firefighters, biggest one in the country. largest one in the world as well. they are super elite. they are putting me through the test and it is tough. >> you are elite. >> pete hegseth setting on the couch today and tomorrow by the way. if you like it today tune in tomorrow. >> great to be here. thanks for having me. >> are you kidding? >> a fox news alert,,ing overnight a suspected cop killer is in custody after allegedly gunning down a texas sheriff's deputy execution style while the deputy was filling up his patrol car with gas. >> so who turned the suspect in? turns out his mother. >> mr. fisher is live in d.c. with the details. kristen? >> good morning. this happened at a gas station just outside of houston. the deputy was in uniform. he was filling up his patrol car. he went inside the convenience store. when he he came out this gunman just walked up behind him and started shooting. the sheriff's office says it was totally unprovoked. once the deputy fell to the ground, this suspect continued firing.

47-year-old deputy darren goforth died almost instantly. he was a 10 year veteran of the harris county sheriff's department. >> it's horrifying. it's an act of cowardice and brutality the likes of which i havener seen. >> what you can imagine is a very difficult situation. we know that deputy goforth leaves behind a wife and two children. our hearts go out to them. >> the suspect fled the scene in a pickup truck but he was caught and taken into custody a little over an hour ago. get this, his mother apparently helped lead investigators to her son. of the big question now is motive. detectives are searching security camera footage for clues but so far they have very few leads. one possible lead is the fact that about 30 minutes before he was killed deputy goforth had had responded to a routine car accident he drove from there to that chevron station where the

shooting happened. looking to see if there is any possible connection but so far nothing. anna, pete, back to you. >> learn more about this suspect about his identity and if he in fact did this. this is really part of a larger trend here. this is not the first police officer to be executed in the line of duty in recent months it does seem to be accelerating. we have seen this happen in other times in american history. >> remember when it happened to the two new york city police officers when they were gunned down in a car? so awful. you say there is not a war on police. here is even more evidence this morning. >> absolutely. it's a national sentiment it feels like. if you are a police officer right now, doing your job. you watch the heated rhetoric. overheated rhetoric time and time again, you walk out on your job much like recruiters in those offices saying hey, we have a war on islamist. i can't defend myself. >> exactly right. we should be clear this

crime was committed by saying gel man. we shouldn't blame others for something that he did. on the other hand, crime has been politicized under this administration. when you politicize crime, you are basically i justifying it and it increases. that's one of the reasons you have seen a rise in our violent crime rate in cities across america. it's ominous. >> this sheriff's deputy leaves behind a wife and children. that sheriff harris county is asking for thoughts and prayers for that family and the department. let's listen to this. >> in what appears to be an unprovoked, execution style killing of a police officer strikes us all at the heart of public service. we will hunt this person down and do our best to bring that person to justice. clearly the deputy was the target. so, i would think the general public at large would take normal precautions.

the second one is sanctuary cities, in which cities around the country have adopted this defiant posture against federal immigration law. and that needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. >> well, sure. i mean you have seen all kinds of instances where cities defied -- i mean, you saw this in little rock in 19 a 6 where the cities defied federal law and the cities did something about it this is not happening under this administration. do people coming here know that there are sanctuary cities and know they will be treated leniently if they make it to chicago or san francisco? >> absolutely. in fact, during the interview process when border patrol agents do and ice agents do arrest illegal all yens, one of the questions asked where they were going. and most of them will say specific cities like chicago, denver, san francisco, because of the lax immigration law. and that is the tremendous problem when we have have issues like a couple months

some rain in towards south florida. we have another system cutting across the central part of the country bringing you rain showers this morning to chicago eventually towards detroit. not going to be severe. not going to be all that heavy. north going to ruin your day. just a quick shower moving through. take a look at this storm out across the west. a powerful fall-like storm moving across the pacific northwest bringing a lot of rain. we have been talking about fires there so long this is going to bring a lot of wind with it. we could see today some of those futures really whipping up but tomorrow we will see some of that moisture make its way to eastern parts of washington which is good news. we will get that also bring the cooler temperatures eventually. today, 97 in billings, it's very, very hot. tomorrow you begin a bit of a cool down there and will be very cool across the pacific northwest by the time we get to monday. we will see the heat build across the central part of the country and towards the east. we are headed towards the end of august. and we have very mid summer like temperatures coming for a lot of this coming up week. all right, guys. send it back to you inside. >> thanks a million, rick.

