arise. >> we got a lot to discuss this morning. we got three hours to do it. so we start with this. >> first debate and possibly most important debate is in the books. >> while all eyes were on donald trump another candidate stole the spotlight in the early debate. >> fox news chief washington correspondent james rosen is live in cleveland. it was a late debate night. a fiery one james, what do we know today? >> good morning from the quicken loans arena where as you say amongst the thousands of people in the hall and millions watching at home all eyes were on center stage on donald trump, easily far and away the most unconventional front-runner. he hit his stride sometimes in this debate. at times he elicited great applause. at one point he said of the crowd i don't think they like me very much and got off to a rocky start with the audience elite sitting boos when he answered the first question and refused

to agree that he would eventually not support whoever the nominee is and he refused to swear a third-party for the presidency. later to our fox news colleague sean hannity trump explained his reasoning. >> raise your hand right now if you won't make that pledge tonight. >> mr. trump. >> why should i give up that leverage if they don't treat me well. you're talking about the establishment republicans. if they don't treat me well why should i make that pledge. >> now earlier at 5:00 p.m. eastern time by bill hammer, we had what has been described as the happy hour debate. this featured the seven gop presidential candidates who did not make the top tier of polling averages according to major recent polls and there by most accounts the stand out performer was former ceo of hewlett-packard, carly fiorina who described at one point the

two phone calls that she would make on her first day as president in the oval office. >> first one would be to my good friend benjamin netanyahu to assure him we would stand with israel. second would be to the supreme leader of iran and he might not take my phone call but the message is this we'll make it as difficult for you to move money around the global financial system. >> everyone seemed to equipped themselves fairly well. no major fireworks between candidates. we couldn't say that for the primetime debate. we saw chris christie and rand paul go after each other. on my twitter feed the greatest vitriol was not directed at the candidate but at the moderators who seemed to think in some respects we were too tough on the cane, some of them complained we ignored ted cruz

for long stretches or we were too mean to donald trump. fascinating stuff. i thought they did a great job of eliciting the views of the candidates and keeping them to time. >> in terms of total time estimated that cruz got right in the middle, 6:28. trump 10:23. i don't think they have anything to go on that. >> james rosen, thank you very much. regarding the moderators nobody can accuse fox news channels throwing soft balls to the republicans as they have been many times. the reason so many people and the ratings will come out later today, the reason why people watched the debate is donald trump. he's made it interesting. from the get go, where he held up his hand and would not pledge not to run as a third-party candidate, donald trump was donald trump. if you missed it, here are some

have a clue. >> donald trump was donald trump last night. >> he was not nervous and it was so clear when he put his hand up and started talking. maybe i should believe the rhetoric what he was saying before, i've never done this before, i'm new to this. clearly he was somebody that at some level had done this even in his mind before. i just laugh at people who look at last night and say well now it's over. really? have you been watching for the last six weeks? >> do you believe it's a misstep at home whether he raised his hand when he said no i would not support necessarily the person who received the nomination. >> there are a couple of online polls. they are not scientific. "time" magazine has one and the drudge report has one. both of them have -- they said who won the debate last night. by a landslide donald trump won, "time" magazine currently it's at 46% and the drudge report i think is at 52% of you feel that

donald trump is donald trump and won. >> many people believe that marco rubio actually stole the show and came out looking quite presidential and this might explain why. watch. >> how was hillary clinton going to lecture to me living paycheck to paycheck. i was raised paycheck to paycheck. all human life at every stage of development is worthy of protection. that law already exists. it's called the constitution of the united states. i believe every single human being is entitled to the protection of our laws. future generations will look back at this history of our country and call us barbarians for murdering millions of babies. i run for president because i believe that we can't just save the american dream we can expand it to reach more people and change more lives than ever before. that's why i'm asking for your vote. so we can make america greater than it's ever been and make

