donald trump and hillary clinton. believe it or not, trump is already causing quite a stir at the fair. he is not even there yet because of his possible grand entrance. most candidates arrive on a campaign bus. trump is reportedly arriving in his 7-million-dollar chopper and it's rumored he is going to be giving free rides to kids and iowa voter. as you might imagine, that's not sitting well with some of his rivals. yesterday at jeb bush's day at the fair he took a few swipes at trump on the soapbox. he was quick to pivot to opponents on foreign policy. neither the president nor hillary clinton have a strategy to defeat isis. >> strategy is to say it's somebody's else fault. it's time we had a president that accepted responsibility for the duties of the presidency. if there's a problem, don't say the dog ate my homework which is what we hear all the time. accept responsibility to fix it that's what leaders do. >> clinton hit back at last night's annual wing ding dinner by attacking bush's

comments about cutting funding for women with's health. >> governor bush says $500 million is too much to spend on women's health. and they all want to defund planned parenthood. going to be all about inversion. somebody said why don't you put it out in august? no business happens in august. >> meanwhile senator rick santorum who won iowa last time. it took a number of weeks to find out if he actually won iowa when all the votes were tallied, he will be on our show this morning at 8:00 to see if he can do a repeat. we will strategy in that state with all the focus on trump right now. >> there he is. the clear frontrunner right now, hillary clinton, we mentioned sanders, you know, picking up numbers as well, could there be more democrats putting their hats in the ring? vice president joe biden said to be vacationing with his family and he will make a decision some time next month whether he will be joining and trump says he is convinced that clinton is going to be wiped out by this email scandal and he is going to be up against biden. >> it is interesting to see what's going on as the fbi looks into these servers and trying to track where these emails were leaked from and

going from. donald trump seems to suggest that, yeah, maybe i'm not going to be facing hillary clinton if i go on to face anyone in the general election, it might be vice president joe biden. >> how come though more democrats don't want to be president. aren't they supposed to be the party looking out for young people and minorities? these people that keep coming up? no young people and no minorities. they are just recycling as democrats like to do people who have lost. >> biden he is 7 years old. he would be 78 upon completing his first term. he is saying he would only run for one term. is that a gimmick some are saying, too. >> it's interesting to see he if that's what's going to happen. also hearing possibly secretary of state john kerry could be pulled back and whether or not al gore would actually be involved in. this al gore not likely. his spokesperson said that he is laser focused on solving the climate crisis right now. there is no chance that al gore probably would be brought back into the 2016

race. that was from his spokesperson. >> and then what about john kerry? msnbc andrea mitchell interviewed him and she asked him about this. she tweeted this out. so if all -- or if al gore supporters talk about 'him running and biden undecided what about @ john kerry. he tells me not now but doesn't mean not forever. >> so what would all this mean for hillary clinton? everybody is talking about it down in d.c. >> i think that what we could be seeing over the next couple of weeks is people like former maryland governor martin o'malley who has not really caught on in any of the polls, he could begin to catch on. as well, i think vice president joe biden there are a lot of conversations happening about whether or not someone like him would be able to get into the race, really shake things up. that could pose a significant primary threat to hillary clinton. >> well, speaking of email scandals, we were talking about the server. the fbi trying to track how

think about this the next time you go to log on to research candidates for the 2016 election. a new study says that google search algorithm can actually help steal the presidency. here to explain is dr. robert epstein one of the study's authors and psychologist at the american institute for behavioral research and technology. doctor, nice to he so you this morning. welcome to the show. >> thank you, clayton. so in your studies over the past couple years, how did

you figure out that people were manipulated by certain negative news stories appearing in search results? you did this, what, in australia to test this out? >> no, no. we have done five big experiments four in the u.s. and one in india right in the middle of a big election there with more than 4,000 people. so, no, we have really studied this very, very carefully. it's a big problem. >> so to be specific, what you were doing was presenting potential members of this study with potential -- with with search results from a fake -- with with a fake search giant, right? and then you would drop in sort of negative news stories into the search queries and you found that that had had a profound effect on the way in which they voted, right? >> well, ronald robertson and i conducted a whole series of experiments showing when biased rankings are shown to people, that if one candidate is made to look better than another in the rankings, that shifts