the harris county sheriff's department. >> it's horrifying. it's an act of coward disand brutality, the likes of which he i have never seen before. >> and what you can imagine is a very difficult situation, we know that deputy goforth leaves behind a wife and two children. our hearts go out to them. >> the suspect fled the scene in a pickup truck but according to our fox affiliate in houston. he was caught and taken into custody a short time ago. his mother apparently helped lead detectives right to him. so the big question now is motive. about 30 minutes before he was killed, deputy goforth had responded to a routine car accident. he drove from the scene to the gas station where the shooting happened. but is far detectives say they haven't been able to find any connection between the two incidents. according to the officer down memorial page website he is the 2 'rd law enforcement officer to be

moisture drops it quickly and you get rapid flooding. that's what we have been seeing across the dominican republic. across the island of item can the storm really disrupted by a lot of wind shear and dry air and all of the mountains here across the island of espanola. a lot of mountains across the eastern side there, water temperatures, however, very, very warm there this by chance threads its needle to the south and north of this, and it's difficult to say what it is going to do at this point at least in that kind of a small measure, we could still be seeing this maybe gathering a little bit more strength. one thing i do want to point out. we haven't talked that much about this. south florida in extreme drought. areas towards tampa seen a lot of flooding. south florida in a drought. they could get some rain. the track of this now at least at this point is going to track a little bit to the western side here and that could bring some more rain around the tampa area this

well, it's the most disturbing story you will probably hear all day. new video he from inside the memphis v.a. shows hospital workers leaving paralyzed veterans abandoned sometimes for hours at a time. >> this happens every day. no one is here to us. if something happened, we are screwed. front desk area, no one attending at all. >> joining us now with his reaction is the executive deputy director of paralyzed veterans. himself a former marine as well. sherman guilliams jr. thank you for joining us. >> good morning, pete. good to see you again. >> thank you. >> you spend your life advocating on behalf of paralyzed veterans. why does something like this happen? >> it speaks to a few concerns. number one, the reality is paralyzed veterans are living longer are. and when that -- with that comes the opportunity for v.a. to examine whether it needs to right size the way it staffs these hospitals, the way it staffs the spinal cord injury centers.

in this case we are looking at one example of where a veteran with needs, needed to have someone at the bedside a little bit more frequently than at times past. this happens at spinal cord injury centers across the country. trying to determine how we in fact need to right size the staffing at the v.a. americans. >> you mentioned the v.a. a couple of times. we asked the v.a. for a statement. they provided one. they said in response to this oftentimes when staff are working at the bedside with patients, it might appear that no one is at the nurse's station. the assistive call button is at the bedside for patient to alert staff if there is need for assistance. do you think, sherman, is this a memphis thing or v.a. system thing? there has been a lot of criticism of both this facility but also v.a. health care generally. which is it in this case? >> well, i think it's worth mentioning that this video was shot in july. since that time, we did advocate for the memphis leadership to make

adjustments and they did send in a new team of clinics to take a look at this problem. it's been in the works and getting resolved. but it is symptomatic of something that's been probably happening in v.a. far too long. and that's understaffing. and we heard deputy secretary sloan talk about managing to a budget instead of the requirement. i think at this point they are just now understanding that you have to manage to what's needed. take look at demand and determine what's needed and memphis, because it got this attention, i hope it will speak to the bigger, bigger solution. >> sherman, the video itself speaks for itself, obviously the need to take it, these veterans felt like they weren't being treated the way that they should. do you know if anyone has been held accountable here in memphis? do you think someone should be held accountable? we have heard about the difficulties of holding anybody accountable? can anybody be held

accountable for this? >> one of the things we need to keep in mind the v.a. is. most of them are doing the right thing. when you have these pockets of problems that are happening and they get this kind of attention, it is important to demonstrate accountability. i think that secretary robert mcdonald is doing that. he is he looking at thing from a veterans perspective. in this case the spinal cord injury chief was held accountable. >> held accountable in what sense? just real quick. >> right there. was an interim spinal cord chief that was relieved of duty. and there was a new interim chief brought in who has more experience and taking a look at the problem and developing solutions to function it. >> you got it sherman, thanks very much for joining us and what you do for veterans. >> you got it. >> do not mess with one pastor. wait until you hear how he stopped a man from robbing his church. and a dad gives a little boy a gust he really didn't want to teach him some manners. >> an avocados.

