mall in washington, d.c. with the very latest on these threats. doug, what do you know? >> good morning, guys. nice, quiet, peaceful outside the capitol, but there is this under current of concern. we saw the degree to which law enforcement agencies are operating under a hair trigger yesterday when there were these reports at a gunman at washington's navy yard and a lot of sensitive the involved given the fact that a dozen people were killed there in 2013 when a gunman was on the loose. this time, it ended up being an erroneous report. the flood of law enforcement there shows the degree they may be gearing up for this fourth of july holiday. >> here in washington, d.c., there's an elevated threat level at all times. we never lower our threat level in terms of our posture and we're aware what the discussion and chatter is around the fourth

of july events and all those threats and we take those into account. >> now, here and around the nation's capitol, we're going to see a big fireworks show and concert tomorrow night. one of the biggest events happening around the country for the fourth of july. but, the challenge with the fourth of july is that you have so many events going on from one end of the country to the other, from small towns to large cities, it becomes a real challenge for law enforcement and for u.s. intelligence agencies tracking this evolving terror threat that doesn't involve that top down hierarchy of al qaeda but rather a decentralized threat with isis trying to inspire lone wolf gunmen through the use of social media. >> unlike al qaeda of the old days, there doesn't have to be and won't necessarily be a commanding control relationship between somebody who incity investigates a -- instigates a relationship and isil. are we concerned about that? absolutely. >> the fbi concerned about this as well.

they send out a memo to local law enforcement agencies last week to be extra vigilant head noog this weekend. as we celebrate independence day, we put our cards right on the table with our proud american hash tag. you know where we stand. there's a sobering new poll of americans asking are you proud to be an american? we want to contrast the number that we just got from one we got about a decade ago. here's the new number. >> this was taken in early june. how proud are you to be an american, 54% extremely. only a little? who answers that. only a little patriotic. >> a little more than half our country is extremely proud to be an american. let's do it to what tucker is talking about. let's compare it to 2003 where 70% of our country said they

were extremely proud to be an american and the reason i believe we're seeing these numbers change dramatically over the course of 12 years is because people are not happy with this administration. i don't think it has anything to do with how proud you are with your grandparents did in world war ii. we have a producer who said we feel less pay interest tree yotic -- patriotic when you don't feel as free. >> they certainly feel under attack by this government. this is the bottom line on the administration. if you are the president of the united states, this is the main number you look at, are people happy living in the country that you run? if you see a 16 point drop, that's a referendum on you. >> it's a feeling that you are secure in your country, that your country is protecting you and when you hear all this chatter about isis and whether or not we're safe on the fourth of july and you see these horrible videos coming out of the middle east and a lack of

identity and plan from this administration how to tackle this problem. we saw this numbers like this prior to 9/11, the nation rallied around this catastrophic event and the numbers skyrocketed. hopefully we don't need anything like that. >> i'm struck by the number of young people who have been ashamed about the country's history. and it's not my imagination. actually, we have a monday taj here, a man called mark dice asked beachgoers why we celebrate the fourth of july. watch this. >> what are we celebrating on the fourth of july? >> our independence. >> a little more specific. >> it's the day that we overtook the south. >> the declaration of independence was signed by who? >> i don't know. >> just name one person. >> abraham lincoln.

hospital with breathing issues, skin irritation and nausea. a missing couple case in arizona ending in tragedy. police say their bodies were found buried outside the home of 38-year-old jose venezuela a week after they went missing. he has confessed to their murders saying he used meth with the couple and he is being held on $2 million bond. donald trump's miss usa pagent has a new home. reelz channel has picked it up and will broadcast the event. while he disagrees with trump's comments, ms. usa is not a political event. there is a retired new york city firefighter and now he's a jackpot winner.

