thursday night broke all records, even more people watched than anticipated. the numbers are in 24 million people tuned in. it's a new record in cable news. >> that's unbelievable. so up against sporting events. only the national championship game had more people watching. the highest rated most watched event in cable news history. >> compare this to some past election cycles back in 2012 about 7 million people are watching. back in 2008 about 7 million people. just for some context there. look at that. 2016 is just blowing 2012 out of the water. >> this is way more exciting to watch than sports. thursday's debate bigger than all of this year's nba finals, mlb world series games and most of the years nfl matchups as well. >> we had a debate party at my house. >> you did? that's great. i popped popcorn. >> people are saying who knew this could be this much fun. because there were so many fireworks. >> so why is this? there is a connection between

the concern people feel about a country and the extent to which they pay attention to its politics. my sense, of course donald trump helped. people wondered what he was going to say, obviously. but i also think gop primary voters are genuinely worried about the direction of the country. so one of the reason supporting trump in the first place in my view. but also, they care. they're invested in the future and see this election as a pivot point. >> interestingly too attention was held over the many hours of this debate because there were so many moments that kept voters engaged throughout the entire debate. twitter actually broke down some of the most commented moments throughout this debate. >> first up we had marco rubio remarking that if political resumes were the most important thing, then @hillaryclinton would win. jeb bush answering questions about his brother's war and illegal immigration. john kasich discussing incarceration policy and his position on same-sex marriage.

and donald trump mentioning rosie in an answer about the treatment of women. finally. >> yeah. finally the big back and forth, people were criticizing it's not really a debate. here you had a debate moment where rand paul and christie went after each other debating 9/11, giving oue ining >> basically rand paul says reading my e male does not make this a safer country. you ought to get a warrant. the government needs a warrant according to the constitution, bill of rights, before violating people's privacy. to which chris christie said, look, i've hugged the victims of 9/11 therefore you're wrong, i guess. >> well -- >> he was talking about the hug. he said you went out and hugged president obama. is that what you're going to do again and again? is that what you want to do? and christie said actually the hugs i remember were for the 9/11 victims. and you saw that body language from rand paul, the eye roll that a lot of people were upset about. >> the eye roll a lot of people comparing that. that popped up on social media

this week he looked like the church lady with that eye roll. but chris christie firing back on the point where he got fired up saying how do you know who's a terrorist. it's not like you have a list of terrorist e-mails and you leave the american people at home. >> what's so interesting to me of all the people on stage, ten people on the stage, senator paul spoke the least. he spoke for a little over four minutes, this compares to about over ten minutes for donald trump. and yet he did leave a lasting impression, at least in my mind, whether you agree with him or not, because he spoke from principle. he actually laid out pretty clearly what he believes and why he believes it. and i would say, again, i'm sure many of our viewers dislike his views and dismiss him, but this is a model, i think, for candidates. tell us what you really think and tell us why. he did so. >> he was there to make a lasting impression. he also spoke out when donald trump raised his hand and said i'm not going to rule out a third party run and he was the first one to stand up and fire out. >> why did you watch the debate?

send us your photos. you can also e-mail us. maybe you had a debate party as well. why did you watch the debate? what were you most interested in learning about these candidates? >> the debate, you speak as if it was one but in fact there was two. there was an earlier debate. carly fiorina, the former head of hewlett packard being discussed as a serious candidate even though she didn't make the cut of those ten in the primetime debate. >> i thought there was a real opportunity. in the 5:00 p.m. debate there was an opportunity for someone to shine and later in the 9:00 p.m. debate for them to perhaps have to answer to one of the standout candidates. and carly fiorina was the one who ended up, they even played a sound bite of her and governor perry later in the 9:00 p.m. debate. megyn kelly then did a focus group on carly fiorina and the impact she had in that 5:00 p.m. hour. listen. >> after watching her -- >> go ahead. >> i come up she's a combination