this century a new american century. >> they say of barack obama, he can deliver a speech but what can he do off the script. marco rubio shoepd he could do both. you couldn't have anticipated some of the questions, some of the rhetoric. i thought he was strong and very comfortable unlike some of the remarks he made when he did the post-game on the state of the union address. i thought he wanted to go on for another hour. >> he was precise. he answered the questions as well. jeb bush did a great job laying out policy. >> a lot of people are saying this morning jeb bush didn't do much to further his front-runner status. he played it safe. we'll talk about that. i'll tell you what, the one exchange between two candidates that's going to get the most air play this morning is about chris christie and rand paul, they are going at it a over the nsa. who won this? >> i want to collect more records from terrorists but less

records from innocent americans. tonight. >> that did not help rand paul. >> for people who like rand paul and support him they are happy. that's the one that actually won the day in the senate and the house. and governor christie the same thing. the younger generation loves what senator rand paul said. >> they probably said we could have done without the smirk and eye rolling. one of the best moments and everyone on twitter was responding to this was when ben carson in his closing statement like the final stitch into surgery said this. >> i'm the only one that separated siamese twins. the only one to operate on babies while they were still in mother's womb. only one to take out half of a brain although you would think if you went to washington somebody had beat me to it.

first let me say i think god has blessed us. he's blessed the republican party with very good candidates. the democrats can't even find one. >> does he have a point? here to react former ohio congressman and presidential

candidates fox news contributor congressman dennis kucinich. does he have a point? >> when you start claiming god is on your side you're always in trouble. i don't agree with that. i think democrats have a number of strong candidates and that it's important -- i thought senator rubio did well last night. on that point it's really silly. >> is it really silly, congressman, because you have hillary clinton in the middle of two scandals or controversies say that and then you have governor o'malley, senator webb, they can't get single digits. >> first of all with respect to secretary clinton, i've disagreed with her on libya. i led the effort in congress challenging what the administration did in libya. you cannot take it away from her. she's a person of great depth and experience. she's had a lot of missteps it's true. she still maintains a very wide

margin. bernie sanders has been rallying thousands of people around the country to meetings and rallies. the democrats have some solid candidates. you add governor o'malley and senator webb and chaffee they are good people. >> they are good people. in term of issues, we had abortion, health care, u.s. military power. what stood out to you. >> some cane steam have a certain naifte on war. this didn't seem to be enough sensitivity to that. rand paul express ad little bit of it. that was a concern. the other concern i had and this is true of democrats as well, on the race issue. there's really not an in depth understanding of what's

kardashians. some fundraising on the west coast. when democrats go out the hollywood, obviously they rub elbows like the kardashians. she was on twitter during the debate saying i'm so excited i'll get meet our next president and i hope she will take a selfie. we asked the clinton camp meeting with clinton. folks tweeted with me maybe she's meeting with carly fiorina. i think carly fiorina did steal the 5:00 p.m. show and people felt like that on social media. i was at the brooklyn campaign headquarters last night meeting with the campaign manager and the communications director and they had some interesting insights what they saw. >> what candidate stood out for them. >> is sleeper pick when we asked who exceeded expectations and i teased that about before. they said chris christie. they said that they thought chris christie brought it, it was confident, he was cool. they thought the exchange with rand paul at least the clinton camp -- this is the democratic side, they are looking at the

republican primary. they thought christie brought his a-game. whether he can continue that in future debates we'll see. they had some interesting insight on jeb bush. at one point, look some days i'm concerned jeb will be the republican nominee because he seems to be on. other days and other moments in the debate i'm concerned he will not be the nominee meaning the clinton camp really wants to face jeb because they think they can beat him. one last point on trump. there was a break in the action, we were talking to the campaign manager. commercial was ending. as soon as the cameras come back, the cameras went to trump. get out of here reporters because the clinton camp is i think just as mesmerized maybe in a different way than republicans but are mesmerized by trump too. absolutely. at one point during the debate last night the question, trump

was asked about the money he had given to clintons. i get things in return. what did you get from them? she came to my wedding. >> they were confused by that one. they were saying look just because he gave campaign money didn't mean that's why the clintons went to his wedding. they said it's because they are acquaintances. they didn't say friends. the clinton camp now realizes trump is more serious candidate than they thought and bill clinton phone call where he appeared to be encouraging trump to get in. >> carly fiorina brought that up. said bill clinton didn't call me. about the fbi investigation, is it criminal yet >> interesting little nugget. yesterday the "new york post" had anonymous sources say this is a criminal investigation the hillary emails and clinton camp says it's not criminal just a security investigation of the server. we decided to call the fbi and just say it is criminal or not? peter barnes from fox talked to