friends. ♪ ♪ >> good morning from new york city. we want to begin with a fox news alert. breaking just overnight. a suspected cop killer reportedly i is in custody this morning after he allegedly gunned down a sheriff's deputy execution style at a gas station just outside houston. >> the suspect walking up behind 47-year-old sheriff's deputy darren goforth and shooting him point blank. the suspect fled the scene in a pickup truck. according to fox affiliate in houston, texas, he was caught just a few hours ago. they say his mother is the one who possibly helped turn him in to police. the suspect has not yet been identified. >> well, the big question now is motive. detectives are searching security cameras and footage for clues. they are seeing if there is any connection to a car accident that deputy go domestic violence forth had responded to moments before. >> he had finished investigating an accident about 30 minutes before. so at this point we don't

know any connection between that event and the incident here. >> trying to connect a lot of dots. deputy goforth was a 10-year veteran of the harris county sheriff's department. he leaves behind a wife and two children. we're now joined by former d.c. detective rod wheeler who joins us over the phone. rod, thanks a lot for joining us. >> good morning, guys. >> well, rod, tell us -- you know, this is obviously an incredibly tragic situation. but it also, we have heard about a lot of these killings of those wearing the badge. what does this tell us about some of the threats our law enforcement are under in this country now? >> can i can tell that you law enforcement all across the country are under a severe attack. now, there has been -- i don't know if you know this, there has been about 22 shootings of police officers this year alone here in the united states. and what we saw happen last night down there in harris county was noting abouting a cold-blooded, call also a ambush against an innocent police officer who had done nothing wrong. this officer had just left the scene of an accident. so that was very innocuous

thing. they had nothing to do with this guy and this guy decides to walk up. i was just talking with some fellow police officers here in this morning here in cleveland where i'm at. me you know, rod, each and every day we go out there it's a lot different from how it used to be. we are always on alert. we just don't know if somebody is going to walk up to us, open fire on us and just try to kill us. >> those runs, rod, have got to effect the way that police do their job. >> it does. it really does. because what happens is we develop a mind set. we, meaning police, we develop a mind set that we are so worried about protecting our ownselves, sometimes, we still continue to do our jobs. but each and every call that you go on -- do you know what's going through your mind? is this going to be the call where we are going to be ambushed? we see this happening all across the country. it's really becoming a major, major problem. do you know what we don't see? we don't see it slowing down. we don't see it stopping any time soon. >> this suspect apparently leaving in a pickup truck

water and supplies flying off the shelves as people unbelievably so prepared for the worst. how worried should would he be? rick reichmuth tracking. rick? >> if you have been watching if these mountains tear the storm apart and if it doesn't survive, then it will be a weakening trend. there is hurricane hunter aircraft in there right now. the latest advisory comes out and they think it has dissipated or is dissipating. due to that interaction. so if you go to the maps here and take a look, this looks like a lot more. this is thunderstorm activity that is far outside the center. and they just moved the center of this storm here now to the north side of cuba. it was right here. it's just kind of this elongated, large circulation, not a very tight circulation like you are used to seeing with some tropical systems. the center of this suspect here. likely just dissipating as it will, still, that energy will pull off towards the northwest over very warm waters. but if at the lower level, at the surface, there isn't a circulation, then you don't get that continued strengthening.

