day very early with us. let's get right to that fox news alert. running for their lives, the terrifying moment a plane burst into flames. it was on a las vegas runway. our worst nightmare, right? panic passengers scrambling to get off the plane using the emergency slides. arthelle is here with what went wrong. >> it could have been disastrous. the british airways plane was just moments from taking off when the left engine suddenly burst into flames. witnesses recording video of the blaze, large clouds of smoke rising into the sky. 159 passengers and 13 crew members were on board the flight bound for london. seconds after the engine is gulfed in flames, the cabin fills with smoke. passengers escaped down

inflatable evacuation slides and running for their lives. >> started out just the flames. then it turned into this massive puff of big black smoke. >> everyone went over to one window, and all the sudden you just saw smoke pouring out of one of the left engines and flames. >> emergency crews arriving and dousing the flames with watt ere. the fire was quickly put out. 14 people were rushed to the hospital for minor injuries, most caused during evacuation, and some treated for smoke inhalation. >> all passengers were evacuated quickly and safely. they were taken by buses back to this terminal after which the airline transported them to area hotels. we cannot express enough gratitude for the response performed this afternoon by our emergency response team. >> two runways were shut down for nearly three hours, and the fire caused flight delays across the western u.s.

this morning everything is back to normal. officials say the engine experienced a technical issue, and today investigators with with the ntsb will arrive to investigate the exact cause. guys? >> arthel, thank you. i'm sorry. those words coming from hillary clinton for the first time as the e-mail scandal grows. >> good morning. this is a big deal. this is the first time hillary clinton has ever directly apologized for using a private e-mail server while secretary of state. >> in retrospect, certainly as i look back at it now, even though it was allowed, i should have used two accounts. one for personal, one for work related e-mails. that was a mistake. i'm sorry about that. i take responsibility. >> the apology didn't stop there. around 11:00 last night, clinton

posted another apology on facebook saying, quote, i know this is a complex story. i could have and should have done a better job answering questions earlier. she then posted a link to a new website that's entirely devoted to answering questions on this issue. well, in response, republican national committee released a statement saying, quote, the only thing hillary clinton regrets is that she got caught and is dropping in the polls, not the fact that her secret e-mail server left classified information exposed to the russians and the chinese. the latest polls show a troubling trend for her campaign. according to this new poll, her support has dropped ten points since august, and joe biden has even edged past bernie sanders into second place, and we don't even know if he's running. the big question now, will clinton's apology be enough to let her move past this e-mail issue. it's certainly a start, but remember, she still has to go before the benghazi committee in october. >> kristen fisher live for us in

washington, thank you. hillary clinton now losing steam among democrats as well. one washington insider says she has missed her chance. here's conservative columnist mark stein. >> in 2008 the democrats were told hillary is the heir presumptive. she loused it up. she defeated herself. this time around joe biden was told again, hillary is the air presumptive and he's loused it up again. the fact is neither he nor any other democrat should sit around watching this slow-motion train wreck. hillary, i think, would have a possible chance of surviving this if there was any good side to her campaign. but everything about her campaign is tone deaf. >> harsh words. well, more mud slinging between jeb bush and donald trump as the 2016 gop presidential candidates released new campaign ads.

vicky gardner released from a virginia hospital after undergoing two surgeries. she was being interviewed by wdbj reporter alison parker when a former employee opened fire and killed her and adam ward. kim davis waking up a free woman this morning in kentucky. ♪ rising up back on the streets ♪ >> well, hundreds cheering david on as she emerged after nearly a week behind bars for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. shannon breem has the latest. >> thank you all so much. i love you all so very much. >> hundreds who gathered to rally for the release of kim davis got to hear from the clerk herself. shortly after the same judge who ordered her to jail set her free, but not without conditions. federal judge david bunning warned davis if she should,

