corn dogs are wake, and so are we. we're bringing you a live shot from the iowa state fair. all candidates are coming to make a stop. they know this is an important state. they're also coming here because it's an easy and fun way to meet and greet a lot of voters. a million people will come through the gates over the course of next days. pataki will be here. carson is number two in the polls in iowa. they'll answer questions, meet voters, stand on the soap box, eat fried foods. there's 70 foods on a stick including the bacon bomb, fried cheesecake on a stick. this fair is on the one of 1,000 must-do things before you die. there's the arm wrestling and fiddlers contest as well. why is other i a so important? february 1st, this is the first

a news crew doused with fire as firefighters battle four massive wildfires. 100 homes destroyed east of seattle forcing 1500 to flee. thanks. the belief a place of worship is sacred and safe shattered when a gunman walked through the doors in the church in charleston, south carolina is and opened fire on a bible study group. nine were killed that day. since that day, a pastor has been looking for ways to keep his congregation safe. the reverend joining us now with why he decided to do this. why have you decided to arm ten members of congregation?

>> clayton, first, good morning. there has to be atmosphere of safety the for parishioners. when they don't feel safe and that being in mind, we have to keep in mind that everybody who has a concealed weapon permit or a gun the doesn't know how to use it in certain scenarios. the key is having people know how to handle situations. it welcomes a safer place for people wanting to defend for themselves. >> why did you select these specific ten members? >> we have not selected the ten as of yet. we're in the process. we're in talks with local law enforcement on the best ways to do it. it's a lot of questions to be

answered. questions on the right weapons to use, the -- how do we engage and disengage, a lot of training those who are selected have to go through background checks. these things will make it worth it. it's not necessarily the focussing upon guns but focussing on a process or a method of handling this. >> pastor, as you were talking, i couldn't help but take the 30,000 view of this now. it's sad we're having this conversation. does it break your heart we're having this conversation in our society today? >> absolutely. it's really hard to believe we're here. for me, when i started doing research on it googling, one website had that in 11 years, there have been 18 church shootings.

in 18 church shootings, more than 82 people died. >> you're not -- >> died of wounds. >> this is not something you're unfamiliar with. you had an incident at your church in 2002. tell us about that. >> i was going to have a meeting with a member and some of my deacon staff. a young man walked up and wanted to talk. as we shared in my office, eventually by that night from 7:00 to 3:00 in the morning, we ended up being kidnapped. i, along with eight other people. it ended up in a police shootout where five were shot. >> wow. so you're not a stranger to this type of violence in the church setting. reverend, keep in touch with us. we'd love to hear how this comes together with local law enforcement and what you're doing to protect your church. reverend clark, we appreciate you joining us this morning. >> thank you for having me.

search and rescue teams saying the weather is very bad in the mountainous area where the plane was last heard from. an 18-day manhunt comes to an end over night in california after official say the suspect has been shot and killed. two deputies attempted to stop 34-year-old benjamin ashley when they spotted him on a roadway. he pulled out a gun and that's when the deputies opened fire, killing him. ashley was suspected was killing a retire dentist, taking three men hostage and shooting two deputies. he will be officially identified tomorrow. and cruise ship, workers feared dead after falling overboard off the coast of canada. the search was just called off. rescuers saying there is little hope he could still be found alive in the water. the cruiseline did not give details how the worker ended up

and flights are finally getting back on schedule after a computer glitch delayed hundreds of planes up and down the east coast. the problem at an air traffic control center in virginia, halted service to the busiest airports, including flights from new york and washington, d.c. a flight map from the type of the incident shows how planes were forced to ply around the affected areas. the faa blames an automation problem. and a life or death situation and it's all caught on dash cam video. a state trooper rushes to revive a truck driver after a crash. >> come on! come on! ohio state trooper and the trucker he saved, jonathan, reunited on our air. the officer describing a tense rescue. >> i was able to step up in the truck with him.