the voting preferences of those voters who are undecided and it's a big shut. the biggest shift we found by the way in any group anywhere was among moderate republicans. they are actually the most vulnerable to this kind of manipulation. >> so this idea that the election could be swayed by just simply one negative story, it seems kind of preposterous. but, when you think about it, most people don't even go past the first page of google results at all, right? >> well, that's the problem. and the higher something is ranked, the more people trust it. 50% of all clicks go to the top two items. more than 90% of all clicks go to the first page. and what we have learned is that, you know, if you put something near the top, people believe it and they trust it more than if it's lower on the list. and so the problem here is if google executives or rogue employee or google

algorithm favors one candidate in search rankings that could easily flip an election. we have computed that upwards of 25% of the world's national elections can be flipped by google's algorithm with with no one knowing that this is being done. >> we saw what facebook did when they started to membership people's minute people's membership people's manipulate news feeds and time lines. >> google's approach to search from the very beginning it would undermine people's trust in our results and company if we were to change course. so google is saying look, we are not manipulating this, do you buy that? >> that's as vegas as can be. -- vague as can be. a meaningless statement. google's algorithm with or without any involvement why google employees, google's algorithm has been affecting the outcome of close elections around the world for years. >> fascinating.

and they are going to be talking politics. taking their turns, going on the soapbox. donald trump and senator rick santorum are going to be the big names today. what are you noticing on the ground so far? >> well, i have mostly been to events so far for other candidates. even those folks who have attended them aren't quite yet committed. they are still looking around. they have told me with with 17 g.o.p. candidates there is a lot to choose from and they still have a lot of time. but everyone i have talked to has said to me that donald trump would not be their first choice and most of them have also said he that he would not be their second choice. though they would support him if he were the g.o.p. nominee. >> jeb bush yesterday said he is not really impressed with donald trump. and when asked whether or not he would be worried whether or not the helicopter would fly in, he said this. and hillary clinton also not impressed. take a listen. >> it's a long haul. not just in iowa, across the board. this is -- we're just at the beginning of this.

at 5% in the polls here. >> donald trump is doing incredibly well in the polls you say there is another candidate that is getting a lot of buzz. who is that? >> yes. everywhere i have went here. everyone keeps telling me that they like to hear more from john kasich. the ohio governor. now, if you remember, kasich got into the race very late at the end of ziewl. he hasn't had as much time as some of these other candidates to introduce himself to voters. traveling across the country to iowa to new hampshire and south carolina for six, seven, eight months now. voters have told me they liked him in the debate. they thought he was great and they would like to hear more from him. he could present a problem for jeb bush because i will also say the folks who said they wanted to hear more from kasich tended to be bush fans. >> francesca you mentioned jeb bush was heckled earlier. there are democrats at this event. we don't know necessarily if it was the republicans or the democrats heckling. there was this big democratic wing ding where

hillary, o'malley were speaking. how far do democrats feel about that trio? is there as much excitement on that side? >> >> hillary got an amazing reception last night. she was on fire as she gave her speech. she came to iowa with flair and said she is going to fight for this nomination. she is not going to back down. sanders, unfortunately had to go right after her. she took the wind out of his sales. he was very popular as well. hillary, you know, had the opportunity to go first and the crowd was loving her last night in clear lake, iowa. after sanders was o'malley, as o'malley took the stage, the crowd began to leave after already heard clinton and sanders speak and things were worse for lincoln chafee. by the time lincoln chafee was speaking people were flooding out of event that tells you how at least the iowa voters are feeling about the democratic candace. >> francesca, we want our viewers to hear a little

and his girlfriend were jet skis off the beach in highlands. and i had ran up to my house to get food and some other stuff for us down there. and he was on the wave runner and he never told me anything what he was going to do and he took off for brooklyn to show his girlfriend the skyline and everything up here. now, i call him and he is like well, we have a problem. i just ran out of gas. so i got into his car, and i got some gas cans and drove up to brooklyn and now i wasn't expecting to get back on the wave runner. i had sweatpants on and was not prepared for it and i got up there and he told me that he really didn't want to drive it back. so i wound up getting on the wave runner in brooklyn and leaving from there. and as i was leaving the harbor, i had some problems where i got thrown off the wave runner. i didn't think there was anything wrong with it. but i checked the wave runner, got back up on the wave runner and left for sandy hook.

