unprovoked. >> this happened at a gas station outside of houston. once the deputy fell to the ground after the initial shots the suspect allegedly stood over him and continued firing. the deputy died almost instantly. he leaves behind a wife and two young children. the suspect will be arraigned monday. this is the 4th officer to be shot in the line of duty there year alone. >> we appreciate the update. kristin fisher from washington. this set off a fire storm not just grieving the family and friends of this man but why did this happen? here's ron hickman, the sheriff there, giving his view of how this occurred. >> some of the dangerous national rhetoric that's out there today. our system of justice absolutely requires law enforcement be present to protect our

community. at any point when the rhetoric ramps up to point calculated cold blooded association of police officers happens, this rhetoric is out of control. we've heard black lives matter, all lives matter. cops lives matter. let's drop the qualifier and say lives matter. >> they absolutely do. somehow at the state fair in minnesota in st. paul, a branch of black lives matter group was chanting something terribly disgusting. listen to this. >> fry like bacon, pigs in a blanket. this is hours after this innocent deputy was gunned down in cold blood. >> they're not talking about deny's breakfast. they're talking about murdering

police officers. >> they were trying to raise awareness supposedly. this isn't raising awareness. this is stoking fears and hatred. this movement evolved to fear and hate mongering in so many places. instead we're talk about killing cops. >> that's what you're saying is so so important. there's a section of the black lives matter movement that feels they have grievances to express. this is not it. there's so many in the silent minority not getting as much attention needs to speak out against these groups saying disgusting things. >> this group is promoting violenceed up to them again and again. where does this lead? the sheriff thinks this has

created this this type environment. >> i'm not going to stick my head in the sand about it. i said last december war was declared on american police officer led by high profile people. one coming out of the white house, one the united states department of justice. it's open season now. there's no doubt about it. any time a law enforcement officer killed, a little of every police officer in america dies along with them. >> he mentioned president obama. it will be interesting to see what kind of rhetoric comes out of the white house, how they respond, do they respond? do they give it at the time attention they should that so many others got. >> they spent the second term picking at scab i would say, encouraging people to feel grieved. using grievances for political benefit. it's the work of one man, one lunatic who appears to be in jail now. i think rhetoric does matter.

representing the police officers. i've known devon for years. she's a tough cookie and very smart lady. this has been going on for a while. there seems to be a turn in the community towards the hostility with police officers and their feeling. see it from the comments they're making on the website to personal conversations with them where they walk around scratching their heads going, what did i do? i signed up to help people. the interaction with citizens are changing on a daily basis. seeing people run from police officers when they would have cooperated otherwise. see the escalation of tension. a lot is break down of society. >> you say you've seen a real change in people's attitude toward police. do you hold responsible politicians who weighed in on police brutality cases? >> absolutely. the comments they're making are

that year, i bought a book for each student in the class called how good is good enough since no one is perfect. i left them on the table. i said take one if you want or not. it didn't matter to me. so the students took one. two weeks later, i got a call from one of the students in the class who was interested in having his grade raised. if i didn't do it, he would go to deen about the book i gave him. at that point, i ignored it and let it go. then two weeks later, i got a warning letter from the dean saying i allowed kids to take a decidingly christian book and it could not happen again or i would be terminated. >> if it had been atheist book or promoting other things, you would have been fine. >> that's probably true.

