tv   The Five  FOX News  September 10, 2015 2:00pm-3:01pm PDT

2:00 pm
i'm dana perino, along with kimberly guilfoyle, eric bolling, juan williams and greg gutfeld. this is "the five". >> trump had no problem launching a very personal strike on another outsider opponent, carly fiorina. here's what he told "rolling stone" about her appearance. "look at that face. would anyone vote for that? i mean, she's a woman. i'm not supposed to say bad things but really folks come on are we serious? fiorina gave this response on "the kelly file" last night. >> i think those comments speak
2:01 pm
for themselves. and all the many, many, many thousands of voters out there that are helping me climb in the polls. yes, they're very serious. >> what do you take that to mean?" look at that face. would anyone vote for that". >> i have no idea. you know, honestly, meghan, i'm not going to spend a single cycle wondering what donald trump means. but maybe just maybe i'm getting under his skin a little bit because i am climbing in the polls. >> trump attempted to walk back the insult this morning. >> probably i did say something like that about carly. i'm talking about persona. i'm not talk about look, although i get criticized for my hair which isn't that bad. you know you've seen me. but when i get criticized constantly by my hair, nobody does a story isn't that terrible they criticize donald trump's hair. the fact is that i probably did that about carly or something about in jocular manner obviously. >> about her persona. but persona is not a look it's
2:02 pm
your image. anyone buying the excuse? >> no. >> that's a no. i actually thought that carly fiorina handled it very well. >> why not? >> she focused on the fact that she's a winner. >> yes, of course. by the way, she's a tough lady. she's not sitting there crying in the corner saying woe is me. she wants to be president of the united states, okay? so she can handle this. people are talk about her. she has trumps attention. to me i just go, okay. this is another day in a campaign in politics. maybe it's not like the nicest thing to say even in a jocular manner, referring to someone's persona. but i like how she handled it. it's fine. all good. >> this is something i was wondering about today. so donald trump dominates in the media everywhere that you turn. he doesn't need to do an interview with "rolling stone" "rolling stone" magazine doesn't really deserve to get the leading republican candidate as an interview. >> i have to say, the biggest surprise for me there was actual journalism in "rolling stone."
2:03 pm
this was actual reporting. i was shocked. the thing is, if a crude insult about a woman's face is uttered by donald trump among donald trump supporters, does it actually make a sound? and we know that it doesn't. it's because we have learned that none of these things matter. this is actually a blessing for donald trump and a curse. it's a blessing because people have realized that whatever he has created, he's been able to galvanize a force that is saying, basically screw you to the status quo. that is now blows everything away. the insults don't matter. nothing matters. the problem is, he doesn't have any critical guardrails. he's got to have somebody around him, maybe it's his wife, i don't know. but there's got to be something around him a critical guardrail that says to him, you know what, you've already got your hard core base. if you want to win other people, we need an expectation of better behavior than you're operating with now. it's funny, it's funny. but it may not last. >> but i don't think he's
2:04 pm
surrounded by people like that. because in the article it says, eric, that the staff all laughed uproariously when he said it. then today he's put in a position of having to try to walk it back and gets them off track for a day. so maybe he is the undisputed frontrunner. a poll now cnn 2016 gop nomination, donald trump clocking in at 32%. this is with registered voters. so he's got something here. do you think he needs to maybe add somebody who would say, oy, knock it off? >> so i see the 32%. i see carson at 19%, 51% basically say almost doesn't matter what they're physically saying because donald trump can be the polar opposite of ben carson. they can say the exact opposite on many things. and still they're going to garner 51% of the gop vote basically the voters on the right are saying i don't really ca what they aren't. what they aren't are typical d.c. politicians.