i got about two or three miles off the shore of sandy hook where the wave runner started to bog down and started to skip. next thing you know just completely shut off on me. >> oh boy, started taking on water? >> i opened up the back compartment of the seat and all i could see was water. >> where did you see the buoy? >> it was off to the left-hand side of me. and at first that wasn't my plan at all. i just wanted to get in the water and swim to shore. but after i realized i couldn't fight the current, i couldn't, you know, make it past the current, i just went with the current. >> what time of night was this now when you held on to this buoy? >> i left brooklyn 6:30. took me 45 minutes to get there i would say around 7:15, 7:20. >> night fall approaching. nobody in sight. how were you trying to signal for someone to come help you? >> i was blowing a whistle that you are required to wear. and the beach didn't seem too far away but i was blowing a whistle hoping someone would hear me. i was yelling and screaming.

take to the different counties all around iowa. has your strategy changed? are you focusing more on different issues this time that will resonate more with voters? >> well, look, i'm a candidate that talks about all the issues because there are so many important issues facing this country from iran and iran deal and isis and trying to defeat isis and what we bring as a unique experience there as someone who has been battling against the nuclear iran, author of the iranian sanctions ten years ago. i'm the only candidate in

this race featured on isis magazine labeled an enemy of isis. so they know who i am. i know who they are. i have been working this issue for a long time. that's a very high priority issue for the people of iowa and frankly across the country. we have a lot of issues. senator santorum. you won in that state four years ago. so what happened? did the people in iowa just forget about you or have times changed? has the climate just completely different now? >> well, as i think all of you know, after the 2012 race. we went out and went back -- i went back to work. i have seven kids and going through college and other types of things. so i had to go get a job and work for a living and, you know, i didn't spend the last four years running for president. i decided earleier i would

have to start over again. we are out here doing what we did last time. building a grass roots organization. letting people know we are back. and that we have something positive to offer to get this country back on the right track. both from the standpoint of our national security. the cultural issues, frankly, are probably more important now than they were four years ago with the planned parenthood videos, with the supreme court has done on marriage. and i think people are looking for someone who is willing to stand up on all of these issues and articulate the values that made our country great and restore them so we can have a prosperous and good and free and safe country again. >> senator, you said one of the reasons you went back to work you weren't running for president. outsider, donald trump, business mogul has been working too and reality show and all of that is he making huge waves. his poll numbers are through the roof. is he going to be coming in on a helicopter today. i want to get your take on the sound bite of him yesterday in new hampshire slamming some of the g.o.p. contenders. listen to this. >> i have been attacked now by perry of texas, and he

went bing like a rocket ship except in the wrong direction. i was attacked by lindsey graham and he had two points and now he has zero. now, rand paul has very few points but i think he is going down, too. i will say one further thing about rand paul then let's not waste a lot of time. rand paul is using the people of kentucky. either run for senate, and do a good job. or run for president. you don't run for president and, by the way, if i don't make at this will become your senator reluctantly. >> a lot of people said this is the summer of the shark. donald trump said it's the summer of trump. is is the wave going to crash? >> what i found out that four years ago there was a poll taken i think yesterday four years ago that had rick perry at 29% and mitt romney at 18 and michele bachmann at 12. i was at 1%. tied for last with john huntsman and four months later i won the iowa caucuses. what i know about iowa and

what i know about politics is what happens in august generally stays in august. this is a long, long race. there is going to be a lot of more focus on the issues. what candidates stand for. what their record is is what they want to accomplish. i know the people of iowa pretty well. and new hampshire likewise. they will get down to serious discussions about who should be president of the united states. not who is someone that might be an interesting figure that might be a, you know, someone to pay attention to for a while. >> senator, the two men at the top of the republican rankings in iowa right now. trump and carson, neither one of them has a day of political experience. that seems to be what people like right now. you can never claim that. so how would you go about trying to take some of that support away and try to convince them that somebody who has been in washington for years who has been a politician for a long time that they have known for a long time, should get their support instead?

