have dedicated significant resources. we expect probably by the end of the day we'll have several hundred fbi resources on scene to conduct this investigation. >> can you tell us if he shot himself or someone shot him? >> at this point we have not conducted a complete crime scene investigation -- >> can't answer that question -- >> i have a suspicion to the answer to that question but again i want to make sure the evidence confirms anything we can say. >> are we currently at a threat level? >> no higher threat level than before. >> can you confirm the two different locations. >> two separate locations. both of them were military facilities both naval reserve facilities here in chattanooga. >> any kind of timeline for which shooting happened first. >> the one on lee highway occurred first and then -- i believe chattanooga pd began pursuit of the individual and it

12:17 pm
>> live from chattanooga the latest. the federal bureau of investigation, according to the u.s. attorney for the eastern district of tennessee investigating this as an act of domestic terrorism elm. that's not to say what happened but they're investigating it as that. they got clarity as they said they'll work to determine who that's man was described only at a white male in a silver mustang, who shot first from inside the vehicle and at the second scene was on the run. he has been described to news no other way. we don't know if he is former military if he had any attachment think locations and authorities are very clear to say they're going to investigate this and when they do they'll be able to find out whether this is a crime or some act of domestic terrorism, in the meantime they'll investigate it as such. highlights being authorities believe there was one gunman, the gunman acted alone the gunman is now dead. four u.s. marines were also shot and killed. a police officer shot, according to the authorities there, in the
12:18 pm
ankle and was taken to a hospital and is now from other reports we have, said to be in surgery. though stable and doing fine. that is a police officer plus two others who were shot in one way or another. none of those expected to be life-threatening injuries. so, the shooter is dade can though they went be specific. we have a little bit more and i'll show you that. this is the first location. the recruiting center, just off the chattanooga airport where all of this began. it sounds like they believed this person was residing residing in the chattanooga area at least recently. whether he is from chattanooga oar not we don't know. but this is the first location, and that is this center right here where we saw repeatedly -- oops -- saw bulletholes -- this is a live picture from local station news channel 9 -- video actually. we believe there was one superficial wound that happened at the first location at the recruiting center, and the man
12:19 pm
took off and left according to reports from witnesses. took this 153 highway and ended up in the river front park and that's where the lives were lost. this is where the father -- four marines were killed and this where is the suspect -- i authorities won't say but our reporting indicates this is where the suspect was killed. here's how this went down. as -- there has been this gunfire going on for a matter of minutes. a witness described it as many as 20 minutes. at any rate, at some point that became less sporadic, or less often, and eventually a chattanooga times free press reporter was here and heard two gunshots away from this initial scene and it's believed that may be where the suspect was taken out. we are led to believe either by hamilton county, which is the county in and around chattanooga, or chattanooga city. we don't know because authorities from both
12:20 pm
jurisdictions were on scene but as the authorities put it they were able to neutralize this very quickly. now we have an investigation into the death of two -- four u.s. marines and questions about what this particular man's motive was and the reason that they're not categorizing it as such now is what do they know about his background? is he former military and did he have a beef with them? with someone at a location or was his overall motivation to spread domestic terrorism? was he acting on the urging of some sort of terrorist organization? authorities don't know. the investigation is underway and when they have the further they'll bing it some. the best reporting has been from jennifer griffin who has been at the pentagon. anything more from your end? >> reporter: what was interesting is that we heard the authorities say that theys2÷, have no evidence at this point in time that this shooter had a
12:21 pm