cameras? >> absolutely. you want to know who's walking in and out of that door. deliveries, mail people, anybody who's coming in or out. >> the most nerve racking part of being a young parent is putting the infant to sleep. obviously something personal for you. what should you ask about sleep rules at a facility? how do you have the interaction and making sure they care for a newborn? >> it's not asking. educating daycare providers back to sleep. there should be nothing in the crib. no blan kkeblankets, stuffed an. should not be a couch or anywhere else. just a crib with a mattress. >> is it a type of daycare provider you look for. what's your preference across the spectrum? >> have a good relationship with

it's a brilliant simple tool for someone who works inside dangerous zones or if you find yourself in a hurricane katrina kind of scenario where you are battling your way out of the city. >> this is based on technology that they actually used with their oxygen tanks. if your oxygen tank doesn't rattle for a little while there's a sensor in there that will make it go beep, beep, beep, so the other firefighters will know my man might be down next to me. >> with this app, you can be a firefighter and you are making this decision on your own. >> what about finding somebody to give cpr? there's an app for that? . >> this is interesting. this is brilliant. you can find out who can give you cpr nearby and also where an aev device is, and you can sign up and say i'm trained in cpr

and i'm willing to come to someone's aid, the moment you call 911, the ambulance is on the way, you activate this app and hey 20 feet away is someone who knows cpr and it activates to them saying hey you are needed. >> seconds matter. the need with this is for other people to download the app so that they can be a part of it and come to the aid if they know cpr. >> also different cities are implementing this to be part of their plan for city emergencies. it brings a lot of awareness to it. what about emergency chat? >> i love this. emergency chat is something everybody should download. i believe it's still free. these things always change, but this thing is brilliant in that you activate emergency chat. you hand your phone to someone. let me just hand it to you, and i'll show you what happened. now, emergencies strike, they happen instantly. you don't know what's necessarily going to happen.

and the deputy did not each other. it appears he was targeted simply because he was wearing adown form. the man accused of killing him is 30-year-old shannon jay miles, he is in custody charge with accidental murder. he does have a criminal history. he's been convicted of resisting arrest and nothing explains why he shot him point blank. as the deputy was dying on the ground, miles stood over him and kept on firing. he died at the scene. >> our assumption is that he was a tarring because he wore a uniform. at this point we found no other motive or indication that it was anything other than that. >> deputy goforth is the 23rd law enforcement officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty. he was 47 years old. he's been with the sheriffs office for ten years. he leads behind a wife and two

children. >> you heard her say it, this was the 23rd murder of this kind this year. at some point you have to declare that a trend. >> absolutely. rhetoric has consequences and now they have got to move to also the prosecution phase of this. and one of those involved is devon anderson. >> it is time for the silent majority in this country to support law enforcement. there are a few bad apples in every profession. that does not mean that there should be open warfare declared on law enforcement. the vast majority of officers are there to do the right thing, are there because they care about their community and want to make it a safer place. what happened last night is an assault on the very fabric of society. it is not anything that we can tolerate. it is time to come forward and

still at the top of the list of republicans hoping to be the candidate. he's got 23% of the vote. behind him is dr. ben carson, joining us to react is mike huckabee. great to see you. >> good morning, tucker. >> i cannot resist asking you about this. you saw chris christie say that we should somehow track illegal immigrants in our country in the same way that fedex tracks its packages. says he's going to bring fred smith in to do that if he's president. this is an idea i think i heard you come out some years ago. if that's right, tell us what that means exactly, what is the idea? >> well, back in 2007, when we were talking about illegal immigration even back then, i just made the point, fedex can track a package from the moment it leaves the warehouse until it gets to its door. they can tell you exactly where it is. if they are so good at this and we say we don't know where these

11 million people are, let's just turn the whole thing over to fedex. newt gingrich said it four years later in his presidential race and i guess somebody is picking it up. it's great to be quoted. it's great to be copied. i would appreciate a little attribu attribute. along the way. >> where does the bar code go? >> the devil is in the details. the point is if a private company can track something as simple as a watch battery being sent across the country to say the federal government with all of its resources has no clue how to keep up with the people who come into our borders and live within our country, it's lewd krous to say the federal government can't do it. if they really were serious about wanting to know who was coming in, we secure the border, you know who is coming in, and then you have some method of having them check in, maybe it's an app on the phone, but the point being it's leudicrous to