>> well, i have been outside of government for almost 10 years. and i'm as frustrated as they are about the workings of government. i think it's important. you know, i'm not going to come to somebody and say, you know, let me do your heart surgery or, you know, let me manage your fortune 500 business youment someone who has experience to be able to accomplish some things to get things going. we have had experience with someone cominged into the white house recently that had very little experience and hasn't worked out very well for this country. we are a country that's on the precipice of war, i believe, in the middle east. we have very aggressive neighbors to the south and i believe -- even though president obama has established diplomatic relations with cuba. cuba is turning the entire southern hemisphere against the united states. we have serious problems here. and we need someone who has experience of getting things done. and i'm the only person in this race who has a strong record of accomplishment as an outsider in washington, d.c.

i want to start with you. you think it's a bad idea, why? >> it's a terrible move. it's another example of big pharm trying to find new customers. targeting this to preteens and teens. the most vulnerable group probably in our society in terms of addiction to opiates and often leading to abuse and use of heroin. we know. this it's an epidemic in our country. and nobody is asking the question were doctors clamoring prior to thursday's prowment for powerful drugs for preteens. >> doctor, were doctors clamoring for more powerful drugs for preteens and what about the point that he makes that just how addictive these drugs can be? >> well, listen, clayton, intense chronic pain is absolutely something for which doctors need new weapons and, yes, there are some potential addiction issues here.

but is 1 and 12-year-olds hitting the street to buy heroin, i don't think so. with all due respect. >> doctor, i have to jump in here. >> with all due respect to attorney mckenna. >> let me just finish. you don't need to jump in let me finish. i will let you go because i'm the professional here so you go right ahead. >> this is the reality, doctor. and we know that middle school students are bringing in prescription drugs that they typically get from this medicine cabinets prescribed by doctors. now i don't know if psychiatrists prescribe oxycontin or not. i'm not aware of that i have withdrawn from oxycontin. i was 30 years old. >> you bought heroin on the streets and broke the law many times, didn't you. >> that's absolutely true. can you cross-examine me all you want and i wrote a book about it and i'm traveling the country talking to different groups about it and i'm not just a talking head with with all due respect. okay, so that led me, when the doctor said no more oxycontin, it is such a powerful drug, that i had to

do something. >> had you to? how about detox? did you detox? >> you are a layperson when it comes to this. >> no, i'm a psychiatrist. >> unfortunately, have you never experienced the reality and the pain of oxycontin. >> i go through it with patients all the time. >> but in reality. >> when i was a reporter in to cover the oxycontin epidemic down there and interviewed oxycontin addicts. it's was a horrible horrible time to watch these addicts go through. this. >> it's terrible. >> answer that specific question about these young kids getting access. and that's where a lot of these kids i interviewed in west virginia were getting access to these drugs. >> right. >> it's all well and good until it's your kid. and if you have a child with complex regional pain syndrome or cluster headaches or cancer, you would be asking the doctor, you can relieve my child's suffering? it's very nice for attorney mckenna to come up here and say listen, i was addicted to heroin. listen, i would like to hear your life story before the addiction to heroin and some of the factors that may i

have led to that emotionally. bottom line is it's all well and good to talk public policy, but, when your kid is the one who can't cope, who is suffering from unbearable pain, big pharm is your friend. nice to paint them with black hats. they cure illnesses. they aren't devils, they're entrepreneurs who cure illnesses and you are doing disservice. >> what if it was your kid that had had this chronic pain. >> there are other ways to treat connick pain. currently fentanyl patches are available for children. >> that's another opiate. >> entirely monitored and careful situations and i think the prescription would be okay. i think it would have to be in a hospital setting or hospice setting and either that or. >> you think until your kid at home. >> very very involved in the children's lives and make sure that they don't fall into the wrong hands. >> dr. ablow. >> that's reality. >> dr. ablow, quick final

you want to find out what's happening with the american economy. and all you hear about is trump flying in on a helicopter to the iowa state fair. to be honest. he has tapped into a sense that washington is out of control and that it doesn't matter which party is in control, things don't seem to change. but that's why i'm running. because you have to not just win the election. you have to be able to actually change washington. and i know i can do that because they had the same complaint about new york. nothing ever seems to change. i got elected with an overwhelmingly democratic state assembly. i put in place sweeping changes in the most blue state in america. i know i can do it in washington. people want that. and that's why i'm running. >> people want to change washington. so, to your point, i mean, do you think a governor, a former governor would be the best choice for the g.o.p. nod coming in to 2016 because of that executive experience and being a washington outsider? >> well, anna, you know, in my self-interest to say it