military background. we are awaiting a statement from the u.s. marine corps. they're going to put that out on facebook we're told. they're in the process of notifying families. we have been reporting it was a reserve unit that was based there. the third battalion of the 14th marines that was based at the center on amnicola boulevard, but again right now we do not have the named but it's clear from what the authorities told reporters at the press conference, the shooter, they do not believe had a military background at this moment in time and he did live in the chattanooga area. they are looking at the domestic terrorism issue and seeing if there's enough connection to isil but they also said at that press conference they didn't have any evidence as of yet. they're simply going to wait to rule that out and they are-of course we all remember that on the july 4th weekend the week before that, the department of homeland security put out the alert that u.s. service members
12:22 pm
military bases and july 4th july 4th parades could be a target of domestic -- of a lone shooter like this one. so all of these spaces have been on bravo alert status, intense security on bases but again this -- what they described was the police chased him from the recruiting center on lee highway, over to amnicola. she shooting started at 10:45 and lasted 30 minutes including the chase by the police over to this second naval facility where the marines were killed. >> i know the pentagon has largely stayed on the sidelines of this, but they're now confirm thing marines are dead, as did the locals. i wonder what sort of involvement the pentagon will have going forward? >> reporter: the president was alerted to this and was updated on the two attacks on the two military facilities.
12:23 pm
we know that the pentagon has been trying to get information but it was very difficult to get information because all of the facilities were on lockdown, and this has bun one of the more frustrating stories to report because information was not flowing back through our normal sources in the marine corps as well as in the navy. then we heard it was marines it was natural they would not be confirming the names until the family notifications had taken place. >> i will add that way out in front of all of this was the chattanooga times free press who had an army of reporters on the story, and their information spot on at every turn. while the shooter and motivation are unknown, the name of the shooter and his note vacation un -- unknown, a source says they're paying close attention to the timing. the last days of ramadan and whether it was a factor in the
12:24 pm
shooting. catherine herridge is live in washington good, afternoon. >> reporter: i just wanted to step back and give you some context, having covered the area for 15 years. it's highly unusual within a five hour window for the fbi to already be in the lead and to have a news conference where they're confirming several hundred agents will be on the scene and they're starting point is domestic terrorism barring evidence that would exclude that. that is highly unusual. they also confirmed at the news conference the individual was not military, which would seem to rule out some kind of work-place grudge, and that the individual did not have known ties to the individuals who were targeted. but at that news conference they used very specific language about the brutal attack and the method of attack, certainly speaking to the idea that the military was targeted in this
12:25 pm
attack. based on the reporting i've been able to do here in washington, which is certainly not in the scene, in chattanooga but there has been unease throughout the afternoon as the story has developed, but the timing coming at the end of ramadan and also at a time when the fbi director and the chairman of the house homeland security committee have indicated to us on the record they did not believe the threat had passed. that said, you're quite right to state that we don't know who the individual is, and we don't know what their motivation is, but as we heard at the news conference, what we know is happening is that they have identified that person and they're starting what law enforcement circles like to call the drilldown. that means they're looking at their digital profile online, their social media accounts, and they're looking to build their network of contacts contacts and whether there may have been any support for this incident today and any indication as to the motivation.
12:26 pm
but again it is highly unusual to see the fbi so quickly in the lead with so many agents on the ground, and to have a starting point of terrorism in a case like this. >> breaking news coverage continues but first two new breaking items we'll begin with this just in from aurora, colorado. the trial of james holmes, the suspected movie theater massacre is now going to the -- has been with the jury all day and now the jury has reached a verdict. a verdict reached in the trial of james holmes, who on july 20 2012, is accused of shooting up a movery theater and the premiere of the danger knighted rises. he is said to have gone on this rampage, left 12 people dead. there has been dramatic testimony. the jury had the case last evening and deliberated throughout the day and now