say our federal government has no idea how to deal with illegal immigration. >> absolutely. they need to get serious about it and securing the border. let's talk about those polls because the numbers do show that donald trump is still at the top in iowa. ben carson within striking distance. what do you make of these numbers? are americans just fed up with politicians? >> absolutely. i think we're seeing it in the polls. it's almost that what used to be a virtue, what used to be something that was a qualification saying i've done this job before, i could do this job, now it's almost like it's the one thing they don't want. i think people are so angry, look i see it on the campaign trail. people aren't just mad. they are in a seething rage and right now there is such anger that i don't think they are thinking about when you elect someone to be president, you are really electing them to do something that may have simple

principles but it's very complex. this is, you know, a remarkable time in american politics with the anger of the electorate and who can blame the people for being ticked off? i'm ticked off. >> hillary clinton compared republicans to terrorists and recently she talked about immigration, comparing it to boxcars. your quick reaction. >> well, hillary called me out by name a few weeks ago for referencing iran's deal on the holocaust and now she seems to be doing this. i'm just waiting for someone to come out and to -- in fact, hillary could maybe call herself out for invoking this language. if she wants to talk about immigration, she has a plan, the plan is she emails an immigrant and they just disappear. >> governor mike huckabee, joining us from the road. great to see you. >> good to see you guys. sthrs a lot more coming up in two minutes.

down a texas sheriff deputy execution style. >> the suspect's name is shannon miles. he's 30 years old. kristin fisher is live in washington, d.c. with more. >> reporter: good morning. the harris county sheriff is calling this an unprovoked cold-blooded execution. he believes his deputy was targeted simply by wearing a uniform. he is behind bars this morning charged with capital murder. he had previously been convicted of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct with a firearm. so far nothing in his past explains why he walked up to the deputy while he was pumping gas in his patrol car and ambushed him. shot him in the back and continued firing after he had fallen ground. he died at the scene. last night hundreds of people showed up at the same gas station. look at that crowd. right outside of houston to pay tribute to the deputy.

>> all i can say is he was a genuine guy. good guy. good husband, good father. and i'm really going to miss him. i think this community is going to miss a very good officer. and we need for the community to understand that most of us out here are here to help. we're here -- we really are out here to do good. >> deputy is the 23rd law enforcement officer to be shot dead this year in the line of duty. he leaves behind a wife and two young children. as for the suspect, miles, he'll be arraigned in court on monday. the sheriff said they did a ballistics test on a handgun belonging to miles, and it's a match. >> kristen fisher is joining us live in washington with that update. thanks a lot, kristen. why don't we just drop the qualifier and say lives matter? >> a question some are asking.

rhetoric towards officers, you'll see a decrease in people who want to become officers. we already have a shortage. it's going to get worse and worse as less people step up to the plate to become ufofficers. >> how are you treated in your community? >> i'm saddened and upset about the rhetoric going on in the nation right now. we need to come together. i don't like the way our nation is headed. as of right now, as law enforcement officers, we will not be backed down about the rhetoric doing going on. we're going to continually support our community and uphold the law. >> i want to get your perspective as an african-american police officer. with the black lives matter group, it seems like there are some very -- there are people groups, flying under the banner, and there are also these groups

that are saying things like fry like bacon and pigs in a blanket and saying jus nasty, terrible, hurtful things. how important is it, do you think, that people, african-americans and african-american police officers step up and denounce that behavior? >> it's very important. i don't experience any hatred or rhetoric out there on my department. my community. i love. they love me. we're going to continue to pull forward. black lives matter, i understand some of the things that have been going on in america with certain officers. but that doesn't depict on any of the officers as a whole. and we're going to continue to move forward. >> chief jones, obviously you showed the photo on the screen right now, that race doesn't matter in how you do your job. do you feel like interacting with the community, because of the black lives matter movement specifically, do you feel like you're treated differently? is there a different

