their story. i'm harris walker. this is the fox report. u.s. airmen spender stone, national guard alex and college senior anthony sadler spoke today at a news conference in paris. the three childhood friends were traveling from amsterdam to paris on a train carrying 500 people when a gunman entered their car armed with an assault rival. nine magazines, a handgun and box cutter that they could see. here's how three americans say it all went down. >> i turned around and i saw he had, what looked to be an ak-47 and it looked like it was jammed or not working and he was trying to charge the weapon and alec hit me on the shoulder and said let's go. >> the gunman would have been successful if my friend spencer had not gotten up. >> alec got up and gabd the gun out of his hand while i put him in a chokehold. he kept pulling weapons out left anticipate right. pulled out a handgun. took out a box cutter.
1:02 am
started jabbing at me with that. choke him unconscious while alec was hitting him in the head with the pistol. i can't remember. >> i feel our training mostly kicked in after this assailant was subdued, frankly. when it came to medical care and things like that. and providing security, making sure there wasn't another shooter. in the beginning it was just gut instinct. >> seemed like he was ready to fight to the end. so were we. >> how about that? the u.s. ambassador to france you see her there on the left, says those three demonstrated the very best of america. and prevented what could have been a tragedy with mass casualties. now focus turns to the counterterrorism police as they investigate. will carr is life on our west coast newsroom. we've been reading a lot about the suspect. what have you firmed up? >> reporter: we know right now
1:03 am
anti-terror police in france are continuing to question this suspect. we've also learned that he was on the radar of at least three countries for being a radical islamist leading up to friday's attack. now according to the associated press, the suspect is ayoub el khazzani. a moroccan national in his mid-20s. he's lived in spain, belgium and france. am three of the countries aware ever his radical beliefs. spanish authorities said they kept him under surveillance due to past drug trafficking activities until he left spain in 2014. spanish security forces alerted the french calling ayoub el khazzani a dangerous radical. authorities saying ayoub el khazzani spent time in syria last year. that said the americans who stopped the man reporting to be ayoub el khazzani pointed out his ak-47 jammed and his pistol wasn't loaded properly. >> he clearly had no firearms training whatsoever and, yes, if
1:04 am
he knew what he was doing or even just got lucky and did the right thing he would have been able to operate through all eight of those magazines and we would have been in trouble and probably wouldn't be here today along with a lot of other people. >> reporter: we heard from ayoub el khazzani's attorney today. she says that according to ayoub el khazzani he was homeless and that he found the bag with weapons in a park nearby and said he simply wanted to rob the train for money, that he was shocked when people started calling him a suspected terrorist. we have an exact quote from his attorney. we translated it. she says so he took some weapons, got on the train to rob the passengers and he says he wanted to shoot out a train window and jump out of this train to escape. but as one of the american heroes said in that press conference you don't need nine magazines to rob a train. >> i'm confused. he said he found a gun in a bag but then his attorney said he took some weapons. europe i understand is on alert
1:05 am
right now. >> reporter: yeah. they absolutely are. they are on alert for more potential train attraction especially on high alert in france. earlier we had attacks on "charlie hebdo" in january. after that there was a crackdown in certain parts of europe on radicals including a belgian. authorities believe that could have pushed ayoub el khazzani out of the country. europeans returning from iraq or syria is the most serious terror threat that europe has faced since 9/11. they are also going take the time tomorrow to honor the three american heroes. they are going meet with president francois hollande of france where he'll thank them for their courage when they raced towards those gun shots instead of away from them. >> will carr thank you very much. we're watching this unfold as

well. a massive fire at a u.s. army depot in japan. here's what we know. in just the past few hours there have been a series of explosions. people saying they could see and hear them from miles away. this is an area 25 miles outside of tokyo. the pentagon issued a statement saying no one was hurt and that base firefighters and local first responders are at the scene. we heard from the defense department as well today. they say no hazardous materials are housed in this building but working to find out exactly what was there. although officials say no ammunition was stored there because first reports had ammo there. troops don't live on that base but 200 people do work there. now let's go to wall street where we could see a very turbulence day tomorrow and maybe on into the week. u.s. stocks closed deep in the red on friday capping off a dismal week. the dow fell 1,000 points in five days wiping out $1.4 trillion in value. that will hit your 401(k) and

1:08 am
particularly, back-to-back days of 300 points down or more. the first time in many years. do you expect a repeat of that? >> let's hope not. that's dramatic, losing over 1,000 points for the week on the dow. certainly there are those that would say we were due for a 10% correction. we were six years in an up market which was fueled in a large part by the federal reserve that had low interest rates. but china has been a trigger for some selling. but also we have corporate profits not as good as we thought they would be in the u.s. we're paying lower money for gas right now. that's good news. it turn out they are not buying things they are paying off household debt. so companies are not seeing the profits they thought they would see. >> can you talk to me a little bit about oil. we saw late part last week oil dipped to below $40 a barrel. you said that's "good for you" and me at the pump if it ever trickles there. >> it's still pretty expensive.
1:09 am
there are those say be under $2 across the country by tend of the year. not good for the energy sector. we lost a lot of jobs in the energy sector and that drags the markets down because there are a lot of energy related companies that are on the s&p 500. we have to wait and see. the saudis, opec countries have not reduced their drilling. they don't want to lose market share. by the way the saudi arabiian markets lost 7% today. >> what happens if iran can put their oil on the market. >> that adds to the glut of oil. even more oil available on the market and that could push the price down even more. >> ashley webster always a pleasure to have you here. you'll be in tonight because you have a big show coming up. fox business network has your money covered. don't miss special coverage tonight to get you ready for trading tomorrow. fox special business report market correction. it will be hosted by stu varny
