tv Sunday Housecall FOX News July 5, 2015 12:30pm-1:01pm PDT
12:30 pm
12:31 pm
it's also a time that can result in trips to the emergency room. >> we have talked about barbecuing which everybody is going to be doing. i don't want to go over old ground. your raw meat from your cooked meat. eat a lot of vegetables. don't eat 5,000 hot dogs. if you drink ten beers don't drive. everybody is setting off these fire crackers and i don't want kids under the age of 5 anywhere near this. don't think a kid could sell off a sparkler. i don't want young kids at all near this. also watch out when you drink and do this. don't go throwing this stuff anywhere. you light a fire cracker don't throw it anywhere. people get seriously hurt. over 7,000 visits to the emergency every year. you can lose a finger this way
12:32 pm
and if you throw it into a place where there's dry grass or something that can catch fire you can set a fire off. this is a huge problem. >> a lot of people with bottle rockets, i grew up and we put them in bottles but people hold them in their hands up in the air and let them shoot out of their hands. that's asking for trouble. >> first of all, happy fourth of july and for a lot of us from other countries this is a great moment to celebrate and we're all proud to be an american and getting back to the question, the temperature in the hands of this can go up to 1,000 degrees and cause injury. you should celebrate but keep the kids away from the fireworks. there's people drinking but they don't realize that they're half drunk. they're being dehydrated and after a few hours they're drunk and they may start shooting and that's when you run the risk of drowning and other things.
12:33 pm
also this goes up and that's what we see in the emergency rooms. a lot of times they may not feel drunk. they're texting and getting pictures from the fireworks to their friends and that's when you would get car accidents. i think having fun food, i'm okay with it. we talked about all healthy f d foo foods. this is the time when they can loosen up. i have no problem with that. >>ly add, if you're going to use fireworks, have an emergency kit around. if you get burned put it under cool water. with a surgeon around it's possible and you can tell the difference in first degree and second degree bonds. they have blistering to them f. it's larger than the palm of your hand get to the hospital and get scene. 3rd degree burns where you start to lose sensation automatically go to the hospital.
12:34 pm
>> should you go to the hospital if you have a second degree burn? >> absolutely. you don't want to treat this yourself. make sure that you go there because they can treat it very rapidly. the other thing is we see kids there the whole weekend and they're out in the sun and also sun burned is another problem. make sure that you use the spf at least over 15 and every two hours apply but it's a fun time. >> a whole weekend of fun. >> you're welcome to come to our parties also. >> i don't cook butly come. >> when you fall in the pool he has the emergency kit. >> i'll bring my floatties. >> also the grill. soap and water. what do you do? >> if it's the first time you're using it and you haven't used it all year it can have leaks. we're talking propane here but if you light a match the thing can blow up. use soap and water on the lines going to the grill. >> also we know a lot of people will be drinking alcohol but we should remind people to drink
12:35 pm
water. people are day drinking. i have done it myself. you start at 10:00 in the morning with your bloody mary and afternoon on wine. and the mistake is you forget to drink water. dehydration is serious. >> dehydration and then you start diving and you'll have a lot of accidents. always have a couple of people watch the entire group and if you see someone not doing well, don't let them jump in. >> especially with kids around the pool. >> grown ups go off and have a couple of drinks to enjoy life and you think the kids are out there having fun and something potentially could happen. >> i want to emphasize the point about water. it's never too late. before you start drinking water. while you're drinking, two fisted drinking. water in one hand. >> double fisted for me is two cocktails. so water and my cocktail. >> if you're holding it for someone else. >> not so much. >> and afterward it's the best
12:36 pm
treatment for hang over. >> she's talking about mixing alcohol. >> water makes all the difference and when you are drinking over the course of several hours it's slow day drinking so this is where the water and dehydration is a big issue. >> you know a lot about alcohol. >> i've done my research david for years. >> to david's point about watching over the area, kids especially, if you're drinking make sure that somebody is watching your kids. they can fall in the pool. >> a designated parent. >> watch the kids. >> and plan ahead too. plan -- pack an overnight bag or sleep where you're going. no need to figure it out at the end of the day. >> have you got room for me? >> absolutely. it's a fun weekend and we should all enjoy it. >> having fun. >> and celebrate our country. >> that's the most important
12:37 pm
thing. have to remember that. >> put the flag out. i am careful. i don't lean out too far with the screen. >> and not to get into the politics of this but it's priceless to be an american and with all the pressure all over the world this is the weekend you want to go out and celebrate with your family and we get some rest too. >> nonpartisan celebration. we're americans we're celebrating americans. >> happy fourth everyone. >> happy fourth. it's the latest diet craze out there. eating normally and then once every three weeks shocking your system into thinking it's starving. does it work? and is it healthy? we'll ask the doctors next.