it would take a lot of time over here in order for that to happen. so, some big changes here. hopefully we are seeing this dissipating completely. we will still see the moisture move in, but we won't see any kind of a tropical storm at the 11:00 advisory all of this stuff will get changed. and we will see if they even expect it to get back to a tropical storm status. so big changes right now at 11:00 we will see what the national hurricane center does. this is good news for florida. municipal court still coming but likely a much weaker, weaker storm. >> the season has begun. rick. appreciate it the trump train pulled into a station in massachusetts last night. the candidate fired up the crowd by taking shots at his opponents. and at cnn. watch this. >> this country doesn't have victories anymore. and they are going to see so many victories. they may get tired of winning that much. tired of winning that much. you are going to see so many victories if i'm elected president. >> jeb bush is a frequent target because when this

welcome back, he is on the federal notify -- no fly list. he could drive your kids to school. amir got his class a trucking license he wants to be a school bus driver in minnesota. how did this happen? how did he get a license to drive 18 wheelers? joining us now is kmsp investigative reporter who has been on this story from the beginning. thanks for joining us this morning. it almost seems like we got the facts wrong here. this is guy arrested for training with al qaeda in somalia. spent a time in jail in kenya. interrogated by fbi 30 times. can't fly airliner but truck a truck license. >> can't get a plane ticket but can drive 18 wheelers. he first came on our radar a year ago kicked out a couple mosques for radicalizing young people. young people who eventually left who try to go fight for isis in syria. so we began watching him. and last april we noticed

that he was training to get his commercial drivers license. we first noticed a little placard around him. traced him to a local trucking school. learned he was getting that license and assumed at some point the fbi would intervene and stop him from doing that well, in fact, the fbi served a subpoena on this trucking school the day after our story. no one intervened. would he discovered three weeks ago got this commercial drivers license to drive 18 wheelers. is he trying to get a separate endorsement that would allow him to drive school buses. we asked our department of public safety this guy can't get a plane ticket why are you allowing him to drive 18 wheelers? they told us there is nothing that they can see in federal or state law that would prevent them from granting him this class a commercial drivers license. he passed a criminal background check. he has a clean record. the fbi wouldn't comment for us. we reached out to his attorney with the aclu. he has a couple lawsuits going with the aclu to get off othe no fly list. his attorney said hey listen amir has a clean criminal

record. he is just trying to get a job. is he trying to support his family, including a young baby. when we did this story originally about amir trying to get this license in may, he gave us a statement, amir which he said he would never take an innocent life. of course that begs the question that what is an innocent life in his opinion. >> exactly. >> tucker are, this is the thing, according to letters we have from homeland security, they see him as a terror threat. who, and this is a quote has the operational capacity to carry out a terror attack. that is pretty chilling stuff. and this is the guy that he was just allowed to drive 18 wheelers. >> i would say i'm old enough to remember when minnesota didn't have problems like this before our immigration policy got in the way. it's worth reminding our viewers, i think, of the damage that a massive big truck like this can do. >> yeah. tucker, it's important to point out though, this guy is a u.s. citizen. he was born in this country. is of egyptian dissent. he actually came to minnesota from new jersey because he has family connections here. >> yeah, just for our viewers who are just

hi friends, good morning, it's a fox news alert. tragedy in texas. a sheriff's deputy is gunned down, execution style, while pumping gas in his patrol car. >> and this morning the suspect is believed to be in custody. >> there is a lot going on in this story. fox 26 reporter john donley is live in harris county, texas where this all happened. john, what do you know? >> >> we still have very much an active scene behind me the sheriff deputies have surrounded this house. we believe that is the suspect's house. that is the suspect's vehicle. this all started to unfold around 8:30 last night local time. a deputy named darron goforth 477 years old. a husband and father. he had just finished investigating a traffic accident and filling up his patrol car when the suspect approached him from behind, apparently without provocation and simply opened fire. the deputy fell to the ground. the suspect stood over him. firing repeatedly into his body. we spoke to the harris county district attorney. and she says this was absolutely an assassination.

sure wasn't in shock and stuff. and he was knocked out at first for the first few seconds and then but then he woke up and he was just in a lot of pain, and i got him the backpack and there was first aid kit inside. and he wrapped up his leg and his ankle and his arm. >> boy, it's a lot easier to talk about staying calm than it is to pull it off. people die in the woods all the time because they lose control of themselves. how did you keep yourself calm and what did you do for your dad over those two days? >> well, at first i was definitely freaking out but i just -- mostly the way i kept calm was i just thought about what would happen if i didn't keep calm and how that would make the situation a lot worse. >> i hear you prayed a lot as well. ultimately, your dad thought, all right, it might be a while until we see anybody. we are off the trail head right now. so he made a note for you to