of gold in my ear, margaret thatcher and al capone. i'd vote for her in a minute. >> she has this great foreign policy presentation last night. she's the total package, business and foreign policy. >> she cuts with a precision of a surgeon. >> she instills confidence in you. when i listen to her talk, i was like, yes, i believe in you. she has a plan. she laid it all out, day one, day two. we know exactly what she wants to do and we believe in her. >> two prime ministers and an american gangster, that's who they are comparing her to. the other piece of it was fantastic, a smart point, one of the focus group members made was she didn't have to share the stage with donald trump either. she could talk about him while he wasn't there sucking up some of the air. >> so the question is, does carly fiorina have a future in this race? again, she didn't make the top ten according to the polls. that may change after this week. would she be an adequate or

helpful vice president for whoever gets nomination? that is the question you're seeing batted around. and the question carly fiorina is, is it sexist that you're only being mentioned as a potential vice president? she was asked that. here's her response. >> my guess is going forward it will get batted around less in that way. but i think to be president, and that's what i'm running to be, requires an understanding of how the economy actually works. i do. and understanding of how the world works and who's in it. i know more world leaders on the stage today than anyone running with the possible exception of hillary clinton, though i didn't do photo ops with people. >> a lot of times the vice presidential candidate is the attack dog that's unleashed. boy has she been hitting hillary hard. >> that's the thing about carly fiorina. she's super articulate. i'll be totally honest, i didn't take her as seriously as i do now. there were a lot of questions about her tenure at hewlett packard. i've never seen a politician improve as much as she has.

saying they are opposed to this iran deal. two are the top democrats on the house foreign affairs committee, the other senator chuck schumer is the longest serving jewish member currently in congress. he says, quote, to me the very real risk that iran will not moderate and will instead use the agreement to pursue nefarious goals is too great, therefore i will vote to disapprove the agreement. schumer says in ten to 15 years the deal would allow iran to be a nuclear threshold state with the blessing of the world community. but the chief u.s. negotiator secretary of state john kerry strongly disagrees. here's what he said about it yesterday. >> i profoundly disagree with the judgment made. i would respectfully suggest that rejection is not a policy for the future. it does not offer any alternative. >> do these latest defections show very deep divisions within the democratic party. yesterday the white house says the president is confident of

the administration's ability to build support among democrats for the deal. but they'll have to do it quickly. and they'll have to do it while congress is on recess. a vote is expected shortly after they get back from the summer break. back to you guys in new york. thanks, kristin. starting with a fox news alert, a u.s. special ops base attacked overnight in afghanistan. three american soldiers reportedly injured. two militants tried to storm the kabul base but were killed, this coming after dozens were killed in a wave of bombings across the city. also breaking overnight, islamic extremists take hostages at a hotel in mali leaving 12 people dead. mali and special forces ended the hostage situation a short time ago freeing four of those hostages, but not before the attackers killed three hotel workers, a u.n. contractor and five local soldiers. three jihadists were also killed. ukrainian and russian officials say their citizens were among the hostages.

well, some quick headlines for you this morning. first up, the navy about to start placing armed guards at reserve centers nationwide. this comes of course after a gunman murdered four sailors and marines in a chattanooga recruiting center last month. the navy says the move is necessary to protect its personnel. nothing like a little r and r to make a major decision. vice president joe biden to weigh his political future and

potential 2016 presidential run during a long family retreat later this month in south carolina. this comes as his aides say the vice president has shown interest in filing deadlines and in fund raising. thanks, tucker. death penalty denied. the colorado theater shooter james holmes will spend life in prison for killing 12 people and injuring 70 more. just hours -- only after hours of deliberations just one juror couldn't agree on the death penalty sparing the shooter. >> we split with one juror solidly in favor of life sentence and two that were undecided, more or less, which would go to life. and the rest were in favor of the death penalty. >> but if he can't get death, who can? here to debate defense attorneys. nice to see you both this morning. e eric, are you shocked by this verdict? >> i was shocked. we were talking off the air, this is one of those cases where

