special interest group in this country under the sun. it seems like we could accommodate the beliefs of conservative christians. >> part of the difference, i suppose, between kim davis and martin luther king is the reception that she has received. king was lionized correctly as a hero. a moral leader by the people who run this country write newspaper columns. davis has been dismissed as a crank as she was led away to prison. protesters chanted love one as if her imprisonment were an expression of love. she is not a popular figure. >> she is not. i'm glad that our forefathers didn't resign themselves to the status quo. people say why doesn't kim davis simply resign? and that's certainly one option. but think about it. if our forefathers had not been willing to defy government authority, there would have been no american revolution, abolition of slavery or civil rights movement. our forefathers were willing to stand up for what they thought was right as well as their rights. even when that stand wasn't

it's about trendy sort of masculinity. ender stuties. sort of thing we see every day at the leadership institute campus for reform. west virginia announced it was hiring wikipedia to contribute no articles to the website about west virginiaian women as well as dealing with general temperature studies. the sort of trendy gender studies field that you are seeing at american universities these days. >> hypocritical? trend at universities across the country white wash gender. there are no differences between men and women at all? >> that certainly seems to be a lot of the case. you know, it goes back to that statement that the university issued saying that men were not taught properly that or had not been taught that emotional vulnerability and cooperation were key parts of human traits. but, you know, played football growing up in high school. you was taught a lot about cooperation. you don't succeed in certain endeavors if you don't cooperate. >> absolutely and team work. >> sterling, great to see you this morning. i'm glad we didn't have to

send. >> i wouldn't call a solution. dozens of apps out there that have this sort of regret button that allows to you delete something you have already sent. the problem with most of them is that the other person has to have it too. >> has to have the same app.? >> exactly. >> for apps like text strings and invisible and wiper. the person that is receiving it has to download it also. >> you have to agree before you send it that there might be a possibility that maybe you are going to want to delete something. >> why would anybody agree? it's like i may send you text that's so interesting that i don't want you to see it you have to agree that you won't look? are you kidding? >> yeah. i mean, i don't use any of these apps. >> are there other reasons for having these apps kind of like what's app.? you can internationally text for free? that's why people would use that are there other reasons besides taking back what you have already sent? >> there is a lot of data and privacy issues around them. some have private calling and things that the nsa can't listen on and things where the -- you know, the app. doesn't store your data for advertisers and things

like that. they all sort of have different positioning in that sense. >> google made some news when they did this 30 second, was it a third second recall on g mail? explain this one. >> functionality you can enable on g mail where it gives you 10 or 20 or 30 seconds to think twice about a message you have sent. if it's longer than 30 seconds, you are out of luck. microsoft outlook has a similar thing if you are sending messages on the same outlook server. >> how about facebook, twitter, instagram, whether it's a naked selfie or a teach poo. maybe you missed spell which can or something. what happens on those. can you delete them? >> the nice thing about social apps you can delete or modify anything you have put out there. not nice thing instead of sending to one person, you have sent it to everybody that you are following. there is that many more people who had a chance to see it and maybe screen shot it before you have gotten a chance to delete it. >> that doesn't seem to work too well i have noticed. >> certainly not for people in the public eye.

jane hampton cook. welcome to the show. >> thanks for having me. >> this is an interesting time. there is so much distaste and disdain for washington right now maybe we could see a political outsider. but we don't have any war hero presidents right now or candidates route now. but we have a long history in this country of electing war hero presidents, don't we? >> we do. we have had four and a half instances in northwestern history where we have elected a political outsider. someone with no elected experience. three of those times were war heroes, zachery taylor won the mexican american war. grant general grant won the civil war. and then dwight eisenhower, of course, won world war ii. all of those generals went on to become president without ever being elected to anything before and zachery taylor said that he hadn't even voted in an election before he was president. we don't have anyone in the race right now with those types of credentials, military time credentials. >> we do have some business experience. >> right. >> you brought up the

president, i think it's interesting, herbert hoover. tell us about herbert hoover. >> he was a millionaire, businessman, engineer, had a mining company. and in world war i, he started distributing food and won international claim and prominence. commerce secretary in the 1920s and became president in 1928. he had never been elected to anything before. i think that's fascinating we elected a millionaire back then to become president. >> what about chester arthur? >> he is my half. my indirect president that didn't have any politically experience. arthur was the head of the new york port authority. he was an appointed position at that point. but he was a new yorker. and so they put him on the ticket as the vp in 1880. and then president james garfield, who had been a congressman was assassinated and arthur became president. it was undirect way in some ways to the presidency without any political elected experience. >> some of them had been appointed as you point out.