quote, interfere in any way directly or indirectly with the efforts of her deputy clerks to issue marriage licenses to all legally eligible couples, she could be violating the order and possibly facing a return to jail. her attorney refused to say whether or not she would interfere but vowed she will not resign. while davis has been in jail, five of her deputy clerks have been issuing licenses to all couples, altering them so rowan county appears on the line for the county clerk. bunning said the plaintiffs in the case are challenging the validity of the altered licenses and he considers them in compliance with the court as well. davis' legal teams disagree. >> whether her name is on it or not, it's under her authority. if we say the clerk of rowan county, we know that clerk is kim davis. she can not allow her name to be associated with something that conflicts with god's definition of marriage. >> 2016 gop presidential

contender mike huckabee quickly rushed to davis' side. >> we will stand with kim. we will stand with the constitution. and we will stand with our faith and will not be bullied no matter, even if they incarcerate us. >> fellow 2016 gop rival senator ted cruz was not part of the huckabee rally but also showed up to visit with davis today, calling it an outrage that she was, quote, imprisoned for six days for living according to her christian faith. >> there are several states that have or are working through the process of putting together accommodations. kentucky is not one of them. back to you. >> shannon, thank you. well, it was a sister showdown on the court. serena williams powering past her big sister in the u.s. open quarterfinals, continuing her bid to a grand slam. she beat her sister venus 6-2. the 33-year-old is now just two

victories away from becoming the fourth woman to win all four major singles titles in a season. next up, serena facing roberta vinci. we'll all be watching. >> what a great athlete. well, the heat continues, but some parts of the country could maybe be feeling a cooldown. >> that would be really nice. maria is tracking it. so hot here yesterday. >> today is going to be another hot one in the northeast, but as we head into tomorrow, it's going to feel a lot better. hang in there. we're going to see some storms with that cooldown coming up. today we're already going to see storms across parts of the interior northeast. up into parts of maine, you have a risk of storms today. some of them could produce large hail and damaging winds. we'll be watching that. then we have a second system, and it's going to be impacting parts of the plains. so across portions of nebraska, northwestern iowa, you have that concern out there. just a marginal risk. but nonetheless, watch out for

those storms that could proous isolated severe weather. then we'll be watching tomorrow across kansas, southeastern nebraska, and across parts of iowa and also northwestern missouri. here's a look at the temperature story. we've been talking about how hot it is. you can see in the northeast, new york city and boston, you should reach 90 yet again. factor in that humidity, and it's going to feel hotter than that. as we head into tomorrow, that cooler air starts to move in behind our storm system. high temperature at just 80 in new york. 78 degrees in the city of boston. meanwhile across parts of the southern plains, you're going to stay hot out there. temperatures should be in the 90s still for places like dallas and amarillo. >> all right. thank you. we'll check back with you. it is ten minutes after the top of the hour. two players and now a coach benched because of this hit on a referee. brand new information this morning about who was behind the whole thing. and a holy frenzy. free tickets to see the pope go up in just minutes. now they're being sold for big bucks online. is that fair?

a high school team accused of blind siding a referee now say the official was using racial slurs to talk to the students, and an assistant coach is now accused of the attack. kdsw reporter has the story from texas. >> reporter: this is the video that's been viewed more than 5 million times since saturday. two high school players blindside an official. >> the incident is shameful to us. >> reporter: players say racial

slurs were directed at them by the umpires. >> there's questions on that, obviously, but we trust them to do a great job for us. >> reporter: the players frustrated by what they felt were bad or missed calls all games. >> was the umpire involved in the controversial call? >> you know, i can't speak to that completely, but my understanding of it is yes. >> reporter: and the assistant coach allegedly said to players on the sidelines, that guy, referring to the umpire, needs to pay for cheating us. he's been placed on administrative leave. >> that's not something that you tell young men out on the gridiron and their adrenaline is flowing. >> reporter: state senator royce west carried the legislation that made it illegal for parents to attack the referees. he says the students need to be held responsible. >> what we shouldn't do is suspend them for the rest of the year for or the rest of their

all he could to sweep it under the rug. that's why according to the report, other team owners asked him to go hard on tom brady over deflategate as if it was a makeup call. goodell denies those claims. the state department just passed a hillary clinton donor as their new transparency coordinator. back in june, former ambassador janice jacobs donated the maximum $2700 to clinton's campaign. now she will handle the backlog of requests from the press and lawmakers wanting to grill the presidential candidate on her private e-mail server. the state department says that they chose jacobs for her, quote, experience running large organizations and leading change efforts. >> she's a donor. doesn't make sense. all right. a fox business alert this morning. major hype today for apple's big event. fans are already camped out in front of a lot of the stores. >> and we have a preview.