2:05 pm
what donald trump does by making these statements, i don't think they're slips. i think he plans these statements out so that he stays relevant in the media. look at. he is dominating media coverage on every single network for the carly comment, the face comment. and then if you don't like that, you can also take well, there's also a feud going on with dr. ben carson which everyone thought wasn't going to happen. ben carson fell into that. donald trump was asked the other day, carson's moving up on your lead. do you want to fight with him? he on air said, no, i'll wait. if he wants to fight i'll fight back. i'm a great counter puncher. carson, i love him. but why? don't fight him. so he does. and then he gets the feud. what ends up happening, it takes the carly face comment and puts kind of, yeah, okay, lead a lot of people are leading with the ben carson versus donald trump. >> you know what's missed out on this is the actual better and more beneficial story to donald trump was the cnn open letter,
2:06 pm
saying you're making a lot of money off this debate. it should go to charity. that got bumped by the carly stuff. and i don't know if you can plan a "rolling stone" story. sounded like an off hand comment on the plane. >> sounded like he was comfortable on the plane with the reporter. >> what strikes me first of all, carly fiorina should not be worried about this. gosh -- >> she's not. >> i don't know how many people would tell carly fiorina, i'll tell her, i would prefer hanging around with you than the barbie dolls they see with donald trump. you've got more life and intelligence than i guess anybody -- >> who are you referring to? >> well, i guess some of the women he's been married to. >> i don't think that's a very nice thing to say at all. i actually know them personally do you? >> i think carly fiorina has spunk, intelligence. >> you're getting madder at him than trump. >> that's fine. she can do that. i'm just saying, going after a woman like that, i don't think anybody should do that.
2:07 pm
>> i don't think it's appropriate for him to do that or you to do it. >> i'm just saying -- donald trump apparently likes barbie dolls, not women that look like carly fiorina. but i want to say this about the polls. i find it so interesting that trump is now gaining among people with college degrees, he's now gaining with people who are tea party supporters, he is the big news out of this poll to me is here we are now, the weather's turning. and donald trump remaining at top of the republican ticket. so to me what's incredible is 51% of republicans say they see him as the eventual winner. and jeb bush, jeb bush just keeps receding. nothing in the poll indicates there's traction for him. >> let's take a look at the two front runners and little feud eric mentioned. donald trump and dr. ben carson. >> i realize where my success has come from. and i don't in any way deny my faith in god.
2:08 pm
that's a very big part of who i am. humility and the fear of the lord. i don't get that impression with him. maybe i'm wrong. >> who is he to question my faith? when i am -- you know, he doesn't even know me. he was a doctor, perhaps an okay doctor by the way. you can check that out, too. we did not talk about a great -- he was an okay doctor. because he's a doctor and he hired one nurse he's going to end up being the president of the united states? >> i don't think that works, greg. he's an okay doctor? he was the first to separate conjoined twins. >> 22 years ago. >> as amy levy said he's a very divisive person, ben carson. this is why trump, you know that's a joke when he's saying he's not a very -- i laugh when i hear that. trump to me is the howard stern candidate. remember how howard stern would talk about "the five" he would say he loved "the five" because it was fun, real and exciting. not because he agreed with us. i don't think he cared about
2:09 pm
anything we said. he just enjoyed it. doesn't that sound like trump? that people enjoy trump not because of any of the beliefs. sooner or later that will matter. i mean, i think he attracts people over the immigration issue. but certainly conservatives can't be pleased over raising taxes. right? >> in that poll i think it was 75% talking about the outsiders that lead on the republican side. talking about carson, fiorina and trump. they said 75% of republicans said we back them because we agree with their views. i was like how could that -- >> i mean, people back people, candidates, because they like them. they have a likability. >> i agree with greg. but their views? >> think about this, juan. 51% of the vote nurrs in that c poll picked donald trump or ben carson. two guys who couldn't be more opposite -- ben carson was
2:10 pm
crying on air yesterday, and it was so touching, so moving. he was talking about his small donors an didn't want to disappoint the small people or the low income people who could only afford 25 bucks. he did not want to waste their $25. he is so filled with heart. donald trump is not that guy. he goes after you in your face. >> he said he's a counter puncher. >> but the two of them are dominating the polls because the right is sick of d.c. politics. it doesn't matter what they say. people like those two for other reasons. >> they're both at the top, eric. you know why carson said what he said? because the evangelical vote is so critical. and i think trump made a big mistake when he said, you know, he's never asked for forgiveness from the lord. but it apparently didn't have all that terrible an impact among evangelical voters. carson reminds them -- trump comes back and says who's he to question my faith? i'd say to mr. trump who are you to question president obama's place of birth? >> bobby jindal going after trump full throated. >> how do you get news coverage?
