tv Sunday Housecall FOX News June 21, 2015 12:30pm-1:01pm PDT
12:30 pm
i'm arthel ney develop time now for sunday health call. >> welcome to every. joining us is dr. mark seigel. >> and also chairman of urology and chief of robotic surgery. happy father's day. >> good to see you. >> and father's day to everybody out there. it happens to coincide with men's health month. this is a time for raising
12:31 pm
awareness about male health. >> you know, i was shocked to find out that men lives five years less than women and in 1920, they lived only one year less in terms of life span. so we're doing something wrong here. women go to doctors more often to begin with. they go to gynecologisgynecolog have child birth. >> and men are stubborn. sfwh exactly. and we only goi when we're sick and then we have to be brought in by women. david has done a big service to get women involved. but i'm looking for an
12:32 pm
internist. i'm doing basic blood work. at 40, i add the psa and rectal exam. there has been a lot of controversy, you about i have to tell you, i need to know in advance of a problem before it exists and then figure out what to do about it. at 50, testosterone level. men get that big tire around a the men. not you, but they do be getting fatigued, diabetes as a result before. and i also add a colonoscopy to that. one last thing. i was on david's radio show today and a guy who called this 43 years old and it was a very sad story because he had widespread prostate cancer with a very high psa that had been overlooked. david and i believe you need that test. and i'm not saying you needily do a knee jerk. we want information. >> and is there sch a thing as too young for guys having it?
12:33 pm
you keep hearing the age of 50. but shouldn't men start having these tests a little bit younger? >> we encourage everyone to get at least a baseline psa at the age of 40. we heard from someone randomly, 43-year-old with widespread of cancer. we just came back from the another 47-year-old who died from prostate cancer. u.s. task force in 2011 came up with this guideline that psa is not a good lidivid guideline. instead of training better surgeon, better techniques, they basically completely blow up psa. what was the message?
12:34 pm
honey, i'm perfectly okay. why do i need to go see a doctor. that's a huge mistake. that's when the young guys are coming in with very aggressive prostate cancers. we want you to get a baseline psa. and based on that recommendation, now 28% lower detection of aggressive prostate cancer. this was published in journal of urology. i think there is a big message out there. and what i tell people, if you're diagnosed with prostate cancer, you don't know what to do, we just came up with prostate cancer 911.com. we're available for free to give you advice. >> if you catch the prostate cancer early, early detection, what is the success race? and this is a fox news alert. new york state police holding a news briefing on the manhunt for the two convicted killers on the run for two week. let's listen in.
12:35 pm
>> there has been a lot of police beingactivity on the tow friendship. on saturday, at approximately 1:16 p.m., the state police received a call from a witness who spotted two men on a railroad line that runs alone county route 20 in the town of fripd ship. the description given was similar to the description of david sweat and richard matt, the two men who escaped from the clinton correctional facility on june 6. we interviewed the interview and the determination was made that this lead should be investigated. approximately 300 members of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies were brought in for the search. a secure perimeter was established around the area of the sighting and road blocks were set up along route 20 in the towns of friendship and
12:36 pm
amity and police checked vehicles. aviation, k-9 and special operations teams were called in to assist. which also included clearing a section of woods along railroad tracks in the town of friendship. we will continue to search will this area until all leads have been exhausted. as we have in other areas of state, we will search under every rock, every every tree and structure until we're confirmed that area is secure. while this issen confirmed, police are asking residents to be on alert. if they're spotted, call 911 immediately. do not approach. please call 1-800-give tip.
12:37 pm
$50,000 offered for information leading to an arrest. they're on the most wanted fugitives list and also offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to their capture. i'll take a few questions. [ inaudible question ]. >> well, she gave us a description that was in line with the two individuals that escaped from the correctional facility. we determined that she was credible and that this should be investigated. [ inaudible question ]. >> our investigation is still ongoing and at this time i will not be getting in to any details regarding our investigation.
