lawn. but some are spraying it with nontoxic paint. >> and fox urgent. we begin with 1200 you law enforcement officials sweeping the wooded area in upper state new york. i am julie banderas. this is the fox report. helicopters and search dogs are part of an intense search just 30 miles away from the maximum security prison. a tip led officials to woods to a cabin where they had a confrontation with richard matt on friday. he failed to comply with orders. but convicted murderer david sweat remains on the loose. they can't confirm whether he was in the same area.

they set up a perimeter to comb a 22 mile area. and rick has continuing coverage there. are they getting close tore catching him tonight? >> julie, authorities have no reason to believe that matt and sweat split up. so it is entirely possible when the border patrol cornered and killed matt his partner and crime david sweet was nearby and managed to sneak off in the woods. it was in the perimeter. and that perimeter as you mentioned squeezed out two square miles and authorities have a lot of tips and indications that sweat may be inside of that perimeter in this region. i asked the sheriff how he thinks sweat is holding up. >> he's been through rough

weather and more rough weather coming in. i can't believe he's getting a lot of slope and they are grabbing food wherever he can. and there is not a lot of abandoned camps. he's in there and in for rough times. >> it is sheriff said they threat every day like the day. if not today, tonight and if not tonight tomorrow. >> what more do we know how they caught matt yesterday. pretty dramatic stuff? >> reporter: it is. one report from the associated press that it was sparked by a cabin owner and then we heard from the state police saying it was sparked when a motorist pulling a camper heard something strange and pulled over and found bullet holds inside of the camper. he called authorities and they sent in a border patrol

tacteccal team. they had agents jumping out of a helicopter in a separate search area on friday morning. it is how quickly the guys can move in and taking every call even though this was particularly 40 miles south of the search area. when they responded to the report, they found a cabin in the woods and smelled gun powder and heard a cough. and they ordered matt to surrender and so they shot and killed him. remember that david sweat is a convicted killer and killed a sheriff's deputy and ran over his body. he is armed and they are treating this search cautiously. >> rick thank you. >> and with the july 4th holiday approaching the department of homeland security is telling law enforcement open for possible terrorist threats.

three weeks. friday federal agents confronted and killed richard matt. his accomplice david sweat remains at large. and we'll bring in the former executive for the fbi and new york and miami and denver. first of all, i would imagine richard matt. he didn't want to be be taken alive. it was cleared he was armed with a 20 gauge shotgun. but do we want them taken alive. wouldn't it be better to get information so escapees don't get away. >> there was a positive aspect. he's calling the shots, not the authorities. he will call the authorities. if he wants to die, he will do i. if he was taken alive, he could straighten out the horrendous performance of those people in
