12:00 pm
and you can get my takes on my facebook page and at foxnews.com. >> aid like to thank you for being part of "the real story" for a monday. now we'll head over to the next studio, because john scott is in for shep. >> the president versus those who want to be president. today president obama is firing back at some of the g.o.p. contenders, plus, new poll numbers both nationwide and in the all-important early voting states 'the president talking terrorism in africa. he is pledging some u.s. support for take on extremists, but he is warning african leaders this battle is theirs to fight. that's as we get rolling on the -- get the troubling word, i should say on the terror front. officials in one nation say they've busted more than a thousand suspected isis extremists in the past three days. now nato is set to hold an emergency meeting to talk strategy against the islamic state.
12:01 pm
>> i'm john scott in for shep. president obama is responding to what he calls outrageous attacks from some of the republicans who want his job. including former arkansas governor and ex-fox news host mike huckabee, and his reference to the holocaust. governor huckabee was talking about the nuclear deal with iran and said the agreement would, quote, take the israelis and basically march them to the doctor of the oven. of course that's a reference to nazi death camps. president obama responded during his trip to africa. >> the particular comments of mr. huckabee are i think, part of just a general pattern that we have seen that is -- would be considered ridiculous if it weren't so sad. >> mike huckabee shot back that it was ridiculous and sad that president obama doesn't take
12:02 pm
iran's threats to destroy israel seriously. president obama suggested governor huckabee was trying to take attention away from his republican rival, donald trump. the latest polling shows trump leading in new hampshire and nationally in new hampshire home have first presidential primary, and nbc news survey shows trump leading with 21%. the only others in double digits are former florida governor jeb bush, and wisconsin governor scott walker. ohio governor john kashich who only entered the race last week jumped to seven percent. the same poll shows scott walker and donald trump statistically tied in iowa. site of the first presidential contest. general jeb bush is the only other candidate polling in double digits there. nationally a cnn/orc survey shows trump leading jeb bush within the margin of error a stackal tie. scott walker the only other candidate in double digits. we'll get into the democratic polling in a moment. first ed henry is here. president obama did not just go after mike huckabee.
12:03 pm
>> that's right. he went after ted cruz after donald trump. what you're seeing is a president as a lame duck who is getting tired of these run attacks on him. he is feeling like he can let loose help went after ted cruz for saying at one point recently he now believes ted cruz does, that the leading state sponsor of terror is president obama, not iran, because of this nuclear deal. he also the president did took aim at donald trump over the statements over john mccain, here's the president. >> when you get rhetoric like this maybe it gets attention and maybe this is just an effort to push mr. trump out of the headlines. but it's not the kind of leadership that is needed for america right now. >> republicans have gotten plenty of licks on the president. ted cruz saying the russians are openly laughing at the president and his foreign policy, and donald trump, you can check his twitter feed.
12:04 pm
any hour he is taking a shot at the president. >> the chairman of the republican part has a mostage for donald trump. >> saying enough is enough, reince priebus saying he wants donald trump ump and a candidates to say they will not launch third party bid if they don't get the nomination. what is behind this an interview donald trump had with the hill newspaper, saying maybe he would run and launch a third party bid. there's visions of horrors of the ross perot experience from 1992, pulling votes away from the republican nominee. it was amusing donald trump said the rnc is suddenly being very nice him to and donald trump feels, you just look at the polls, he might not have to launch a third party bid. he is leading in all the major polls. >> a lot of people are surprised. yesterday, stick with it. senator bernie sanders is closing in on hillary clinton's lead for the democratic nomination those key states. put it is not exactly dead heat.