>> yes. >> none of them had been elected if this happens in 2016 this would be presidential history in the making. none of them have been appointed to anything. >> absolutely. so you have -- this would be a very historic election if we elected a political outsider. but i also think it speaks to america and who we are. we traded royalty for representation and that anyone can rise in a leadership position and prove themselves worthy of, you know, taking that oath of office. so it's going to be a very interesting election to see kind of, you know, what ends up surfacing to the top. is it the outsider or the insider that says, hey, i really am the most experienced as a governor or a senator. >> it is fascinating. we have often elected governors in this country. it seems to be a shift right now happening. it's interesting. jane hampton cook we appreciate you joining us this morning. we appreciate it. >> thanks, clayton. >> thanks. coming up here on the show. this labor day, those serving the nation got

joining us now to help us is author of the ac diet and nutritionist karen gilbert. thanks for being with us. >> good morning. >> i think you are going to save us a lot of money. we are throwing out food unnecessarily. >> very unnecessarily. average an average american throws out ''6 pounds a food a month. a lot of it unnecessary. and we are wasting our money, also. it's really important. >> some of these that don't last for quite as long. >> it's very important to know that the expiration date on these foods are completely arbitrary. there is no legal guidance in these dates except for infant formula. they are kind of dates picked by the manufacture for peek quality of their products. it's not about spoilage it's about quality. >> you say toss after four to five days? >> deli meats. once you slice three to four days use it so don't buy three pounds at the grocery store. buy what you are going to use for the week and i would toss it because that can be exposed to bacteria. >> leftovers, i'm guessing this was from some sort of chinese food. >> my chinese food from last

night. >> toss the meat before the rice. >> listen, leftovers, we all have them after three to four days because they have already been cooked this are prone to bacteria, toss it. after three to four days though. doesn't have to be the next day. four day sass good mark. >> what about vegetables, lettuce and. >> lettuce is is a good one to talk about. people look at that expiration date and throws it out. if it looks good. >> if it's not slimy eat it. you don't want to waste that money and put it in cold water it will revitalize the leaves in a minute. so, if that's the issue if they look brown. >> how about dairy. >> dairy, milk, okay, use your senses, everyone, because that's really what matters. >> there is a date is not -- it just a date that's arbitrarily picked. a date on milk can last seven days after it could still be okay. smells good it's fine. >> what about eggs can you tell if you crack it. >> actually eggs are really interesting because the date on them they are good for three to five weeks after

the date on the eggs. >> three to five weeks. in a good test, if you put aning in water and it sinks it's still good. if it floats you can throw it out. if you are not sure, put it in a glass of water. >> refrigerator, how about what's in the pantry? >> pantry is also really interesting. obviously in the refrigerator it's cool. 40 degrees in the pantry it's warmer. things are drier. peanut butter after the expiration a date a year once with it's open, put it in the refrigerator keep it six to eight months still going to be good, it's dry, it's not moist. >> natural peanut butters you put in the refrigerator and even the regulars? >> if you want to to last long are it could still be good outside in the pantry more like three to six months. refrigerator six to eight months. >> even longer. >> another interesting thing. mustards can be good for -- it's very acidic good for a year after the expiration date. don't just toss it because you are wasting money. >> perfectly good pasta. stay perfectly good two years. >> two years?

diplomats. so, you know, high level, very sensitive information, this guy was in charge of. dealing with on a regular basis, this brian pagliano, former campaign advisor for the clintons. >> so hillary clinton has been very, pretty popular for the last decade or show. polls show her as one of the most admired women in the world. now that he would hearing from hillary clinton. details coming out how she conducted herself as secretary of state. poll numbers have moved in the wrong direction. at least from her perspective. she is now at 23 year low nationally. this is not among democratic voters. this is among all voters. some of whom she would need to win over to win the white house. she is at 31%. >> but democrats still sort of flat line strong. that's not changing. the support from among democrats. >> when you have no options. that may be what happened. >> bernie sanders doing really well and creeping up there in a lot of big polls. meanwhile donald trump this morning continues to sore. -- soar. poll numbers out.

