we are listening to dennis mckenna the medical director of the albany medical center. let's listen. >> the patient was david sweat. as for this particular request, once received our ad minute straight tore on call activated our incident command system to assure that proper clinical and nonclinical activities were coordinated. this is something we drilled on a regular basis. as per our routine and daily experienceal ban knee medical cr doctors nurses and other medical professionals to care for this patient on arrival. no differently than we care for the aapproximate 11,000 transfers that we will receive this year from other hospitals in our region and beyond. this patient was initially evaluated in the emergency department and then taken to a critical location in a hospital that is appropriate for his level of care. so far the specialists involved in his care include doctors in

the emergency department, trauma, intensive care rad yoioy and vascular surgery. his condition is listed as critical. i would like to commend the new york state police, the new york state department of corrections, alleg albany police and albany medical center security for the extraordinary precautions they have taken to assure the safety of our staff and ourour patient. >> what sort of things do you do differently in a hospital to prepare when you have a high profile escaped prisoner coming here? >> i think it's important to remember that the clinical care does not change. when you get into trouble is when you try to alter what you would do on a routine basis. i said in my statement the medical center receives approximately 11,000 transfers a year. many are trauma patients. if you deviate with how you would care for those patients you set yourself up for doing

things the way you are not used to doing. the ditch of this case is the coordination of nonmedical pieces the security paramount to make sure we have the situation controlled and provide care in a way that is safe not only for staff but everyone around us. >> what will be the course of treatment going forward? >> i cannot comment on the course of treatment other than to say right now he's under evaluation of specialists as i mentioned we have assembled as we would a level of physician and nurse and other medical professional specialists to care for him. he is in the middle of the workup at this time. >> did authorities say anything specifically about why they were going toed as opposed to a center somewhere else? >> we are in fact the 50th trauma center in new york state. the record would reflect that we have one of the lowest morbidity results. you want to have patients that survived. that's all of the medical center can provide. they transfer patients to us

routinely. they would come to us under any other circumstances. >> is he able to speak? >> at this point i cannot speak to what essay to go the police or not. >> can you tell us was he ram bung shoes, was he calm? is did you have to sedate him? >> i was not involved in the care of mr. sweat. the team that is caring for him is taking care of him right now. >> i am aware of what's going on but i don't want to speak to the status except the situation is critical. >> k you tell us was he agitated, was he calm, just generally speaking? >> in general he would look like a patient who had injuries he had and he would care for in a way we would care for that patient. >> can you elaborate on the specifics of his injuries at

all? >> i would refer you to the statement given by the state police about his injuries. i would say our evaluation on him was consistent with that. we are treating hip and evaluating in a manner similar to what they reported in their statement. >> did he undergo surgery? >> at this point it is premature to say he will undergo surgery. he is being evaluated trauma surgeons. >> can you tell us how he arrived was it helicopter or plane? >> when we received the call at 4:45 one of the things we do is coordinate with the ascending hospital to make sure transportation is appropriate. he came to us through a combination of ground transport and aero med cal evacuation. he came through a couple different mechanisms. he went from outside hospital to airport and came here via ground transport. >> he went to the airport and

came here via like mohawk ambulance? >> that's correct. >> can you tell us about the secure facility? >> the medical center has a secure part of the hospital which is staffed by department of corrections and is extremely secure unit. that unit is not able to provide a level of care for all patients. it is able to provide a certain level of care. it is a locked unit and it is something that we provide care for patients in that setting ohhen a daily basis. >> can you comment on how many inmates might be treated in a secure unit? >> we might have 8-10 patients in that unit. >> we have a contract with the department of corrections. we in fact receive these patients to our hospital care and provide care. >> is that where he is? >> i would say at this point in time he is at a setting in the hospital thattest appropriate for his level of care.

i can't get into the specifics of where he is at this time. >> has any one (indiscernible) related to when you are a felon when you are certain rights. are the hipaa laws still in effect for a pefelon? >> i am very familiar with the hipaa laws on this patient but it won't allow me to go beyond what i said before. >> can you tell us what you are allowed? >> i would refer those questions to the department of corrections. >> are they in place the hipaa laws? are they not in place for a felon? >> i am not authorized to speak about this patient than i am for any other patient. >> is the hepa laws generally speaking are they enforced? >> hipaa is in play at this time. yes, sir. >> any concerns about bringing him into the care of the hospital? >> no concern at all. i say that because having been down in the emergency department before he arrived, having seen

what the individuals i mentioned, the legal profession was able to bear the new york state police, department of corrections, the only police in our security i can say with confidence our staff and other patients are very safe. >> are the staff specially certified and trained in a way others may not be trained? >> you are talking about the -- >> in the secure unit. >> yes, they undergo regular rouse raining. we have policies and procedures that not only are security personnel but clinical providers undergo. you can't get to our secure unit without additional training. >> given the injuries you know mr. sweat to have, are you able to make a medical guess how long he might be a patient here? >> what i can tell you is his condition is critical and based on the preliminary evaluation of the patient it is obvious he would need to be here for at least a series of days for sure. >> would you mind repeating the

departments that are going to be caring for him? i know you mentioned radiology. >> currently to repeat, this list could grow, it would be consistent with any other type of multi trauma patient we would receive. he often requires services of many different providers. emergency medicine, trauma doctors, critical care doctors, radiology doctors and ras cvasc surgeons will be involved in his care. >> can you speak at all if his health conditions were pro xhiezed at all being in the woods. >> the medical director of the albany medical center. he is giving us the 411 or information if you will on david sweat who was shot and captured earlier this afternoon bringing to a close the dramatic situation unfolding for the past three weeks since june 6th, as a matter of fact, when he and his