12:05 pm
the survey shows clinton leads by 13-points in the key state of new hampshire. that is outside the margin of error, but keep in mind, earlier this year she had a 56-point lead over the vermont senator. you can see clinton has a bigger lead in iowa but still down from february. so, back to ed henry now. hillary clinton is campaigning in iowa today? >> she and is got reporter questions about why is it in poll after poll what we're seeing is you're in the lead but voters don't trust you. she knows it's about the e-mail controversy, in large part. that blew up again over the weekend and she pushed back on that by saying she is going to stand up to the middle class. >> i have a proven track robert i have a commitment to being a strong fighter on behalf of iowa's families and families across america, and i think that voters will not only see that but will vote for me because of it. >> the problem for her, though is over the weekend in iowa, as
12:06 pm
well, hillary clinton said, again she didn't knowingly send or receive classified information on e-mail server. the fact is two inspectors generals, nonpartisan umpires, are something i something different. >> if you're a politician you live and dibyoff favorable raiding and that is not looking good. >> underwater for the first time in more than a decade. have to go back to 2007. her favorability rating slipped from 48% in april down to 43%. her unfavorability rating up to 46%. the bottom line is you put that together with the fact that as we mentioned the top voters don't find her honest and trustworthy, that's a very dangerous brew for someone who is leading but has bernie sanders and others nipping at her heels. >> interesting to watch. let's talk about the g.o.p. race and bring in rebecca burg reporter for real clear politics itch want to start with john kashich. when he got into the race, one to the last to climb in,
12:07 pm
everybody wondered if there's room for him. so far looks like there is. >> especially in new hampshire, john. we're seeing kashich now in fourth place, as high as fourth is in in one poll in new hampshire. so we're seeing that maybe these concerns about kashich not having room in the republican field are being put to rest. what he is doing will is combining a lot of the very positive aspects of other republican candidates. so, he takes the establishment appeal of jeb bush a form governor like scott walker, or a current governor, rather, like scott walker, who has gotten a lot done in a swing state ohio, very important swing state for republicans. former chairman of the house budget committee, where he balanced the federal budget so brings a lot to the table and on top of that, personal, wise, he has the straight talking personality that republicans right now are finding really appealing and that's part of why we see donald trump doing so well, why chris christie was
12:08 pm
doing so well and kashich is trying to latch on to that in new hampshire. finally he does really really well in the town hall setting which is a cornerstone of any campaign in the granite state. >> is kashich hurting any one g.o.p. candidate or grabbing support from all of them? >> it likes right now like he's kind of taking from a few different pools because on the one hand as i mentioned he has that establishment appeal for a lot of more moderate republicans but he is also someone who is personally very religious, talks about religion on the campaign trail and so might have some appeal there for evangelicals, and he talks a lot about balancing the federal budget, and he might be able to appeal to tea party voters. the biggest trouble is how to differentiate himself with so many candidates. he might have a shot. >> you have to do well in iowa and new hampshire. how are his numbers looking in those states? >> well, he is a lot weaker in iowa, john and so that is going to be a big problem for kashich
12:09 pm
is maintaining some sort of momentum if he doesn't do well in the iowa caucuses. what we will see with this republican field, as big as it is, is probably a very drawn-out republican primary process. so, even if he doesn't do well in iowa or south carolina, if he does well in new hampshire, that might be enough to keep him going until you get to the southern states that have their primary, maybe even to super tuesday, and what it really comes down to is all this super pac fundraising, all the money you have to keep your campaign going, and he is doing okay on that front. >> mike huckabee drew fire directly from the president with that comment about the iran nuclear deal leading the israelis right to the door of the oven. he double-downed on that remark, hasn't he? >> he has. what that indicates is that this was completely calculated on huckabee's part. this wasn't just aship of the tongue. he thought his base would respond well if he used that sort of rhetoric and it might be
12:10 pm
helping huckabee that the president is going after him. that's exactly what huckabee want is to be seen as a sort of enemy or foil to president obama and this iran deal. he is really speaking, john to an evangelical audience here, and this is something, even though a lot of people have really criticized the worrying he used, this is an idea that is very appealing to many of those evangelical voters and he did have a plan when he said this. >> real quick look at hillary's prospects you say she has a couple of problems, namely that voters don't necessarily trust her and don't necessarily think that she identifies with their problems. >> right. and so you and ed touched on this a little bit in discussing the knew polling from nbc, but this is a persistent problem in the polls for hillary clinton and granted, i should note that part of this is just naturally what you see when someone goes from being secretary of state,
12:11 pm
out of the realm of politics, back into the campaign sphere. your favor ability is going down but her numbers issue especially when it comes to trustworthiness and honesty are so far underwater and especially relative to some of the other candidates who we're seeing bernie sanders people trust him, think he is honest. seeing that with republicans, marco rubio and scott walker have very high ratings in that regard. so hillary clinton has not addressed in public while she thinks she is get these low marks on these two qualities, and she is going to need. to she is going to need to address this in some substantive way because she just hasn't done it yet. >> rebecca berg, real clear politics. thank you. >> thank you. >> the navy is now joining the search for two florida teens who disappeared while fishing in the atlantic ocean. the latest developments and how an nfl legend is getting involved. coming up on fox news deck.