anyone was going to die, this guy was it. the carnage in this theater, people who were doing nothing but enjoying their family outing were killed by this madman. and to have him to serve life in prison without parole is shocking to me. i thought he was a dead ringer. >> were you shocked? >> yeah. i was shocked up until yesterday when the jurors asked to see a 45-minute crime scene evidence video. that told me that somebody was holding out and they wanted to put that carnage in that person's face to say wait a minute, why are you holding out, this case screams for the death penalty. >> it's a one juror, one juror decides this, this hold out juror decides she doesn't want the death penalty and that changes the entire course of this verdict. >> yes. because the verdict has to be unanimous. everyone has to agree on the death penalty. and that's the way our jury system is set up. even with a guilty verdict in a trial every juror has to agree. and that is reelly to make sure

that the jury system is fair to everyone. >> so what about the selection process? you think something else is going on here. >> this is horrible. this case demonstrates that the problem, which is unfixable, happens during jury selection. here's why. on a death penalty case the jury has to be what we call death qualify. they have to sit there and swear they could impose a death penalty if the situation warranted. i think when you have a case like this, a high profile case, and somebody just wants to get on the jury so they can tell the story or write the book, they may not be completely truthful -- >> so you think she lied? >> i think she lied. >> not necessarily. they listened to evidence, they found him guilty. >> aggravating factors exceed to mitigate -- then they put on the brake? >> that is that person's decision. even if we disagree with it, that is our system. oh, i agree, if anyone was supposed to get the death penalty, it was this guy. but that's the jury system. designed to protect everyone's rights. >> we need a better way to knead

out the jurors. say and do anything to get on a jury and i think that's what this woman did. >> just because we disagree with it does not say this lady tried to sneak on. >> i mean, all the evidence seemed to support the death penalty, right? premeditation, he planned this for a while, what would have changed her mind? was there some piece of evidence that kept her from thinking death penalty? >> i would imagine it wasn't evidence. it was the genius closing argument of the defense attorney who had a tough job to do, but she tried to humanize the client. if the hold out was a parent, what the defense attorney did was say this isn't a shooter, this is somebody's son. this is mr. and mrs. holmes son and that might have resonated with this jury who probably wasn't death qualified from the beginning. >> he had a mental illness. that's what i think is the big thing. he has a mental illness and people are concerned with putting mentally ill people to death for something they do. >> but they can. >> although it's horrible and he

into the zone. >> i'm not saying it's a bad thing at all, but it's definitely a real thing. and you can tell from this picture. >> that's a pretty remarkable picture. >> all right. onto other stories making headlines on your saturday morning. a police chief rips into confusing immigration laws after a brutal killing of a woman by an illegal immigrant. 64-year-old air force veteran marilyn ferris sexually assaulted and beaten with a hammer by two men who broke into her california home last month. one suspect, victor ramirez, is an illegal immigrant from mexico with a long rap sheet. santa maria police chief ralph martin lays the blame on washington. >> we believe there's a blood trail from washington, d.c. to sacramento into the bedroom of marilyn. we see time after time that this administration throws buckets of nails in front of i.c.e. >> ramirez and jose villagomez, a u.s. citizen, are both charged with her murder. awful. and terrifying moments for passengers on two different

airplanes. first the passenger on board an american airline flight recording the moment flames spit out of the engine. it happened moments after taking off from philadelphia heading to seattle overnight. the plane carrying 133 passengers did land safely back in philly. the flames caused by burning fuel. and take a look at this photo out of nashville, tennessee. a similar burnoff is blamed for sparking a fireball outside a sky west plane operated by delta. the flight was about to take off for cincinnati with 50 passengers onboard. fortunately no one was hurt. and a disturbing trend of 911 dispatchers refusing to help. this time no help for an indiana man who fainted at a gym. >> okay. we have a short on medics, so it's going to be a minute. >> you said who? >> we don't have any medics and it's going to be a minute. >> all right, well, let me try to take the man to the hospital

thoughts and responses and twitter collated some of the more popular responses that stood out to people including marco rubio's comments that political resumes were the most important thing hillary clinton would win. a lot of people thought marco rubio looked polished and gave a strong debate performance. we'll be talking to him in a few moments. >> scott walker discussing national electability in light of his pro-life views. jeb bush answering questions about his brother's war and illegal immigration. >> john kasich talks about incarceration policy and same-sex marriage. and then donald trump responding to a question about his attacks on women by saying, you know what, it was just rosie o'donnell i was going after, and that's legitimate. >> and she fired back on twitter at him. and rand paul and chris christie got into a bit of a debate back and forth about 9/11, nsa surveillance. >> when donald trump was asked about his campaign contributions to various democrats he said, look, they're all for sale. i gave money to hillary clinton, and she came to my wedding.