2:11 pm
>> you do it at the debate. >> by talking about trump. >> you do it when you have the stage. >> i think today was probably the right time to do it to get yourself out there a little bit and be remembered before the debate next week. >> why not? i mean, look, he's a newsmaker. whether you like it or not, agree with what he says or his tactics, people are covering him, not just this place, all the networks are covering what he has to say. and the ideas. and yes, he says things that are divisive and that are -- yes, they catch people's attention. they offend. some people are inspired by what he says because they're tired of politics as usual. it all depends. let's see how it shakes out. this is a free country. everybody's entitled to get in. god knows everyone has on the republican side. let's see about the next debate and what happens there. carly fiorina, she's holding her own. >> i think for the next -- >> she looks quite nice and quite beautiful. i think you can be an attractive woman and smart, too, juan. >> oh, yeah. i don't doubt that. by the way, you know what the big good news is for republicans from my outsider perspective?
2:12 pm
there's tremendous enthusiasm on the republican side generated in part, i suspect, by donald trump, carson, fiorina. >> obama. >> you guys have been hating on obama forever. >> that's not a fair thing to say to me. >> oh, no? okay. >> hating on obama? no. come on. >> you guys have -- >> we're just going to beat up on you -- >> antagonism towards obama for a long time. >> the reason why trump is doing -- is entd enter takd entg is us. we do this for a living but we have no responsibility tied to what we say. i've been doing this at fox for five years. i've insulted, been obnoxious, arrogant. i don't have any responsibility. now you're actually seeing this kind of sensibility in the political realm as a candidate. that could be a first history where a guy actually goes out and says the things that we've said on this show many times. build a wall. but we know we're not going to
2:13 pm
build it. we said this stuff all the time. now you have essentially a roving insult comic running forpresident who's really kind of good at >> it i talked about the staff laughing and not realizing they should correct it. but actually i come from the old school, right? where actually things that you said actually mattered. so maybe i wouldn't be a good adviser. good thing i'm on the show. trump's going "on the record tonight" with greta van suste n susteren. ahead the eight that maintain hillary clinton's private e-mail server invoked his fifth amendment right to keep silent on capitol hill today. details next on "the five." the promise of the cloud is that every organization

we can help keep people safe; and to us that feels really good. so you're a small business expert from at&t? yeah, give me a problem and i've got the solution. well, we have 30 years of customer records. our cloud can keep them safe and accessible anywhere. my drivers don't have time to fill out forms. tablets. keep it all digital. we're looking to double our deliveries. our fleet apps will find the fastest route. oh, and your boysenberry apple scones smell about done. ahh, you're good.
2:16 pm
i like to bake. add new business services with at&t and get up to $500 in total savings.
2:17 pm
the man who helped set up hillary clinton's secret e-mail server appeared on capitol hill today. but brian pagliano pleaded the fifth. here's trey gowdy. >> we had roughly 19 pages worth of questions. he has a right to invoke his privilege against incrimination. it is a personal right. he did assert, which is his right, to do so. and that's where we are. >> elijah cummings, the ranking
2:18 pm
democrat on the committee, is accusing republicans of trying to derail clinton's presidential bid. >> he was bragging here today, and the reason being again, politics. we knew what he was going to say. he said it last week. and nothing has changed. >> meanwhile, as clinton's server scandal grows, her poll numbers are shrinking. for the first time, hillary clinton trails bernie sanders in iowa. he leads her 41-40. dana, want to talk about the pagliano pleading the fifth? >> i do. one of the accusations from the democrats was that pagliano was being intimidated by the republicans on the committee, which i think is just curious. i think kimberly, tell me if i'm wrong on this. first of all, he did set up the server. one of the questions is, making sure that we understand how it was set up. did you do so with accuracy? how did you make sure it was secure from outside influence? so there's a chain of custody.