12:38 pm
12:39 pm
12:40 pm
>> let's get the skinny on the new weightloss craze that mimics fasting. >> it's coming out. by fasting, this is something that looked at 38 patients. half of them have normal diets and the other half, they went on fast for about five days a month and they followed them afterwards and realized that the ones that fasted meaning they only took in about 750 calories a day they end up having lower amount of fat, their cholesterol was down. and they did the same thing in mice. by taking a break from animal fat and sugar and fatty food and just taking five days break you become healthier. i think it's not a bad idea to do it a couple days, watch what you're eating and break the cycle of your routine but if you
12:41 pm
do it prolonged that's when you run into trouble. i don't like to do this for long periods but short-term is okay. >> what would you fast with? just protein? >> mainly protein. we're talking about 725 calories and this shows that they actually -- it's pushing the restart button. slowing the metabolism, this is pushing the restart button but i want to put a question in there. there's a lot of people out there with underlying illnesses that cannot afford to fast for five days. if this becomes a fad people are going to get hurt from it and
12:42 pm
sick from it. they started making stem cells so i believe there's something to this scientifically. 38 people is not a big study. we need to look more at it. it makes sense. i would be cautionary because of people's underlying diseases. >> last week we talked about how you can change the eco system and this reboots your system. you're basically falling scratch. you take a few days from your routine diet and changing your bacteria and to create new stem cells that's a good finding. it may not be ready for primetime but it's an interesting finding. >> have done the juice cleanse and the problem is when you
12:43 pm
start to lower the intake or fat and calories don't you start to keep fat. your body is going to produce more fat and you're not going to lose weight that way. >> that's a very important point and what you're losing by the way, the first few days it's all water. 70 or 80% of your body consists of all water. so that's the weight you're losing. that's why they gain it back right away. that's one of the reasons why i said i don't like the fact that it's going from 5 to 7 days because you're starving your body and you're going to basically build up more fat. i agree with you. >> to your point, what you do is break down your protein. you take your protein and -- >> that's what you don't want to do. so you're fasting and these cleanses are very variable. i would caution people out there. julie is probably doing the right kind of cleanse but you have to make sure that whatever you do has enough protein in it because you'll break down your own protein. >> fat is the source of energy. and when you run out of bank and
12:44 pm
you don't have any currency anymore you're going to go to another bank which is protein. you're going to start getting into muscle wasting. >> in all, what's the best type of diet? >> one thing is for sure. we talked about the mediterranean diet. the best type is low carb. no bread. low in pasta. low in rice. low in cookies. >> low starch. >> yeah. >> how about brown rice? can you do brown rice? >> i mean, look, it's better than white rice but processed foods are the worst. >> why did you bring brown rice? >> it's supposed to be good. >> because it has vitamin d and protein in it. >> high fiber is the key. fruits and vegetables. less meat. >> foods of the enemy. that's where all the sugars are. if you can get rid of the foods. >> portion control. that's the keyword. >> that is the key. >> some red wine in there.
12:45 pm
>> yeah? >> happy fourth. >> coming up, we will talk to you about a rare and critical test that can detect howell the blood flows in your heart. we'll tell you what it is and what it means and how you can prepare for it while we contemplate the diet. abetes, steady is exciting. only glucerna has carbsteady, clinically proven to help minimize blood sugar spikes. so you stay steady ahead. did you know that meeting your daily protein needs actually helps to support your muscle health? boost® high protein nutritional drink can help you get the protein you need. each serving has 15 grams of protein to help maintain muscle, plus 26 vitamins and minerals including calcium and vitamin d to support strong bones.
12:46 pm
12:48 pm
. and back now to "sunday hous back now on sunday house call on our segment. should i worry. one viewer writes i'm a 53-year-old woman never smoked. i'm in great shape but have been scheduled for a stress test. should i worry? why do you think her doctor suggests this? >> we don't have enough information but i will say this. we don't know what else she has. if she has a family history of heart disease. she has high blood pressure.
