i'm bill o'reilly. we have a special tonight. we have kate steinle's family. by all account, kate was a fine young woman grew up in pleasanton outside san francisco, earned an education degree. kate loved to travel exploring cultures around the world. she was charitable working with foundations. coming up. kate was a caring and generous person. her parents set up a fund close to kate's heart. we'll have that in a few minutes. jim steinle, kate's father and his sullivan her mother. mrs. sullivan what do you want the world to know about kate? >> well she was not only beautiful but a very soulful person. a lot of depth, a lot of

spirituality always from a young age. i think that's what's helping to give us the strength that we've conjured up here in this terrible terrible situation. i feel her strength still with me. >> you have a very close family and kate was -- even though she's a professional woman, lived outside the home -- she was close to both of you, correct? >> correct. >> yes, yes. she would come over quite occasionally and visit with us. >> and the relationship that you had with kate was one of mutual respect. you hear a lot about families these days that don't get along. looks like your family was extremely close and supportive of each other. >> very much so. very much so. in the last three weeks, because

of our situation of moving kate had spent a lot of time here with us. had spent nights sleepingrecently she and i had taken a nap together. when i came out of yoga class wednesday, she was waiting for me outside the room. just very, very close. totally in contact all the time. >> she was helping you out on the move. i want to get that example across for younger people in america that your home had a lot of love in it. that makes this situation even more painful. mr. steinle, can you tell us what happened that night? pick it up when you met kate. what happened? >> well a friend of mine here visiting of liz and i's was here visiting. she hadn't been in the city so we thought we'd go in the city just to visit.

it was extremely hot out here so we headed to the city. we gave kate a call and she met with us. we walked around and did different things and laughed and went to the ferry building and came out and decided to walk down the pier. stopped at the pier and enjoyed the beauty of san francisco and the day that its been and was. and we turned around and came back. once we came and um we heard a shot and kate went down and the rest we all know what happened then. >> what did she say before she went down? >> help me dad. >> and you had no idea what was happening at that point? >> none whatsoever.

we heard a pop, and shortly after that kate went down. >> did you -- >> it had -- we had kind souls come over and you know gave her mouth to mouth and did all they could. some other kind souls came over and helped us until the paramedics got there. >> did you see the man who shot your daughter? >> no. no. we were all -- everyone in that particular area was just concentrating on kate and what had happened. it was pretty obvious something pretty serious happened. that was our response was to her. we weren't looking around or anything like that. >> now mrs. sullivan the outpouring to you and your family and mr. steinle has been unbelievable. tell us about that. >> just the food the cards, the offers for help. you know the people that have

come from very far to come and give us condolences. her second grade teacher came from auburn. do you know it's been just absolutely unbelievable how many lives she touched. the cards, the flowers, the service, the memorial was -- i mean i was just taken away with the amount of people and everything. it was overwhelming. just nothing you -- you know you can't prepare for anything like this but it was astonishing. it is astonishing. we are hoping to carry this forward. we're hoping for some good to come out of all of this. >> that's where we come in. in our next segment, we're going to tell everyone what we're trying to do. mr. ll this outpouring for your daughter was it of any comfort to you? >> oh my yes. more than comfort.

we're a family strong in faith. that in itself kept us strong. kate was faithful and believed. she had a great spirit. the thing willliz says that the amount of people -- she worked at dubai. she flew in just to be at the memorial service. people from india. we just -- we knew kate had touched a lot of people. you had to meet her to get that but -- no it was a strength. the calls that people hear all the time. you can't do this alone regardless of how strong your faith and how tough you might be. we're just astonished. not that surprised i guess because kate being kate but without all the love around the

exclusive interview with kate steinle's parents. rejoining us now from california kate's parents jim steinle and liz sullivan. i was talking to you over the weekend. you said you support kate's law. why? >> i support kate's law because it would be a legacy in her name. her death would not go unnoticed. we're a political family keep up with politics because we're citizens of the united states. we feel the federal state and cities laws are here to protect us. we feel that this particular set of circumstances and people involved the different agencies let us down and we're tired of finger pointing and

want action. if kate's law saves one person it's all for good. >> that's very well said will mr. steinle. mrs. sullivan that's exactly what i was trying to do. if it saves one american one american family that does not have to go through mrs. sullivan what you are going through now, then kate's law is worth it. it should be done. it's only fair. our laws are supposed to protect us not only from foreign if he longs but domestic if he longs. we can do this. i think it will happen. that was one of the reasons i wanted you to come on tonight. do you have any thoughts about it mrs. sullivan? >> you just want it to be a good solid law that won't have holes in it. i'm sure there will be a lot of posturing back and forth. i had no idea how many people

amazing. my prayers for them and for kate. it's nice to hear her story even after she's left us. >> now juan the parents as you pointed out are supports of kate's law. we're going to get them involved in the writing of the legislation. are you going to support it? >> i am taken with the idea we need to get criminals off the street. i don't have any doubt about that bill. you've got a situation we as american people need to change the law first to make sure that it's not a matter of a detainee memo but an actual legal warrant for anybody that is in custody many this the united states who's in custody and illegal if he long. a warrant is issue sod there's no chance no misunderstanding -- >> just so everybody understands mary katherine, the way the law

should come down, and the way we're going to lobby for it to come down is that once a person comes back after being deported and they're picked up again, you run it through the federal system. everybody has got to be run through the federal system. if it comes back that you're a convicted if he long eded felon in the united states there's no wiggle room. you have to be charged. you have to get the 10 second 23rd. there are laws on the books not being enforced. this isn't happening which is why this thug could get back six times here. that's the intent of the law. go. >> right. i think it's perfectly rational. sounds like a good idea to raise stakes on every entry in the united states. what's going on now stakes are not high enough for folks coming in. you end up with sanctuary