2:19 pm
and he would have been the person -- as the person who set it up, he is the person that had the ultimate chain of custody in setting that up. so that's one. the second thing is, in the manner in which he was asked to come to the committee today, it was not public. you don't have a photograph of pagliano raising his hand and having to plead the fifth. what they did to bush administration officials when elijah cummings was the chair and brought them up there and paraded them around. that did not happen to this individual. some people that are on the committee today actually compelled others in a different way in the bush administration. so their hypocrisy is showing. >> right-left issue or really need some answers? >> it used to be but not anymore. look. the "new york times," right? you have media matters going absolutely apoplectic at "new york times" over this. we know that it's not an ideological battle. in this era of electronic data, you cannot have somebody of this witless incompetency that hillary clinton has expressed in
2:20 pm
dealing with technological things. she cannot be in charge. that's like putting her husband in charge of a girl's college. it's a bad idea. she has lost her entitlement, smug entitlement for this offers. she should walk off into the sunset. >> k.g., pagliano can't be off the hook this easy, though. he can plead the fifth. but can't the fbi dig deep into what he did, where he was, his e-mails? >> absolutely. but do you understand how bad this looks? if you have nothing to hide and you're the one touting transparency and i'm so sorry i didn't mean to do anything and you didn't in fact do anything, why can't you have someone who is an integral part of this that set up this server talk about like dana said the chain of custody on it to show exactly what was done and how it was done and give us some assurance that in fact it was secure? what means by did you install it? did you set it up? did you make sure thought wat i going to be safe and secure. what? already? this is the tip of the iceberg and already taking the fifth on that. >> juan, you take the fifth so
2:21 pm
that you don't testify against yourself you might release some evidence that would be incriminating to yourself. what's he hiding? what's he worried about? >> i don't know. it will be curious to me. from what i understand from his lawyer, the lawyer as dana said said that the committee the republicans were trying to intimidate him because basically he had said a week ago i'm not going to testify. i invoke my fifth amendment rights. to me, by the way, dana, i think these pictures, this guy walking in, i think everybody in america is going to see them. >> we can go back and look at other ones that this committee was horrible to people. >> you have scars. i understand. i'm just saying i think if this was a political perp walk as far as i'm concerned. >> you can't invoke the fifth and not be in person. you can't do it through your lawyer through a press statement, through elijah cummings. it's your personal responsibility. you have to show up. >> you can write a letter. all right. the second thing to say here is that with regard to hillary clinton's numbers, i think it hurts her again. it just stirs this issue again
2:22 pm
with the voters. and i think that's to my mind the ongoing issue in terms of her dropping numbers. republicans can't stand her. but now what you get is bernie sanders saying you know what, he doesn't even think it's the issue. he thinks the issue is that he's the one who's speaking to middle class issue, worried about college and all the rest. >> we have to get to this. so the state department hired a new transparency czar to handle records requests. clinton's e-mails in particular. janice jacobs happens to be a big supporter of hillary's. she made a $2700 donation to hillary's campaign. the department is deflecting criticism. >> this is the united states of america. it's a democracy. people are allowed to do this kind of thing. and to suggest that just by dint of making a contribution to whatever political cause or campaign thought disqualifies somebody from a job, i think that's a very bad place for us to be. if we're going to start criticizing people for campaign
2:23 pm
contributions that they make in their private time. in retirement no less. >> k.g., that is the whole -- disclose these things. they want disclosure. especially for someone who's quote the transparency czar hiding something. >> i mean, this is the thing. it's one thing after the next. is any of it going to stick? does anybody care? juan cares about the clinton global initiative saying influence pedalling. do you care about the other stuff? does it bother you people taking the fifth? does it bother you she's hiding evidence? does it bother you people that work for her won't answer questions? instead people say the republicans are badgering her group? it's insulting that they actually want answers to questions? >> you know, mrs. clinton actually encouraged them all to testify. >> oh, right. please. >> you don't believe that, kimberly? >> oh, my god. of course. so she can say that. you're going to take the fifth. i really wish juan would start telling the truth. >> kimberly, she's going to testify. >> it's like stop being so naive. kirby says that political
