12:12 pm
large land mass. they have a land mass larger right now than great britain. they control. they're ruthless and vicious. and here in the united states they have true use of social media, they have really mastered how to appeal to different types. on one happened, they're ablend they get people on the fringes of society and they are slightly deranged and homicidal and we've seen them, for instance attack police officers with a hatchet in new york. we've seen them attack the parliament up in canada. these are people who are -- isis is able to contact them. others are able to reach are actual followers of isis and we saw in new york recently we had right before the fourth of july we had five different individuals arrested in the new york metropolitan area who were followers -- who were, you know followers of isis.
12:13 pm
so this is something that as director comey said there are threats all over the country. but isis is really able to communicate directly through the gate -- you know, the use of social media with people who are both deranged and are lone wolves and others who are actual followers of isis. >> well the latest directive seems to be saying directly to followers right now that even if you cannot travel to the middle east just kill where you are. so what impact do you think that's having right now on followers here in the u.s.? >> yeah isis is urging people in effect to kill in place. and that means -- i would say the main targets are anyone who is in uniform, police officers military personnel, and they are -- they are the targets. and they have to constantly be on their guard whether it's an army recruiting station, whether it's a police station, whether it's a police officer walking a beat whether it's a cop sitting in a patrol car, they are all now targets of -- of isis.
12:14 pm
and also they are using improvised explosive devices so they can put them in, you know large areas. so this is -- al qaeda never really focussed on getting individuals to carry out attacks here in the u.s. there were some self-starters and some lone wolves but isis is actually directly communicating with people in this country urging them urging them to carry out attacks. when i say directly communicate, some of the direct communications. others just, like directives that they put over the internet and they're being followed. >> but what makes this so frustrating and this is what i'm wondering as well how do we stay one step ahead particularly when we're hearing on the internet they are communicating in so-called dark zones where our folks are not able to get to those sites and cut through those encryption codes so much what is taking place on our end, we may be a step behind.

12:16 pm
every case there is some -- someone who knows about it or hears about it but doesn't come forward. >> really quickly, i also understand new reports now that isis may be using drones loaded with explosives to be used at open sites where there are gatherings for football games, for example, or concerts that type of thing. what are you hearing on your end in terms of that possibility and that threat? >> you know, uma, i really can't comment on that other than to say we have to be ready for any and all threats from isis. they are very unconventional. they think outside the box. they're always trying to stay one step ahead of us. and they are entirely ruthless. and unlike some organizations some of their violence they actually -- they put it on the internet. they want to highlight how destructive and homicidal they can be. so any time of explosive attack, dronel drone, otherwise, we have to definitely definitely be on our guard. >> congressman king thank you