should be a governor. i have seen some governors i would not want running their state let alone washington. so, yes, if you have executive experience and a proven ability to change a large complex government with conservative policies. and i'm running because i think i have shown that. and i had this vision as to what we can do in washington. work together, bring people together. actually solve the problems facing america. and that's what i think the american people want to see. >> and, governor, you did say that part of the reason that you are so far down in the polls right now is because us in the media aren't talking about you as much. do you really think that our talking about trump on a helicopter is the reason that you are down in the bottom tier right now? >> no, no. i don't think that effects me. but it does effect trump. because that's all that the media is talking about. he is the one in the press constantly. and that's fine. that's the way it is today. but i have to make the case myself. i know that i have to go out there with-an requested as to how to throw out the tax

you're at a loss for words. >> i got to see her play volleyball many years ago in los angeles. i was at a loss for words then and i'm sure i will be today. peter taosy is here. big news in iowa. >> and it's another day of fried food and politics. >> five candidates visit the fair to mingle with hawkeye state voters and maybe get something to eat. >> fox news chief political correspondent carl cameron is live at the fair in december moin moines. good morning. >> reporter: they'll probably get lots of something to eat. if they don't, they blow it. you have to eat some kind of food, shake a lot of hands and if you're running for president do wit a smile on your face not wi withstanding higher than 90-degree heat and massive crowd. today the headliners are hillary clinton and donald trump. the first saturday of a ten-day

fair. this is one of the days of the biggest attendance here. there's probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 120,000 people will come through the gates. it will be a million by the time it's all done at the end of the ten days. to put it in context, that's about how many people are going to vote in the republican caucus here in iowa and perhaps as many as 150,000 or 170,000 democrats. so there's an awful lot of folks here who really matter and hillary clinton sort of stet seth the stage last night because she knows she's going to be sharing the fair grounds with donald trump today as well as rick santorum whob on the so pitch. she gave everybody a stiff-armed shiver letting the republicans know she's not going to take any of it from them, essentially saying any criticism of her is rank partisanship and should be dismissed as political sniping and not really serious. take a listen to this. >> i won't pretend that this is anything other than what it is,

the same old partisan games we see so many times before. so i don't care how many sup superpacs and republicans pile on. i've been fighting for families and underdogs my entire life, and i'm not going to stop now. i know most of the attention these days is on a certain flamboyant front-runner. but don't let the circus distract you. if you look at their policies, most of the other candidates are just trump without the pizazz or the hair. >> hillary clinton on the eve of her appearance at the iowa state fair. she'll be here about 10:30 this morning. that's when she's expected to arrive. there will be a huge ent ranl, lots of press. it will clog a lot of the streets here in the fair which are already filled with people and by the end of the day they'll be elbow to elbow and then comes donald trump around 12:30. he'll fly on his private plane

from laguardia to here. from there his chopper, having already been delivered for him, will then bring him from the airport in des moines here to a landing patch just outside the gates of the fair grounds. then he'll walk around. and the speculation about what does donald trump wear at the state fair, what does hillary clinton wear at the state fair? will she wear ferragamos or sneakers? will trump wear the hat that says "make america great" again? will he go capless? will he wear comfortable shoes? will he take off a suit and put on some slacks and maybe a jersey? this is where political journalism takes us when you get to the iowa state fair. >> it's not just about the food and what people are wearing. iowa is very important. some people are going, man, the caucus is six months out. why are all eye on the hawkeye state right now? why is it so important? tell us about the organization. break it down. >> well, we're six months out from the iowa caucuses. they'll take place in february. they start the process. everybody says that the presidential campaign is a marathon not a sprint.

once the voting starts it's very much going to be a sprint next year. more than half the delegates for the nomination will be selected in less than 6 1/2 weeks. but the campaign to get to next february actually started more than a year and a half ago. for some of these candidates it was in the case of rick santorum, it started long before the 2012 campaign. in the case of mike huckabee, he ran in 2008 and some have been at it literally all of their adult lives, aspiring to this. the pomp and circumstance, the glad handing, what's often referred to as retail politicking, seems trivial as prom king or queen contest, but it's not. people in iowa, people in new hampshire are very, very demanding and discerning because they're accustomed to seeing the candidates in circumstances like this where they're just another person at the fair or at least they'll try to be. and how they communicate, how up front they are, how quick they are to answer a question without a lot of political rhetoric is a huge part of the test. the policy debates frankly are

