thanks, everybody, for joining us on this tuesday morning. we've got kimberly in for elisabeth and clayton in for brian. good to see all of you guys. >> thank you very much. kind of a rainy day here in new york city. we start with the weather. >> we begin with a fox news alert. dangerous weather across our nation. heavy rains in florida, flooded roads, stranding drivers and forcing people to evacuate their homes. >> dramatic video capturing the moment five women are rescued from an elderly care facility. look at that right there. >> steve, it was a similar scene in a nearby mobile home park. at least 40 others pulled from water there. and what should have been a fun summer night at the circus in new hampshire turns to chaos as 60-mile-per-hour winds yanked the tent right from the ground. two people are now dead. and 22 others injured as tent poles were sent flying through the air. >> the two dead have not yet been identified, but early reports indicate they are a grandfather and his young granddaughter who were at the circus to have a night of fun.

>> sad. the new hampshire governor now sending disaster response teams in to investigate this terrible tragedy. >> joining us right now is brandon eisham who was under the circus tent with his two sons when it collapsed last night about 5:30. brandon, thank you very much for joining us. tell us what it was like inside the tent just before it lifted up and fell back down? >> it was pretty hectic. they knew we weren't shave anymore inside the tent right before it come down. it was scary. >> who didn't know it was safe anymore? >> the circus crew. right before it come down, they told everybody to get out. >> and i imagine with that tent, there's not exactly an orderly exit procedure for an emergency like this. what was the procedure to try to get everyone out of there? were you just running for the open spaces? >> luckily enough when the tent did come down, me and my family had a direct open space outside.

the latest on this. good morning, rich. >> good morning. and debating on fox news thursday fight, the top ten candidates in the average of five national polls. as for who may be in that top ten, here's one poll's take. fox news has donald trump with the lead followed by jeb bush, scott walker, ben carson, ted cruz, chris christie and john kasich round out the top ten with carly fiorina, rick santorum. the candidates sold their messages at a new hampshire forum last night. >> 71% of federal spending right now is between entitlements and debt service. it's not the american people who are failing the entitlement system, it's the leaders of our country who are failing the american people by not telling them the truth. >> i would take the advice of the military very seriously. we feed a strategy first. this president two times has admitted that we don't have a strategy as it relates to isis. pretty amazing. >> how long have we been talking

event. of course, right on center stage will be donald trump. a brand-new fox news poll came out last night. 26% of republican primary voters like him best at this stage. what's interesting, though, is his favorability which had not been great. it's now above 50%, and that is amazing. >> that is a big point, and a lot of pollsters keeping a close eye on that because you hear a lot of talk about that during the elections cycle about favorability, how people are viewed, what their negatives are. so he's making gains in all the right direction. he's got the momentum, and that's why this debate's going to be fab nascinating. we've got something from frank luntz. >> he sat down with a group of voters. donald trump was not at that event, but certainly he was the topic of conversation. what is it about trump that's resonating with you? is it his straight talk? do you want more policies from him? is america ready for this? take a listen to these answers. they're pretty amazing. >> this is a live sitcom we're watching here. you'd better watch what you ask

cabins and then stealing weapons. he's accused of killing a cabin owner and holding three hikers hostage for more than an hour. two sheriff's deputies were injured when they confronted that suspect on saturday. they are expected to be okay. we'll watch this story throughout the morning. and new overnight, another manhunt for a cop killer in memphis now coming to an end. 29-year-old tremaine wilbourn turning himself in alongside his family and an attorney. he was wanted in the murder of police officer sean bolton, a marine and a five-year veteran of that force. bolton was killed on saturday night after he interrupted what appeared to be a drug deal. wilbourn is set to be arraigned later today. and brand-new overnight, a routine training exercise turns deadly at a florida military base. one airman has been killed and another is hurt. in a parachute accident in the panhandle of florida. right now air force officials are not releasing the identities of either service member. the cause of that accident is

under investigation. and you never know what lies beneath until you see it from above. take a look at this. two great white sharks spotted just feet from the shore alongside the massachusetts coastline. the photos were surfacing -- they were taken by researchers about a week ago. scientists say that the shark activity is greater than last year. and that season, by the way, doesn't end until october. look at that thing right off the front of that boat. off the bow of that boat. and those are your headlines. scary for folks on vacation. >> some things are better left unseen. tanks, dro thanks, drone. coming up, a firefighter taking heat but not on the job. all because he set up a gofundme page for a suspended colleague who spoke out against the fdny's hiring policies. then ever wonder what happens to your packages when you're not home? well, this package snatched in broad daylight by that person. i'm sure they'll return it later.