2:24 pm
donation to hillary who now this transparency czar is supposed to be investigating hillary's e-mails. don't worry about that. >> i feel bad for kirby. i used to like him. now he reminds me of michael scott from "the office." so hapless. the jacket's not fitting right. i feel bad for him. do you know what's crumbling in all this? the one weapon that hillary had. she was supposed -- the historical nature of this candidacy. we are not talking about it. she's supposed to be the first woman. america wants more than another x chromosome. we realize that. it's not going to wint the election. that's got to kill her. it wasn't supposed to be hard. it was supposed to be easy. >> what do you think about bernie sanders rising? >> it's like a left winger telling you he rides a unicycle made of hemp. >> i didn't get that. >> it's something to brag about your left wing bona fides. >> they don't know who else to vote for. if they had one other choice they would probably go to the other choice. >> you don't think it's true. >> "new york times" article
2:25 pm
about the white knight coming in to save the party. >> you don't think it's true sanders is climbing because people are tying into -- >> they can't with good conscience support hillary clinton with all the scandal going on. >> on the state department, the appearance of a conflict of interest is actually their responsibility. clearly there is an appearance of a conflict of interest. and the administration is never willing to just take a knee on something. say okay you're right. what were we thinking? we'll get somebody else in there. nobody would talk about the e-mail czar today if they did the right thing. on bernie sanders, he has yet to actually attack hillary clinton on her most vulnerable point, which is honesty, trustworthiness. the word most associated with her in the quinnipiac poll is liar. bernie sanders hasn't said that at all. he is already beating her in iowa without even trying to attack her. that's amazing. >> we need to go. i don't even know. is bernie sanders even allowed on the democrat stage for a democrat debate if he's a socialist and not a democrat? >> the fact that the democrats are having this disbeaut about
2:26 pm
how many debat-- dispute about many debates. >> do you know the first person to take the fifth? beethoven. >> good. coming up, is the obama administration altering u.s. intelligence assessments on isis to fit with its public narrative on the terror network? a very concerning report coming up.

are americans being told the truth about isis by the obama administration? well, according to a new "daily beast" report, more than 50 intelligence analysts working for centcom say amessments on the terror network have been inappropriately altered by senior officials. the defense department says it's investigating. here's more from the pentagon today. >> but the secretary has addressed this previously. and i think he's made clear he expects candid intelligence analysis to come his direction for folks to call it like they
2:31 pm
see it. >> does the secretary think that this intelligence was changed that the people behind that should be punished? >> i think we're going to wait to see where the i.g.'s investigation goes. i don't want to prejudge the outcome. >> former cia acting director mike morrell commented on the claims earlier. >> one of the key aspects of the policy making process in the united states is that analysts get to say what they think without any interference, without anybody changing it. so this is a very, very serious charge. i think it needs to be fully investigated. and if there is truth that somebody has been meddling with their analysis, i think somebody needs to lose their job over it. >> there should be outrage other this. this should be a top story leading every show tonight. but dana, we don't see that much coverage or talk about it. why? >> because of trump. we led with trump. >> sorry. go ahead. >> but this story could have
2:32 pm
legs, she's right. the thing in "the daily beast" article, this notion of a d.o.d. inspector general report came out a couple of weeks ago. we didn't know who had suggested it. sometimes you think might just be one agent. but "the daily beast" reports there's actually 50 agents who are telling them there's a problem. one of the things i think that's interesting on the press coverage thing is that after the 2003 invasion of iraq, reporters that were interviewed about that time frame said we just should have asked more questions. we should have asked more questions. well, are they going to ask more questions of this? we'll see. >> i mean this should be significant, eric. it's not one or two, it's not some kind of outlier story. you have 50 saying listen this is being inappropriately altered. meaning erasing some truth, modifying it, shape shifting it so it makes the administration look good that they're actually making gains in the fight against isis and al qaeda. >> maybe i can ask dana this. are they doing this for the public consumption or is this the information going to the