why would you want hillary at your wedding? the directness of that -- >> you can just buy politicians like that and if somebody wants to be a part of it. >> that's what rand paul is capitalizing on. that donald trump is admitting to try to buy political favor. >> i've never seen a politician do something like that. yeah, they're for sale and i bought them, hillary clinton specifically. for this price she'll come to your wedding, too. >> it is remarkable. why did you watch the debate? send in your e-mails. you can go on our twitter stream. tell us your thoughts what you want to learn from your candidate. >> that wasn't the only debate. that was the top ten candidates according to a cross section of polls. there was a debate before them. really the person -- the breakout star by consensus carly

map as you're waking up this morning. we had a lot going on including heat across much of the south. dallas, this is what you look like the next five days, just be prepared these next four days you're going to be flirting with records for the day. it's going to be very hot and you're around 5 to 7 degrees above average. when your average is that high, that much extra temperature does not feel good. across the northeast today, here is how it will play out. a few scattered showers across west virginia in to the appalachians. for the most part we have a pretty great day there. across the southeast, a few more showers around parts of florida. a couple heavy ones around the tampa area, unfortunately. looking better than it's been. obviously that heat is continuing. and one trouble spot, you see this rain we have this morning across nebraska and iowa. late they are afternoon that redevelops right along the missouri river there. we could be looking at the threat for a tornado or two, possibly some pretty significant ones, and out across areas of the west, we'll see that monsoonal activity continue. temperature wise not looking all that bad. all right. well, they are a staple of the

>> you have so many people, more people watching the fox news debate with facebook this week than "monday night football." they want to find someone out of the field of choices that can win and win in the general election. in order to do that we're talking about the electoral college. we need 270 to win. that's really the magic number here. facing any republican choice is this blue wall, what's referred to as the states that have the last six times gone for the democrats. so in order to punch through that wall, it's important to understand that not all states are in play, just a few battleground states can make or break it. we start with governor scott walker being in one of those blue states if walker were to carry wisconsin. >> the last six psycycles that' gone to democrats. >> since 1992 that has traditionally gone to democratic candidate for president, so that's the challenge here. so this week's debate started in cleveland. looking at the cleveland issue, you have potentially 18 different electoral votes, very important. a home-court advantage as many

have seen with governor kasich there. past polls, we don't know what the future momentum will be like after this weekend. but past polls indicate that we have strong performance from governor kasich plus ten, plus six, sometimes as high as plus 11 in the last month or so. look for ohio. of course we know the debates end up in the convention for the rnc ends up back in cleveland. >> this is a general election but they need to get through the primaries first. these are the three key states. >> that's correct. >> virginia 13. a win for obama. >> right, right. >> what do you think of virginia for this general election? >> so two other states the size of ohio, florida is one and that's a state not being talked about as much but will be absolutely pivotal. that's why you have the bush and/or rubio. in past polls at least in the past month we've seen the real clear politics average with bush with the lead followed by trump

rand had been sick all day. he felt awful. he had stomach cramps. he was literally just not sure he was even going to make it to the stage. so it wasn't that he was just being grumpy. what was going on is he was hoping that he didn't have one of those george bush japanese moments at the dinner and all of us in the elevator. >> well, that would have been a memorable moment. >> that's a petri dish in the elevator. >> yes, it would. >> debate, 24 million people tuned in to watch this debate just slightly less than the national championship game. this was the most-watched news event in cable news history, governor. why do you think so many americans dialed in to see what you guys had to say? >> well, i'd love to be able to tell you i think they were watching because they wanted to see what i was going to say. but i think the fact is america's in trouble. people know that. people across this country are being just punched in the gut by the economy.