relationship between you and that community that is inhibiting your community on a day-to-day basis with human beings to do your jobs. >> the culture that we have in trinity, i don't believe so. and with the black community that we have, we have such a strong, independent, hard working community at trinity. and we have no problems with police department and the black community. i do fear that this kind of rhetoric is going to start causing us problems. and we've always been able to resolve them. and aumpss who haven't done anything but done their job and done what they're supposed to do, there's no talking. there's no way to talk with somebody who their only course of action is the violence. and with the murder of the police officers as we showed

earlier in the show. that with every person running for the presidential nomination, should those politicians be meeting with a group like that? >> you know, it's difficult because i've had interact with people discussing about the group. some say, of course, we're a peaceful group. we want to be peaceful. we want to be this. if that is the case, then you have to denounce and step up and tell these people that are being the agitators or tell the people being violent they're not a part of you, they're not representative, they're not welcome. and i don't think they're going to step up and tell those peemt that stuff. until they do so, no, i don't believe they should have a voice. until they can decide which direction they want their movement or group to go, then they don't need a voice. >> people calling for murder don't represent a legitimate political movement. >> we can all agree on that. >> gentlemen, thanks for coming on this morning. >> thank you.

about it. and she used to be up over 50%. she's now at 37%. which means a majority of caucusgoers, and they obviously all know her, are now saying they wouldn't vote for her. that's got to be concerning. you have to figure alarm bells went off as soon as the polls came out for joe biden. hey, he might be able to win this thing. >> what is the likelihood of biden getting in? if you had to bet on today today, what's the odds? >> i don't know. if i was that good at betting, i would quit this job and go to vegas. i don't know. on one hand i know he wants to be president. i know he thinks he would be a good president. do you want to go out a loser? >> in addition to that is the personal factor which you can't overstate. he's still sufferg from the tragic loss of his son beau. he was on a call with donors

this week and he said i got to go into this with my whole heart and soul and they're both banged up now. >> chris, onto the republican side of the ledger, the des moines register poll had a lot of folks going up and a lot of folks going down. one of those going down was governor jeb bush dropped down a few points as ben carson and donald trump continued to stay strong. he also lost three fund-raisers recently. what do you make of him losing fund-raisers? >> i don't know the inner workings. they're not going to work for the campaign or the superer pac. but it doesn't sound good. and he's now down to 6%. this is the man everybody thought would be the the front-runner for the nomination. now at 6% in iowa, trump is at 23%, i believe it is. carson is at 18%. he's doing badly. but frankly so are all of the governors and senators, the career politicians. i mean, more than 40% of iowa

suburb. it was covered in red hand prints and smears. the owner decorated it as a joke for the annual festival in the nevada desert, but parents don't find that funny. >> it felt like they were trying to track kids. >> it looked too fake to be true. but i didn't want to get a closer look, for sure. >> the owner said he was visiting a friend in the neighborhood and has not come back. a missing hiker, a woman saved after spending some nine days stranded in the wilderness. search teams finally located the 62-year-old, more than a week after she got separated from her hiking group in the sierra nevada mountains. the rescue operations was hampered by smoke. search crews amazed at her ability to survive. >> she had a water filter with her. she basically crawled from where she was injured down to a creek.

that the shooter and the deputy did not know each other and he was targeted simply because he was wearing a uniform. shannon jay miles is behind bars charged with capital murder. in the pags he was convicted of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct with a firearm. but nothing explains why he walked up to the the deputy and shot him point-blank. as the deputy was dying on the ground, miles stood over him and kept on firing. he died at the scene. >> our asujs is he was a target because he wore a uniform. at this moment we found no other motive or indication it was anything other than that. >> last night hundreds of people showed up at the scene of the crime, a gas station outside of houston. he was 47 years old. he was with the sheriff office for ten years. he now leaves behind a wife and two young children.

