candidates viafight for a spot. donald bush and walker are in the top three but a recent surge by kasich is putting him in a three-way tie with governor's chris christie and rick perry. why is that significant? only the top 10 in the national polls complete on the thursday 9 p.m. stage. those not making the cut appear in the undercard debate earlier in the day. christie and perry if they expect to be on the main stage. >> i will be there thursday night. >> you will make the top ten? does it matter? >> i think it is an important first step. it is not a determining step but
9:02 am
important and we will be happy to be there. >> the top 10 is a good place to be but this is a long game. i spent a lot of time in new hampshire and iowa. one debate is not going to make or break a candidate. >> i don't know about that rick perry in the last presidential debate perry didn't do well. i think it is critical to be in the top 10 at this stage. >> especially because the ratings are going to be huge to quote donald trump -- >> ha! i talk today a lot of people when are not political, friends of mine tuning in. we want to see these guys together. fox always has good ratings. but seeing how donald trump is going to interact with the rest of the field there is a tune in
9:03 am
factor from non-political people to see if he will behave himself or throw bombs? how are the other candidates going to interact and react to him? it is going to be irresistable television and i think it is an important threshold to me. >> historically if you are not part of the top 10 if you are that far down, it is going to be tough to break into the top 10 position. all of these guys you see them vying to get into the top 10 and one gal it is important they are on the stage. >> guy if you have not hired you to pitch our ratings, we should because that was beautiful. >> thank you. >> if donald trump has a misstep and blows up look at the
9:04 am
polling from mama's university. as we get closer to the debate almost a 2-1 advantage over his latest rival. 26%. if he has a misstep that is a huge potential support base that goes elsewhere. so you suddenly have someone picking up three, four or five percent. >> most people would have thought his remarks like over john mccain's war record would tarnish his image. but this poll was taken in the week following those remarks about senator john mccain. what could he do to tarnish his image with voters because those are not even having an impact
9:05 am
and he is going up in the polls >> trump said i am not prepping for the debate. this is me and i don't change my answers on polling. that is true. i don't see donald trump changing his style on thursday night. what i do envision is the rest of the candidates on that stage one hoping he blows up and two ganging up on him. >> i think they'll need to be noticed. scott walker needs to attract attention. and rubio and rand paul where are they? they vanished. i think people are trying to see if they can shine enough people will be able to take their eyes off donald trump and pay attention to what they are saying. one weakness on trump's part is specific. he talked in generality and a lot of conservatives are seeing if he can bring policy specific do is the table. >> with that many people on the stage i would advise donald
9:06 am
trump not to get specific but with that mean people on the stage he will have to keep it top level and be punchy and continue to do what he is doing because it is working. donald trump may be dominating the headlines but that could be helping one other candidate. jeb bush. mr. trump's ways have made it all but impossible for those vying to be the alternative to mr. bush to emerge and easier for mr. bush to position himself as the serious and thoughtful alternative to a candidate who is up ended the early nominating process. what do you think about this guy? do you think there is a point that trump is sort of sucking the air out of those potential jeb competitors? i think that is the one bright spot but if that is all you have as jeb bush you better work more. >> jeb bush and hillary clinton benefit from the rise of donald
9:07 am
trump. it is two-fold. one is donor. a lot of the donor class is terrified of donald trump and goes racing to jeb bush as the safe harbor. if you are a more let's say creditable conservative al alternative to jeb bush, your message is not getting out. we are talking about donald trump. and being unable to separate yourself from the pack and go head-to-head with jeb bush the bush people have been thrilled everyone is talking about trump while he's raising money and sailing along with establishment support. >> trump is offering such a contrast to a jeb bush and that is what the conservative base wants. they are sick of somebody who is up there and speaks in poll tested platitude. they want someone like trump.
9:08 am
so i am not sure it is a great thing for jeb bush because if is such contrast. >> you wonder when the other candidates are damaging themselves by going after donald trump. at what point do you just jump on the bandwagon and ride it? rand paul said in response to trump surging in the pole i think it is a temporary loss of sanity. we had a handful of presidential hopefuls on the couch and when you talk to the other candidates about trump they seem exhausted from answering all of the donald trump questions. it is like they don't want to go there. at what point do you tell them politically to embrace donald trump and have it work for you? >> or have a sense of humor. >> they are so jealous. >> they should be grateful people are tuned in with this intensity. i was on vacation on the west
9:09 am
coast and every cab driver is what do you think about donald trump? no matter what their political leanings people are tuning in because of donald trump. doesn't mean they love him. but the other candidates should be grateful in that sense. >> very quickly i think to sandra's question they should take notes. and follow donald trump's lead. he is an earned media machine and tapping into the something the base wants. why are nay thought doing it? >> jeb bush worry about yourself and why you are not resonating with people and donald trump is. maybe if you were presenting yourself in an exciting way you would be in front. >> i still think john kasich a dark horse. donald trump is not ruling out a third party run telling this week it all depends on the gop.
9:10 am

9:11 am
but if is worse was the spread wasn't as tight as when you add donald trump. he takes points away from both sides. >> i think he knows it would be a disaster if he did that. but he doesn't want to give the gop that right now. i don't think he should have to pledge that today. i don't think any of the candidates should say republican establishment if you don't back me don't worry i will get out of your way. no let them sweat it out. it would be the establishment that wants the security from him and i don't think he wants to give that to anyone. he wants to be the guy saying i don't know what i am doing tomorrow. these are the principles i believe in, i will do my best to get collected and if i don't win this way who knows >> i think it would be foolish for donald trump to talk about a third party run because it would
9:12 am
irritate the gop base that want to win the white house and he might lose them if he talks this way. >> that will benefit more than anyone hillary clinton if there is a republican nominee and donald trump running third party you have president hillary clinton. he may not have a problem with that because he is a big fan and donated thousands of dollars to her and called her terrific and said she was doing a good job as secretary of the state. so it could be the biggest donation he has given her among the very american. but donald trump does what is best for donald trump not necessarily the party or the ideas he reports to. >> i love the elementary way in which he says everything. and i don't mean talking down but if these republicans don't treat me right -- it is the stres stressor. >> you know what he is thinking. >> he like as good threat. >> quick reminder this thursday fox news brings you
