[ gunshots ] >> gunshots ringing out and people running for their lives as a protest on the one-year anniversary of michael brown's death. shots were fired at plain clothes officers who were monitoring several armed individuals in that krawd. they exchanged gunfire shooting critical condition. >> they were criminals. they weren't protesters. protesters are out there talking about a way to effect change. that's a small group of people out there that are intent on making sure we don't have peace that prevails xing these protests were designed to remember michael brown who died last year after being shot by former ferguson police officer darren wilson. wilson was never charged in the death. right now, police are seeking

million people watching. >> six million at 5:00. we had a feeling on friday it was big. we had no idea. 24 million overall. the highest rated nonsports telecast of all time. highest rated presidential debate ever. it was the highest rated cable news program of all time. clearly, a lot of people wanted to watch all ten of those candidates out there and there's a lot of interest as well in donald trump. >> that's right. and now we know how many people watched, but now we know what they think. when asked according to a new nbc online poll, conducted by var monkey. who would you vote for today? among republican voters, 23% still in favor of donald trump. ted cruz bumped up to 13% right there and followed by dr. ben carson, carly fiorina, and senator mark rubio, they are tied at 8% in those survey

results. >> what's interesting in trends in terms of what happened. trump went up by 1. if you believe this poll, just a snap poll. with we'll a much more detailed one. ted cruz went up 7 points. chris christie actually lost two points and you have john casic down one. and i'm one of the people who thought kasich was one of the real stars of that debate. >> and keep in mind, nbc is pushing this as a scientific poll. it was done on line. >> with beakers and lab coats? >> they asked who do you think won the debate on thursday night, among republican voters? carly fiorina, look at that, right there, 22%. donald trump, 18%. marco rubio, ted cruz and dr. ben carson. what's interesting about these numbers that nbc is pushing is only a fraction, only 18% of the people who took part actually saw the 5:00 show and that's

problems and as the governor of missouri, so-called leaders in ferguson, there have been some changes, what have they really done, about education, crime, proper community policing? >> apparently what happened it looks like one 18-year-old man by the the name of tyrone harris he apparently opened fire on four st. louis county plain clothes detectives who were in an suv, they fired back. he was struck. he's in hospital in stable condition. >> you've got anonymous posting showing him on the ground saying no medical help. they are pushing this narrative. the an arcists, the other group that get involved in this, they are the ones are largely being led by char la tans, difference

from those groups and the people who want to do something. the business owners who still haven't recovered their businesses -- >> apparently he is in critical, not stable condition. >> don't shoot at the cops. that's a simple lesson. you shoot at police officers wearing a vest that says police, they are going to shoot back. >> absolutely. here's another story that's outraged people. down in roebuck, alabama. a detective was beaten and pistol whipped until unconscious by an ex-felon. what's terrible about this story, is people have posted photos on facebook and social media and they are mocking him. the suspect, cunningham, disobeyed and hit the officer with his own gun while he was being apprehended. these things started popping up in social media. >> here's a difference on how things are reported. you have a white police officer

beaten by a 34-year-old, maybe not lifelong, but a criminal with a significant history who happens to be a black man. where's the reporting on the crime versus the color of skin? the media will report more -- they will report more on ferguson and the black lives matter movement than they will on a criminal who happens to be black beating a police officer because he is white. >> the president of the fraternal order of police saying he was there lifeless while people were standing there taking pictures, if the tables were turned and there was a suspect laying there, there would be rioting. >> the officer who was shot recently, and a resident got involved, the cop has been shot. that by the way in a primarily black neighborhood. this is not black versus white or white versus black. this is good versus bad, and we have to turn around as communities and start doing something about this.

spotted by pilots from four separate airplanes. it happened around noon yesterday just as these planes were making their final approach to the airport, flying at altds between 2,000 and 3,000 feet. just last week, there were three other reports of drones spotted near jfk airport. experts say these drones if they came in contact with aircraft could be incredibly dangerous. >> we've been very lucky to this point, there's been no incidents, if this keeps happening over and over and over again, we're pressing our luck. eventually one of these things will land inside the engine of an airplane. >> the faa is currently investigating all of these incidents. officials say flying a drone near an airport is illegal. violators could face fines up to $25,000 or even criminal charges. that's the latest live here from

and don meredith. >> of course, he married kathie lee gifford. >> frank gifford was a football legend and an award winning broadcaster. born in santa monica, california on august 16th, 1930, he went to the university of southern california on a football scholarship where he was named an all-american. he was drafted by the national football league new york giants that same year and named most valuable player in 1956. throughout his career, teammates often resentd him for his celebrity status. >> i never could figure out some of the animosity that i got from players. once i got over the hurt really of that, i just said to hell with it, i went on and played my game. >> in 1960, a severe concussion

caused gifford to set out the next season. in 1962, he returned to the game before retiring for good two years later. gifford was inducted into the pro football hall of fame in 1977. he was a broadcaster for multiple networks both during and after his playing days, including abc and cbs. in 1971 he was named the play by play man for monday night football, anchoring alongside howard cosell and don meredith. he spent 27 years. gifford married his third wife in 1986, they had two children, adding two sons and a daughter to his first marriage. he met her while they we together at abc's good morning america. he was caught in 1977 with a

affair with susan johnson, at first denying it. he continued making public appearances. ultimatelily he will be remembered for what he did on the football field and on the announcers booth. brian kilmeade, fox news. >> frank gifford was just seven days shy of his 85th birthday and i was lucky enough back when i was in college, i was a production assistant some weekends on monday night football and i was there with frank and dandy don and howard cosell. it was the biggest show in the world and they were all unbelievable characters. >> kathie lee gifford is a friend of mine. she tweeted she was deeply gratef grateful to all for your outpouring of grace.

a frantic rescue at sea after a sailboat catches fire off the coast of new jersey. black smoke billowing high above an ocean. yet a man, woman and their dog fleeing the ship on a life raft. coast guard arriving within 10 minutes and brought them to shore in ocean city, new jersey. they were not hurt. 46-foot sailboat eventually sank. the cause of the fire is under investigation. that's a bad weekend. kentucky school district says this school officer handcuffing this special needs kid does not violate policy. the p sued the school district and the officer for handcuffing the kids but after an independent investigation, they say he was in line with the restraint policy designed to keep students safe.