often ironed out between the candidates themselves, at debates, arguing through the media with who's got the better policy, whether it's inter-republican battling or democrat on democrat, same thing that bernie sanders has been doing to hillary clinton, same sort of thing many of the candidates have been doing to jeb bush and lot of candidates are now trying to do to donald trump because he's the front-runner. that's the nature of this. the policy debate often slushes out a lot of the differences but the personal character, the morality, the affability, whether they can get along with anybody, you have to eat a corn dog to get to that. >> one of the big irk shoes was the straw poll. they got rid of that this year. last year michele bachmann won it, and she was making headline. it used to be used to knock out some of those lower-tier candidates but with a field this large this time around, is getting rid of the straw poll there a smart move? >> sure. well, i mean, you could argue

that for any political party or political exercise to end an event that brings 40,000 people together no one place to talk politics for a weekend seems counterproductive. that's what they did. 30,000 to 40,000 people would get together for a weekend, talk politics, hear speeches and at the end have an unofficial vote. when you consider that the republican caucuses will max out and break a record with 120,000 in turnout, to get 30,000 or 40,000 people on one university campus to talk politics, that's an incredible sample of where the sentiment of the iowa republican caucus is at exactly this time of year. it used to be in the first week of august. and it had been around for a number of cycles. it was totally undeterminative in terms of the winner. in fact,s the never, ever right. one time the straw poll, i think george w. bush, was the only guy who won the straw poll and went on to win both in iowa and the nomination and ultimately the presidency. what it did do was in the words of the vernacular, political

parlance, it winnowed the field. takes ten candidates, knocks it down to six or seven, a manageable number. think about being in iowa if you're an earnest young kid getting the first chance to vote at 18 years old. there are tons at the field. i met a 12-year-old yesterday who rattled off all 17 names. these kids are serious. they have to look at 17 kids? that's going to be harder than any social studies test they'll have. this is serious business. >> carl, really quick, i'm looking at the list of the new food there at the fair. i want to know what you are going to have before the lines get really long. i see the apple pie on a stick, the chocolate covered chunky bacon maple nougat on a stick. >> did that yesterday. did that yesterday. but that second one you talked about, the chocolate cover theed thing, did it yesterday. it was pretty good. hard to finish. a lot of sugar. >> campaign carl. thank you. nine minutes after the hour.

other stories making headlines on your saturday morning. extreme weather, severe storms sweeping through the great lakes, michigan, heavy rain and strong winds kaucaused a stage collapse at an outdoor concert in flint, michigan. fortunately, no one hurt. in wisconsin, storms knocking down trees at the pga championship and halting the second round so people could take cover. wind up to 65 miles an hour toppling tents, scoreboards, and camera towers. no one hurt. and almost unimaginable. that's how police are describing the murder of three people in florida allegedly by an illegal teenage immigrant. 19-year-old brian hyde is charged with killing his aunt, his pregnant cousin, and her boyfriend. all three victims stabbed several times inside their home. hyde, who is from belize, is being held without bond. terrorists coming to america? gitmo detainees could be transferred to the united states. the department of justice is

scouting both ft. leavenworth in kansas and the naval brig in south carolina as possible sites to hold gitmo inmates. it's technically illegal to transfer any detainees to u.s. soil, making the scouting trips even more troubling. kansas lawmakers vow to stop the administration's plans. and he's used to telling people, "you're fired." now donald trump may have the chance to say "you're guilty." the presidential candidate reports for jury duty in manhattan on monday. he was fined for missing five previous summonses. his campaign says he never saw them because they were sent to the wrong address. trump says he is looking forward to it. >> wouldn't be hard with multiple addresses that he has. >> going to be great. normally when they ask a jury, what do you think of this, what do you think of this? we already know what he thinks about everything, unapologetically. that will be entertaining. also entertaining, rick reichmuth with a hot forecast. >> which trump hotel do you send it to?

