"fox & friends" starts now. good morning to you. it is august 25th, tuesday. i'm elisabeth hasselbeck. tragedy on the track. indy car driver justin wilson has died from his injuries after being hit with debris from sunday's crash and this morning the critics waving the checkered flag on safety. a live report for you straight ahead. market mayhem, stocks sent on a roller coaster ride yesterday. the dow plunged more than 1,000 points shortly after it opened. so far things are looking up.

joining us with the latest. >> race car drivers say they love what they do and they do understand the risks that are involved in this sport but this latest tragedy is raising questions about what can be done to increase safety there on the tracks. driver justin wilson was hit in the head from debris at another car at the pennsylvania race track over the weekend. his car then veered into a wall. he was airlifted by a helicopter to a hospital where he died last night. this morning, the racing community is, of course, mourning. >> we just want to offer our sincere condolences to justin's family. obviously, justin was a great professional driver and extremely good at his craft. beyond that, you know, he was a great guy. >> wilson's death raising the debate about the safety of the open cockpits. the cars that they drive in are totally open. in 2011, indy car driver dan we woulden was also -- when his head hit a post in a fence after

his car went airborne and in 2009, henry sterdes died after an f-2 race after being hit by a wheel from another car. wilson said in an interview and he and other drivers were always trying to make racing safer, but added it is a race car. we are racing hard and when it goes wrong it can get messy. >> by the way, at 6'4" he was the tallest guy on the circuit and his nickname was the gentle giant. >> i can't believe he got in that car. those guys are usually little guys. >> he grew up in england racing cars and since the age of 13 he has worked to p increase awareness about safety. there's a lot going on. we're going to bring on stuart varney to talk about what's happening with the markets

ak-47. that man, mark, jumped up. the gun man pulled out a pistol, shot him in the back, in the lung, and went out with his neck. >> spencer, the man with the shorter hair, even though he was beat up and cut under the eye, he was the one who stopped the bleeding for mark, and his wife would later say as she ran for help and look for a doctor, no doubt about it, spencer saved her life his life. >> the air force secretary said this. >> what the gunman didn't expect however was a confrontation with our very own captain america and believe it or not that is what airman stone's friends nicknamed during air force technical training. had it not been for this air force quart at the time, i'm quite sure we would be sitting here discussing a blood bath.

video is an illustration that the border environment, including a linear border environment of crime does not stop, does not sleep. the issue here is that they are still testing for vulnerabilities and seams along our border. the cartels don't go legitimate just because there are greater resources brought to the border. those greater resources were all brought and practically stopped in 2009, they were brought by the bush administration, the doubling of the manpower, the bringing on more infrastructure and technology. all of this pretty much occurred during the last administration. so it has been nearly seven years and just now we're finally getting to see new technology, including where that video was shown. new technology is finally coming on after nearly 7 years with this administration. this administration's focus, of course, is tacit amnesty what

they are looking to do is draw attention away to clear victory at the border so they can get on to -- it's not even comprehensive immigration reform as we like to refer to because this president has no qualms about circumventing legislation. it may not be reform from legislation. >> what do you mean by tacit amnesty? does that mean the border patrol have told you that they are told to just turn a blind eye to some of the traffic coming through? >> god bless the men and women of the border patrol who resist that pressure from the white house. i.c.e. morale, another brother agency in the department of homeland security, which oversees deportations and removals of criminal nationals that are threats to this country and investigates interior crime such as the one that occurred in san francisco, they have been ordered by their leadership to look the other way.

the chief of police in detroit, michigan james craig says that legal gun ownership can help deter crime. seems the stats are proving the chief right n. 2014 the police department issued over 1100 handgun permits while 8100 guns were registered. as the gun registration grow, homicide, shootings, robberies, all going down. coincidence or something else? chief craig joins us live from detroit. chief, why did you feel you should go out and tell people in detroit they should pack heat? >> well, you know, it was based on a number of things. i had a lot of experience in other cities certainly. my time in maine was a pivotal part of me taking another look at effect of what good americans who are armed can have on