we hear the unemployment numbers, they don't tell the real story. people are working two and three jobs and they can barely feed their families. they can barely make the rent payments. and as a result of that people are saying does anybody understand who we are? does anybody care who we are? does anybody have an answer to how to get this country back on track? and i think that the interest in the presidential campaign is largely about people who are desperate to see america get back on track again and be able to be the country that lifts people up and gives them a real chance for hope and higher ground. >> well, governor huckabee, wasn't just 24 million people that were watching fox news channel, watching you and nine others take the stage at 9:00 p.m., also social media was lighting up. here's the moment most tweeted about regarding you taking the stage. let's watch this clip. >> defense secretary ashton carter recently directed the military to prepare for a moment when it is welcoming transgender persons to serve openly. as commander in chief how would

you handle that? >> the military is not a social experiment. the purpose of the military is kill people and break things. it's not to transform the culture by trying out some ideas that some people think would make us a different country and more diverse. the purpose is to protect america. i'm not sure how paying for transgender surgery for soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, makes our country safer. >> governor, was this your best moment? is this the one you're happy took fire and really caught wind? >> well, i really would love to spend more time talking about things like why i support the consumption tax called a fair tax. even my position on the issue in iran and the horrible iranian deal. but, you know, you answer the questions you're dealt. and we don't get to pick those. but i do feel very passionate that we have turned our military into something more of a social experiment. we have soldier who is are going to repeated deployments, we have

the smallest prepared military since before world war ii. i mentioned the other night the last time we put a b-52 in service was 1962. there are people flying those airplanes whose grandfathers flew those airplanes. we have veterans who come back from deployment and they wait months to get help. we need to be focusing on people who lost their leg, not people who want to change their gender. and that's why i feel very strong that there's a whole lot of issues about our military that need to be addressed far more urgently than transgender issues. >> so, governor, i wanted to get your take on that iran deal. the president defending it pretty vigorously, gave a speech on it yesterday. most democrats have coalesced around him. chuck schumer has broken ranks and says he will oppose the iran deal. why do you think he has broken from his party? do you think it will be enough to scuttle the deal? >> well, there's no one who is a more effective leader among the democrats in the senate than

chuck schumer. harry reid may have the title -- >> unfortunately we're having difficulty with governor huckabee's satellite. we'll see if we can get him back in a moment. >> it is a pretty amazing moment though. chuck schumer not just a democrat, but mr. democrat, is m coing out against this signature policy of the president. it's not a small thing. >> i know that the governor we're going to try to get the governor back here. he wants to talk more about the iran deal. we'll see if we can make that happen. >> we'll get to this in the meantime starting with fox news alert. we've learned an american has been killed in an overnight attack on a u.s. special ops base in after dpan stghanistaaf. two other americans are injured. eight afghan soldiers and one nato service member also died. the attack coming after a deadly wave of bombings across the city. and devastating and deadly typhoon slams taiwan killing at least six and leaving dozens more hurt. it made landfall overnight knocking out power to more than 3 million homes.

with pounding rains and 150-mile-an-hour winds at least four people are missing, one an 8-year-old girl swept out to sea. some streets in taipei left under four feet of water and strewn with falling debris. the typhoon now barrelling toward china where more than 158,000 people have already evacuated. he shot 12 people dead, but the colorado movie theater shooter's life will be spared. in a surprising move the jury rejected the death penalty for james holmes and instead gave him a life sentence without parole. a lone juror would not budge after six hours of deliberation. outraged family members cried and hugged one another after the verdict was read. >> and the gaping void, the gaping wound that we have with the loss of our granddaughter has been replaced with a new abscess of him living.