bit, what hurt kasich was not direct economic question but when he was asked about medicaid and he gave the st. peter answer and you start wonder if he applied that to all-big government issues we could actually have worse than $18 trillion deficit. all the governors i think did a pretty good job within their own respective states but walker articulated how he would make that a national policy and to me financially, capitfiscally it m the most sense. >> lisa? >> regarding the economy charles payne is right, scott walker was able to lay out, you know, talk about his experience as governor and what he did in the state of wisconsin. i think john kasich and jeb bush were also articulate on this issue. it helps when you held executive office and point to pro growth solutions that you enacted as governor. i think as far as the worst i would probably say, you know,

donald trump here and i just think that he a real opportunity to high like his business record. to talk about those accomplishments and he failed to articulate that last night. >> ben best and worst on economy? >> i would agree. scott walker probably had the best comments because of his track record in wisconsin. so everything from the jobless rate to the debt i think scott has a track record he can run on. look i also agree. donald trump had the question a few times on kind of his own fiscal ability what was bankrupt and he just didn't have a really good answer for that and he came across as just being overly arrogant. >> i'm sorry i didn't get my words in. listen i love governor huckabee but when he started talking about pimpss and prostitutes saving social security. so while i agree trump should have bean lay up for him it was not, bragging about taking advantage of bankruptcy laws i don't know necessarily makes you

is what we're looking for in balancing a budget for the federal government. >> speaking of mr. huckabee. let's shift gears and pivot to ben's department and that's military. here's mike huckabee on that. >> the military is not a social experiment. the purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. it's not to transform the culture by trying out some ideas that people think would make us a different country and more diverse. the purpose is to protect america. i'm not sure how paying for transgender surgery for soldiers, sailor, airmen, marines makes our country safer. >> so there you've got mike huckabee on that. that was late in the debate. ben your best and worst last night regarding the military. >> so my best was from the 5:00 debate, i would say it was carly fiorina. she had an incredible grasp of the strategic look when america is not strong the world is a much more chaotic place. she touched on a lot much issues

from home grown terror to isis threat at home and abroad, getting our arab allies back in the fold. so i was very impressed with carly fiorina's grasp of the issues. >> lisa best and worst on the military? >> carly fiorina. i think ted cruz -- carly fiorina she was scathing in going after president obama's failed foreign policy and i think she really hit the nail on the head on the iran deal. weak is senator rand paul. that was his weakness heading into the debate. again he failed to address that last night. his isolationist policies don't match up with the rest of the party. >> charlie's best and worst on the military? >> best i would go with carly fiorina also. let's not forego about the cyber warfare start. what ben carson said what we do is our business. political war does not win. i thought it was the potential. worst was rand paul. americans want to be safe. i don't know that terrorists

deserve the same constitutional rights as americans. >> you're not alone in that feeling. final topic we'll talk about leadership and messaging. charles just mentioned ben carson. here's the doctor right now. >> i was asked by an npr reporter once why don't i talk about race that often. i said it's because i'm a neurosurgeon. she thought that was a strange response. you see when i take somebody to the operating room i'm operating on the thing that makes them who they are. the skin doesn't make them who they are. the hair doesn't make them who they are. and it's time for us to move beyond that. >> great sound bite. lisa, regarding the actual -- you have a paddle right there. regarding messaging and leadership who was your favorite? >> i think it was actually senator marco rubio. the reason being he came into the debate at a deficit on this issue. that's one of the knocks against him he done have much experience as someone as jeb bush or john kasich being governor. he was able to articulate it's

not just the resume, 60% of americans believe the country is on the wrong track. he was able to point to the future and talk about the 21st century and what policies we need enact to make this country better. he was able to do that. >> ben, we'll just do winners. >> carly fiorina again. she was poised, articulate. she had a commanding presence on the stage. he was able to answer the questions. she looked extremely presidential to be quite frank. >> charles payne. >> carly in the 5:00 debate. ted cruz stayed on his message. it resonated towards the end. ben carson won the whole thing he was absolutely phenomenal. thanks for joining us. >> 20 minutes before the top of the hour. heather joins us right now with a fox news exclusive.