a firefighter's fund-raising effort for a fellow firefighter has been shut down by his bosses. >> yeah, when paul was suspended without pay, anthony henry started a gofundme page to try to make up for his loss of income. the suspension was because he was leaking information about hiring practices that some firefighters gave special treatment to minorities and women. >> our next guest won a u.s. supreme court that challenged the fire department'sromotions process. frank richie is the captain in the new haven, connecticut, fire department and a friend of paul manic's. he's also a contributing editor for "fire engineering" magazine. thanks for being with us this morning. >> good morning. >> so tell us how this got started and where it stands now. >> well, first i'd just like to state that i'm not here on paul's behalf. i'm here because i wrote a blog in "fire engineering" that basically says what is going on here. >> right. because paul mannix didn't like what was going on with the hiring practices of the fire department of new york city where there are, you say, quotas

where you've got to hire a certain number of minorities and a certain number of women. and you and mr. mannix both feel that in many cases they're not qualified. >> well, here's the thing. this isn't a new york city issue. this is an american issue. if you work hard in america, you can succeed. and we need to have equal opportunity for everyone. the fire department and fire engineering, we're very inclusive, but it doesn't mean equal outcomes. when someone calls 911, they don't care whether a woman happens to show up at their house, someone who happens to be black or happens to be hispanic. they just want to be sure that that person is competent to answer the call. and that's all we're asking. >> and yet, of course, there are rules in place about this sort of thing being leaked. he was recently censored for his role in this leaking scandal which i guess you equate to about $30,000? >> i think that's fair. he's a deputy chief within the fire department. >> so was that penalty too

severe? >> well, i think leaking information to the press is one of the pillars of our democracy. where would we be without the free press? >> meaning without the transparency about what's going on. why keep it in secret? >> correct. and here's the thing. a firefighter's performance records is a matter of public concern. i mean, with this on hillary's server, we try to take public documents and hide them from the public. how a firefighter performs is critical to public safety. >> it's a matter of public safety, right. you want to make sure that someone is competent to answer the call emotionally, psychologically, physically able to serve and make sure that they go and they're able to do the job that you don't put another firefighter's life in danger when you're trying to be rescuing somebody to begin with. >> correct. you've got to realize that firefighters and fire officers are making -- they almost have to make perfect decisions based off imperfect information. this isn't a job that you can hand out without regard for merit. there's no time to look anything up in a book. you've got to know what you're

behavioral therapy and child psychotherapist and parenting expert thomas. thank you for being with us on the program. this is a good one. you're talking to a little mama that was 4.0 but went to an all girls school, so i don't know, i may confound the study. so we'll begin with you, dr. tate. what do you think? >> you know, i think that school performance doesn't really have a lot to do with career success. i'm a tefirm believer in the growth mindset. if you didn't do well in school or if you were a cool kid, it doesn't matter. you can continue to accomplish later in life and more about values like kindness, humility, willingness to receive feedback, et cetera. >> thomas? >> i think there's two different types. there's the types that work hard and just don't do well, but they're not very academically inclined and there are those that are unmotivated and don't work hard. and all the research i've ever studied out there shows that the individuals that are motivated regardless of how they did in

school or not are far more likely to be successful later on as adults. >> okay. we've got a little bit of a study here. we've put the full screen up of unpopularity points study. opposite gender friends, 70% more than average gpa 2.6. if opposite gender friends is 30% or less, then the average gpa is 3.0. this is pretty fascinating because it's pretty strong numbers if you want to agree with this study and find it to be valid to say that, in fact, you know, you're benefited more by just having same-sex friends. i guess it's opposite sex can distract you, thomas. >> you know, with the study, a read a lot of the study and what it shows is that the kids that are striving to be popular and fit in are the kids that ten years later seem to be struggling more. and i can see that. i understand that. i tell kids all the time that i counsel, i tell my own kids, what i want you to be is a leader. i don't want you to follow the crowd and try to be like everybody else and be spb thome