woman. gabriella what does this tell us about hillary clinton. >> this reminds me of the 1980 election between carter and reagan. majority carter as weak. it had tremendous impact on his team. carter had said since is had he been a stronger president, perhaps he would have done better. when you look at hillary clinton, i think most americans are thinking had she been a more honest candidate from the get-go, perhaps she would be doing better. this is going to continue to impact her campaign, especially as this email scandal continues to deepen. >> i did some quick math and over 500 of the respond dents had a word that was like liar or dishonest for hillary clinton. now we go to jeb bush. they asked respond dents what comes to mind when you think of jeb bush. the first word that came to mind for a plurality was bush. then family, honest, weak, brother, dynasty and experience. what does it tell us about jeb bush and his chances. >> it tell us that jeb bush all of his efforts to distance himself from both his father and husband brother have obviously been

unsuccessful to this point. most americans continue to associate him with both of the former presidents. and that may not be be necessarily a bad thing because, as we have seen since president george w. bush left office, his favorability ratings have continued to climb. so, we should keep an eye out to see whether or not jeb bush is more open going forward to inviting his brother or perhaps his father to his campaign appearances and to his fundraising events or whether he continues to sell himself as an entirely different breed. >> interesting to think that bringing w on the trail would have some upside for it now we go to the donald. what do people think when they thought of donald trump, first words that came to mind were arrogant, blow hard, idiot, businessman, clown, honest, and ego. that's what people said first in this poll. what does this tell us about donald trump and his chances? >> i can't say that i'm surprised that most americans in this monthly indicated that donald trump is arrogant. his type of charisma and the confidence that he radiates is actually not unprecedented. we have seen two pretty

earlier in the show we saw ana go through parts of the training. we're going to see how she faced an actual father. >> several simulations. new york firefighterers facing those flames every single day. what about how they save people, including babies trapped inside a burning building? i learned it all at the fdny training academy. >> reporter: no one said it was easy being one of new york's bravest. it all starts with the fdny academy where recruits are tested, trained, and then tested again. >> certainly are the biggest fire department in the country. we like to say we're the best. we try to keep our standard as high as possible. >> reporter: at the start of the 18-week academy about 320 recruits begin. by the end, 285 to 290 graduate. that's about a 10% to 15% attrition rate. only the strong survive. i made my way through the fdny functional skills test. >> keep pulling. >> reporter: got hands on in the tract caltraining.

now it's time for my toughest task, facing a fire. recruits go through controlled burn scenarios with temperatures between 600 and 1,000 degrees. they wear these protective suits. it's going to be hot. it's to time. we have a 1 3/4-inch hose here, simulating a structure fire. now we're going to go put it out. so we're down on the ground, right. looks like the flames are coming from the bay. we've got to get this thing out. here we go. the flames may be out, but the heat is still on for the fdny. they train for multiple scenarios including searching for those who may still be stuck inside. >> the hose to put out the fire. when he ear going to change positions. we're going to make a left-hand turn to the left and a

states. guys, back to you. >> thanks a lot, will. all right. now to extreme weather. the national hurricane center saying erika is no longer a tropical storm. this comes after at least 20 people were killed on the small island of domnica. >> florida governor rick scott not taking any chances, issuing a state of emergency. >> where is this storm going? is it a threat to you? could it come to florida? rick reichmuth has been covering this from the first moments and has the latest. >> last hour we were saying that the mountains really disrupted it, dissipating. it's likely at 11:00 they'll stop issuing advisories. there will no longer be a track. ultimately the best news we could see for florida. this is moisture here even though it's dissipating. that doesn't mean there's not a lot of moisture associated with it and thunderstorms. it's the center of this or what has been a center is becoming very, very difficult to find and likely at the surface, at the low level of the atmosphere, there is no longer a circulation. that means it's no longer a

tropical storm. when that happens, even though the water temperatures are very warm ahead of this path, if there isn't a lower-level circulation it will not strengthen. i've had a lot of people message me on twitter saying but the water so warm, it's going to strengthen back. it will not strengthen in a considerable way, but it would take a lot of time over that water and a lot of thunderstorm activity for that to happen. we don't expect to see that happen. so this track that you're seeing right here from the national hurricane center that brings maybe a storm here will likely at least at this point not be happening any longer after the 11:00 advisory. doesn't mean that moisture isn't going someplace and it will start in florida starting tomorrow afternoon. we'll see pretty heavy showers there and maybe some spots see 3 to 5 inches of rain around the tampa area, which has seen a lot of flooding in the last month. not good news for them but overall a much better scenario heading into tomorrow and monday. >> folks in florida have been spooked. all the water has gone in a lot

