joining us with the latest. >> race car drivers say they love what they do and they do understand the risks that are involved in this sport but this latest tragedy is raising questions about what can be done to increase safety there on the tracks. driver justin wilson was hit in the head from debris at another car at the pennsylvania race track over the weekend. his car then veered into a wall. he was airlifted by a helicopter to a hospital where he died last night. this morning, the racing community is, of course, mourning. >> we just want to offer our sincere condolences to justin's family. obviously, justin was a great professional driver and extremely good at his craft. beyond that, you know, he was a great guy. >> wilson's death raising the debate about the safety of the open cockpits. the cars that they drive in are totally open. in 2011, indy car driver dan we woulden was also -- when his head hit a post in a fence after

his car went airborne and in 2009, henry sterdes died after an f-2 race after being hit by a wheel from another car. wilson said in an interview and he and other drivers were always trying to make racing safer, but added it is a race car. we are racing hard and when it goes wrong it can get messy. >> by the way, at 6'4" he was the tallest guy on the circuit and his nickname was the gentle giant. >> i can't believe he got in that car. those guys are usually little guys. >> he grew up in england racing cars and since the age of 13 he has worked to p increase awareness about safety. there's a lot going on. we're going to bring on stuart varney to talk about what's happening with the markets

they are looking to do is draw attention away to clear victory at the border so they can get on to -- it's not even comprehensive immigration reform as we like to refer to because this president has no qualms about circumventing legislation. it may not be reform from legislation. >> what do you mean by tacit amnesty? does that mean the border patrol have told you that they are told to just turn a blind eye to some of the traffic coming through? >> god bless the men and women of the border patrol who resist that pressure from the white house. i.c.e. morale, another brother agency in the department of homeland security, which oversees deportations and removals of criminal nationals that are threats to this country and investigates interior crime such as the one that occurred in san francisco, they have been ordered by their leadership to look the other way.

felon segment. what did you say about that? >> he committed a bad crime, robbery with a firearm, stole $10,000 during that particular blaryg. we had arrested his buddy but not him, so he came on our facebook page. we have about 100,000 friends or so. and he taunted us. oh, they are really frustrated. they can't find me. >> he made comments about you looking for him? >> he absolutely did. he made comments about they are having trouble, the deputies are frustrated. they can't find me. here i am. well, we put a $500 bounty on his head and all those people who he thought were his friends much rather wanted the money and as a result that $500 went out and logan hale went to jail and now he has no money to post bail. >> and that's the poem you wrote after you caught him you went back on facebook and -- read the poem that you penned sheriff. >> sure. logan hale, you are on your way

the chief of police in detroit, michigan james craig says that legal gun ownership can help deter crime. seems the stats are proving the chief right n. 2014 the police department issued over 1100 handgun permits while 8100 guns were registered. as the gun registration grow, homicide, shootings, robberies, all going down. coincidence or something else? chief craig joins us live from detroit. chief, why did you feel you should go out and tell people in detroit they should pack heat? >> well, you know, it was based on a number of things. i had a lot of experience in other cities certainly. my time in maine was a pivotal part of me taking another look at effect of what good americans who are armed can have on

reducing violence. the state of maine has a model t way life should be. when i arrived in detroit in 2013. we had detroit 2012, a lot of homicides. 2300 permits issued in 2012. detroit was fed up. it was during that time they had little confidence in the police department. when i arrived a year later, certainly the men and women in the police department started working real hard. the community spoke out and said we've had enough. >> that's right. >> the permits. folks said when i'm faced with imminent threat to my life, i'm going to respond. criminals knew that. >> speaking to criminals knew that, tell us results of a survey they spoke to 1800 felons. number one thing felons were afraid of was can -- >> armed citizens. >> of course. >> this was a research

conducted. they said 57%, over half of those they interviewed, felons, said they were most fearful of armed citizen than they were of police. >> absolutely. >> so that's based on research. when we look at stats this year, while citizen shootings are down, over half. also, we're a safer city. over all crime is down 12% this year. >> chief, ultimately detroit is opposite of a gun-free zone. you don't know if the person you're about to rob is carrying pay gun legally. >> you don't know. i reported out right after -- what i found strange once appointed chief in detroit, the number of criminals checking to see whether or not a victim was armed. in fact, some criminals were