12:15 pm
70 miles off the coast of an inlet in central florida. >> since we moved up the coast into jacksonville, we have extended that search area and currently we have searched the area the size of the state of indiana. >> about 70 miles, i should say -- hundreds of family members classmates and friends took part in a prayer service last night. one of the boy's neighbors, joe name math, said the teens were experienced boaters and joined the family in offering a $100,000 reward in the search. phil keating has the news live. what happened on friday? >> reporter: the last time anyone saw austin stephanos and perry cohen was a full three day ago as they were filling their boat up at a marina around the corner of the jupiter lighthouse. that pumped them $100 of gasoline in the boat and then the boys went out for a day of fishing, presumably through the jupiter inlet and into the
12:16 pm
atlantic ocean even though at least one of the boy's dads said never do that unless there's an adult in the boat. so that's one thing. now, the weather turned very nasty friday afternoon and it's unclear how far out the boys had gone or how long they had been out boating and fishing before the boat capsized. when they're about was found two days later yesterday it was about 200 miles north of here and 70-miles off the coastline. this afternoon a brand new missing poster is being distributed by the families. a couple of key things in there you see the photographs. one is of a fishing cooler and another one is of a life preserver. these are both floatable objects and the parents of the boys believe they were on the boat so they suspect these kids may have been capsized and knocked over but would have found floating devices and could still be floating and alive at this moment. the stepfather of one of the boys explained this afternoon both families drive. >> we don't give up.
12:17 pm
this is about our children. and we believe in them. we know that people have been out there longer. people have survived. we have to keep going. >> reporter: 14 years old both of the kids, may sound young to be off boating by themselves but the parents and family say these kids were very experienced boaters, very experienced fishermen, loved nature and also had a great respect for the power of mother nature. >> the search now includes walking the beaches phil? >> reporter: yes speaking of nfl legend, joe name namath. neighbor and friends of the family. joining police officers today walking up and down the beaches inch fact the families are appealing to anybody who lives along the coast in florida as well as georgia, to get out there today. the they're calling it hash tag miracle monday. walk the sands and look for any clues or signs that would help solve the mystery what happened
12:18 pm
to the boys, and the coast guard has planes and helicopters. the navy has boats on the group. coast guard has several boats and customs and border appreciation also searching this area, the size of the state of indiana, out due owes of jacksonville -- due east of jacksonville. the further north the gulf stream take you the colder the water gets, and even if they're floating, hype thermal starting to get -- hypothermia starting to get serious. >> thank you. employs in maryland say two people are dead and six are hurt after a boat crashed just outside baltimore. the boat struck a concrete wall that protects a bridge yesterday morning. the two who died were both from the area. as the boat's operator is one of the survivors. investigators say they are still working to determine what caused the crash. one of our allies is pushing a plan to create a kind of oasis from isis. can that happen in syria? ahead, the dials on the calls for an isis-free zone.