right move joining us mike ramos, san bernardino d.a., supporting the death penalty, and maurice sharah from an organization covering america's criminal justice system. thanks for coming. >> thanks for having me. >> all right. so these two men who were convicted of one of the most heinous crimes, one of the hardest to hear the details about crimes, killing a beautiful -- most of a beautiful family, they get to laive now. maurice, is that accept to believe you? >> personally, i mean, i don't feel like i have a stake in it, but having looked at it for a number of years i think the fact they're being spared is sort of symbolic in the was in which over the u.s. support for death penalty is gradually in decline. a lot of prosecutors aren't seeking it as often. we can look at these individual awful cases and say do they

deserve to die in some sort of grand sense, absolutely. but, you know, do we have a judicial system that's ensuring fairness for most people, that's a more complex question, which is what the judges were kind of trying to parse out in this decision. >> mike, what do you think about that? >> first of all, it was a terrible ruling. >> why? >> nobody's talking tact victims and the victims' rights. where is that? and then you want to take the broader brush and talk about the death penalty across the united states of america? there are 31 states that still have capital punishment including my state, the state of california. and we have the most humane capital litigation and death penalty in the entire world when you compare it to others. so i really think that when you start talking about justice and what justice means, we knee to start talking about the victims and their families. we need to talk about preventing future murders so this doesn't

happen again. and that poor family in connecticut, what happened to that wife, a 17-year-old, an 11-year-old young girls, brutally murdered, set the house on fire while the girls were alive, that is absolutely horrendous. >> mike, you want to talk about the victims and the families. the death penalty, the big argument in favor of it is that it's a deterrent that some bad guys won't commit a murder because they don't want to get killed by the state themselves. is it still an effective deterrent? >> i truly believe it still is and it's going to be even more of an effective deterrent when we start implementing it in a timely manner. and that's something we want to fix in the state of california. we want to get rid of this delay, delay tactic, some appeals lasting 25 to 30 years, and the evidence keeps getting stronger, that it's just a delay tactic. once we get these in place and get the executions and the death sentences, it will be even a

bigger deterrent. >> and maurice, i know another argument against the death penalty is that it's just very, very expensive. but what do you think? do you think it's deterrent? do you think bad guys out there are not committing murders because they could be exkupted but now that it's gone there's going to be an uptick in homicides? >> you know, it's been hard because i haven't had the opportunity to interview anybody who's considering committing a murder perhaps thankfully, but, you know, i think that the deterrent effect of the death penalty is something that researchers have been trying to understand far lot of years. there isn't sort of a firm, clear way on it one way or another. i mean, i don't think that anybody who's on death row said, you know, i thought about whether or not i would be executed but i went ahead with it anyway. it's not something that you actually hear people sort of talk about on the ground when they're thinking about these issues. >> all right. but we're talking about it today. mike ramos and maurice chammah. thank you very much. do negative people make you

you're meaningfully activating people in your life and sometimes you get love in return but that's not why we do it. >> journaling about what you love in your spouse or something. finally, conversations with a power lead. so starting conversations with a power lead. what does that mean? >> well, what we see is that if i know the fist few things that are said in a conversation scientifically we have a very good chance of predicting the outcome or the trajectory. so the power lead is taking the lead on a conversation starting with something positive. when someone asks you, hi, how are you, off chance to set the tone. if we say i'm stressed, i'm tired, start complaining about something, guess what, other people match our emotions, they offer up something like that, or they meet us with compassion. either way we're not unlocking the full potential of the brain because we're not focusing on something positive and empowering. >> we need a little happiness. the book is called "broadcasting happiness. welcome back. the head of the epa responding to criticism that her agency moved too slowly in alerting the public about the millions of gallons of gold mine waste that was accidentally spilled into the colorado river. >> i am absolutely deeply sorry that this ever happened, but i want to make sure that we react

positively and in a way that's credible and we move this forward. >> but an environmental activist, erin brockovich, says the epa's apology isn't going to cut it and she joins me now. erin, nice to see you this morning. >> hey, good to see you. how are you? >> i'm doing well. what did you think of her response and the agency's message the other day? >> well, i'm sure that they are truly, deeply sorry, and if you go back when this spill originally occurred, they weren't overly concerned because for them the river was already dead. and what most people don't realize is that this mine has been leaking, to their knowledge, for 20-plus years. so it's already killed the river. there was reports that came out a week in advance from mining engineers that this was getting ready to happen, and it happened. so i'm sure the apology is heart felt. it's a little too late. and we have now polluted this

river much more than it already was. it's in the sediment. and it will be a long, long cleanup process, if they ever do it. >> 3 million gallons of this toxic sludge into this major river system according to the epa. you think that they should have done four things to minimize the damage on this. you said number one, start with full disclosure about what happened. you thought they were holding their hands a little bit, sitting on their hands and not coming out with this public metsage. >> they are. and, you know, i've been doing this for 20 years across the country and in and out of the superfund sites that the epa has. honestly we call them a super failure. i understand that agency is overburdened, understaffed, and frankly they have absolutely no money. the clean ups they are doing in the superfund site whence they do them is clearly passed off to the taxpayer. now, they absolutely knew that that mine had been leaking into that river for 20-plus years.