he's the 23rd law enforcement officer to be shot and killd this year in the line of duty. sixth this month alone. very scary statistics. >> we are honored be joined by our friend dana perino. this is a trend, obviously. and without drawing too many conclusions, we want to be responsible. but it seems like the national conversation may be creating an environment with the stuff to become more common. >> and it's happening on a couple of different levels. one that we know about, we see hillary clinton or bernie sanders or martin oh mally. that makes news. you and i would all see. our viewers would watch. the other thing happening we don't know as much about is the social media push on black lives matter, and that is actually more powerful. it is happening at a level that

law enforcement has a hard time getting their arms around. and it's very real leadership, i would argue, that the white house needs to weigh in on this. and i think they should do it soon. >> your words are slr to what the sheriff is saying. how it's affecting police and how they do their job. >> some of the the dangerous national rhetoric that's out there today, our system of justice absolutely requires law enforcement be present to protect our community. ch so at any point where it ramps up to the point where calculated, cold-blooded assassination of police officers happen, this rhetoric has gotten out of control. we've heard black lives matter, all lives matter. cops' lives matter, too. >> that would be nice if that would catch on. . you're talking about how strong social media is. i think that's why a big segment of the population still thinks hands up, don't shoot still

happened. but it didn't. how powerful is it? and your background for being a press secretary for the white house, what does the press need to do on social media? >> i think they would get ahead of it. they did a whole social media thing about the iran deal and the movie "straight outta compton." it was preposterous and ridiculous. it's not going to help them. i think they're going to get votes anyway. they're good at social media. and also we know that black america will listen to president obama. all of us will listen to president obama. but there needs to be a very strong message. and he has done it in the past. but i think at this point when it becomes this egregious and this concerning for law enforcement all across the country, this guy was shot in cold blood from behind, and we all know that 99.9% of cops, they become cop ps because they want to help people and they're trying to help everybody. ch. >> but you really thing in the midst of a presidential campaign when the democratic party needs

to get this. this kind of rhetoric would be turned down? >> that's the danger. >> it is. >> but that's what leadership is for. and if you can't find democratic leaders willing to stand up and say something that might offend a big segment of who they think needs to turn out to vote, i don't think they should be president. >> speaking of the 2016 presidential race. there's a new poll from iowa. >> i'm only laughing because yesterday i heard on friday that this big poll was coming out at 5:00 p.m. on saturday. at 4:30 i'm waiting. oh, wait. it's 5:00 p.m. central time. i had to wait an extra hour. >> dana is on it, waiting for the polls. >> bernie sanders is gaining ground. hillary clinton is losing ground. the campaign has been broken up for a while.

but is this poll making the vice president? >> hillary clinton and bill clinton paid $100,000 for a rental in the hamptons in august. and she has to leave to go on campaign stops because her campaign is not doing well enough. she was in iowa, she went to minnesota. that meant that she is not comfortable enough in the hamptons for august. she has to get back out on the road. and still she slips. one thing i would point out. in 2008 when she was running against a few others. she was at about 29%. that's about the approval in the votes she got in iowa. eight years later with conceivably no competition, kpebt for a socialist, she's at 9:00%. so i think, yeah, they have problems in iowa. >> >> maybe when she introdiscusses herself and tells us where she's from. >> you know what has been

i think it's because he's come. >> i agree with that. >> when something goes up, someone else has to go down. we've seen them go up in the recent poll. but governor walker, busgoverno bush, governor huckabee have seen steep declines. how would they bring the numbers back up? >> i think some of the campaigns would argue they're probably seeing better numbers. i think governor huckabee would say that. just this past week, they announced key staff hires in washington. there's no doubt son-in-law of the candidates are dealing with the fact that we have a national primary. >> usually the primary, you have it in iowa. you go to new hampshire and south carolina. because of the way the media works and social media. that's making a huge difference in the campaign in iowa this year. i would say the candidates who didn't do as well yesterday are looking at this saying i've got work to do. some of them have a lot of work