continuing coverage break news out of chattanooga tennessee, where we now to the local police say that hamilton county and chattanooga police, quote, actively and enthusaas particularly engaged the suspect. engaged the suspect. it's our belief now though they won't confirm it -- that a member of law enforcement was able to shoot and kill the suspect after four united states marines were shot and killed. the local law enforcement in the officer with an ankle injury, and two others hurt as well on attacks on two military facilities in chattanooga tennessee, authorities say this is an open investigation. they're investigating it as a possibility of an act of domestic terrorism but they say they cannot know until the investigation continues exactly

breaking news and an update on former president george h.w. bush bush 41, after he fell and broke a bone in his neck. a spokesman says it happened at his summer home in ken bunkcourt in maine. a spokesman said he is doing okay and will need a neck brace. the plan is to let it heal on its open without surgery. president bush is 91. he has a form of pack kinson's disease in december he spent a week in the hospital for shortness of breath. his granddaughter sent out a tweet and said, always touched by kindness. thank you for your thoughts and
12:36 pm
prayers for our dear gamps. we're optimistic he will heal well and doctors seem to be as well. the white house says that president obama called the former president today to wish him a speedy report, president bush spoke with him and said he sounded strong, and dr. markkz5 stiegel has been in touch with the family and they're representatives. what do you know? >> he is actually very lucky in a certain way which is that he didn't suffer any neurological deficits. he is moving his arms and legs, never blacked out. didn't have a concussion. he had a c-2 fracture and that's in a worrisome area, right about here. the seventh vertebrae up here in the upper spine. his is in the second one. generally if it was younger patient, they might consider operating or might consider a halo, the thing with the screws you see. 91 years old. they're going to try to use a hard brace over several weeks to see if it heals.
12:37 pm
they will cheap checking x-rays and the other issue here is the man's spirit. when you're like him you heal. he has never given up. he won't give up. >> he is a very strong man for his age. people who jump out of planes at 0 -- 80 and 85, speaks for itself. >> absolutely. the one thing that isn't strong are the bones themselves. they're not as stirredy. that's why a fracture like this will occur and it's also why it will take longer to heal so hat to be watched carefully. it's easy to fall if your have parkinson's. >> do we know how the fall happened? >> in the course of regular activity it happened, transferring from one place but did not black out already hit his head. his spokesperson says as far as he knows he didn't hit his head, just hit his neck. >> that caused the breck of the

12:39 pm
and continuing coverage now out of the tragedy in tennessee where authorities now confirm four united states marines are dead, the shooter is dead, the active shooter situationes over and things are back to normal except for a challenging investigation, with is now is marilyn hutchison who said she heard fire the navy reserve center and has been quoted. how are you doing? >> well, we were finally able to get home but still quite in shock. >> they had you kind of holed up there for a while. tell us about the very beginning of this. >> well, my friend and i had gone on break and we were sitting there and w heard somewhere between you know, seven to 15 pops, really fast. we both looked at each and said, that's gunfire. and we7x knew just from the vicinity of where we were, where it was coming from. so, we go in and start toward the building, and the next thing
12:40 pm
i know is there were police converged from everywhere, i mean there was just more police officers than you can imagine and the next thing you know you heard this barrage of fire, and it lasted for -- i know the gunfire must have lasted for 15 to 20 minutes. >> i want to show the map. the map on the left-hand side of the screen, she was at the second location. it's listed on the map there as the navy reserves ons centerful right along the riverfront. >> that's correct. right on the river. >> my understanding is you wouldn't have been able to see. you were mostly hearing. >> we heard the gunfire, because of at the demographics and the way the land lies and there's a lot of trees you could not see anything. i it would only be one who was
12:41 pm
within the river park that could actually see the perpetrator. >> there's a wooded area nearby there as well. right? >> it is completely wooded. i mean, there's a large line of trees that go through there so there's a lot of places for someone to hide or -- you know, to try to elude police officers, but i have to give it to the police department, they were there, they were there quick and they took care of the problem, apparently. >> you're on point and my memory of the park, it's a beautiful place, and to have families on a summer day wouldn't be a weird thing. >> absolutely. you have chattanooga is a tourist town. you have a beautiful riverfront. you have a beautiful riverpark and you have a lot of visitors that come in, a lot of family, a lot of children that would be in that area. because to the naval reserve is
12:42 pm
not that far from actually where everyone can congregate in the picnic area. so for us and for me, that is a very scary thing that just happened. >> well, i'm certain it was for everyone there. thank you so much for speaking with us again. glad you're well. >> well, you know, i just pray for these families that -- of these marines these, brave men that lost their lives, and i just have to give a shoutout to police here in the city of chattanooga. they did a phenomenal job and treat-+ófp us so well. they took very good care of us. they made sure that we were safe. so, you have to give it to them. they did a phenomenal job. >> there's no doubt about that. marilyn, how much -- hutchison. the authorities are not being specific how the gunman met his end but the sequence of events is interesting to hear it from the reporting of the

12:48 pm
we don't know this guy's brown. the that said the authorities said we should expect these sort of thing. >> that's right. and many of the authorities are looking at not only what isis but that what the activities are between the various groups that sworn allegiance to isis or seem to be fellow travelers withisis. so they have some areas to look at and they're all through the proverbial lone wolves, people acting a lone and might be doing something like that's pause they feel a need to do that. so it's a time when the facilities like recruiting centers have to be on alert and take as much extra precaution as they possibly can. >> the authorities said they had nothing to indicate that anything was imminent there. >> right. and that is usually what happens in a case like this. you won't know that a specific place is going to be attacked in spite of all the money we spend and all the efforts we make in both intelligence and law enforcement. it's very hard to predict these
12:49 pm