12:38 pm
[ inaudible question ]. >> i'm not familiar with that, no. thank you very much. >> so it was brief there, the new york state police updating us, basically saying here is the you news here, that they are still on the alert for these two killers, but here is the big deal, they are now offering $50,000 reward for the capture of either of the men david sweat or richard matt. and $100,000 for both of them. there is an 800 number that the police department just gave out, 1-800-give-tip. if you have any information, they are asking residents there to remain on alert. david sweat, 35, was serving a life sentence without parole for the killing of a sheriff's deputy. richard matt, 48, doing 25 years to life for the 197 kidnapping torture and hack saw dismember
12:39 pm
chlt dismemberment of his former boss. it's been 15 days. they are still on the lamb. police thought they had a credible sighting just last week and they followed up on that tip. it has led to nowhere. but any possible if you have you have on these two fugitives on the run, 1-800-give-tip. there is now a $50,000 reward for the capture of either and $100,000 for both. we'll bring you back to -- we'll stay with this right now. this all happening in the area of friendship, new york. allegheny county. about 11 miles from amity, new york which is where a lot of the hot zone as of this past weekend, last few days.
12:40 pm
and these guys are armed, dangerous. deputies are looking high and close. greg jarrett is here with me and we'll continue talking about this, let you jump in here. >> there have been hundreds of tips, some more credible than others. the law enforcement believe that this woman's tip had the indicia of reliability more than a great many others. but we showed a moment ago the railroad tracks. you have to be concerned if you're law enforcement that these guys could jump a train. and largely get out of the area. and so they tried to surround that area very quickly. >> we'll have more at the top of the hour. right now, stick away for the continuation of house call. it's a common knee surgery,
12:41 pm
but researchers are now saying that the procedure may not be worth it. is surgery the automatic answer? >> based on cdc, about 5.7 million americans go to doctors for knee pain and about 1 million surgeries are being done because of knee pain. the question is whether it's effective or not and based on the recent data from new england journal of medicine, they looked at thousands of people. some for the actual surgeries they put three holes in with a camera, and they can fix it. and some got sham surgery, just looked in and they don't do anything. and they found outpost op both a groups did very well. so probably some of the surgeries are being overused. and just because you have knee pain, you don't have to have surgery. there is a lot of physical
12:42 pm
therapy, being a could you pupgs chur, nonweightbearing exercise, yoga, swimming. and also weight lot. a lot of obesity puts tons of pressure on these knees. obviously if you need surgery, it's very effective. always get a second opinion. >> and i was reading even 5 pounds can make a great difference. >> absolutely. the weight on the knee is exaggerated. by losing 5 pounds, almost getting 25 pounds off those news. >> some guys go out and play tenn tennis, you're you take advil, the problem. >> acetaminophen doesn't work.
12:43 pm
the knee is like an absorber for five times a week. and either eat shoither it's th absorber. so if it gets partially torn, surgery is the last resort here. you have to try things like physical therapy first and injection and losing weight is key fp. >> research has shown just haves a meniscus tear on an mri alone is not enough for surgery. s if it is the combination of locking, catching systems, mechanical systems, and pain that come does not go away after treatment. so what does that all mean? >> you basically as greg mentioned, you're playing sport,
12:44 pm
you will have knee pain. it doesn't go away after a couple of days. he get an mri. on the mri, you may find something around the meniscus that could be abnormal and we watch the want to start with steroid injections and physical therapy and acupuncture. that should go first unless your orthopedic surgeon will say this is absolutely a surgical case. >> you've third will theard the you've bone on bone. is that the time? >> that's one of the times you consider a knee replacement. but the group we're talking about is over 50, they develop some cartilage tear and they have pain, they say what do we do. and the surgeon was saying there look for locking hatching syndrome, meaning that it's clicking, not bearing weight properly, giving out from under
12:45 pm
you. i can extend your knee, flex your knee, rotate your knee. and if i hear that clicking, i know you have that problem. it's a diagnosis i can may go in that office. but it doesn't mean i'm supposed to immediately operate. if you have arthritis in that knee, an mri will tell me p i can inject the knee, use advil. physical therapy and weight loss. >> the real arthritis, the joints is basically gone. >> is it possible to live with a small tear? >> if the tear is on the outside of the meniscus, it will heal on its own. inside you can live with it
12:46 pm
provided you do the things we said. you lose weight, do physical therapy and figure out how to control the pain. and you have that surgery, there is such studies that show increased risk of at right tiar. >> good to get a second opinion. >> and next week we'll get into torn acls. i'm kidding, but there's an idea. dock coming up next, what c us to sweat? and what can we do about it? can be to breathe with copd? it can feel like this. copd includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. spiriva is a once-daily inhaled copd maintenance treatment that helps open my airways for a full 24 hours. spiriva helps me breathe easier. spiriva respimat does not replace hello, and welcome to
