statistics manual could render all of us 50% of our society, labelled mentally ill. then what are the implications? because people want to medicalize it and say it's a sickness. the doctors want to make a buck. the psychologists want to say they can solve it. they want to politicize this. soros has put a lot of money

welcome back to "hannity" brian williams has been banished to msnbc. this comes months after he was discovered to have greatly exaggerated and misreported multiple stories. after an extended period of time out of the public eye. brian williams came out of hiding. he broke his silence as he spoke to matt lauer about his demotion. >> i was reading these newspaper stories, not liking the person i was reading about. i would have given anything to get to the end of the story and have it be someone else. but it was about me. it had to have been ego that made me think i had to be sharper, funnier, quicker than anybody else. this was clearly ego driven the

desire to better my role in a story i was already in. all i can tell people is hold me to account, judge me by as harsh a standard as you wish. many already have. that's fair. >> joining me now with reaction tucker carlson, kirsten powers and charles gaspariono. i found this painful to watch. >> i think he did as good as you could do. he did too much psychology. it might have helped himself if he said i lied and screwed up and ended it right there. >> you know what i think the reason he didn't say it. i think when he said it he thought he was lying.

a..ase indonesia and swore to yourself you would never see in your country. >> i accidently ingested some of the flood water. i became very sick with dysentery. our hotel was overrun with gangs. i was rescued in the stair well of a five star hotel in new orleans. >> tucker i'm trying to analyze this. and none of what he said there is true. it's provably false in every case. so as you analyze this is it just that his ego got the best of him, the same failing every human being has? >> magnified. it's like watching a sting tape. it's watching man unclothed in a bad way. it's sad. i don't want to watch it again. it makes me feel sad for him. tv is bad for your soul because it makes you focus on you. anytime the focus is on you it's not good for you. unless you have a strong family

and a lot of people to ground you you end up becoming a pompous jerk. >> there's a tight rope you walk. it's news. i think if he was to be real honest he was trying -- he would say i was trying to be entertaining in doing that. i lied. and that's what he was doing. that's the sort of -- that's the tight rope that we all walk. >> i guess that's the ego part kirsten, right? he wanted to make himself bigger than he was? >> that's exactly it. i think maybe the reason he wanted to do that he doesn't have as much reporting experience as his predecessor. we have associated our evening anchors have been previously been people who were in war zones. maybe he felt insecure about it. al the one thing, criticism i will make. i think he should be doing interviews outside of nbc. i don't think you go and get --

then word got back that it wasn't yours, it might have been a friend of ours that may have been hit. i remember just sitting there in stunned silence because he's a friend of both of ours. i listened to him -- i thought that interview was painful. you've been in war zones. i don't know why there's a compulsion for people to build themselves up and put them in stories. his helicopter was not hit by an rpg or an ak-47. you have been in the situations more than anybody i know. what do you say? >> well i think it's nice brian williams has a job at msnbc. i used to work there myself. >> those were the dark days of your life. >> well i'm glad he's got a chance to rehabilitate himself. i have a different perspective because my job as you know has been to keep company with heroes soldiers sailors

airmen, marines. i did war stories a documentary did about real heroes who are or were journalists. ernie pyle joe calway. roupert murdoch's dad in tripoli. you don't have to be a person who wears a helmet to be a hero. the classical definition of a hero is a person that puts him or herself at risk for the benefit of others. my heroes don't wear spandex suits or capes, they wear dog tags and they go to work in harm's way every single day. i seen a lot of that in his war. >> i agree. your heroes are my heroes i've met many of them on the road with you. how many times have you been to iraq and afghanistan? i can't count. >> 57. >> 57 times. so he -- i watched him -- i

think what was so painful is i think he recognizes -- i almost got the impression he didn't mean for this to happen. he was embellishing yes, was he telling the truth? no. was it a conscious effort to build himself up. i didn't get that sense for some reason. i got the sense that things got out of hand for him. what do you say to him? you're a guy that does put his life on the line for others and has his whole life. >> here's the difference. instead of inserting himself in an event that didn't happen -- all he had to do was to report accurately on what was going on. okay. so one of the journalists i was with happens to be the only journalist in this war to be decorated for heroism. we've got footage of t. chris jackson was our cameraman for fox news war stories in afghanistan in 2008. in fact some days of your life you don't forget the day you

were almost killed. august 3rd, 2008. chris jackson was my cameraman. he was blown up by an iud in front of us. wounded in action. burned shrapnel wounds and somehow managed to get himself up the hill after he put himself out. forced open the front door of the humvy. he pulled a soldier out. chris jackson is the only journalist in this entire war, over 8,000 of us to be decorated with a medal. >> you're okay with him getting a second chance. that's your bottom line? >> look you know what? you've had second chances, i've had second chances. he's not a hero. i know real hero they're not full of ego. chris jackson is one of the humblest man i know. joining us now more