before the stars misaligned for a moment. >> well, what i was saying is that chuck schumer is really the intellectual leader of the democrats in the senate, not so much harry reid though he holds the title. this is very significant. and even though i would say i probably disagree with chuck schumer on most things, i want to commend him on this because he did this in the face of extraordinary pressure and opposition. and i believe he did it because chuck schumer has consistently been a true friend to israel. and he's been a true friend to peace in the middle east. he knows this is a bad deal. this is an example of statesmanship, partisanship. i think we all owe chuck schumer a really sincere round of applause for standing up and putting america first, putting peace first and saying no to the iranian deal. >> so is this going to be enough? are you going to see other democrats, there have been a couple others, but will you see more in the senate break with the president on this question? >> i think you will. because chuck schumer has the

gravita is to bring others with him. there were others who expressed misgivings or maybe against it, but none who have the position that chuck schumer does or the respect that he holds among the people in the senate who look to him as a person to follow. so i think this is huge and very significant. and look for an enormous amount of pressure against him. and if the white house goes and tries to discredit him, it shows how truly desperate they have become. and they have become that. >> governor, a lot of the gop presidential contenders have gone south, left the buckeye state. you're in atlanta quickly before you go. what are you doing there? >> well, today is the day for the red state gathering. i think almost all the candidates are going to be here today. each making a pitch answering some questions. so it will be quite a big con fab. we're making one more pitch to get the message out to voters and explain to them how we can get america where it needs to be. >> governor huckabee joining us live from atlanta. we appreciate you joining us. >> good luck, governor.

freedom's ramparts who return back to this nation where they've been willing to make that commitment and we only relegated to a few minutes of a sound bite in this major debate. that is a sad indictment on our culture and what we believe is our priority issue. and i speak very clearly. my father was a disabled american veteran from world war ii. he worked in the veterans administration hospital in atlanta, georgia. and sadly it was in that v.a. hospital where he lost his life. but this is a very important issue for me. >> so what specifically would you like to see the republican candidates and the democratic candidates take up on veterans issues? >> well, i think most importantly when we talk about this choice act, which president obama signed into law and now they want to try to defund the choice act. you know, it's very interesting to me that they don't want to defund planned parenthood but they want to defund the choice act enabling our veterans to be able to go to any medical center, to any clinic that is available to them. that once again shows you something is awry with this

administration and with this issue. and marco rubio did bring up a very important fact, only one person has been fired from the veterans administration after this very heinous occurrence that we learned about about veterans dying on waiting lists. >> nobody ever gets fired from federal service, as you know. so there just aren't that many veterans running because a pretty small percentage of americans now serve and the greatest generation no long ner politics really. on the democratic side, jim webb, a legitimate war hero from the vietnam war is running. we're interviewing him tomorrow on the show. what do you make of webb's candidacy? >> well, i think jim webb is probably running in the wrong party. if he was running in the republican party he'd have more of a platform, more of a voice. he is a former marine infantry officer, former secretary of the navy, senator from virginia. and so i think when you look at that type of resume, he does not fit with the liberal progressive mantra of today's democrat party. but we need to have more men and women who want to be commander

facedown in a bathtub back in january. whitney houston's daughter died two weeks ago. and now an updated lawsuit accuses nick gordon of wrongful death. he left brown unconscious after the couple had a fight during a drinking binge. gordon's lawyer called the lawsuit slanderous. the navy is about to start placing armed guards at reserve centers nationwide. this of course comes after a gunman killed four marines and a sailor in chattanooga last month. the navy says the move is necessary to protect personnel. this does not apply to recruiting centers like the one in chattanooga. they are still unguarded for now. and the navy says additional measures are being considered. a service dog saved her blind owner's life by calling police during a fire. yolanda the dog used a specialized phone to alert firefighters to the flames. she then led her owner out of the home. yolanda the dog has used that same phone to report a medical emergency and a break-in in the past. that is some dog.

christie. charles, what do you think that? >> they do run governments and budgets. i think that's really important. they've come from the midwest, particularly kasich in a rust belt state, it's a swing state but also one of the states that's the epitome of the challenges of america. the reason he didn't come in first for me was his medicaid answer. while it has a general sympathetic tone you normally don't get maybe compassionate, conservatism, i worry when you start to say, hey, it's okay to have overrun bloated policy because we want to help people. you might apply that to other parts of the economy. walker of course we know he's done an amazing job against stiff opposition in his state. so neck and neck. >> all right. why rubio and christie on the economy? >> i liked what rubio said. he had a question from someone on youtube who asked about how can you save small business. his answer was to repeal dodd frank, i completely agree. dodd frank has been terrible for small banking and for small business. so kudos to rubio on that.