to do. when people start getting back from vacations and get back to school and work after labor day. that's when they have to lock it down. he's talking about his plan to track illegal immigrants the way fed extracks packages. >> when your time is up. three months, six months, nine months, 12 months, then we go get you. excuse me. thanks for coming. time to go. >> will it work? >> well, i think -- i've talked to other folks today. i think it got disstorted. it sounds like you would put a chip in somebody's ear or a bar code, and that's how you would track them down. i think he's trying to say technology can do a lot of things and help improve our system. he's going to be on fox news

thank you for being with us. >> chase got a haircut. he's looking good this morning. >> first when disaster strikes, what do we need to know to keep our pets safe? >> you mentioned how many people and animals were affected by hurricane katrina. we want to avoid the problems. it could take simple and easy and effective tests to prepare yourself. one in three people are not prepared. they don't know what they would do in the case of emergency. i want to run through the things today. >> perfect. number one. >> number one is the collar. you want to make sure they have a collar with the i.d. tag and contact information on the back. you also want to make sure the pet is micro chipped. you really want both. an animal collar can fall off and not everybody will know they are micro chipped. >> it's really not that expensive, is it? >> not at all. very, very easy to do. >> this isn't a problem for most of us. keep current photographs of your animals on your phone.

i probably take ten pictures of my dog baxter every day. >> absolutely. and we have a cell phone app that allows you to keep your photograph, veterinary information, micro information that's very helpful if they have to be p on the go and keep those things with you. >> and we ought to have stickers on the windows. any kind of emergency, there are animals inside. >> absolutely. let them know how many animals are there. what's really important is when you leave your home, please remove the stickers. we don't want first responders to use the valuable time and risk their lives. >> we need to know pet friendly shemters around us. >> absolutely. want all that information. pet friendly hotel. also some friends to take your animal for you if you need to. if you micro chip your pet. keep the information updated. if you move, that's not updated. it's useless in helping you

reconnect. >> and we talk about your hurricane survival kit. we need to think about our pet food and their medication, too. >> absolutely. absolutely. so this is an example of a go kit. and you really want to have what i call a go mentality. what can you keep together and move, you know, in short notice? and by the way, you need to know where you're going, what your evacuation plan is. so i have a lot of pets at my house. >> you're a cat man, huh? >> very proud. and i need to make sure during a disaster i'm not looking for carriers. i'm taking them out of a closet or basement or attic. i keep them accessible. this go kit needs food and water. you need to keep in mind, where am i going to put the food and water? you need bowls. they need collapsible and water proof bowls that are very useful. >> joel, thank you so much. and thank you for all you've done in the wake of disasters, like hurricane katrina. aspca. you do a lot. >> appreciate it. >> here's what's coming up on

we'll let you know if something like that does happen. across the pacific northwest, we're looking at rain showers and some of that is certainly beneficial for the fires we've been seeing up there. cooler temperatures behind the front today and tomorrow. warm temperatures again all across the plains. all right. so if you are at home, a lot of people have gone back to school. it's back to school time. and here on fox & friends, we decided maybe you parents are having trouble trying to get back in the morning routine. we're giving kids a crash course of trying to get into the swing of things. we have a group of fourth through sixth graders joining us. we'll get them through a back to school obstacle course. are you ready? >> yeah. >> i'm going to explain as they're going. first thing you have to do is make a sandwich. this is so kids can make a sandwich on your own. you don't need your parents to make your sandwich? >> okay. >> you just said no, you are making your own sandwiches. on your mark, get set, go. all right. so the kids are making the

sandwiches because they can do it all on the own. this is going to save them all kind of time. they are making a turkey and cheese sandwich. a nice, healthy lunch. they have an apple. they have a juice box in there. but then they have to get their homework. so they're going to pick up homework inside the schoolhouse. and then they're going to put that into the the backpack, doing this all on their own. we have a clear leader here. then they're going to this ride their bikes to school through the obstacle course. oh, man. we have a leader here. i think these bikes are too small for actual riding the tricycle with their feet. all right. you are almost to school. oh! and then they have to put the bag into the locker. and get to their desk. the winner. very nice. you said you were going to be the winner.