the va, does it need to be fundamentally overhauled? >> i think it needs to be fundamentally overhauled. if you take my case, for example, i came forward as a whistle-blower because suicidal veterans were freely walking out of the hospital. i went to the news media, congress, the office of special counsel, and the day after i went to the news media the director held a secret meeting. his name is glen griffin. and proposed my termination when he was told we can't terminate him because he's protected as a whistle-blower, the council for the va said but we can come up with adverse employee actions. less than two weeks later i was removed under charges that i had threatened another employee. so we can use a lot of accountability at the va. >> they than, great point. a whistle-blower who stands up, seems the whistle-blowers are the only ones getting fired thee days. you said the va might need mountains of change. what kind of change is needed to overhaul it? >> i want to start off by saying we talk a lot about heros in the context of military and those who serve, but brandon who's

sitting here with us is a true the problems andut himself out the deficiencies where our veterans are not being served. as a vet, i appreciate that because if question ear not made aware of the problem, we can't begin to change them. at its core, i don't think anyone's been more critical of the veterans administration. but we are an incredibly indus roust people. we managed to put a man on the moon. we have built little missiles that can go in a window all the way around the world. we have it in our capacity to design system where we can design, screen, and treat our veterans. we need the same attention on caring for them that goes into making them. if we do, that we can fulfill our obligations to serve our veterans. what's happened is a disgrace. i disagree with dr. carson. you can't end it. you can't just say, well, we're just not going to honor our commitment. we have to fix it and we have the ability to do that. >> no disputing we want to honor our commitment, but this is a country that sent a man to the moon but can't get a health care

appointment for a veteran in a timely fashion. >> but we can. >> hold on. dr. carson is saying go to a va facility or a private provider if necessary. >> absolutely i support choices. as a disabled veteran i feel if the phoenix va is giving the level of service i earned by serving this country, i should be able to go to the phoenix va. if they're not giving topnotch service, i earn the right to go to a private provider. it makes the phoenix va step up their game. it's called competition. if the va improves their service, i can come back to them. if i don't feel they have improved their service, tiff right to get care where i choose to get care. >> nathan, what do you say about choice as a solution to these problems? >> i don't have a choice. if the choice is between a well-functioning va that we hold accountable -- but that's not what dr. carson proposed. what he proposed was a privatization, the fact we're going to give you a voucher or hsa and send you out into the street. i would say veterans have unique

circumstances. if you're someone who has not had your limbs ripped from your body from an ied, if you haven't had your bones crushed by a fully automatic weapon, if you don't suffer from posttraumatic stretch, you can get a voucher and roll down to walgreens and see a nurse. but if you're someone who who has, we need a detailed program fit for you not focused on profit, focused on care. i don't care if that's what routine care, if there's a better way to do that, i don't have a problem with that option. a lot of what's being proposed the do away with the va and kick everyone out. i don't support that. >> dr. carson did talk about making sure specialized services are provided. two marines still fighting for their country, thanks for joining me. >> thanks for having us. a boy scout keeps his dad alive in the wilderness for two days after he gets hit by a boulder the size of a refrigerator. you'll hear from that teen just ahead.

from south of the border and everywhere. using her term, undocumented immigrants only confuses the issue. nobody said in the vietnam war that a draft-dodger was an undocumented soldier, for example. >> the contortions are endless. one more professor. we skip those two, we're in the clear with john streamas and his class introduction to multicultural literature. you have to defer to the experience of people in color and reflect on your own social location and privileges and power. the punishment if you don't is removal from class. is this white privilege in classroom form? >> absolutely white privilege in classroom form. the problem is when you're engaging in controversial material that these courses cover, even if you want to honestly question or want to learn, you always run the risk of offending a fellow classmate, especially if you are expected to defer to the experiences of nonwhite students. of course there are consequences if you're not respectful in that course. >> sterling beard, thanks for