and welcome back to "fox & friends first." chilling 911 calls reveal the terrifying moment that a mother realizes her two sons are trying to kill her. >> please send someone to my house. my children are trying to kill me. they've attacked me and my husband. they drugged us with xanax. i just heard them say, where did mom go. they're headed upstairs now. [ screaming ] >> well, the kids are accused of stabbing their father and badly beating their mother before trying to set their house on fire. police now trying to figure out why the brothers turned on their parents. their mother suggesting insurance money. she's out of the hospital. her husband, though, is still being treated for his injury.

an illegal immigrant and convicted burglar is back in the u.s. after being deported five times. he was just arrested by federal agents at a jail near the texas-mexico border, charged with illegally re-entering the country. martinez arrived in texas last month. he was last reported in november after serving a 42-month prison sentence for entering the country illegally with a prior felony conviction. a barbershop is fined $750 for refusing to cut a woman's hair. the shop near pittsburgh punished for gender discrimination after the owner told the female customer that he only cuts men's hair. he says he made suggestions for other salons in that area, but he didn't realize that he was required to serve women too. the owner says his male customers come in looking to hang out with other guys, and he doesn't expect a big increase in female customers.

an unholy act for a holy event. tickets for pope francis' speech in philadelphia are already selling for hundreds of dollars on craigslist. fox 29 reporter steve keely is live. city officials aren't happy with this. >> reporter: yeah, some in the city of brotherly love are showing their love of their brothers' money. most winners were elated to stand near the post in independence hall, but some winners, as we predicted this time yesterday, acted like they won the lottery and won the right to cash in, selling free tickets in the free markets of ebay and craigslist. one user selling two tickets with train passes for $1500, with some catholics will argue borders on violating the commandment, thou shall not steal, and philly's mayor called it plain ignorant.

she could face consequences. her lawyer says she will be back to work this week. >> well, governor mike huckabee wasn't the only one speaking out on kim davis. several other gop candidates sounding off with some different points of view. listen. >> congress now has a responsibility to step up to the plate and enact legislation that will protect the first amendment right of all americans. >> i'm a very, very strong believer in christianity and religion, but i will say that this was not the right job for her because we had a ruling from the supreme court, and we are a country of laws. >> this is a very serious religious matter. it's the equivalent of saying to a doctor, you have to perform an abortion. there's roe versus wade. people have the right under that decision to have an abortion, but we don't force doctors to perform abortions. here we're in a situation because this is a governmental function, we're going to be

forcing people to violate their very deeply held religious beliefs. australia is taking the fight to isis in syria. it will launch air strikes against multiple targets within days, adding to the bombing runs that it has been conducting there in iraq since last year. australia's also planning to take in 12,000 refugees as the crisis worsens there in europe. that is in in addition to its annual intake of more than 13,000. well, talk about a tight squeeze. look at this. an illegal immigrant caught trying to cross the border hiding inside this vehicle. a u.s. citizen was driving the car with a 3-year-old child inside the car. she appeared a bit nervous, so they did a search. the mexican citizen was found underneath the backseat where there was a hidden compartment. the driver now facing federal charges. cooler temperatures in parts of the country. plus, some severe weather. >> maria is live in the weather

center with more plus our travel forecast. >> hey, good morning. today we're going to be tracking several areas of thunderstorms. one of them across parts of the northeast, including northeastern pennsylvania up into parts of maine. you're looking at the risk for some of these storms to produce large hail and damaging winds. as you head farther west across parts of the plains, we'll have another storm system rolling through. out there it could produce severe weather not only today but even as we head into tomorrow. so several areas there to track for possible severe storms. now, the big story in the northeast has been how hot it has been. you can see that temperatures for today are forecast to be hot yet again. 90s. by tomorrow, a lot cooler out there across the region. >> all right. thank you, maria. well, it is one of the most coveted spots, the super bowl halftime stage. and this morning word is there may be an encore performance.