he wants to hold hedge mund managers. that suggests to me he means eliminating loopholes like the ones hedge funds have where they are able to treat earnings a fz they're capital gains. they get charged 20%, versus ordinary income. >> half the rate. >> half the rate. >> pretty good deal. >> and he's a politician who says he can't be baulgt and sold. a lot of these are the type that would be donating to campaigns, right? >> for sure. this is a big group of the population that's right now endorsing hillary. a lot of hedge fund managers are endorsing hillary. many are endorsing jeb bush. he is talking to the people not on his team, if you will. >> i know he hasn't rolled it out completely. he's planning to. is he saying it would increase revenue? revenue neutral? >> well, that's the question. that's why we need more on this.

you have to ask yourself, if you're going to cut taxes for everyone and level the playing field out, where does the revenue come from? and what do you need the money for? he's aggressive as in other. he said basically, he told msnbc, i'm the king of the tax code. he was promising that. >> the the republicans are pro-market party. when he goes after the hedge fund guys, i hear republicans chearing. i'm amazing. >> i think everybody agrees on both sides of the aisle here. the tax treatment, as treating income as capital gains at 20% is not fair. so i think that is something that sort of resonates with a big portion of the people. >> for sure. absolutely. it's a poplar theme. you should treat people fairly and simple. >> he would say pay your fair

they've had the name since the 1930s. revolution continues. feeling the pain at the pump but waiting until the last minute could cause even more pain for your wallet. a brand new survey found that every year 827,000 people ignore the car warning light. you know who you are. you see that red light. when you're running out of fuel. >> that's a big never. our next guest says the best way to avoid this and avoid extra costs is by never going around town with less than 1/4 tank of gas. lauren is a car coach and she joins us now. good morning. >> good morning. >> thanks for being with us. >> good to be back. >> what kind of damage can we do to our car if we go all the way to empty? >> first thing you'll do is pick up all the sediment in the bottom of the tank. if you have a good bottle of red wine, there's sed im. some of the tanks are plastic.

some are metal. you have rust involved, too. you have moisture. what happens is you'll burn out a fuel pump. this is a fuel pump from a late model car. the fuel gets picked up from here in the tank. it's in the bottom of the tank. can you burn out this pump. >> pricey. >> $1500. if you have a direct injection engine, you have everything under here that goes bad. all of these rails and pipe, you're getting freakishly. >> direct injectors, fuel line. >> straight to your wallet. modern cars have the red light warning. they tell you how many miles you have left. can't we rely on that? if i know how far i am from the gags station you can make it? >> running it down to empty isn't good no matter what. you can shorten the life of very expensive components. engines aren't what they used to be, no big deal, change a fuel pump. the other thing to keep in mind is it has to do with your driving style and fuel economy. it's only a gauge not precise to say you have five miles till empty. you should never run your

vehicle down that low. the car care council doesn't recommend it either. >> i remember a fuel times when i was 15, 17 years old. i was using pennies to put in the gas tank. you could never do it now. >> you wouldn't even get a gallon. >> i remember a few times coasting in neutral because i heard that was going to get me to the gas station. also, turning off the ignition at a stop light. you said that's a bad idea. why? >> remember the gm ignition switches where people were having accidents and deaths. when your car is in the off position there is no passive safety. airbags. all that collision warning is off. the car considers itself parked. never shut your car off when you're waiting at a light. a lot of hyper milers do it. it is not safe. >> been on a lot of road trips myself. fathers are associated with it assuming they can go farther. is there a difference between what men and women do? >> women tend to be safety conscious. we're getting close to 1/4. we'll stop here, use the restroom, move on. men are like, no, i can make it right to the end.