gotten qualification for v.a. healthcare yet. they are waiting to get in the hospital system. this is just another example of how all encompassing the problems at the v.a. are are and how they are harming not just a few veterans here and there but hundreds of thousands of veterans across the country. >> what kind of care are they in need of? is this cancer treatment or is this a stomach ache or allergies? >> well, here's the scary thing. we don't know for sure. we don't know if this is veterans in need of very important critical care or vetee myself getting out of the military recently back from iraq or afghanistan. just looking for basic healthcare. we don't know because the v.a.'s records are so bad. that's why we needed immediate investigation and need to fall-on investigation which is going to be difficult to do but we still need to do it to determine how many of these veterans were seriously harmed or maybe unfortunately died as a result of these delayed and deleted records. >> yeah, and just a clogged system and the backlog is awful, but once they

actually get in the door, then how is the care? >> the quality of care once you get in the door depends on the hospital. but, that's the key issues. actually getting in the door and getting an appointment. once you qualify, it is still extremely difficult to get an appointment at the v.a. in a timely manner even with all the billions of dollars that we intent in addition to the money we had already. since the v.a. wait list scandal last year, weight times are still going up. there is still serious problems across the v.a. healthcare system. unfortunately not a whole lot has changed since the big scandal broke last year. >> gosh, we certainly hope that they will get moving quickly. dan caldwell, thank you so much for your time. >> thank you for having me on. >> unfortunate long time. 19 mention after the hour. traditional pillow fight at west point turns into bloody brawl. what started the mass chaos that left dozens injured and bloody? and is your baby really sleeping alone?

was very concerned that there is a lot of cryptic information out not only on the internet about this equipment but on the actual housing so someone buys the system and ultimately they don't realize that what they have is insecurity versus a sense of security. >> what are the dangers of someone hacking into your baby monitor. >> they can get remote control over your cameras and take that information and actually take a snapshot of your child and post it on the internet we have one case where the person who was hacking said daddy's coming, wake up little boy. and then when the person came into the room they said someone's coming, someone's in view. that's outrageous for someone to buy a baby monitor and be in that position. >> let's go through many solve the ways make sure that these baby monitors are safe because this is -- this is the way that we are now watching babies in their rooms using a smart phone, dying in with i-you know, just listening and hoping we hear them cry and we run up there. you say change the password from the default. >> change the password. mission critical. also important you don't use analogue base technology.

>> of course. >> i didn't believe people would do that. >> ease issue. make sure the ports you are tieing into are 8100 and higher. don't go lower into the port range. so you are in a situation where someone can access that or have unsecured cameras where they can self-authenticate and get online and access your system. >> do you encourage people to use cellular data for their monitors or not? >> yell you larr data is okay but you have got to have the encryption where someone spending time searching and fishing for this information cannot get their hands on it easily. >> and unplug the monitor when it's not in use, also. >> right, a lot of people turn the monitor off. because you can access it and accidently turn the monitor on, unplug the system so it cannot be accessed by these people. >> you brought two monitors in here. how do these get hacked in the first place? >> these technologies, a lot of them, this particular one has -- doesn't have the encryption that we want. so people can get on the wi-fi, sometimes their factory default pass codes that people don't know about, they are embedded in the technology. they can look online and

spying on students? it's happening. the orange county school district in florida is beginning a new program that monitors social media accounts of their students. but does the practice invade the privacy of the kids? or is it necessary? joining us for a debate is former teacher, and welcome to you both. deni denise, first to you. is this another example of mission creep. schools' mission are to teach kids. >> well, i actually don't think it's spying at all, to be honest. anything that goes out over social media is public. kids need to know that. if the cool is monitoring it, to me they're reading their social media, another way to make sure kids aren't being bullied or

feeling badly about themselves. it's all public, and every child needs to know that. >> whitney, is it the school's job to make sure that kids don't feel bad about themselves? >> there's a difference between schools making sure have the resources and software that's designed to take their personal information, locate their social media account, el olocate where they're providing information from, looking at the activity feeds, what they like and don't like, and flagging that on without information on who has access to this data. we've opened a pandora's box by using software like this, versus a well-meaning administrator or parent or teacher being able to see a couple public posts they have access to. >> we have to read the statement from the orange county school board about why they're doing this. quote -- because social immediate use can be the source of bullying, we believe it's appropriate to monday torp public sites where anybody can
