mimics fasting. dr. samadi, what's this all about? >> julie, there's lots of ways to lose weight, a new fad that's coming out and that's fasting. a study that was published that looked at 38 patients. half of them had normal diets the other half went on fasts for about five days a month, and what they followed them afterwards they realized the ones that fasted, meaning they took 750 calories a day, they ended up having lower amounts of fat, cholesterol went down and risk to vardio vascular went down and they were healthier. did the same thing in yeast, mice and human and the same pattern. taking a break from animal fat, sugar, and all the fatty food we're having and tyke five days break of very low calorie intake, you become healthier, so there are pros and cons. i think it's not a bad idea to do it for a couple of days, ng, lower the amount of calories that you take, just to break the cycle of your routine, eating the same kind of food all the time, but if you do it for prolong period,

five days, a week, i think that's when you run into trouble of muscle wasting, when you don't get enough protein you'll affect your whole entire body so i don't like to do this for long periods. short term it's okay. >> marc, what would you do? what would you fast with? just protein? >> mainly protein and we're talking about 725 calories the first day and then 1,000 for the next four days. now, in mice this showed that they actually restarted their immune system. i'm calling this pushing the restart button. in other words, slowing down the metabolism. if you've been having inflammation on your body, pre-cancer, diabetes, heart disease, this is pushing the restart button, but i want to put a cautionary flag on this because there's a lot of people out there that have underlying illnesses who cannot afford to have a fast something like this for five days. if this catches on and becomes a fad, eric, you know what will happen? people will get hurt and sick from it. it may work in mice and what's
9:42 am
interesting in mice they started making stem cells so i believe there's something to this scientifically. restarting the metabolism but for humans 38 people is not a big study. needs to make more of this. makes sense conceptually but i would be cautious because of people's underlying diseases. >> if you really remember, julie, last week we talked about how you can change the ecosystem of your bacterias, good and bad back the yeah, and this probably, as marc mentioned, it's a reboot of your system. you're basically starting from scratch. you're taking a few days from your routine diet and changing some of those bacterias, and for mice to actually create new stem cells, that's a good finding. it may not be ready for prime time but it's an interesting finding. >> similar to a cleanse, big fan of doing a three to five-day juice cleanse, you feel rebooted and have more energy and all of that, and the problem here and here's the con, when you start to lower the intake of fat and calories, doesn't your body start to produce its own fat?
9:43 am
it's sort of the whole notion of if you skip meals it's not good for you because if you're starving yourself your body is going to produce more fat and you're not netly going to lose weight that way is it. >> a very important point and what you're losing, by the way, is first few days is all water. 70%, 80% of your body consists of water and that's the ray they are lose and that's why they are gaining back right away and that's one of the reasons why i said i don't like the fact that it's going for five to seven days because you're starving your body and you're going to basically build up more fat, i agree. >> what you do is actually break down your protein. take your protein and muscle. >> good protein breaking down that you don't want to do. >> and you're fasting, and the cleanses are very variable. >> check with your doctor first. >> julie is doing the right kind of cleanse but make sure whatever you do has enough protein because orth wise you'll break down the protein. >> fat is the source of energy, highly dense, and when you run out of bank and don't have any