so it's more than 3 million gallons. it just happened to be 3 million gallons when it burst. but over time it's been much more than that. >> you said take all efforts to minimize the damage to the environment. that looks like a massive mess. how with can they minimize the damage now? >> well, they're going to have to monitor. that's something that -- you know, we can see the governor drinking the walter, and that's all good and well, but the pollution is not gone. it's in the sediment. and it could be a drudging process. it could be a monitoring process, monitoring of the wildlife, the fish life in there, and cleanup of these abandoned mines exists -- there's like 500,000 in the western united states that could be well into the billions of dollars. so they will have to continue a monitoring program. >> we'll get you out of here on this. you also think some people should be fired if necessary. but you know government. no one ever loses their job in government.

do you think that's going to happen? >> probably not, but i think this is something that we really are going to have to start looking at. are these water issues in the country and this agency, and they have no funding, and they're in a really difficult spot. but we're going to have to start finding some solutions. this is a battle and dance between the regulator and the regulated, and it just continues to go on and we're ending up with crisis and disaster everywhere. this will happen again. and i really think it's time that we finally start looking at some solutions to these problems. and i'm sorry, i know the epa does their best, but the job is not getting done. >> erin brockovich keeping up the good fight. we appreciate you joining us. thanks. >> thank you for having me. coming up on the show, gabrielle reece taking heat for saying being truly feminine means being soft and receptive

comments you said and the reaction there's been? >> listen, i understand the reaction. i think the better word would have been service, the notion of when you live in your home and as a female, especially i was really talking about in the context of an alpha male, when your partner, especially when you have children, there's a certain amount of service. and it's just understanding how do you go alpha in your world, you're working, doing your thing, and in home that subtle nuance and shift. submissive was a very tricky word, but really that's the tone i was saying because i just think that that helps things flow better at least in my house. >> being a strong woman in your professional life doesn't mean you can't celebrate your differences with your husband in the home. >> that's right. we always say equal, but we are different. >> very true. >> all right. we wanted to ask you that. now can you please show us the new workout? >> this is high x and everyone's going to get going. we're going to do partner cable rows. this is a class we're putting in 24-hour fitnesses. let's get everyone going. you guys start. >> what do we want to do?

>> everyone says we're busy, we don't have time, we're busy, we're bored. everyone has a teammate. you want to start doing high knee runs with her. so what we can do is each station for three minutes and you'll do something explosive for 30 seconds, now have them do recovery, then they'll be at each station for six mini sets, right? 30, then they switch sides. now they're stretching for cardio. in an hour you get everything done, you have achieved balance. >> jumping jacks. >> you can do this with a partner always? >> you always have a teammate. so i use the background of having sports and being accountable and being motivated by others and the sense of community but yet you're doing strength training, cardio, balance, stretching. >> so here -- >> he would squat for three minutes and after three minutes he would go here. you and mark could if you want. >> this will get your heart going. >> okay. we're going to move on.

you guys can move on. >> ab roller. >> peter is doing high knees right here. >> now moving from high knees -- >> cardio for three minutes. now what we're doing is he's down, a little fatigued, stretch. back 30 seconds for high knee runs. there's the notion of diverse groups working together, male and female, all different ages. and your team reflects more of your type, your fitness level, your age. >> work out while i'm running in place. >> it can be a big group of 200 people. she's working her footwork, her cardio. then we give her recovery for the next 30. going back and forth. then we have dumbbells and strength training and things like that. >> the great thing about this is that a personal trainer costs a lot of money, but in this you're getting everything. >> and mark would be walking around or i would be walking around saying watch your spine, giving them special attention in the group fightness environment.

i like that aspect too. they're walking around. they're basically a coach. >> that's awesome. >> it's been, what, a minute and half? you're burning so many calories, working out efficiently. then you don't have to waste an hour and a half. >> everything has a regression and a modification so if you're really fit you can go all the way. if you're starting out, there's a way to modify it so you can do it safely. you have about 15 seconds in between stations so once we start rolling, you work it. >> we'll find out how peter is doing when we come back from this. >> thank you so much.
