rammed through the gates and opened fire. others helped colleagues get to safety. in the end one sailor and four marines lost their lives. john? >> reporter: we have a much clearer picture of what happened last thursday when mohammed abdulezeez decided to go on a murderous rampage. it was confirmed he pulled off the drive by shooting and drove ten minutes down the highway to the reserve center where fbi special ryn hold picks up the story. >> he crashed through the gate and the shooter exited his vehicle with a handgun and rifle and ammunition. a service member from inside of the facility opened fire on him firing several rounds with him. >> from there, the shooter entered the building where he

shot and wounded smith. he fired at targets and exited in the gated motor pool area where he shot and killed four marines. we know he viewed sermons from the clerics. and wrote about martyrdom. they have not found a direct link with him and terrorist group. >> we believe he is a home grown extremist and acted on his own that day. and entered in the facility on his own and no indication that anybody else assisted him on that day. >> reporter: you will notice twice on that day, and leaving open the possibility of whether or not he might have had help or influence leading up to his murderous rampage. to that end, the fbi wants to

talk to his uncle. abdulezeez who is held by jordan officials since last friday. they want to know what he was doing when he stayed a number of months back in 2014. the fbi has not completed their questioning, but we should find out if there is more of a connection to the terrorist groups or radical groups. one more point, jon, as we finish out here. that service member not fired at abdulezeez inside of the reservist center with what we believe is a prohibited weapon there is a good chance he could have stayed in the building where 20 marines were at 29 palm. he gone left instead of right he

i am sorry we are back on the same issue and not celebrating jason's release. tell us a little about the action that the washington post tried to take with the u.n. today. >> we have been waiting a year for the release. he's been in the worst prison and he's an innocent man and should be released and we waited all this time and we decided it is an appropriate time to petition the u.n. in the council. and we have taken legal action pause we have seen no response from the iranian government. >> why not do it six months ago? why today? why wait for a year into his imprisonment? >> we pursued all available channels to us from the beginning. we thought in the beginning because he had done nothing wrong that the iranians would recognize that and release him

on the own. and hoped our efforts through the diplomatic channels might have affect and hoping that the u.s. government's discussion with iran alongside the nuclear talks might have affect. now we have a nuclear accord between the administration and the iranian government and other governments as well but jason hasn't been released. we decided it is an mroept time to take action and. >> into a legal and advisarial relationship with iowa ran. >> what happens next? >> this goes before the working group. and they notify iran which is permitted to have a response. and then the group of five experts evaluate the situation and come to a judgment about jason's condition and whether or

not iran violated international law. >> is it binding and say iran is violating international law can they be forced to release them? >> nothing in the u.n. forces anybody to do anything. but iran is a member of the u.n. and participated in the process and there are findings that iran violated human rights and there has been a response on iran's part. we hope that the international pressure would lead to jason's release promptly. >> marte, as mentioned jason's final story, i mentioned it on the air, it was interesting about american baseball taking place in iran and shoes his work there. the iranian government has all sorts of allegations against him. what sort of stories was he working on for the post and what is he like? >> he is a humble human being.

and his interest in iran is from a personal heritage. his father was from iran. and he went there and wrote about ordinary people and the pressures and kinds of challenges that they face. and he wrote about the normal diplomatic and political matters in iran and the economic pressures in iran. and he wanted to focus on ordinary people and the concerns they and what their ordinary lives were f(mlike. >> what kind of support have you received from the administration? do you feel you have received enough support from the u.s. government in your efforts to try to get him out of prison? >> we've met with the highest level officials in the u.s. government and they expressed support all along. and brought up his case continually with the iran officials in the nuclear talks