welcome back. you hear this story every summer but this year it is absolutely not media hype. it's real. it's danger in the water before the fourth of july weekend. we have two new victims bitten by sharks off the coast of north carolina just this week. >> the frightening encounters bringing the total number of shark attacks in this united states this year alone to 24 with thousands of families hitding the beach this weekend how can you and your family stay safe? >> there is no one better to ask this question than jeff corwin. how can people going to the beach this weekend keep themselves safe from shark attacks? >> the first thing they need to

realize is that the probability is remote. when we see clusters of attacks like this, we think they happen more commonly than they do in reality. you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning twice than you do of getting attacked by a shark. between one and 11 million people will ever have a negative encounter with a shark in the wild, but you can decrease that risk even though it's remote. you cannot go in the water at dusk or dawn where the light is broken up and the visibility is poor. stay out during rain storms. if there's a lot of baitfish in the area, you don't want to be in the water. >> why so many attacks recently? especially off the coast of the carolinas in that one area? >> it's most curious, but there's probably a number of reasons why this is occurring. number one, this is the breeding time, this is when lots of sharks come into this area. multiple species, like five

different species and they are there to pup, they are breeding. this is the nursery site. it's also feeding time many we're getting great migrations of sea turtles in. you have coastal birds hatching out. all this flurry of food activity makes it a hot shark zone. >> is there a step you can take? how do you not look like a sea turtle to the shark? are there certain bathing suits that are more provocative, jewelry? >> you want to go to those shell free beaches, which are a little bit of controversial. one thing you can do is not wear a lot of glittering jewelry, not to say that a shark is going to attack you, but things that resemble a fish scale may get a predatory fish's attention. you want to be careful when you are in the water, what time you are in the water, and certainly if there's a lot of shark activity, if you are being in a place where there's been a

coast and he hooked a bull shark and the shark tipped the kayak over. he was able to swim to safety. those are your headlines. it is the fourth of july weekend and what's more important than the weather in our forecast. maria is standing by with that. >> hello, everybody at home and we're going to be tracking some storms throughout the day today, unfortunately, some of them could produce some isolated severe weather in parts of the southeast and into the plains and they are going to have heavy rain as well, so watch out for localized flash flooding. several areas forecast for storms tomorrow. we're going to be tracking storms across new mexico, the plains, and across parts of california. temperature wise, high temperatures, places like atlanta, only forecast to reach the low 80s. 70s widespread across the northeast, but farther west, that's where we're really tracking some of that summer

heat. temperatures will make it into the upper 90s as far north as billings, montana, you are also going to be on the hot side on el paso, texas, temperatures in the 90s there, 90s in denver and also in reno. southern california and l.a. not too bad there. forecast to be in the middle 70s. your temperatures across the eastern u.s., very similar to what we're forecasting tomorrow. 70s and 80s as much hotter as we head farther west. fox news is celebrating all the proud americans this fourth of july of course and this year at patriots point in charleston, south carolina, we have a few of our own. >> and our other heather childers is live there this morning. >> this is a sea hawk helicopter and it was used in battle between the 1960s and all the way up to 1990s, it's very similar to what the president flies in. this is one of several aircraft you can check out here at

flag that exploded couple weeks ago. the idea that displaying the flag led to murders or something like that. they're asking fans not to bring flags to races. what do you think of this? >> reporter: led by governor haley, there were significant changes at state level here. then private companies started to take down that merchandise. it's not surprising nascar is asking fans this. i understand people say this is our heritage. we're not going to for political correctness. if i were nascar and fans, i might look at this in different ways. we're strong enough of heritage and history and as fans of nascar. i saw that first hand in april at bristol motor speed way. if they don't dump the flag,

of their country and whether or not they identify themselves as patriots is all-time low 54%. extremely 54%. only a little, 4%. what do you make of this? >> first of all, having lived through the 9/11 immediate aftermath and gearing up for the invasion of afghanistan and whole notion that the nation was under attack from abroad, i think classically clayton, if you were to go back and check out surveys when ever we were enganged in foreign conflict. people come together. that's natural. now it's much more ambiguous. we're fighting ourselves as well as foreign enemies. politically, idea logically, racially, there's so much going on internally. i think that was 81% very or extremely patriotic. that's not so shabby. i wish 81% of people turned out

to vote to demonstrate p patrioti patriotism. i think this is patriotic more than most. when i travel, everyone wants to be an american or at least be in america. i think that we are sitting pretty good compared to the world because of our economic strength, military might cohesion as a nation. despite our problems, i'd rather be on our side. >> you never know. you listen to the president that points to dylann roofs of the word. that's america. there's tons in america. that's untrue. americans are decent. you listen to obama and you think this is a country dark in its soul. >> we have had -- i agree that he could perhaps be more upbeat and more of a uniter, but you cannot deny that was a stunning and traumatic blow that really exacerbated the existing tensions. >> that's not america.