for christie i liked what he was talking about entitlement reforming, social security. he went on it with huckabee a little bit, but he defeated huckabee in my opinion. >> all right. then 5:00 p.m. hour you picked carly fiorina. she was lighting up social media after her performance in the 5:00 p.m. hour. >> she was. someone who was a ceo of one of the largest companies in the world, she could have been removed from sort of the small business family business, but she highlighted that. if you look at her bio, you understand why. she started out as a secretary in a little real estate firm. so she's been from the ultimate small local business all the way to the highest strata of business. so she gets it. >> what about the losers on the economy, guys? grab your paddles. who do you think dropped the ball on the economy? >> i'm going to borrow her paddle. >> i'm going to agree. >> why mike huckabee? >> i give mike huckabee credit for wanting to talk about social security just as chris christie came out with this plan i think is nuts but didn't talk about it during the debate, it's the third role of american politics. the idea somehow a consumption

tax is a good reason not to have social security reform is crazy. we must tackle this. because if we do want anything out there for future generations, we have to clean it up now. >> let's talk about mike huckabee more answering one question about the united states military and our readiness. take a listen to him. >> the military is not a social experiment. the purpose of the military is kill people and break things. it's not to transform the culture by trying out some ideas that some people think would make us a different country and more diverse. the purpose is to protect america. i'm not sure how paying for transgender surgery for soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, makes our country safer. >> all right. grab your paddles. who do you think won on the military? that was governor huckabee there. you have to borrow some paddles. it's like a game of go-fish over there. >> i loved what huckabee said, but carson i liked what he had to say. >> start with the military.

>> governor huckabee hit exactly on what he should have hit on. the military is there for nothing other than that to take hills, protect our interests, be a good ally and protect our allies when necessary and all used for stuff that the is a distraction. we're reducing the size of our military at the same time we're giving them all these other things, social agenda items, to incorporate. and they're losing focus of the mission protect the country. >> and scott walker here. >> i think walker had perhaps one of the best lines of the night when he was talking about the fact that the russians probably know more about hillary clinton's e-mail than we do. and so that speaks to sort of broader issues i think of national security, surveillance and military readiness. so i thought it was a very strong point for him. >> overall ben carson. >> what we do is our business. he's absolutely right. these politically correct wars are nuts. i'm reading a book right now about war 101, more soldiers were lost in an hour than we lose in modern day fighting

24 million. that's how many tuned into the first republican debate that aired on fox news thursday night. it was the single most watched cable news program in the history of cable news. it was clearly fascinating to people. why is is question. joining us now, a psychologist. >> thanks. >> we've had a lot of debate. >> for having me. >> fox hosts a lot of them. always do a good job. this one outrated the next highest rating, which was in 2012, by a factor of many. that was 7.6 million. this was 24 million. what's the difference? >> first of all, this is more sthan a political story, more than a news issue, tights entire media. this 24 million number transforms marquee entertainment shows. david letterman's farewell show

had 13 million. big sports shows, it outdid the winter olympics. it's a major story. i think there's multiple factors. i think the first is one you alluded to in an earlier segment. we're a celebrity-driven society and there's really never been a celebrity like donald trump participating in this process. this is someone that was on the air various iterations of t s " apprentice" for 14 seasons. the current "celebrity apprentice" had 24 million or more. the name recognition of donald trump, the ability to draw people, is incredible. actually, the nine other participants gained tremendously from this huge audience and in part, in great part, they have donald trump to thank for that. i think there's another key factor, though.

i think there's incredible anxiety and angst in the population. there's a need for new leadership. donald trump's celebrity image is associated with leadership. and people are insecure. they're insecure about the economy, the borders, the nation, and they're seeking ideas that will bring forth this notion of new security and -- >> i believe that completely. right. they're worried enough to be more open minded than they've ever been. donald trump is famous, but so is oprah and i doubt she would get 24 million if she were in the debate. with trump, there's this feeling you don't know what he's going to say. something thrilling about that, whether you agree or not. >> no, no, i agree with the thrill factor and also think he drew fans, foes, curiosity seekers, a whole confluence of audience.