12:49 pm
high cholesterol. if she exercises a lot and is about to do a marathon and wants to know if she is at risk but consider this, what's called the pretest probability with a stress test -- >> what is that? >> you walk someone or run them on a treadmill and look to see what happens. you simulate what's called increased workload of the heart. when the heart is under stress you look to see if there's an example of narrowing that's gone on but it would have to be more than 70% of the arteries being narrowed before it would come out on a stress test. you could have disease to the arteries of your heart and a stress test wouldn't show it. it has to be narrow before it comes out. it's also overdone in some people. not everybody over 50 should have a stress test. if she has a risk, a relationship risk, or diabetes as another risk factor i might want to do it knowing that the pretest probability, the chances of her having a problem is only
12:50 pm
80 to 90% that a stress test will pick it up. not 100%. they miss the problem and they'll sometimes tell you -- >> what should you do to find out you if you test will pick it up. not 100%. stress tests miss the problem and will sometimes you have it when you don't have it. >> what should you do if you have narrowing of the arteries? >> other things you can do besides a stress test. we talked about calcium scoring, a c.t.angiogram. and it's a test that examines function. norts it's -- in other words, it's practical. saying hey, if you want to run a marathon, do it under circumstances where we can control it. that's what i like about it. >> david. >> and he deals with this a lot more, but it's good for what are the indications of a stress test. i want to play a little devil's
12:51 pm
advocate. and if you have high cholesterol and blood pressure, should you go for a stress test? basically what i understand is no. when i read this e-mail right now, she doesn't smoke, she exercises. >> she says she's in great shape. >> and if there's no real family history, i don't see why -- first of all, are stress tests being overdone in the country? that's what needs to be responded to. but what happens with the stress test yb you put them on the treadmi treadmill, you look at their blood pressure, the whole purpose is to find if there are any blockages in blood flow to your heart. i don't see any reason in this particular patient. >> let me address that. what i should say, the more risk factors you have, the more of a chance you should do this. also if you have ekg abnormalities.
12:52 pm
if somebody is doing a screening -- if a woman comes to see me with high blood pressure and diabetes, i agree with david. i would not do a stress test. if i see something on the ekg, then i go for the stress test. >> is the thallium thing different? >> what they do, they give you the thallium and they take a picture of your heart and look at your heart rate, your ekg changes and your blood pressure to see if there are any kind of blockages. if there is, you are going to have a different heart rate. >> the thallium, it's a dye they put in, and it doesn't get picked up by arteries that are blocked. >> good advice as always. she wrote in to the doctors and if you have any questions, you can do that too. use the e-mail
12:53 pm
housecall@foxnews.com. millions of children suffering from allergies in the u.s. next, hear why doctors say you can help prevent some of their symptoms with early exposure. we're going to tell you how this works next. ld. ld. and haven't for 35 years. with the hightest standard of animal care in the world, our whales are healthy. they're thriving. i wouldn't work here if they weren't. and government research shows they live just as long as whales in the wild. caring for these whales, we have a great responsibility to get that right. and we take it very seriously. because we love them. and we know you love them too.
12:56 pm
they they affect millions of people, but new research suggests early exposure to allergies may be keeping them at bay. let me ask you first of all, is that the truth, that we should perhaps rule the allergies out from affecting us earlier in life by exposing ourselves earlier to them in life? >> we see the numbers on the rise. how many times have you heard,
12:57 pm
don't give your kids any eggs until they're three years old. >> absolutely. and peanut better. >> yes, or peanut butter until they're two or three years old. a new study says that everything we thought is wrong, and the earlier you expose your kids gently, they start building up tolerance. and they realized when the kids are exposed earlier on, a number of the peanut allergies in the future is a lot less. and so, i think it's okay to get them exposed. when they have these kinds of allergi allergies, the shock can be lethal. it's a good idea to start early. >> and in the study in 2014, in israel, jewish children were
12:58 pm
given peanuts, no problem, and they had less allergies. and they've now changed their requirements based on this study that we're talking about here. because the head of the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases is very excited about this as a game changer. the first time they literally gave peanuts and peanut butter to kids from four months on until the sage of five years and found that there was an 86% reduction in the amount of peanut allergies. >> significant number. >> how do you know your child may have that allergy? talk to your doctor? >> great point. you have to know who's at risk. here's the point here. but we may be causing allergy by prematurely taking foods away. and the body says, i don't see that. i don't see that. when it finally sees it, they think there's something wrong to it and they make an allergy to it. >> when we were kids, there were
12:59 pm
no rules with no eggs or honey. my mom used to put honey on my pacifier. now that's a no-go. now, more and more children seem to have allergies. there are no-nut policies in schoolrooms because of more children developing more allergies. >> and the same way that we're doing more cleaning and using more detergents, you're not being exposed. and then your body is in shock. >> makes sense. >> to your point by the way, the kids they used in this study were high allergy kids. most of them had eczema and high allergies. they were taking kids at risk, and think found much less problems. >> and it's devastating to some families, they always have to walk around the epi-pens in their pockets. be ready for that kind of
1:00 pm
reaction rmts it's very scary to live that way. if someone becomes short of breath, take them to the e.r. >> or gi problems in a kid, kid vomiting or get a rash, take them to the er. >> happy fourth. >> thank you. >> thanks for watching, everyone. fox news alert. the returns are coming in on the referendum in greece and early results showing the country has rejected the bailout deal. the country's finance minister saying the greek people have said quote no more to continued as tearty. now europe and markets around the world are bracing for any fallout. welcome to america's news headquarters. right now the greek interior ministry is projecting that no has won by 61% of the vote. however what happens next is far from simple.