well the republican candidates did not pull punches at debate last night in cleveland. >> i don't are trust president obama with our records. i know you gave him a big hug. if you want to give him a big hug again, go ahead. >> he's not lying, he's just wrong. >> if you don't like it, i'm sorry. >> who had the strongest moments? who were the biggest losers? joining us laura ingram. of course, big audience because all eyes were on the center podium with donald trump. how did he do? >> i think it was pretty much the status quo after last night. i think people are looking at trump thinking, was he going to

come up with policy proposals, put meat on the bones of statements about we don't win anymore, the country is overrun with illegal immigrants. i don't think he had enough time to get into the nitty-gritty. there were a few moments i was like he could have done a little more. i'd be surprised if he lost any ground last night. i think that exchange between christie and rand paul was interesting. christie showed himself to be -- we remember why he was elected twice in a democrat state, contrary to what all new york media markets to do. they want to drag him through the mud. he stepped in a few times over the last couple of years. i thought that was a powerful exchange. rand paul did about as best he could do. chris christie did well. what i didn't see from anyone was one individual, other than trump, laying a glove on jeb

governor mike huckabee. thanks for joining us from cleveland. how long did you think about that question? >> it was one of those moments you realized you had to get attention. it's the last thing. when you're up there with ten other people, it's so difficult to break through, to be able to say something that causes people to say, gee, that makes sense. there's so much heaviness about the debate. it's a serious process. i always believe sometimes we need to bring levity to it and remind ourselves that the country is important. the issues are important. those of us who run, we need not take ourselves so seriously. none of us are the issue. it's about the country and about its future. >> sure. i thought governor one of the best things about the debate was the subject of being mindful,

prayerful and god, social issues made their way to that stage. i want to play the sound gay marriage. i want your reaction. >> if you had a son or daughter that was gay, how would you explain? >> i happen to believe in traditional marriage. i also said the court ruled. the court ruled. i said we'll accept it. guess what, i just went to a wedding of a friend of mine who happens to be gay. because somebody doesn't think the way a do doesn't mean i can't care about them or love them. so, if one of my daughters happened to be that, of course i would love them and accept them. >> a really loving response there. what did you think? >> i thought it was a good, honest answer. i think sometimes questions can be posed in such is a way to sort of put us on the spot. that's fair. we're running for president. we need to be prepared to be on

the spot. if you're president, you'll have more significant things that come up. it's not what you're prepared for. it's what you're not prepared for that's going to earn you a pay check. here's what people need to remember. there's a lot of focus on this. the position many of us have is the same position barack obama, hillary clinton and joe biden had in 2008. that's the traditional view of marriage. all of us believe that. president obama said 2008 as a christi christian, it's a biblical issue. one of three things happened. he was lying then, lying now, or the bible got rewritten between 2008 and when he changed his mind in 2012. he's the only one that's got the new version. rather than attack people that hold the biblical view and historic view of 6,000 years of

an independent potentially. people like donald trump. the 20% like him, a lot like him and going to stay with him. last night in i opinion, he provided a cap in the polls saying if i don't win, i'm going to run as a third party candidate helping elect hillary clinton. that rubs a lot of grass roots republicans the wrong way. you saw frank's group last night almost immediately afterwards. let's say something about donald trump. he had a good answer on immigration. he showed passion on the issue. he had a good answer on parenting. he rand paul went after him. he had a moment there. last night we had the third

party unnecessary attack on megyn. he had a good answer. he had a good exit answer. i'm not politically correct and shouldn't be so politically correct. threatening megyn was not smart. it caused people to do, she was right, he does not like women. >> let's talk about jeb bush for a second. the governor of florida was asked about iraq. if you knew what you know now, how would you react? >> not having security be the first priority when we invaded, it was a mistake. i wouldn't have gone in. here's the relation to this subject. president obama became president and abandoned iraq other. he left. al qaeda was done for. isis was created because of the void we left a. that void is caliphate the size of indiana.