12:24 pm
they go right now. they seem to be gravitating along the border, to the west. >> as for why the u.s. is not consider a no-fly zone the state department official said that basically the reason is that there is not a need because coalition forces are flying unopposed strikes against isis in syria and john, defense official gave our pentagon producer a little bit more granularity on that specific point, saying, quote we're not at war with assad. we're at war with isis. >> i guess the situation gets even more complicated after turkey reportedly attacked some of the kurds who are fighting against isis. >> in fact they did and the u.s. has been supporting a group of kurdish forces with airstrikes as they fight isis in syria. that group claims that the turkish army shelled and hit its positions on sunday. take a look at this video here. the u.s. military does not need to deploy ground troops to help african countries fight terrorism. the word from president obama. he spoke in ethiopia on the latest leg of this african tour. >> we're doing things we can do uniquely but does not require us putting boots on the ground. that's the model that we're talking about. and eatopenways an outstanding partner in that process one of the most effective militaries on the continent. >> president obama is the first sitting u.s. president to visit ethiopia. human rights activists blasted the trip, saying it legitimatizes an oppressive government in elects in may the ruling party won every seat in eatopen a ya's parliament. president obama called on the political lead are to stop cracking down on journalists. kevin corke is live. kevin? >> reporter: made for a very interesting conversation today
12:32 pm
in that news conference. i was actually able to question the president on a number of issues and i found it very interesting to listen to his answer, especially as it relates to what he might do or be willing to do moving forward to tackle the problem of terrorism here in this part of the world. east africa is a crucial strategic partner for the united states but as you pointed out between groups like a.l. shabab and boko haram they devastate different parts the continent and you heard today they talked about the incredible need for strengthening regional security cooperation and counterterrorism. just over the weekend we saw al-shabaab claim responsibility for a bombing a hotel in mogadishu, show malla an attack that claimed the lives of more than a dozen itch asked the president if he felt like it would be important to have american troops or maybe trainers get here and join the
12:33 pm
fight. he pushed back immediately and said, we not only are already fighting, we can do it without putting more o of men at risk on the ground. >> some in the press have noted that al-shabaab is still here. they say how can that be a model if you have bombs going off in the point i was making at that time is not that defeating any of these terrorist networks is easy, or that the problems in somalia are completely solved. >> reporter: the model he is talking about is making sure that african countries lead the fight with u.s. cooperation along the way, and i think it's also relevant to point out quickly, john, that you can never hope to completely eradicate a single group a lope wolf or even a movement necessarily without the cooperation of the people who actually live here and call this area home, and that seemed to be the overarching message the president delivered today in his comments. >> kevin corke, thank you.
12:34 pm
let's bring in christian whiten former state department author of "part power: between diplomacy and war." the horn of africa has long been a mess. seems to have gotten worse in recent years. what do you think of the president's approach here? >> well, don't think anyone would begrudge him for saying that's is a problem that witness bell worse and linger. after all this has been a problem for the united states. think back to 1993 with the blackhawk down incident. but there are some troubling signs that call into question the u.s. approach. you have this hotel in mogadishu, bombed. you had last -- in 2013 the attack on a mall in ten ya by al-shabaab targeting westerners spinningly. you have al-shabaab moving into northeastern kenya and pushing christians out. it's not going particularly well but then again there is this issue that there's a no appetite whatsoever for more troops or at least usf troops playing a direct role.
12:35 pm
>> even small numbers of boots on the ground can play a pretty huge role in directing airstrikes, in gathering intelligence, that kind of thing. >> that's right. the u.s. does have a significant presence. it's focused on the entire horne of africa and we have willing partner thursday in the form of kenya and eggopen ya where the president is today. one problem, the president says he wanted to get away from playing whack-a-mole with the u.s. military. nor never going to permanently defeat this until you can call the enemy be name and in his remark today with the prime minister of ethiopia saying again this is violence extremism. that would be like all the fight wes had in southeast asia in the 60s and 70s and never mentioning communism. we neat to name i islamism and cut the intake of people who describe to that islamist political view. >> for instance in kenya some of the most frequent attacks targets of attacks, are christians. >> well, that's right and this is a problem. we have seen across the region,
12:36 pm
that crip -- christians are being judged to genocide and push out of places where they lived for hundreds and thousands of years. no one expected somalia to straighten up and fly right tomorrow. but if you look at the speed with which isis and other jihaddist threats have surged it is swan concerning that al-shabaab seems to be having a pretty good year so far, and it's not as though we need to have a iwo jima style invasion of forces in southern somalia. a few additional trainers and getting rid of this false distinction of boots on the ground versus no boots on the ground. >> what do you think of the notion that the president is legitimatizing the leadership of ethiopia by visiting there? >> it's interesting where he chooses to raise humidity rights issues. gay rights in kenya. we have to partner with countries who are willing to partner with us. hey have a very good hoyt of pushing repressive regime inside