2:33 pm
defense department for the generals to make their decisions on? if they're giving the generals all the intel coming in disseminating to the people who need to be on the inside properly and just saying to us, i mean, it stinks for us, i.e. isis is the j.v. team when inside they really know they're problems. as long as they're taking care of business on the inside. i don't know if this is for their consumption or ours. >> you mean the intel report? >> yes. >> all this intel would be funneled up and then sent to the administration for their consumption so they could make decisions. >> so on the way up to obama's decisions making, ultimately obama's decision it's being fudged on way up. that is disturbing. >> it does appear to be the allegation that is in "the daily beast" i don't know what the inspector general report will show. i think most intelligence analyst gos go to work every da call it like they see it and hope that information is unaltered when it gets to the decisionmakers. >> that just affects everything. the outcome, the world, history,
2:34 pm
it affects our safety and our national security. does anybody care? >> oh, yeah. but you know, part of this is that people in the intelligence community, one, make mistakes. and they have oftentimes, one perspective or another. i mean, think back to what happened with weapons of mass destruction. so sometimes errors are made and then there's criticism of our intelligence gatherers, our analysts. and then you come forward and people start asking questions about like for instance in libya where we had intelligence gathering that perspective at this table was totally wrong as to the cause of why those guys went after our ambassador and the like. remember that? >> there's like six things to correct in what you said. and we're very heavy on time. >> that's what i'm saying. the analysts were wrong. that's what i'm saying to you. >> they lied. >> i don't think analysts lied. sometimes the politicians lie. >> they were forced to blame it
2:35 pm
on the video. >> right now in the cia we try to correct how we gather intelligence. once you get into a political process it's dangerous if you're changing something for a political purpose. >> right. >> i'm not sure it's always for a political purpose. it could be that somebody is saying you guys don't have the whole picture. >> 50? >> 50? >> 50 mistakes. >> if there's a rogue agent who's biassed in a report. but when you have 50 that say the reports are being changed and altered -- >> not saying somebody's wrong. saying that they are being inappropriately altered. that is not like my bad. i didn't have a double frappuccino with extra shot of caffeine. they're saying here's the report, here's the facts. here's the information. you don't need that. here you go. take that up. >> this works much better than i thought. >> they also said there are weapons of mass destruction. >> i have a theory here. that if you come from an experience where you believe that america is at the root of
2:36 pm
all the world's problems, then you force people to underestimate the threats that you're supposed to fight. rather than upset captain precious, we play down the threats around the world. therefore, america because part of this malignant ideology that we're the cause of all these ills, we do not have to act. because there aren't these threats out there. so we play down the threats. in the long term what you have is hell spreading across the middle east. right now, all of our trained rebels in syria are dead or missing. this is amazing. because i would say of the united states, how the mighty have fallen. but we didn't fall. we were pushed. >> yeah. and captain precious -- >> every official inquiry in the 2003 wmd piece proved that there was no credence for the bush lied people died mantra that became a political vendetta against the president. >> there you go. >> i just want to be on the record. next. what happens when millennials --

buzz feed, the web site devoted to lists about which bean you look like decided to address the sensitive issues of policing with a video called "men try on a police uniform" where thoughtful beta bros dress up as cops then comment on their feelings. it will make your brain puke. >> honestly, i see jerk before i see here row. and that sucks. >> the fashion sensibility of being a police officer seems like it would be sort of a weird burden to deal with. how do you carry yourself like a cop? what does a cop stand like? >> we could look at this police officer and feel safer, but i look at myself now, it makes me
