police officers as they were sitting in their patrol car at a red light. >> the shooter firing three shots, hitting one officer in the hand before running off. the other officer chased him until the man eventually surrendered. in the past two months, four las vegas officers have been shot around duty prompting officials to require two officers in each patrol car. >> fortunately that was the case. and we had two officers riding together. we were able to subdue this suspect. >> the motive, not yet known. >> today, thousands of fellow police officers, family and friends will say their final good-byes to lieutenant joseph gliniewicz, the 52-year-old father of four was gunned down last week on patrol in fox lake, illinois. this morning, his three murderers are on the run. police are looking at surveillance video from areas around the crime scene for clues. there is a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest.

a confession in the cold blooded murder of a texas dentist. a dental assistant, 23-year-old crystal cortez, telling police she was paid $500 to drive the killer to the dallas parking garage where dr. kendra hatcher was murdered. she was returning home to her apartment when she was robbed and shot dead, police say. cortez surrendered after police released pictures of her jeep cherokee at the garage. the killer is still on the loose. -- refused to issue same sex marriage licenses appealing the order that put her behind bar. supporters plan another rally tomorrow. kelly wright is here now with the latest in her fight for religious freedom. kelly? >> good morning to you. kim davis still believes she must stand on the principles of her faith. she's now filing an appeal of the judge's decision to put her in jail. the attorneys for davis issued a statement sunday night that states, while most americans are enjoying the extended holiday weekend with family and friends,

you are spending your labor day at the beach, you better be comfortable. >> there are beaches across several states. >> maria is here to show us how to survive. good morning, maria. >> that's right, strong rip currents can quickly turn a fun day at the beach into a deadly situation. i went to the beaches here in new york to learn what it takes to survive a current encounter. across america's beaches last year, almost 60 drownings occurred with swimmers getting caught up in rip currents. while it may seem look a scary statistic, it shouldn't stop you from having fun in the sun.

>> rip current, a swell of water in the shoreline to the ocean past the breaking waves and out past the breaking sea. >> there are waves you can spot a rip current with the naked eye. the beach from an elevated level. >> this white foam on the top of the ocean, water right here, leading out, is somewhat of a rip current. you can see the difference in the coloration of the water. >> just to give you a better visual, when scientists study the movement of the ocean, they often put a harmless dye into it to trace the currents. spotting a rip current is half the battle. if you get caught in one, pat is going to show you what to do. >> ready to get in the water? >> let's go. now, getting into the water was a little tough on this strong surf day. once we got out there, i learned the first tip. >> the most important tip is remain calm. do not panic in this situation. a rip current will not pull you

i think it will be a beach day for many across the nation. those temperatures are continuing to be on the rise. i want to share with you this video out of panama city. this is incredible. the water spout that formed off the shore and anytime you have storms over the water, just off the shore of the gulf coast or areas along the east coast, you can potentially see these develop and they're just a little bit of spin in the atmosphere. you see these develop. beautiful video. this is a water spout out of panama city beach. maybe you'll be seeing that across some areas along the gulf coast throughout the day today. storms develop. but the big story is how warm the temperatures are from the plains to the east coast. the temperatures already warm this weekend across the plains. the change is now in the northeast where temperatures are climbing there as well. expected to be into the 90s across places like new york city and boston. that should continue over the next few days before eventually a bit of a cooldown arrives. as we head to thursday, and otherwise besides beach weather, we're also looking at the threat for severe storms across places

like kansas into parts of wisconsin, large hail, damaging wind and flash flooding will be possible. heather and ainsley. >> thank you very much, maria. families visiting the indianapolis zoo for the holiday weekend forced to seek shelter after a cheetah escapes its enclosure. the big cat was found behind a barrier separating it from the public. it was quickly tranquilized and an hour long lockdown was lifted. zoo officials not sure how the cheetah escaped in the first place. the exhibit will be closed until they figure that out. a hammerhead shark took off a chunk of his foot, but a malibu man said there is no hard feelings. dillon is lucky to be alive after the hammerhead attacked him, biting his right foot. the 29-year-old was airlifted to the hospital and is now on the mend saying that he will not be casting a reel anytime soon. >> i'm not shark fishing anymore. i really respect them and really
